Gymnogeophagus tiraparae is a small, hump-headed eartheater endemic to the rivers of Uruguay, described only in 2009 from the río Negro and río Tacuarí basins. A member of the "naked" Gymnogeophagus eartheaters of the subtropical La Plata region, it belongs to the genus's mouthbrooding, gymnogenys-like lineage: breeding males develop a dramatic vertical fatty hump that rises from the lip to the dorsal fin, and ripe females carry their young in the mouth. It is a fish of clear, cool, seasonally variable rivers rather than the warm blackwaters of the Amazon, and it is named for an 18th-century Guaraní woman who founded a long-vanished frontier town near the river where the first specimens were caught.

Taxonomy & naming

Gymnogeophagus tiraparae was described in 2009 by the Uruguayan ichthyologists Iván González-Bergonzoni, Marcelo Loureiro and Sebastián Oviedo, all then at the Facultad de Ciencias of the Universidad de la República in Montevideo, in the journal Neotropical Ichthyology (volume 7, issue 1, pages 19–24). The holotype — an adult male of 4 in standard length — was collected in November 2005 from the río Tacuarembó at Road 26 near Pueblo Ansina, Tacuarembó Department, a tributary of the río Negro within the lower río Uruguay drainage. The original combination is the one still in use; no synonyms have been proposed and the name has remained stable. The genus Gymnogeophagus was erected by Alípio de Miranda Ribeiro in 1918 and revised by Reis & Malabarba in 1988; it is set apart from other eartheaters by a forward-directed spine on the first dorsal pterygiophore and the absence of bony supraneurals. Within the genus, Wimberger, Reis & Thornton (1998) recognised two lineages, one of substrate spawners and one of mouthbrooders. Gymnogeophagus tiraparae falls firmly in the mouthbrooding, strongly dimorphic "gymnogenys-like" group, and the molecular work of Pereyra & García (2008) on the Gymnogeophagus gymnogenys species complex placed it as one of several well-supported clades closely allied to Gymnogeophagus gymnogenys — indeed the authors noted that a proper revision of Gymnogeophagus gymnogenys sensu stricto is still needed to untangle the group. The species sits in the subfamily Geophaginae (tribe Geophagini).

Morphology

This is a modest-sized eartheater: FishBase lists a maximum of 4 in standard length, while the type series examined in the original description spanned roughly 1.5–5 in SL, so well-grown wild adults reach around 4.5–5 in. The body is elongate and laterally compressed, with a convex predorsal contour and a caudal peduncle longer than it is deep. The single most striking feature is reserved for reproductive males, which grow a large adipose (fatty) hump on top of the head that is deeper than the upper border of the dorsal fin and presents an almost vertical front profile, sweeping up from the upper lip to the dorsal-fin origin — a more exaggerated, blunt-fronted version of the nuchal hump seen across the gymnogenys group. In life the back is brownish to light olive over a yellowish (males) or olive (females) belly, marked by a dark blotch on the nape, dark spots and blotches along the flank below the dorsal fin, and a well-defined round lateral spot. Six or more parallel bright green to pale blue bands run lengthwise along the body, and the unpaired fins are richly patterned: a red ground colour on the dorsal between two horizontal series of pale blue dots, and a red-grounded caudal fin covered in rows of round hyaline dots that become small and vertically aligned toward the distal edge. The authors diagnosed it from all congeners by the combination of the vertical-fronted hump, the absence of transverse body bars, and these specific dot-and-stripe patterns. Sexual dimorphism is conspicuous: only mature males develop the hump (and the longest, lyrate-tailed finnage and green lips), while females stay plainer and lack it.

Habitat

Gymnogeophagus tiraparae is endemic to Uruguay, where it has a curiously disjunct range across two drainages. The bulk of its records come from the middle río Negro basin and its main tributaries — the río Yí, río Tacuarembó and río Tacuarembó Chico — which drain to the lower río Uruguay. A second, much more restricted population lives in the río Tacuarí, part of the laguna Merín (Laguna Mirim) system that drains to the Atlantic. The authors noted that this split distribution mirrors that of two annual killifishes of the genus Austrolebias, and is thought to reflect a recent connection between the upper Tacuarí and nearby río Negro headwaters (as close as 6 mi apart) through river capture, against the older backdrop of marine transgressions and regressions along the Uruguayan coast. The collecting localities are described as large rivers — higher than stream order six — with clear water, sandy or rocky bottoms and little aquatic vegetation. These are not tropical waters: like the rest of the genus, Gymnogeophagus tiraparae lives in the subtropical La Plata region, where rivers swing through a wide seasonal temperature range and cool markedly in the southern-hemisphere winter. The original description does not report in-situ pH, hardness or temperature figures, so specific chemistry is inferred from the genus's clear-water, near-neutral, moderately mineralised habitats rather than measured for this species.

Feeding

No dedicated diet study has been published for Gymnogeophagus tiraparae, but its placement leaves little doubt about how it feeds. Gymnogeophagus are "eartheaters" in the geophagine mould: they take mouthfuls of sand and fine sediment, sift edible particles from the substrate, and expel the cleaned grains through the gill openings and mouth, winnowing out small invertebrates, larvae and organic detritus. FishBase places the species at a trophic level of about 3.3, consistent with a benthic invertivore-omnivore that works the river bottom for chironomid larvae, micro-crustaceans, aquatic insect nymphs and associated detritus, supplemented by plant and algal material. Keepers of related naked eartheaters report that, although they forage at the substrate, these fish will also rise into the water column and take food from the surface, so the species is best regarded as a bottom-oriented generalist rather than an obligate sand-sifter. In its clear, sandy-bottomed home rivers it fills the role of a small benthic forager.

Mating

The reproductive biology of Gymnogeophagus tiraparae is read from its membership in the mouthbrooding gymnogenys-like clade and from the dramatic seasonal change that comes over males. Outside the breeding season the sexes look broadly similar, but as the season approaches, mature males transform: they build the towering vertical adipose hump on the head, intensify their green-and-blue body bands and lips, and develop extended, lyrate fins. This is classic advertisement morphology — the hump and heightened colour signal a male's condition to females and rivals during courtship and the establishment of spawning territories. As in other dimorphic Gymnogeophagus, courtship and spawning are thought to take place over open substrate or a cleaned hard surface, after which the female takes responsibility for the brood. The pronounced, seasonally switched-on dimorphism is itself one of the defining behavioural traits the describers used to assign the species to the derived, mouthbrooding lineage of the genus.

Breeding

Gymnogeophagus tiraparae is a maternal mouthbrooder — a so-called "delayed" or larvophilic mouthbrooder typical of the gymnogenys group, in which eggs are first laid and fertilised on a substrate and the female then takes the eggs or newly hatched larvae into her mouth to incubate them. The direct field evidence is in the original description: females were collected carrying juveniles in their mouths at the end of spring and through summer (the southern-hemisphere warm season, roughly November to March), which both confirms the mouthbrooding mode and pins the spawning season to the warmest part of the year in these strongly seasonal rivers. The describers list mouthbrooding as one of the shared derived traits of the lineage, alongside the male nuchal hump and reduced fin squamation. No clutch-size or fecundity count has been published specifically for Gymnogeophagus tiraparae; mouthbrooding Gymnogeophagus generally carry modest broods of a few dozen young, far fewer than the open substrate spawners of the genus, with the trade-off being the protection of oral incubation. Parental care is therefore extended and maternal: the female broods eggs and larvae in the mouth and continues to shelter the free-swimming fry there when threatened until they are large enough to fend for themselves.

In the aquarium

Gymnogeophagus tiraparae is rarely seen in the hobby and has no established record as an aquarium fish; the notes below are extrapolated from the well-documented husbandry of its close relatives (Gymnogeophagus gymnogenys, Gymnogeophagus meridionalis, Gymnogeophagus rhabdotus and the other "naked" eartheaters) and should be read as informed guidance rather than a tested protocol for this species.

The overriding lesson from keeping any Gymnogeophagus is temperature. These are subtropical, not tropical, fish, and the most consistently abused parameter in their care is heat: kept permanently warm, they tend to be short-lived and breed poorly. A seasonal regime that lets the tank track room temperature — cool (into the upper 50s to low 60s °F / mid-teens °C) in winter and warming through the 70s into the low 80s °F (low-to-high 20s °C) in summer — better mirrors their home rivers and is widely reported to improve condition and breeding readiness in the genus. A heater is best used only to set a floor, not to hold a constant tropical temperature.

Give a small group a tank of around 55 US gal (≈50 US gallons) or more; despite their size, naked eartheaters carry plenty of attitude and need room. A bed of fine sand is essential so they can sift naturally, with scattered rounded rocks, driftwood and a few sturdy or potted plants to break up sightlines — the clear, sandy, lightly vegetated rivers they come from are a good visual model. Filtration should be generous but flow moderate, and clean water with regular changes matters. Aim for near-neutral, moderately soft to moderately hard water (roughly pH 6.5–7.5); the species' specific field chemistry is unpublished, so these figures follow the genus rather than measured values for Gymnogeophagus tiraparae.

Diet is undemanding: a varied menu of sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, daphnia and brine shrimp, with some plant or spirulina content, suits an omnivorous sifter well. Tankmates should be chosen for similar cool-water tolerance and a peaceable temperament — other southern South American characins or catfish, or congeners — bearing in mind that males become territorial and humped-up in the breeding season. The realistic caveat is availability: this is a localised Uruguayan endemic seldom if ever offered in the trade, so any keeping would almost certainly involve wild-type stock from specialist sources.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Gymnogeophagus tiraparae as Least Concern. The assessment was carried out on 19 November 2020 by R.G. Frederico and published in 2023, and lists Uruguay as the only country of occurrence, with the population trend recorded as unknown. It carries no CITES or CMS listing. FishBase notes the species in subsistence fisheries but it is of low fishing vulnerability. As a fish endemic to a single small country, with a naturally fragmented range — and with one of its two populations confined to a very restricted patch of the río Tacuarí in the laguna Merín drainage — its long-term security depends on the health of relatively few river systems. The middle río Negro in particular is heavily modified by large hydroelectric dams (the type-adjacent material includes specimens from the Baygorria reservoir), and the broader pressures on Uruguayan rivers — damming, agricultural runoff and habitat alteration — form the backdrop against which a narrow-range endemic like this should be watched, even though none is currently flagged as a population-level threat.
