Australoheros minuano is a small, temperate chanchito cichlid of the middle and lower Río Uruguay drainage, ranging across Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil and into Uruguay. It belongs to the kaaygua species group of the genus, and its most striking trait sets it apart from every relative: dominant, breeding males flush pink to red, a colour no other Australoheros shows. A subtropical-to-temperate stream fish rather than a warm-water Amazonian, it endures the cool winters of the southern grasslands and is a biparental substrate spawner in the manner of its better-known cousin, the original 'chanchito' Australoheros facetus.

Taxonomy & naming

Australoheros minuano was described by the Czech ichthyologist Oldřich Říčan and the Swedish ichthyologist Sven O. Kullander in 2008, in their monograph on the Australoheros species of the Uruguay and Paraná River drainages (Zootaxa 1724: 1–51). It was one of four new species erected in that paper alongside Australoheros forquilha, Australoheros charrua and Australoheros guarani. The holotype (MCP 12710, in the collection of the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre) is a 3 in SL fish taken from Arroyo Canoín in the Rio Uruguai drainage of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, on the road from Pirapó to São Nicolau, collected 2 November 1988 by C. Lucena and colleagues; a series of paratypes came from neighbouring arroyos in the same basin. The species had earlier circulated under informal labels — Říčan & Kullander themselves had flagged it as Australoheros sp. 'Uruguai' in 2006, and in the aquarium literature it had been pictured as 'Cichlasoma' sp. 'Tacuarembó' (Litz et al. 2006) and 'Cichlasoma' sp. 'Salto' (Staeck 2003). The genus Australoheros was itself erected by Říčan & Kullander in 2006 to hold the southern-South-American chanchitos formerly lumped in Cichlasoma; the name joins Latin australis, 'southern', to Heros, the type genus of the tribe Heroini. Within the genus, minuano sits in the kaaygua group together with Australoheros kaaygua. A 2022 phylogenetic study by Yazbeck, Říčan and colleagues confirmed it as a valid species while noting that some southern populations — from the Río Yaguarón and Río Tacuary feeding Laguna Merín, and from Río Negro tributaries — are assigned to Australoheros minuano provisionally, pending fresh material from the type locality, so the precise limits of the species remain a live question.

Morphology

Australoheros minuano is a comparatively elongate, modestly sized cichlid. Reported size depends heavily on what was measured: FishBase lists a maximum of 3.5 in SL, but that figure derives from the preserved type series (mostly 1.5–3.5 in SL), whereas Říčan & Kullander's diagnosis states the species reaches more than 4.5 in TL in life — so a well-grown adult is a palm-sized fish of roughly 4.5 in, not the 3 in a quick database read suggests. The body is less deep than that of its close ally Australoheros kaaygua, giving minuano a noticeably slimmer profile, and the head is rounded with an isognathous, slightly downward-pointing mouth (sharper and more upturned in the related Australoheros facetus). The ground colour is yellowish to orange, crossed by the dark vertical body bars and a well-defined midlateral stripe typical of the genus; a small midlateral blotch and a distinct rounded spot at the base of the caudal fin help separate it from relatives, as do four (rather than three) abdominal bars in adults. Diagnostic fin and scale counts include sixteen dorsal spines, six anal spines, a modal twelve pectoral-fin rays, and modally six gill rakers on the lower limb of the first arch. The species' signature feature is in its breeding dress: dominant males turn pink to red, a coloration unique within Australoheros. Sexual dimorphism otherwise follows the genus pattern — males grow larger and develop the red flush and longer fins, while ripe females are rounder-bodied and show the dark genus-typical breeding pattern.

Habitat

The species is native to tributaries of the middle and lower Río Uruguay in Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil, and across the border in Uruguay; whether it also reaches Argentine tributaries is unknown. Beyond the Uruguay drainage proper, populations referred to Australoheros minuano occur in the Río Yaguarón and Río Tacuary, which drain to Laguna Merín, and in tributaries of the Río Negro — placing the fish at the hinge of the Lower Uruguay and Laguna dos Patos / Patos-Merín ecoregions, an area proposed as a corridor and zone of endemism for southern freshwater fishes. These are not Amazonian waters: they lie in the subtropical-to-temperate grasslands (pampa and campos) of southern South America, where winters are genuinely cool. The fish is a benthopelagic inhabitant of small rivers, arroyos and streams — the type and paratype localities are all modest arroyos draining the Uruguay — typically shallow, vegetated watercourses over soft and rocky bottoms. FishBase does not publish a depth range or in-situ temperature, pH or hardness for the species, and field chemistry has not been formally tabulated; the values used here for the temperature and pH tiles are the operating ranges documented for the genus's southern, cold-tolerant chanchitos in captivity (roughly 61–82 °F, pH about 6–8), consistent with a temperate stream fish that experiences a marked seasonal cool-down rather than the stable warmth of the tropics. Depth is given as a shallow stream band (about 0–7 ft) reflecting the documented small-watercourse habitat rather than a measured FishBase range.

Feeding

No dedicated diet study has been published for Australoheros minuano, but its trophic position and feeding style can be read from FishBase and from its close relatives. FishBase places it at a trophic level of about 3.2, the band of a small omnivore that leans toward animal prey. Like other chanchitos it is a substrate-oriented forager that works the stream bottom and the margins of submerged vegetation, taking aquatic insect larvae and other small invertebrates, plus incidental plant material, algae and detritus picked up while grubbing through the sediment. Its caniniform teeth — the outer-row teeth enlarging toward the front of the jaws — suit a generalist that grasps and dislodges small prey rather than crushing hard shells or rasping algae from rock. In its grassland streams it functions as a mid-level benthic omnivore, neither a specialist predator nor a dedicated herbivore.

Mating

Reproductive behaviour has not been described for Australoheros minuano from the wild, but the genus is consistent enough that the broad picture is clear, and Litz et al. (2006) reported on the fish's life colour and breeding in captivity (under the name 'Cichlasoma' sp. 'Tacuarembó'). Australoheros are pair-forming, territorial substrate spawners: a male and female establish and jointly defend a territory, and courtship is accompanied by the intensified vertical-barred breeding livery typical of the genus. In minuano this courtship dress is distinctive because the dominant male reddens, flushing pink to red — the genus's only red-breeding species. Pairs become markedly more aggressive and site-attached as spawning approaches, excluding conspecifics and other fishes from the chosen patch of substrate. As with related chanchitos, a seasonal shift — cooling through the southern winter followed by warming and the onset of the rains — is the natural trigger that brings fish into breeding condition, and keepers reproduce this with a cool rest period followed by a temperature rise.

Breeding

Australoheros minuano is a biparental, open substrate spawner like the rest of its genus. No clutch count specific to minuano has been published; the figure given here is labelled as genus-typical, drawn from the well-documented breeding of congeners such as Australoheros facetus, which deposit a few hundred adhesive eggs (commonly on the order of 200–500, and up to roughly a thousand in large, well-conditioned females) on a cleaned firm surface — a flat stone, a root or the floor of a pit. Both parents share care: the female tends and fans the eggs while the male patrols and defends the territory, and after hatching the free-swimming fry are guarded and shepherded by the pair, herded between feeding pits in the substrate. Captive accounts of the southern chanchitos report that spawning is cued by raising the temperature into the high 20s °C (roughly 82–86 °F) after a cooler resting period, mimicking the seasonal warming of the natural habitat; the fry are not difficult to raise on small live and prepared foods once the parents have brought them up. Because it is a cool-tolerant temperate fish, minuano (like Australoheros facetus) can be bred without a heater in many indoor climates, with the winter cool-down itself serving as the conditioning phase.

In the aquarium

Australoheros minuano is rarely encountered in the hobby and has no established common name outside the informal 'chanchito' applied loosely across the genus. Care records are sparse; what follows is grounded in the biology documented for the species and in the well-established husbandry of its close relatives Australoheros facetus and Australoheros kaaygua, noted as such where species-specific data are absent. A tank of at least 25 US gal (roughly 35.5 in long) should be considered the working minimum for a pair, and 40 US gal or more is preferable once a spawning territory is being defended. The species is pair-territorial and, like other chanchitos, becomes markedly aggressive toward anything that encroaches on its chosen patch during breeding; a larger footprint reduces the intensity of that aggression and gives other fish more room to escape.

The water chemistry requirements are undemanding. The southern grassland streams this fish inhabits span a wide range, and captive keeping over years by hobbyists working with the southern chanchitos has confirmed good health across pH 6.0–8.0 and moderate hardness up to about 15 dH — soft to medium-hard tap water in most temperate cities is acceptable. The key parameter that sets minuano apart from most cichlids kept in Europe and North America is temperature: this is a subtropical-to-temperate fish, native to a climate with genuine winters, and it thrives between 61 °F and 82 °F. In a heated room it can be kept unheated, or with only a low-wattage heater set around 68–72 °F as insurance. Holding the fish at tropical temperatures (above 82–84 °F) year-round stresses them and shortens life expectancy; the seasonal cool-down to 61–64 °F that mimics the natural winter is also the trigger that conditions a pair for breeding.

For decor, a substrate of fine sand or small rounded gravel is appropriate — field sites are modest arroyos over soft and rocky bottoms. A pair benefits from a few flat stones (potential spawning sites), some larger rocks or pieces of driftwood to mark territory boundaries, and a stand or two of robust plants (Vallisneria, Sagittaria, or Java fern on hardscape). Dense planting is not obligatory, and fine-leaved plants will be uprooted once spawning begins. Filtration should be efficient but gentle in flow; the species is not adapted to fast current.

Tankmate choice requires care. During spawning minuano pairs will bully or kill fish that wander into their territory, and even outside breeding the species holds its own against similar-sized fish but can be a persistent threat to smaller or more timid species. Suitable companions in a large tank are other cool-tolerant, robust South American species of similar size — characins such as Buenos Aires tetras, or other non-breeding cichlids held as dither fish at the tank's edges — rather than small delicate fish or anything that occupies the same bottom-level territory. Keeping more than one pair in the same tank is workable only in very large set-ups with clear visual breaks, and is not recommended for beginners. Overall the species is hardy and adaptable once settled, with no particular disease susceptibility beyond what any cichlid shows in poor water quality; it is probably a good fish for an experienced cichlid keeper with unheated or cool-running tanks, but the combination of rarity in the trade, seasonal temperature management, and breeding aggression places it in the intermediate rather than beginner category.

Breeding follows the open-substrate biparental pattern universal in the genus. After a conditioning cool period the temperature is raised gradually into the mid-to-high 20s °C (roughly 77–82 °F); a well-matched, conditioned pair will clean a flat stone or pit in the substrate and lay several hundred adhesive eggs. The female takes primary responsibility for fanning and guarding the clutch while the male patrols the territory perimeter; after hatching (typically within two to three days at 77 °F for congeners) the parents move the wrigglers to shallow pits, and the free-swimming fry are shepherded as a school for several weeks. Fry accept Artemia nauplii and finely powdered prepared food from first free-swimming. The most common keeper error with Australoheros minuano and its relatives is maintaining them too warm year-round: without the seasonal cool-down the fish condition poorly, breeding may not be triggered, and lifespan can be curtailed. The second common mistake is underestimating spawning aggression — insufficient space or too-slow tankmates will result in casualties.

Conservation

Australoheros minuano has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List — the Cichlid Room Companion records it as not evaluated, and no species page exists on the Red List; a 'Data Deficient' tag that surfaces in some aggregator data is not backed by a published IUCN assessment, so the species is best treated as Not Evaluated. That is largely a reflection of how recently it was described (2008) and of unsettled questions about its exact range rather than evidence of either security or threat. The fish is not a narrow point-endemic — it is distributed across tributaries of the middle and lower Uruguay in two countries and into the Patos-Merín system — which on its face suggests a reasonably resilient species. The pressures on its habitat are the familiar ones of the southern South American grasslands: agriculture and cattle-ranching across the pampa and campos, with the attendant siltation, riparian clearing, water abstraction and agro-chemical run-off into the small streams it favours, plus the longer-term reshaping of the Uruguay drainage by dams. None of these is documented as an active threat to this particular cichlid, but they are the backdrop against which any future assessment of a small, range-restricted grassland-stream fish should be read, and a proper Red List evaluation — together with resolved species limits — remains an outstanding need.
