Cnesterodon omorgmatos is a tiny, little-known South American livebearer endemic to a single sub-basin of the upper Iguaçu river system in Brazil. Described only in 2001 and known to science from nothing more than its original type series, it is a fish of small, stony, cascading streams rather than of aquarium shops — a diminutive poeciliid, barely three centimetres long, that has never entered the hobby and that the IUCN now lists as Critically Endangered. Its story is less about colour and care than about the fragility of a restricted-range fish whose whole documented world is a handful of square kilometres of vulnerable headwater habitat.

Taxonomy & naming

Cnesterodon omorgmatos was described by Paulo H. F. Lucinda and Julio C. Garavello in 2001, in a paper that simultaneously erected a second new species, Cnesterodon hypselurus, from the upper rio Paraná drainage. The genus Cnesterodon was established by Garman in 1895 and gathers a group of very small New World poeciliids of southern and south-eastern South America; the genus name derives from the Greek 'knester' (a scraper), a reference to the dentition of these little toothcarps. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Cnesterodon omorgmatos Lucinda & Garavello, 2001 as the valid name, placing it in the family Poeciliidae, subfamily Poeciliinae, within the order Cyprinodontiformes.

The specific epithet omorgmatos is of Greek derivation and appears to allude to a streak- or groove-like marking on the fish, though the exact gloss is not captured from a primary source here and should be treated as tentative. The species carries the English common name "Torres toothcarp" in FishBase. Beyond the original description and the standard checklist and database entries, the taxonomic literature on this species is thin: it is one of many small, narrowly distributed Neotropical poeciliids that are well defined by their describers but rarely revisited, and the bulk of what is recorded about it traces back to that single 2001 study and the type material it was based on.

Morphology

Cnesterodon omorgmatos is a very small fish. FishBase records a maximum length of about 1 in SL, and the IUCN assessment gives a body size of roughly 0.5–1 in, so even a fully grown adult is a slender, finger-nail-scale animal typical of the genus. Like other members of Cnesterodon it is a compact, laterally compressed toothcarp built for life among stones in shallow, flowing water rather than for sustained open-water swimming.

Detailed morphometric and meristic characters separating this species from its congeners are set out in the original description by Lucinda and Garavello, which distinguished it from Cnesterodon hypselurus and from previously known members of the genus. As in all poeciliids the sexes differ in the structure of the anal fin: mature males bear a gonopodium, an intromittent organ formed from modified anal-fin rays, while females retain an ordinary fan-shaped anal fin. Species-specific colour and patterning data are sparse in the sources at hand, and FishBase carries no photograph of the living fish, instead using a generic poeciliid illustration — a reminder of how little visual documentation exists for this species.

Habitat

The species is endemic to Brazil, occurring in the rio Jordão sub-basin within the rio Iguaçu (Iguaçu River) basin, part of the larger upper rio Paraná system. It is a freshwater, benthopelagic fish of tropical headwaters. The type specimens were collected in a cascading, waterfall-broken stream — a 'riacho encachoeirado' — with a stony, rocky bottom, and the IUCN assessment notes that the species inhabits the lentic, or still-water, pockets of such small streams rather than the fastest-flowing reaches.

This is a fish of small, low-volume watercourses, and its documented distribution is extremely restricted: the IUCN gives an area of occupancy of just 5 mi², and the species is known only from its type series. Such headwater streams in the Iguaçu and upper Paraná drainages sit in a heavily modified landscape, with a high degree of human interface around the small streams that this fish depends on. The combination of a naturally tiny range and a vulnerable habitat type is central to the species' conservation status, and means that almost everything recorded about where it lives comes from a single collecting event.

Feeding

No species-specific feeding study is available for Cnesterodon omorgmatos, and the dietary information here is necessarily general. FishBase places the species at a modelled trophic level of about 3.0, consistent with a small omnivore or micro-predator rather than a strict herbivore or piscivore. Small poeciliids of this kind typically graze and pick at a mixed diet of algae, diatoms, detritus, and tiny aquatic invertebrates and insect larvae taken from the substrate and the water column.

In a stony, cascading stream of the sort this species occupies, such food would come largely from the biofilm and small invertebrate fauna of the rocks and the still margins where the fish shelters. Because the species is not kept in aquaria and has not been the subject of any feeding or gut-content work in the sources consulted, anything more precise would be speculation; the trophic-level estimate from FishBase is a model output rather than a measured value. Data on its diet are best regarded as sparse.

Mating

As a member of the family Poeciliidae, Cnesterodon omorgmatos reproduces by internal fertilisation. Mature males possess a gonopodium — a slender intromittent organ formed from modified rays of the anal fin — which is used to transfer sperm directly to the female, the defining reproductive feature of the New World livebearers. No courtship behaviour has been described for this particular species, but in small poeciliids generally males pursue females and attempt insemination through a mix of brief displays and direct copulation attempts, and females are often able to store sperm internally and produce successive broods from a single mating.

Species-specific data on mate choice, courtship and any sexual signalling in C. omorgmatos are absent from the available sources, and the genus is not one in which such behaviour has been well studied. What can be said with confidence is the general poeciliid pattern: fertilisation is internal, the male gonopodium is the means of sperm transfer, and reproduction does not involve egg-laying in open water. Beyond that, the mating biology of this species should be considered undocumented.

Breeding

Cnesterodon omorgmatos is viviparous, like other poeciliids: following internal fertilisation the female carries the developing embryos and gives birth to free-swimming young rather than laying eggs. In Cnesterodon the embryos are understood to be largely lecithotrophic — nourished mainly by their own yolk reserves, with minimal placental provisioning — so the genus is not strongly matrotrophic in the way some other poeciliids are. Broods in small poeciliids of this size are typically modest, but no measured gestation period or brood-size figure is available for this species.

Superfetation — the simultaneous carrying of broods at different stages of development, a notable feature of some livebearers — has not been documented in C. omorgmatos and should not be assumed for it. Because the fish is known only from its type series and has never been bred or maintained in captivity, there is no observational record of its reproductive cycle, timing, or fry development. The reproductive account here therefore rests on the general biology of the family and genus rather than on any study of this species, and the species-specific breeding data are best flagged as sparse.

In the aquarium

Cnesterodon omorgmatos is effectively absent from the aquarium hobby. No dedicated care profile exists for it, and the genus Cnesterodon as a whole comprises tiny South American poeciliids that are essentially never seen in the trade and are not maintained by livebearer hobbyists. This species in particular is known only from its original type series, so there is no body of captive experience to draw on for tank size, water parameters, feeding in captivity, or compatibility.

Anything written about keeping it would be extrapolation from its wild habitat — small, stony, tropical headwater streams with still-water pockets — rather than established practice, and the responsible position is simply to note that husbandry data do not exist. Given its Critically Endangered status and its restriction to a single threatened sub-basin, the species is also a poor and inappropriate candidate for collection for the trade. For the aquarist, C. omorgmatos is best understood as a fish of conservation interest rather than a fish to keep.

Conservation

Cnesterodon omorgmatos is assessed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List, under criterion B2ab(iii), with the assessment dated 7 November 2018 and published in 2022. The listing reflects an extremely small and declining range: the species is endemic to Brazil in the rio Jordão sub-basin of the rio Iguaçu basin, is known only from its type series, and has a recorded area of occupancy of just 5 mi², with a continuing decline inferred in the area, extent and quality of its habitat.

The threats identified in the assessment all bear on the small, low-volume streams the species depends on, which sit in a landscape with a high degree of human interface. They include habitat alteration and degradation; residential, commercial and urban development; dams and water-management works; pollution from agricultural and forestry effluents, soil erosion and sedimentation, and herbicides and pesticides; and pressure from invasive species. The population trend is recorded as unknown.

For a fish with so tiny a documented range and so little study behind it, the conservation picture is dominated by the vulnerability of restricted-range Brazilian freshwater fishes as a group: narrowly distributed headwater endemics that can be lost before they are well understood. The most useful contribution an atlas can make is to record clearly what is known — and to be honest about how much is not.
