Crenicichla tapii is a small pike cichlid endemic to the lower Iguazú River, above the great Iguazú Falls, on the Argentina–Brazil border. It is one of the most unusual members of an otherwise predatory genus: where most pike cichlids are streamlined ambush hunters of fish and large invertebrates, Crenicichla tapii is a periphyton-grazing semi-herbivore, ramming its blunt, subterminal-mouthed head against bare slab rock to scrape the algal film. That tapir-like feeding habit gave it its name — tapii is Guaraní for tapir. Visitors to Iguazú National Park can watch schools of it grazing the flat rock right beneath the footbridges to the Devil's Throat, a sociable, conspicuous fish that breaks almost every rule of its family.

Taxonomy & naming

Crenicichla tapii was described in 2015 by Lubomír Piálek, Klára Dragová, Jorge Casciotta, Adriana Almirón and Oldřich Říčan, in the Argentine journal Historia Natural (Tercera Serie, vol. 5, no. 2, pp. 5–27), in the same paper that named its large-lipped relative Crenicichla tuca and reappraised the other Iguazú endemics Crenicichla iguassuensis, Crenicichla tesay and Crenicichla yaha. The holotype is a 4 in SL female, catalogued as MLP 10560 (DNA283) in the Museo de La Plata, collected in February 2012 in the lower Iguazú River above Iguazú Falls at the mouth of the arroyo Ñandú, inside Parque Nacional Iguazú, Misiones Province, Argentina (25°42′11.7″ S, 54°25′31.2″ W); paratypes are held in the MACN (Buenos Aires) and MLP collections. The fish had appeared in the authors' earlier molecular work under provisional labels — 'Crenicichla aff. yaha Iguazú 1' (Piálek et al. 2012) and 'Crenicichla sp. IGUAÇU' (Varella 2011) — before it was formally named. Within the genus it belongs to the Crenicichla mandelburgeri species complex of the Crenicichla lacustris species group, the 'southern Crenicichla' radiation of subtropical South America outside the Amazon, and it is one of four pike-cichlid species that have radiated in sympatry within the isolated lower Iguazú above the falls, each occupying a distinct feeding niche. In the 2023 integrative revision of the pike cichlids by Varella and colleagues (Geophagini: Crenicichlina), which split off several new genera, this species was retained in Crenicichla proper. No common name is established for it in the hobby or trade.

Morphology

Crenicichla tapii is a small pike cichlid, reaching about 4.5 in SL (the holotype female is 4 in SL); the type series spans roughly 47 to over 4 in SL. The body is elongate but comparatively short-headed for the genus — head length only about 28.6 % of standard length, the smallest of the four lower-Iguazú endemics — with a short snout and a small, narrow mouth set low on a concave, blunt head. The jaws are short and isognathous (or the lower jaw slightly the longer), the tip of the maxilla not reaching the eye; the dentary outer-row teeth form a multi-rowed scraping pad near the symphysis, and the lower pharyngeal plate is fairly robust with crenulated, partly molarized posterior teeth — the dentition of a scraper, not a piscivore. Fin counts run to XX–XXIII dorsal spines with 10–13 soft rays, three anal spines with 8–10 soft rays, and roughly 53–63 scales in the E1 row. In life the ground colour is greenish to yellow-green, deepening to blue-green or grey in adult males; small juveniles are yellow, golden or yellow-green. The flanks carry eight or nine narrow black vertical double-bars that reach down onto the belly, with two more on the caudal peduncle and one or two prominent black blotches below the upper lateral line in the first bar behind the head; juveniles instead show about five dark blotches along the upper flank. A compact, narrow black suborbital stripe marks the cheek, and a small black subcircular spot sits just above the midline of the caudal fin, well clear of the fin base. Crenicichla tapii shows the most pronounced sexual dimorphism in body colour of the four Iguazú endemics: males are darker, more blue-green or grey, and scatter numerous dark dots across the unpaired fins and caudal peduncle, while adult females are plain greenish-yellow with no dots on the body and fins. Females in breeding condition are unmistakable — a golden-to-reddish band runs along the lower mid-body beneath the lateral blotches, the dorsal fin develops a black band along its posterior three-quarters edged with a white margin, and the branchiostegal membrane flushes a distinct yellow-orange.

Habitat

The species is endemic to the lower Iguazú River basin above the Iguazú Falls, the stretch of the Iguazú isolated from the Paraná by the falls themselves and home to a distinctive endemic fish fauna. Its range runs from Misiones Province in Argentina upstream into the neighbouring Brazilian state of Paraná, placing it squarely within the Iguassu freshwater ecoregion (FEOW 346). Crenicichla tapii is a rock specialist: it is relatively common only in the main channel of the Iguazú itself and in the lower reaches of large tributaries (such as the Deseado stream in Misiones), and is absent from small tributaries, especially those lacking rocky bottoms. It is always found in direct association with flat, slab-like exposed rock bearing a growth of periphyton and epiphytic algae, and never over gravel or soft, sediment-covered bottoms — its whole way of life depends on clear, well-lit water flowing over bare rock where an algal film can grow. These are warm, clear subtropical rainforest waters of the Atlantic Forest. The original description does not report in-situ temperature, pH or conductivity at the type locality, and FishBase classes the species simply as freshwater, benthopelagic and subtropical; from the regional setting of these moderately soft, near-neutral Iguazú-basin waters, conditions of roughly 64–81 °F at a pH near 6.5–7.5 can be expected, but those figures are inferred rather than directly measured here. No depth range has been published; as a grazer of shallow, sunlit rock shelves in a large river it lives in the shallow band of a few metres or less, and is routinely watched from the park footbridges in low water.

Feeding

Crenicichla tapii is the genuine oddity of its genus: a periphyton-grazing semi-herbivore in a lineage of predators. Field observation, stomach contents and head morphology all point the same way. The fish gathers in schools on flat rock and grazes the algal film, and individuals have been watched ramming their heads and thick lips against the rock surfaces to scrape it loose. The anatomy is built for the job — a short, concave head; a small, narrow, low-set (subterminal) mouth; short jaws with multiple rows of teeth forming a scraping pad on the dentary; and a robust lower pharyngeal plate with crenulated, partly molarized teeth for processing tough algal and detrital material. This is the same ecomorph that the Crenicichla missioneira flock of the neighbouring Uruguay River evolved independently in Crenicichla tendybaguassu, a textbook case of parallel evolution among these subtropical pike cichlids. The describers themselves coined the name from this habit: tapii, Guaraní for tapir, alludes to the tapir-like grazing mouth and concave head — a feeding mode they call 'highly untypical for the generally predatory Crenicichla.' FishBase nonetheless lists a model-estimated trophic level around 3.2, reflecting how unusual a grazing pike cichlid is and how thin the formal diet data remain. Within the four-species Iguazú assemblage, this rock-scraping niche sets Crenicichla tapii apart from its piscivorous, generalist and large-lipped neighbours, each of which works a different part of the same river.

Mating

Direct observations of courtship and pair formation in Crenicichla tapii have not been published, but the species leaves unusually clear visual clues. It is a gregarious fish, foraging in schools over the rock, and within those aggregations a dominant breeding female stands out in full nuptial dress — the golden-to-reddish flank band, the white-edged black dorsal-fin band, and the vivid yellow-orange branchiostegal membrane. That this is the most strongly sexually dimorphic of the four Iguazú endemics, with the females rather than the males carrying the brightest breeding signal, fits the general pike-cichlid pattern in which the female advertises reproductive readiness and identity to a mate and the pair then defends a territory together. In a river where four closely related pike cichlids live side by side, such a distinctive female breeding dress very likely also functions in species recognition. Beyond this, the social and reproductive behaviour of Crenicichla tapii in the wild remains essentially undocumented.

Breeding

Breeding has not been documented for Crenicichla tapii, in the wild or in captivity; what is known comes from its close relatives and from the breeding coloration the females develop. Pike cichlids of the Crenicichla lacustris group are biparental substrate and cave spawners: a pair cleans a sheltered surface — a rock crevice, the underside of a slab, or a cavity among roots — and lays an adhesive clutch that both parents then guard and tend, the female usually staying close to the eggs and fanning them while the male patrols the surrounding territory. For a rock-dwelling grazer of bare slab habitat, a crevice or cavity among the rocks is the obvious nest site. No egg count has been published for this species; clutches of small to medium congeners run on the order of a few hundred eggs, so a genus-typical figure of roughly 100–300 eggs is the best available estimate. The conspicuous female breeding dress — the white-ringed black dorsal band and the golden-red flank — indicates the usual cichlid pattern of intense, signalled biparental care. Spawning triggers, egg and larval development, and the duration of parental care all remain unstudied. One incidental captive note from the description is suggestive: an aquarium specimen was seen digging with its head half-buried in sandy substrate, hinting that the grazing, head-ramming behaviour carries over into how these fish work their environment in confinement.

In the aquarium

Crenicichla tapii has effectively no aquarium history. It is a small, range-restricted endemic of a national park, described only in 2015, and it is not established in the ornamental trade; the handful of specimens kept have been research animals rather than hobby fish. Anyone who did encounter it would be keeping a fish unlike almost any other pike cichlid — a sociable rock-grazer rather than a solitary predator — and the husbandry would have to reflect that. The right setup would be a long tank floored with smooth flat stones and slabs rather than deep sand, with strong, well-oxygenated flow and bright lighting to encourage the growth of an algal and biofilm 'aufwuchs' that the fish could graze, much as a Lake Tanganyika or Malawi rock-grazer is kept. Clear, clean, moderately soft to neutral water in the high teens to mid-twenties Celsius would match its subtropical Iguazú origins, and because it is a schooling species it would likely show its best colour and most natural behaviour in a group rather than as a lone pair. Diet should lean vegetable — spirulina- and algae-based prepared foods, blanched greens and biofilm grazed in situ — supplemented with some small meaty items, rather than the fish-and-shrimp diet a typical pike cichlid expects. At only about 4.5 in it is not a large or especially aggressive cichlid, but its narrow ecological needs (bare grazable rock, clear flowing water, a vegetable-led diet) make it a specialist's fish in theory and a museum-and-river fish in practice. For now it is best appreciated where it lives, grazing the rock beneath the Iguazú footbridges, rather than in the home aquarium.

Conservation

Crenicichla tapii has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List (status Not Evaluated as of Red List version 2025-2, per FishBase), nor is it listed under CITES — unsurprising for a fish formally named only in 2015. No formal assessment of its population exists. What is clear is that it is a narrow-range endemic confined to the lower Iguazú above the falls, and that its survival is tied to a specific and vulnerable habitat: clear water flowing over exposed slab rock, where enough light reaches the bottom for periphyton to grow. The Iguazú ecoregion is one of the most heavily impacted in the Neotropics, fragmented by a cascade of large hydroelectric dams, altered in flow and clarity, and burdened by one of the region's longest histories of non-native fish introductions; reservoir formation, sedimentation and reduced water clarity are precisely the changes that would erode the bare, sunlit rock this grazer depends on. Within the protected core of Iguazú National Park the species is locally common and readily observed, which is reassuring, but its dependence on a specialized habitat in a dammed and invaded basin argues for a formal assessment of its status in due course. None of these basin-wide pressures is documented as a present threat to Crenicichla tapii specifically, but they are the backdrop against which a habitat-specialist endemic should be watched.
