Taxonomy & naming
Gymnogeophagus taroba was described in 2017 by Jorge Casciotta and Adriana Almirón of the Museo de La Plata, working with Lubomír Piálek and Oldřich Říčan of the University of South Bohemia, in the Argentine journal Historia Natural (volume 7, part 2, pages 5–22). The genus Gymnogeophagus was erected by Alípio de Miranda Ribeiro in 1918 and is diagnosed by a forward-directed spine on top of the first dorsal pterygiophore and the loss of the bony supraneurals — the 'naked' nape that gives the genus its name. The holotype of Gymnogeophagus taroba (MLP 11258, an 3.5 in SL male) was taken at the mouth of the arroyo Ñandú where it enters the Iguazú, inside Parque Nacional Iguazú; an extensive paratype series from neighbouring streams above the falls is housed at La Plata (MLP) and at the IBIGEO collection in Salta. The fish had earlier been noted, but not formally named, in a 2016 survey of the park's ichthyofauna, where the authors flagged it as Gymnogeophagus aff. setequedas. Their description establishes a 'Gymnogeophagus setequedas species group' of three allopatric, endemic species — Gymnogeophagus setequedas, Gymnogeophagus che and Gymnogeophagus taroba — whose ranges are walled off from one another by waterfalls and rapids in the middle Paraná drainage. The species of Gymnogeophagus are informally divided into a Gymnogeophagus gymnogenys group (larvophilic mouthbrooders) and a Gymnogeophagus rhabdotus group (substrate brooders); the setequedas group sits with the substrate-brooding side of the genus, and its members are distinguished from the gymnogenys group in part by lacking the well-developed adipose nuchal hump that male mouthbrooders develop. There are no synonyms — the species is recent and has been recognized as valid since its description by FishBase and the Catalog of Fishes.
Morphology
This is a small cichlid. The largest type specimens measured about 3.5 in standard length (roughly 3.5 in SL), and FishBase lists a maximum of 3.5 in SL; total length, including the tail, runs somewhat longer, so a large adult is on the order of a hand's breadth. The body is compressed and moderately elongate, deepening at the dorsal-fin origin (body depth 40–46% of standard length) before tapering to a caudal peduncle that is deeper than long. The snout is pointed and comparatively long for the group — a useful character separating it from the short-snouted Gymnogeophagus setequedas. Fin counts are XII–XIV dorsal spines with 9–11 soft rays, three anal spines with 7–10 soft rays, and 26–27 vertebrae. In life the back is a light olive crossed by five faint dark bars; a conspicuous black, roughly square blotch sits at mid-flank on the third bar, often haloed in yellow-green, and from behind it run five narrow, bright light-blue horizontal bands to the tail base. A black bar crosses the eye from nape to the lower edge of the gill cover, and bright blue dots scatter across the cheek and operculum. The diagnostic signature of the species lies in the unpaired fins: the spiny part of the dorsal is completely unmarked, while the soft dorsal, the anal and the caudal are patterned with long, thin, whitish light-blue lines running parallel to the rays — in the largest fish the anal and tail lines are edged with red, and the caudal shows the group's most strongly developed white striping and the sharpest contrast between a yellow-to-orange centre and red upper and lower margins. Sexual dimorphism is modest: males are slimmer and longer-finned, with pelvic fins longer than the females' and sometimes drawn out into short filaments on the dorsal, anal and pelvic fins, and breeding adults of both sexes turn the isthmus and throat black. Notably, unlike the genus's mouthbrooders, adult males do not develop a prominent fatty hump.
Habitat
Gymnogeophagus taroba is endemic to the lower río Iguazú basin above the Iguazú Falls, in Misiones Province, Argentina — a genuinely tiny world range, and the only Gymnogeophagus known from the Iguazú system. In the Freshwater Ecoregions of the World scheme this is the Iguassu ecoregion, the Iguaçu/Iguazú basin from its headwaters down to the falls. The fish lives mainly in pools and slow, lentic stretches of small tributary streams (arroyos such as the Ñandú, Yacuí and Lobo) over predominantly muddy or sandy bottoms; the type locality at the mouth of the arroyo Ñandú has a stony substrate veiled in mud. It is not confined to the small streams — a series of specimens came from quiet pools tucked between the rock-gardens of the Iguazú main channel itself, at the walkways to the Garganta del Diablo and the Salto San Martín, habitats the describers judged ecologically very similar to the tributary pools. Despite living within sight of one of the world's largest waterfalls, this is a fish of standing-to-slow water with soft sediments, not a rheophile. The describers did not publish in-situ chemistry for Gymnogeophagus taroba; as a subtropical La Plata–basin eartheater it experiences seasonally cool, soft, near-neutral water, and the depths it occupies are the shallow bands of small-stream pools rather than any deep channel.
Feeding
No gut-content study has been published for Gymnogeophagus taroba specifically, but its anatomy and its membership in the eartheaters leave little doubt about how it feeds. Like other Gymnogeophagus it is a benthic omnivore that takes mouthfuls of the soft bottom and sifts them for edible matter — small invertebrates, larvae, detritus and some plant and algal material — in the winnowing manner that earns the group the name 'eartheater.' Its jaw teeth are small and unicuspid in several rows, and the lower pharyngeal plate carries unicuspid and bicuspid teeth, the typical arrangement of a generalist forager rather than a hard-shell crusher or a piscivore. FishBase places its estimated trophic level near 3.3, consistent with an opportunistic omnivore. In the muddy and sandy pools it inhabits it functions as a bottom-working generalist, processing sediment and the small animals living in and on it.
Mating
The courtship and pair-forming behaviour of Gymnogeophagus taroba has not been documented in the wild or in captivity — it is a recently described fish that, as far as the literature records, has not been kept and spawned. What can be said comes from its placement in the genus. Gymnogeophagus split into two reproductive guilds, and the setequedas group sits with the substrate-brooding lineage rather than with the larvophilic mouthbrooders. Substrate-brooding Gymnogeophagus are typically monogamous: a pair forms, selects and cleans a spawning surface, and both partners defend the territory, with males of many species becoming markedly territorial and at times aggressive during the breeding season. The genus breeds seasonally with the warming of subtropical waters in spring and summer, and reproductive condition in Gymnogeophagus taroba is signalled by the blackening of the throat and isthmus seen in ripe adults of both sexes. Beyond these genus-level patterns, the specifics of this species' mating behaviour remain unstudied.
Breeding
The reproduction of Gymnogeophagus taroba has not been observed and described. Inference must rest on its lineage: as a member of the Gymnogeophagus setequedas group, on the substrate-brooding side of the genus, it is expected to be a biparental open (substrate) spawner rather than a mouthbrooder — males of the species lack the pronounced adipose hump that characterizes the genus's mouthbrooding males, a trait the describers used to separate it from the gymnogenys group. In substrate-brooding Gymnogeophagus the pair cleans a firm surface, the female lays a clutch of adhesive eggs (congeners such as Gymnogeophagus rhabdotus and the meridionalis complex lay on the order of a few hundred eggs — roughly 300 in published aquarium accounts), and both parents guard the eggs and, after hatching, the wrigglers and free-swimming fry, with the female typically the more intense guardian. A behavioural quirk reported across the genus is that threatened fry of even the substrate-spawning species may dart toward the parents' mouths, the dark circle of an open mouth apparently serving as the refuge signal — a possible evolutionary stepping-stone toward the true mouthbrooding seen in the genus's other lineage. Clutch size, egg and larval development times, and parental-care duration have not been recorded for Gymnogeophagus taroba itself and are given here only as genus-typical expectations.
In the aquarium
Gymnogeophagus taroba is not an aquarium fish in any practical sense: it lives entirely inside and around a national park, has an extremely small range, and does not appear in the ornamental trade. There is no published husbandry or captive-spawning account for the species, so any keeping advice can only be extrapolated from its better-known congeners — and that extrapolation comes with a genuine caveat that no one has actually maintained this fish on record.
The single most important lesson the genus teaches is temperature. Gymnogeophagus are subtropical, seasonal fish, and the most consistently abused parameter in aquaria with 'naked eartheaters' is heat: kept too warm for too long they grow listless, lose colour and die young. They need a cool annual rhythm rather than constant tropical warmth — broadly a summer range in the low-to-mid 20s °C and a distinctly cooler winter rest, with reproductive behaviour in the genus beginning only as the water warms past about 61 °F in spring. A small species like this would be comfortable in a modest tank by cichlid standards (something in the order of 30–55 US gal for a pair or small group), aquascaped with a soft sand bottom that allows the natural digging-and-sifting behaviour, plus rock and driftwood to break up sight lines, since substrate-brooding gymnos can be territorial when in breeding condition. Water chemistry is the least of the worries — these fish are tolerant of ordinary hardness and near-neutral pH — but water quality is not: the genus is unusually sensitive to nitrate, with damage to young fish reported from levels as low as around 90 mg/L, so generous filtration and regular water changes matter. Feeding would be straightforward; like its relatives it would take prepared, frozen and live foods readily, with some plant matter welcome. None of this has been tested on Gymnogeophagus taroba, and given its conservation context it is best regarded as a wild fish to be studied in place rather than a candidate for the home aquarium.
Conservation
Gymnogeophagus taroba has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List — its status is Not Evaluated, as confirmed by a live search of the Red List, which returns no record for the species, and by FishBase (Red List version 2025-2). It carries no CITES or CMS listing. That formal silence should not be mistaken for safety. This is a single-basin endemic confined to the río Iguazú above the falls, and although much of its known range lies within the protected Parque Nacional Iguazú, a range this narrow is intrinsically vulnerable. The describers note that the broader middle-Paraná region the setequedas group inhabits has been heavily reshaped by hydroelectric dams (several of the very waterfalls that isolated these species have themselves been drowned by reservoirs) and, in places such as the Itaipú area, by introduced non-native fishes and altered reservoir ecology — pressures that have driven a marked decline in its sister species Gymnogeophagus setequedas there. None of these is documented as a present threat to Gymnogeophagus taroba inside the park, but they describe the kind of pressure to which an endemic of a single waterfall-bounded basin is most exposed, and they make a formal conservation assessment of the species a worthwhile gap to fill.
