Taxonomy & naming
Gymnogeophagus missioneiro was formally described in 2015 by Luiz R. Malabarba, Maria Claudia Malabarba and Roberto E. Reis, in a single paper in Neotropical Ichthyology that erected five new species from the rio Uruguay drainage at once. The fish was not new to science in the sense of being unknown — it had appeared in the literature years earlier as 'Gymnogeophagus sp. D' in Wimberger, Reis & Thornton's 1998 mitochondrial-DNA phylogeny of the genus — but it lacked a valid binomial until the 2015 revision tied a name to it. The holotype is an adult male, 4.5 in standard length (register MCP 23495 at the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre), taken from the arroio Ximbocuzinho near São Luiz Gonzaga, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, in December 1992; a series of paratypes spans the rio Piratini and several neighbouring small streams. Within the genus, Gymnogeophagus missioneiro is one member of the Gymnogeophagus gymnogenys clade — a group of mouthbrooding eartheaters first hypothesised by Reis & Malabarba (1988) and recovered as monophyletic by Wimberger et al. (1998), defined by shared colour-pattern characters such as a black bar dropping back-and-downward from the dorsal-fin origin (clearest in juveniles and females). Seven species of this clade occur in the rio Uruguay, and missioneiro is among the three (with Gymnogeophagus constellatus and Gymnogeophagus pseudolabiatus) that are each endemic to a single Uruguayan tributary. No synonyms exist — the name has stood unchanged since its erection.
Morphology
Gymnogeophagus missioneiro is a modestly sized eartheater: the largest measured specimen is the 109.1-mm-standard-length male of the type series, so a maximum of roughly 4.5 in SL (about 5–5.5 in total length) is realistic, with most adults smaller. The body is elongate and laterally compressed, with a pointed snout, a small eye set high on the head, and a caudal peduncle longer than it is deep. As in all members of the genus, the head is 'bare' — naked across the snout — and the fish carries the genus's two osteological signatures: a forward-directed spine atop the first dorsal pterygiophore and an absence of supraneural (predorsal) bones. Fin counts run to 13–15 dorsal spines and 10–11 soft rays, three anal spines and 8–9 soft rays. Mature males develop a small adipose nuchal hump on the forehead, a hallmark of the gymnogenys complex, though it is more restrained here than in the genus's giants. Colour is the species' calling card. Against a pale-brown-to-yellowish body crossed by six to nine faint vertical bars, the unpaired fins glow red: the dorsal fin red with rows of light round spots that draw out into pale stripes toward its rear edge, the caudal fin red and peppered along its whole length with circular white dots, the anal fin orange at the base shading to red and then dusky at the tip. A small dark mark sits just in front of the dorsal-fin origin, and there is a midlateral blotch on the upper flank. The combination that separates it from its closest relatives is precise: no oblique dark band runs from the eye to the dorsal-fin origin or to the front of the head (unlike Gymnogeophagus gymnogenys and Gymnogeophagus mekinos); the fins are red, not yellow (unlike Gymnogeophagus lipokarenos); the lips are not hypertrophied (unlike its rocky-stream neighbour Gymnogeophagus pseudolabiatus); and the soft dorsal carries those distinctive distal white stripes. Sexual dimorphism is pronounced in breeding dress — males are larger, humped, and far more intensely coloured, with longer, pointed dorsal, anal and pelvic fins, while females stay smaller and plainer.
Habitat
The species is known only from the rio Piratini and its tributaries, a system in the western portion of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, that drains into the middle rio Uruguay. In the freshwater-ecoregion framework of Abell et al. (2008), this falls within the Lower Uruguay ecoregion. Its documented extent of occurrence is tiny — the original describers put it at roughly 1,200 square kilometres — making Gymnogeophagus missioneiro one of the most geographically restricted cichlids in South America; unlike several of its congeners it does not extend into the larger rio Negro. These are clear-water streams over rocky and sandy bottoms, the kind of habitat its rock-associated relatives (Gymnogeophagus constellatus, Gymnogeophagus lipokarenos) also favour. The water is subtropical rather than tropical in its thermal regime: the Uruguay drainage of southernmost Brazil and Uruguay swings through a marked seasonal cycle, with warm summers and genuinely cool winters, and Gymnogeophagus generally are temperate-zone fish accustomed to that swing rather than to steady tropical heat. No in-situ chemistry was published for the type localities, but the genus and region are associated with near-neutral to slightly soft, moderately mineralised water of roughly pH 6.5–7.5; depths in these shoaling rocky streams are shallow, on the order of a metre or less. FishBase classes the species as freshwater and benthopelagic.
Feeding
Like its relatives, Gymnogeophagus missioneiro is an eartheater in the literal sense — the common name of the genus comes from the habit of taking mouthfuls of substrate and sifting them for edible particles, expelling the rinsed sand and silt through the gills and mouth. Its dentition fits a generalist bottom-forager: small recurved conical teeth in the jaws for picking, and a robust lower pharyngeal tooth plate bearing enlarged, blunt-cusped, molariform teeth at the back, suited to crushing small hard-bodied prey. No gut-content study has been published for this species specifically, but field work on the genus in the region describes Gymnogeophagus as omnivores that take small crustaceans, aquatic insect larvae and other benthic invertebrates along with some algae and organic detritus winnowed from the bottom; FishBase places the genus at a trophic level near 3.3. In its rocky-stream community it functions as one of several substrate-sifting cichlids working the bottom for invertebrates, alongside other geophagines and the pike cichlids (Crenicichla) that share these waters.
Mating
Gymnogeophagus missioneiro belongs to the mouthbrooding gymnogenys clade, and the mating system of that group is built around the female's solo investment in the brood rather than a lasting pair bond. In the well-studied mouthbrooding congeners, a male holds and defends a territory and courts a succession of ripe females; the striking nuchal hump and blazing breeding colours males develop are signals deployed in this competition. Spawning itself begins on the substrate — both fish clean a chosen surface, often a flat stone — but the partnership is brief: once the eggs are laid and fertilised the male leaves, free to court and spawn again, and the female alone carries the developing clutch. This makes the clade effectively polygynous, in sharp contrast to the monogamous, biparental substrate-spawning seen in the ancestral Gymnogeophagus species. Breeding behaviour specific to Gymnogeophagus missioneiro has not been documented in detail, but its membership in the gymnogenys clade, the male's adipose hump, and the marked sexual dimorphism all point to this same female-led, mouthbrooding system.
Breeding
No spawning account exists for Gymnogeophagus missioneiro itself, so its breeding is described from the well-observed mouthbrooders of its clade. Those species are delayed (larvophilous) mouthbrooders: rather than picking up the eggs the instant they are fertilised, the female first lets them develop on the spawning stone, and only after roughly 24 to 36 hours — just before the eggs hatch — takes the whole clutch into her mouth to incubate. From that moment the male plays no further part; the female broods the larvae buccally and, after release, continues to shelter the free-swimming fry, which dart back into her mouth at any threat (the trigger appears to be the dark circle of her open mouth). Clutch sizes in the clade run to a few hundred eggs — published figures for related mouthbrooding Gymnogeophagus are around 500. Throughout the genus, breeding in the wild is tightly seasonal, concentrated in the southern summer (roughly November to January), when females carrying eggs or fry are routinely found; the rise in water temperature in spring is the cue that brings males into full breeding colour and triggers reproduction. Whether Gymnogeophagus missioneiro picks its eggs up immediately or after the typical delay has not been recorded, but it is presumed to follow the delayed-mouthbrooding pattern of its relatives.
In the aquarium
Gymnogeophagus missioneiro is essentially never seen in the aquarium trade — it is a narrowly endemic, recently described fish, and aquarium accounts of it specifically do not exist. What can be said about keeping it is therefore inferred from its better-known relatives in the gymnogenys complex and the general husbandry of southern Gymnogeophagus, which experienced hobbyists regard as rewarding but with one non-negotiable requirement: cool water.
These are subtropical fish from a climate of warm summers and cold winters, and the single most common mistake keepers make with southern gymnos is keeping them too warm year-round. Held permanently at tropical temperatures they grow listless, lose colour and are short-lived; the genus does best in unheated or seasonally cooled tanks, with a working range around the upper teens to mid-twenties Celsius (roughly 61–79 °F) and a genuine winter cool-down that, in the wild relatives, helps trigger the spring breeding response. Water should be near-neutral and moderately soft to moderately hard (about pH 6.5–7.5), which mirrors the rocky middle-Uruguay streams.
A tank in the 30-plus US-gallon range suits a fish of this size, furnished as a clear rocky stream: a fine sand bed that lets the fish sift naturally (coarse gravel frustrates the eartheating behaviour and can abrade the gills), with rocks, driftwood and a few sturdy plants arranged to break up sightlines and define territories. The mouthbrooding gymnos are, as a rule, less aggressive than the substrate-spawning members of the genus and make reasonable community fish; in practice the closely related species coexist well with medium-sized tetras and with Corydoras and Ancistrus catfishes, becoming territorial mainly at breeding time. Feeding is undemanding — a varied diet of quality dry foods plus frozen or live invertebrates (bloodworm, daphnia, brine shrimp) keeps them in condition. The honest caveat is that none of this has been tested on Gymnogeophagus missioneiro itself; anyone who did acquire it should treat it as a cool-water, soft-rock-stream specialist and apply the lessons learned from Gymnogeophagus gymnogenys, Gymnogeophagus labiatus and the other mouthbrooding gymnos.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Gymnogeophagus missioneiro as Near Threatened (criterion B1b(iii); assessed 14 April 2023 by E. Fernando of the IUCN Freshwater Biodiversity Assessment team, published 2023). The concern is its combination of an extremely small range with an actively declining habitat. The describers noted in 2015 that the species had been 'relatively abundant but not very frequent' in the rio Piratini until roughly the early 1990s, but that recent collecting efforts — including return visits to the type and paratype localities — failed to turn up additional specimens. With an extent of occurrence of only about 1,200 square kilometres, and with the rio Piratini basin under continuing pressure from extensive agriculture (pesticide run-off and siltation degrading water and substrate quality), the population's habitat is judged to be in continued decline; it was reported as neither severely fragmented nor subject to extreme fluctuations, which is why the category is Near Threatened rather than a fully threatened listing. The species carries no CITES or CMS listing. As a single-tributary endemic, Gymnogeophagus missioneiro is far more exposed to local land-use change than its wider-ranging congeners, and the agricultural intensification of the middle-Uruguay drainage of Rio Grande do Sul is the central threat to its future.
