Gymnogeophagus setequedas is a small, narrow-range eartheater of the middle Paraná system, straddling the borderlands where Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina meet. Named for the now-drowned Sete Quedas (Guairá) waterfalls, it is one of the subtropical 'bare-headed' Gymnogeophagus — cichlids of cool, seasonal southern waters that brood their young in the mouth. Its history is bound up with one of South America's great engineering projects: much of its core habitat was inundated by the Itaipú dam, and it now carries a Near Threatened listing on the IUCN Red List.

Taxonomy & naming

Gymnogeophagus setequedas was described in 1992 by the Brazilian ichthyologists Roberto E. Reis, Luiz R. Malabarba and Carla S. Pavanelli, in the journal Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters, from material taken in the middle Paraná system on the Brazil–Paraguay frontier. The holotype (MHNG 2518.19, an 3 in SL specimen housed in the Muséum d'histoire naturelle de Genève) came from the Río Iguazú reservoir at Juan E. O'Leary in the Province of Alto Paraná, Paraguay — a small Paraná tributary, not to be confused with the larger Iguaçu River of the famous falls. The genus Gymnogeophagus was erected by Miranda Ribeiro in 1918 and is diagnosed by two derived traits: the absence of supraneural bones and a forward-pointing spine on the first dorsal-fin pterygiophore. Within the genus, setequedas anchors its own species group; FishBase notes it is set apart from most congeners by having only 23 to 25 scales in a longitudinal series (versus 26 to 29 in Gymnogeophagus gymnogenys, Gymnogeophagus labiatus, Gymnogeophagus balzanii, Gymnogeophagus australis and Gymnogeophagus lacustris). Weidner records the same distinction in slightly different figures (22–25 scales in a longitudinal row versus 26–28 in the rest of the genus) and, following the original describers, treats Gymnogeophagus setequedas, Gymnogeophagus rhabdotus and Gymnogeophagus meridionalis as a monophyletic group — three closely related species sharing a common ancestor, sorted together by this reduced scale count as much as by any single colour character. It is a valid species in the eartheater tribe Geophagini (subfamily Geophaginae), and no synonyms have been proposed since its description.

Morphology

This is a modestly sized eartheater. FishBase gives a maximum of 4 in standard length; Reis, Malabarba & Pavanelli's original series matches closely, with a holotype female of 3 in SL and the largest paratype at 4 in SL, implying a total length around 4.5–5.5 in — one of the smaller members of its genus. The body is moderately elongate and laterally compressed, in the typical geophagine mould, with the steep-fronted profile and subterminal mouth of a bottom-feeder. Weidner rates it the least visually striking Gymnogeophagus: depending on the light the ground colour reads as a shade of blue-green, the belly is pale yellow, and the fins are largely transparent and colourless apart from a light overlay on the unpaired fins. A dark band crosses the forehead and ends behind the eye on each side, and a few rows of iridescent bluish spots scattered across the flanks are the fish's main visual interest. In an aggressive or breeding mood this quiet pattern sharpens into five to six dark vertical bars across the flank, the third of which crosses through the lateral spot. Several pigment characters separate it from its relatives: it lacks the small round dots on the anal, dorsal and caudal fins seen in Gymnogeophagus meridionalis, and it lacks the stripes or elongate dots on the caudal fin that mark Gymnogeophagus rhabdotus. Larger fish develop a faintly reticulated look across the scale rows between the upper and lower lateral lines and a conspicuous narrow dark band along the margin of the dorsal-fin membrane — both useful field marks. Like other members of the genus it lacks the bony 'helmet' of the related Geophagus, the 'naked head' that gives Gymnogeophagus its name. Sexual dimorphism is slight: as in the rest of the genus, males run more colourful and somewhat larger overall, and Weidner's correspondent Werner Darda reports that males additionally carry red-lined caudal-fin spines, a small but useful field mark not otherwise documented for the species.

Habitat

Gymnogeophagus setequedas is a narrow-range endemic of the middle Paraná system, in the borderlands shared by Brazil (Paraná state), Paraguay (Alto Paraná) and Argentina (Misiones). FishBase summarizes its range as Paraná-basin tributaries between the Monday River and the Guaíra (Sete Quedas) area. It was long known almost entirely from this stretch around the former Sete Quedas / Saltos del Guairá falls; a 2017 study reported a notable first record from the Iguaçu River, inside the protected belt of Iguaçu National Park, which the authors called an unexpected extension. Reis, Malabarba and Pavanelli's original account already listed a scatter of Paraná affluents where the species turns up on the Paraguayan side — the Río Carapá, Río Pozuela, Río Acaray-Cué, Río Iguazú, Río Güyraguá and Río São Vicente — and subsequent fieldwork by Ahlander in 1988 and Kullander's team in 1998 added further sites: the Arroyo Zanja Pé, a stream near Lago Ypacaraí, the Arroyo Yhú, residual pools along the Caaguazú–Yhú road, a bay of the Itaipú/Iguazú reservoir near Juan E. O'Leary, the Arroyo Acapytá, a stretch of the Río Güyraguá, and the Arroyo Paso Há near the spa of the same name. Reports of its preferred habitat differ in a way worth stating plainly. Work in Paraguay (Historia Natural, 2017) found it relatively common outside the dammed Itaipú zone and predominantly in lentic (still) habitats — pools and slow stretches of smaller streams over muddy, sandy or partly rocky bottoms. The cytogenetic study from the Iguaçu, by contrast, describes it as a rheophilic species of lotic (flowing) waters and explicitly recommends keeping its remaining habitat undammed. Weidner's own field notes bear this mixed picture out at site level: at the Arroyo Paso Há he found the species over rocky substrate in brownish, slow-flowing water threaded with eddies, while at the nearby Embalse Acaray dam it occupied clear, still water over a bare sandy bottom; Ahlander described the Arroyo Zanja Pé in March as a slow-to-moderate stream 3–10 ft wide and only 0–3 ft deep, with a sandy bottom, grey-brown water, and banks of pasture grasses (Poaceae, Cyperaceae). The honest reading is that it uses both calm pools and flowing reaches of clear, moderately warm subtropical streams, generally shallow enough to wade. As a Gymnogeophagus it belongs to the cool-temperate-to-subtropical end of the South American cichlid world; precise in-situ chemistry has not been published, but both Weidner and the wider literature assume low pH and very soft water across this region, and the fish's waters are markedly more seasonal — cooler in the southern winter — than equatorial Amazonian habitats. Documented occurrences are shallow stream and reservoir-margin records rather than deep open water.

Feeding

Like its eartheater relatives, Gymnogeophagus setequedas is a benthic forager that takes mouthfuls of sand and soft sediment and sorts edible particles — small invertebrates, larvae, detritus and associated organic matter — from the substrate, expelling the grit through the gills and mouth. FishBase places it at an estimated trophic level of about 3.3, the value expected for a small invertebrate-leaning omnivore rather than a strict herbivore or piscivore. Detailed gut-content studies specific to this species have not been published, so its precise wild diet is inferred from genus-typical habits and its body plan: the subterminal, slightly protrusible mouth and the sifting behaviour of Gymnogeophagus point to a diet built around benthic invertebrates and detritus gleaned from stream and pool bottoms. In its community it functions as one of the smaller bottom-working fishes of these middle-Paraná streams.

Mating

Gymnogeophagus are seasonal breeders whose activity is tied to the warmer months of the subtropical year, when rising temperatures and the rainy season cue spawning. In captivity, courtship in Gymnogeophagus setequedas is initiated by the male, who works to win the female over with his fins spread erect almost to the point of tearing and a sustained lateral display alongside her. Pair formation is biparental, with a male and female cooperating over a defended patch of substrate during the spawning period; sexual dimorphism is weak, so pairs are formed on behaviour rather than on conspicuous male ornament. The species shows no strong fixed preference for a spawning surface — Werner Darda's fish have laid on both roots and flat stones — which points to a flexible, opportunistic approach to site selection rather than a rigid ritual. Beyond this, the finer detail of the pre-spawning social structure and territorial scale has not been documented in the wild.

Breeding

Gymnogeophagus setequedas is a mouthbrooder, and both parents share care of the brood — FishBase records simply that 'both parents take care of the fry,' and the genus is characterized in the literature as comprising mouthbrooding cichlids. The genus is best understood as a delayed (larvophilous) biparental mouthbrooder: eggs are first laid and fertilized on a substrate in the manner of an open or cave spawner, then the parents take the developing eggs or newly hatched larvae into the mouth to complete incubation and to shelter the free-swimming fry, taking them up again when danger threatens. This 'spawn first, brood later' strategy is the hallmark that separates Gymnogeophagus from the immediate, ovophile mouthbrooders. The clearest published account of this species spawning is almost accidental: Werner Darda's aquarium fish first bred after a defective heaterstat drove the tank to above 86 °F. He rescued them with an immediate water change, running cold water in until the temperature fell to about 77 °F within a few hours, easing further to 72 °F over the course of the day before drifting back up to 75 °F — and it was against this crash-and-recovery cycle, at a measured pH of 7.6 and total hardness of 12 °dGH, that the fish began to spawn. Darda's later observations suggest the heater failure was incidental rather than essential: a sustained temperature above 77 °F is not a natural feature of the species' cool subtropical habitat and is not required to bring the fish into breeding condition, though a brief rise and fall in temperature does appear to have a genuine stimulating effect. Larval yolk sacs are used up after 6–7 days, at which point the fry must be fed — newly hatched Artemia will do, but Darda rates infusorians better. Brood care runs for roughly three weeks, during which the parents repeatedly dig fresh pits and shepherd the fry into them, particularly overnight. Rearing can be tricky past this point, because the species should not be held at a constant high temperature: dropping the tank to around 59 °F periodically appears to stimulate the immune system even in tank-bred fish, keeping the growing young more active and improving their long-term survival. Clutch size has not been published for this species.

In the aquarium

Gymnogeophagus setequedas is essentially an ichthyologists' and specialists' fish rather than a trade staple. It does appear under 'aquarium: commercial' in FishBase's human-uses listing, and the genus as a whole has a devoted following among keepers of cool-water South American cichlids, but this particular narrow-range species is rarely offered and there is little published, species-specific aquarium husbandry to draw on. Anyone keeping it should treat it as a small (to about 4–4.5 in), seasonally cool-water eartheater. That means a tank long enough to give a pair or small group floor space — on the order of a 47 in / four-foot aquarium — with a deep bed of fine sand so the fish can sift naturally, some smooth rocks and roots for cover and sightline breaks, and gentle to moderate flow that suits a fish found in both pools and flowing reaches.

The single most important and most often-missed point is temperature. Gymnogeophagus are subtropical fish from waters that cool substantially in the southern winter; they are not Amazonian warm-water cichlids and are widely reported to do poorly, and to resist or fail to breed, if kept permanently warm. Weidner is emphatic on this point for setequedas specifically: it should not be held above 77 °F in the long term, and the longer a spell of higher temperature continues, the paler and more sluggish the fish become. If that happens, the recommended fix is a slow cool-down — over time, down to as low as 50 °F — paired with minimal feeding, giving the fish two months or so to regenerate before temperature is gradually raised again; fish that go through this cycle come back with brighter colour and renewed readiness to spawn. Day to day, a seasonal cycle — warmer (mid-to-upper 20s °C) in 'summer' dropping to the high teens or low 20s °C for a cooler winter rest — mimics the natural regime and is the usual key to conditioning and spawning the genus. Furnish the tank with hiding places built from wood, a substrate of fine sand for natural sifting, and a few flat stones laid horizontally on the sand, which the fish readily accept as spawning surfaces; live plants are left alone and can be included freely. Aim for clean, well-oxygenated water of near-neutral pH (about 6.5–7.5) and low-to-moderate hardness, with regular water changes; these are not fish for warm, hard, neglected tanks. Diet is straightforward — the species is a genuine omnivore that adapts to any food offered — so a varied menu of small live and frozen invertebrates (bloodworm, daphnia, brine shrimp) plus a quality sinking prepared food suits it well. As tankmates, choose peaceful, similarly cool-tolerant South Americans and avoid boisterous tropical fish that would compete or overheat the system. The candid summary is that this is a fish for the dedicated Gymnogeophagus keeper, not a beginner's cichlid, and that conservation-minded hobbyists should prioritize responsibly sourced or captive-bred stock given its threatened status in the wild.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Gymnogeophagus setequedas as Near Threatened (NT), under criteria B1b(iii)+2b(iii); the assessment was made on 19 November 2020 by R.G. Frederico and published in 2023, with population trend listed as Unknown. The listing reflects a small, fragmented range across Argentina (Misiones), Brazil (Paraná) and Paraguay, with the principal threats given as habitat loss from agriculture and fragmentation by dams. The dam pressure is concrete and central to this species' story. Its core habitat lay around the Sete Quedas (Saltos del Guairá) falls on the middle Paraná — once among the largest waterfalls on Earth by volume — which were submerged in 1982 when the reservoir of the Itaipú hydroelectric dam filled. Field work since has found the species reduced or absent within the Itaipú-affected zone while persisting in tributaries outside it, and Brazilian regional red lists have flagged it as threatened (it has been treated as Endangered and as Data Deficient in different national assessments). Authors of the Iguaçu cytogenetic study, finding it in flowing water inside a protected park, expressly recommended preserving undammed stretches within its range. The conservation message is consistent across sources: a small-range subtropical endemic whose decline is driven above all by impoundment of the very river system it depends on.
