Haplochromis oligacanthus is a small, little-known haplochromine cichlid of the Ubangi River and the wider middle Congo basin, long carried under the name Ctenochromis oligacanthus before a 2022 revision returned it to the catch-all genus Haplochromis. Described by Charles Tate Regan in 1922 from a single specimen taken at Bangui, it is one of those Central African fishes known almost entirely from museum material: a few-spined, maternally mouthbrooding cichlid whose colours, behaviour and ecology in the river remain essentially undocumented. Its scientific interest lies less in the aquarium than in the tangle of taxonomy it sits inside — a species that has been shuffled between three genera while never being properly re-studied.

Taxonomy & naming

The species was described by the British ichthyologist Charles Tate Regan in 1922 as Haplochromis oligacanthus, in the second part of his classification of the family Cichlidae (Annals and Magazine of Natural History, series 9, volume 10, page 258). The description rested on a single fish — the holotype, and to this day the only specimen unambiguously attributed to the species — collected on the Ubangi (Oubangui) River at Bangui in what is now the Central African Republic, and held in the Natural History Museum, London under register BMNH 1920.7.12.48. The epithet records the feature Regan used to separate it from its relatives: comparatively few dorsal-fin spines. For most of the twentieth century the fish drifted within Regan's enormous, deliberately loose genus Haplochromis, a 'catch-all' that at its height held hundreds of African riverine and lacustrine haplochromines. In 1979 Peter Humphry Greenwood revised the genus Ctenochromis and, on the basis of shared chest-scale characters — a sharp break in scale size between the pectoral and pelvic fins and naked patches on the chest — moved five species into it, oligacanthus among them, alongside Ctenochromis pectoralis, Ctenochromis horei, Ctenochromis luluae and Ctenochromis polli. That placement was never widely accepted; Daget and colleagues (1991) and later Fricke and colleagues (2021) continued to list the fish as Haplochromis oligacanthus, and some authors hedged it as '"Haplochromis" oligacanthus' to flag its uncertain home. The matter was settled by Genner and co-authors in their 2022 revision of Ctenochromis (European Journal of Taxonomy 819), which restricted true Ctenochromis to two East African coastal-river species (Ctenochromis pectoralis and the newly described Ctenochromis scatebra), erected the genus Shuja for the Tanganyikan Ctenochromis horei, and formally returned oligacanthus, luluae and polli to Haplochromis pending a comprehensive study. Molecular data place Haplochromis oligacanthus as sister to Haplochromis polli within a larger clade of southern and central African haplochromines that includes the serranochromines — a lineage quite distinct from the East African fishes that now define Ctenochromis. The authors were explicit that these three Congolese species still 'require a comprehensive taxonomic evaluation,' so the name should be read as a placeholder rather than a settled conclusion.

Morphology

This is a small cichlid. The only published size figure traces back to the type material and to FishBase, which gives a maximum of about 2.5 in total length — a fish that would sit comfortably in the palm of a hand. No detailed colour description from living or freshly caught specimens has been published, and there is no widely circulated photograph of an identified individual; what is known of its form comes from Regan's original account and from Greenwood's later comparative work. In general build it is a typical riverine haplochromine: a moderately deep, laterally compressed body, a single continuous dorsal fin, and the bicuspid and tricuspid jaw teeth characteristic of the group. The name oligacanthus — 'few-spined' — points to its diagnostic trait, a reduced count of dorsal-fin spines relative to the geographically nearby Haplochromis stigmatogenys, which Regan used as his comparison. Greenwood placed weight on its chest squamation, in particular the abrupt change in scale size across the breast and the scaleless areas there, which is what drew the species into Ctenochromis in the first place. The condition of the male egg-spots — whether they are ocellate (ringed) or non-ocellate, a character that matters a great deal in haplochromine classification — has never been established for this species; Genner and colleagues noted they were 'unaware of any unambiguous evidence' on the point. Sexual dimorphism has not been documented, but by strong analogy with virtually all river haplochromines, breeding males are expected to be the more colourful sex and to carry anal-fin egg-spots, while females stay plainer; this should be treated as an inference, not a recorded fact.

Habitat

Haplochromis oligacanthus is a freshwater fish of the middle Congo (Zaire) basin. The type and best-known locality is the Ubangi River at Bangui, the Central African Republic's capital, where the river forms the border between the CAR and the Democratic Republic of the Congo; FishBase and the IUCN extend its recorded range across the Ubangi and the middle Congo basin in both countries. In the scheme of Freshwater Ecoregions of the World this places it squarely in the Sudanic Congo – Oubangui ecoregion, a transitional drainage on the northern rim of the Congo basin that shares several Nilo-Sudanic fish lineages with the Chad and Nile systems through ancient river capture. The Ubangi here is a large, warm, lowland tropical river with a pronounced flood pulse, a soft and only weakly mineralised blackwater-to-clearwater chemistry typical of the Congo interior, and seasonally turbid, tannin-stained reaches over sand, mud and submerged wood. No in-situ water chemistry has been published specifically for this species; the values used here for husbandry purposes are the soft, warm, mildly acidic-to-neutral conditions general to the middle Congo (roughly pH 6.0–7.8 and 75–82 °F). Its depth distribution is likewise undocumented, but as a small benthopelagic riverine haplochromine it is expected to inhabit the shallow, structured margins — vegetated banks, leaf litter and woody debris in the upper few metres of the water column — rather than the deep main channel.

Feeding

There is no published study of the diet of this species — no gut-content analysis and no field feeding observations exist for it. What can be said is general and inferential. FishBase estimates a trophic level of about 3.2, which would place it among the small carnivores and omnivores rather than the algae-scrapers or detritivores. Riverine haplochromines of this size are, as a rule, opportunistic micro-predators that work the bottom and the structured margins for aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans, worms and other invertebrates, taking the occasional plant fragment, seed or scrap of detritus. The dentition Regan and Greenwood describe — small bicuspid and tricuspid teeth in the jaws — is consistent with this generalist invertebrate-leaning habit rather than with any specialised feeding mode. In the Ubangi's rich and crowded fish community it would be one of many small insectivorous cichlids partitioning the shallow-water invertebrate resource; its precise role is simply not on record.

Mating

Nothing has been observed or published about courtship, pairing or territoriality in Haplochromis oligacanthus. Because the species is a haplochromine and a maternal mouthbrooder, its mating system can be predicted with reasonable confidence from the overwhelming pattern across the group, but it has not been documented for this fish specifically. In river haplochromines, mouthbrooding is paired with a polygynous, largely promiscuous mating system: males do not form lasting pair bonds but instead court many passing females, often from a small temporary territory or display site. Males advertise with intensified colour and with the anal-fin egg-spots — yellow-to-orange ocelli that function as a spawning lure — while females, ready to breed, approach and assess displaying males. Spawning itself is brief; the female takes the eggs into her mouth almost immediately, and the pair separates afterwards, the male resuming his display and the female withdrawing to brood alone. How much of this applies in detail to Haplochromis oligacanthus — whether males hold fixed territories, what the display looks like, even whether the egg-spots are present and ocellate — remains unknown, and the description here should be read as the genus-typical expectation rather than a record of this species.

Breeding

Haplochromis oligacanthus is a maternal mouthbrooder, the reproductive mode that defines the haplochromine cichlids; FishBase records 'mouthbrooding by females' for the species, and this is essentially the only reproductive datum on file. Beyond that bare classification, breeding has not been documented — there are no published spawnings, no clutch counts, and no observations of fry development for this fish, whether in the wild or in captivity. In maternal mouthbrooders of this kind the female alone incubates: after spawning she carries the fertilised eggs, and then the developing larvae, in her buccal cavity for roughly two to three weeks, taking little or no food during that time, before releasing free-swimming fry that she may continue to shelter in her mouth for a few days when threatened. Clutch sizes scale with the small body of these fishes; small river haplochromines of comparable size typically lay only a few tens of eggs per spawning (very roughly on the order of 20–50), a figure offered here as the genus-typical expectation rather than a measured value for Haplochromis oligacanthus, for which no fecundity data exist. Spawning triggers in the wild are presumed to track the seasonal flood pulse of the Ubangi, when warming, rising water expands the productive marginal habitats that small mouthbrooders use as nurseries.

In the aquarium

Haplochromis oligacanthus is, for practical purposes, not an aquarium fish. It is known from essentially a single museum specimen and a handful of records; it is not collected for the ornamental trade, does not appear in hobbyist literature or breeding logs, and there is no body of keeping experience to draw on. Anyone encountering this name attached to a living fish should be sceptical, because the cichlids actually sold under similar-sounding names are different animals entirely — most often Ptychochromis oligacanthus, the four-spotted Madagascar cichlid, which is an unrelated Malagasy species, or one of the various Congo dwarf cichlids. If wild-caught material genuinely referable to Haplochromis oligacanthus ever did reach a tank, the sensible approach would follow general husbandry for small Congo-basin riverine haplochromines: a soft, warm, well-filtered set-up with gentle flow, a long footprint giving line-of-sight breaks, sand or fine-gravel substrate, leaf litter and driftwood, and a maintenance temperature around 75–82 °F at pH roughly 6.0–7.8 in soft water. As a maternal mouthbrooder it would be expected to do best in a harem-style group of one male to several females, with brooding females given cover to retreat to, and with frequent water changes to keep nitrogenous waste low. All of that, however, is extrapolation from related fishes; this species itself has no track record in the hobby, and it is honest to say so plainly rather than to dress it up as a known aquarium subject.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Haplochromis oligacanthus as Least Concern. The assessment was carried out on 16 February 2009 by T. Moelants (published 2010) and remains current on the live Red List, which records the species from the Central African Republic and the Democratic Republic of the Congo with an unknown population trend. The Least Concern category reflects the species' presence across a large stretch of the Ubangi and middle Congo rather than any evidence of abundance — in truth, almost nothing is known about how common or rare it is, and the assessment, like the taxonomy, rests on thin material. It carries no CITES listing and is of no commercial interest. The broader context is the Congo basin's freshwater fish fauna, one of the richest and least-studied on Earth and increasingly exposed to deforestation, sedimentation, artisanal gold-mining and its mercury, overfishing of larger species, and the prospect of large hydropower schemes on the main river. None of these is documented as a specific threat to this particular cichlid, but the wider point stands: a species this poorly known could decline, or even prove to be a complex of several species, well before anyone noticed — which is exactly why the 2022 revisers flagged it as needing a proper modern study.
