Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Astatotilapia bloyeti is the workaday haplochromine of Tanzania's coastal rivers — a small, olive-and-iridescent mouthbrooder that turns up, often as the only haplochromine present, in the Wami, Ruvu, Pangani, and Rufiji systems and their feeder streams. Henri-Émile Sauvage named it in 1883 from fish a French station chief, Captain Bloyet, sent home from the Tanganyikan interior, and for well over a century it has been a taxonomic catch-all: a name pinned onto look-alike river haplochromines from Mali to the Nile until later workers peeled most of those away. Today it sits, somewhat uneasily, in the genus Astatotilapia — though FishBase, the Catalog of Fishes, and the IUCN cannot quite agree whether to call it Astatotilapia or Haplochromis — and the honest truth is that this is a common, resilient, but genuinely under-studied fish whose own boundaries are still being drawn.

Taxonomy & naming

Henri-Émile Sauvage described this fish in 1883 as Hemichromis bloyeti, in the Bulletin de la Société philomathique de Paris, from material collected in what is now eastern Tanzania. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes lists two syntypes lots — BMNH 1898.2.15.2 (one specimen, transferred from the Paris museum) and MNHN A-6513 (five specimens) — and gives the type locality as 'Kandoa, Tanzania,' which Turner, Ngatunga & Genner (2021), re-examining the types, pin down more precisely to the Mkondowa River near the town of Kilosa in the Wami drainage.

The generic home of the species has never settled. It has been shuffled through Hemichromis, Tilapia, Ctenochromis, Haplochromis, and Astatotilapia, and the major databases still disagree: the Catalog of Fishes (current status, updated 2026) treats it as valid as Astatotilapia bloyeti, FishBase carries it under Astatotilapia (while noting Eschmeyer earlier placed it in Haplochromis), and the IUCN Red List assesses it under the name Haplochromis bloyeti. The disagreement is real rather than clerical — the riverine 'haplochromines' of East Africa are a sprawling, incompletely revised assemblage, and where the dividing line between Haplochromis and Astatotilapia should fall is one of the open problems of African cichlid systematics. We follow the Catalog of Fishes and FishBase in using Astatotilapia here, while flagging that the placement is provisional.

The name has also long been a magnet for synonyms. Turner and colleagues (2021) concluded that Astatotilapia strigigena (Pfeffer, 1893), Astatotilapia kilossana (Steindachner, 1915), and Astatotilapia paludinosa Greenwood, 1980 are all junior synonyms of Astatotilapia bloyeti, with Astatotilapia sparsidens (Hilgendorf, 1905) a close relative that may prove to be either a synonym or a sister species; the type series of several of these nominal taxa are catalogued under bloyeti in GBIF. Just as importantly, much of the fish's supposed pan-African range is an artefact of misidentification: the IUCN assessors restrict true bloyeti to the Rufiji/Ruaha, Ruvu, Wami, and Pangani systems of Tanzania and Kenya, and treat older records from Chad, Mali, Niger, Uganda, and Burundi as misidentifications or undescribed species. A separate Lake Chad–basin form once called bloyeti is now recognised as Astatotilapia tchadensis. The species' own limits, in short, are still being actively redrawn.

Morphology

Astatotilapia bloyeti is a small, moderately elongate haplochromine. FishBase gives a maximum size of about 6 in standard length, though most specimens encountered — particularly the females netted in shallow streams — are considerably smaller, and the largest figure rests on relatively few records. In overall build it is a generalised, unspecialised river cichlid: a laterally compressed body of moderate depth, a continuous dorsal fin, a single pair of nostrils, and the three-pointed (tricuspid and bicuspid) jaw teeth typical of the generalist haplochromines, set in a moderately sized, slightly protrusible mouth.

Colour follows the familiar haplochromine pattern of a drab, cryptic female and a flashier, advertising male. Females and non-territorial fish are an olive to grey-green, sometimes with faint vertical barring and a darker lachrymal stripe; field-caught fish placed in a photo tank have been described showing a 'fright' pattern of barring with a pinkish tinge along the dorsal surface. Breeding males darken and develop metallic blue-green and yellowish tones, and — the key reproductive cue in this lineage — carry orange or yellow 'egg-spot' ocelli on the anal fin. Detailed, quantitative morphometric and meristic data for the species in its modern, restricted sense remain thin: because the name was for so long applied to a grab-bag of similar river fish, much of the older descriptive literature does not cleanly apply to true bloyeti, and a formal redescription is still wanting. Reported sexual dimorphism is the standard haplochromine pattern — males larger and more colourful, females plainer — rather than anything precisely measured for this species.

Habitat

This is a fish of Tanzania's eastern, Indian-Ocean-draining river systems and their associated small lakes. Under the restricted modern concept, its range covers the Wami, Ruvu, and Rufiji/Ruaha basins and the Pangani system (including Lake Jipe on the Kenya–Tanzania border), spilling marginally into Kenya; Turner and colleagues note that it appears to be the only haplochromine present in the Wami system, an unusually solitary role for an East African cichlid. FishBase and the Catalog of Fishes both summarise the distribution simply as the coastal river systems of Tanzania, and stress that reports from elsewhere in Africa are not conspecific.

FishBase characterises the species as freshwater and benthopelagic, found in rivers, streams, and small freshwater lakes, across a tropical temperature band of roughly 75–82 °F. The IUCN habitat classification lists permanent rivers, streams, and creeks together with permanent freshwater lakes as suitable. Beyond that, in-situ ecological data are sparse. The one vivid field snapshot comes from a closely related, undescribed haplochromine of the same Pangani-region assemblage, caught in a small, well-vegetated stream at the base of Mount Meru in Arusha National Park — narrow, shallow (around half a metre deep), warm, and slightly alkaline (pH near 7.6) — which gives a fair sense of the kind of structured, vegetated stream margins these fish occupy, but is an analogue rather than a direct measurement on bloyeti itself. No depth profile or hardness range measured specifically on confirmed Astatotilapia bloyeti is available — FishBase carries no depth field and the IUCN assessment leaves its depth limits blank — so the depth recorded here (a shallow 0–7 ft band) is the documented envelope of the structured, vegetated stream margins and lake shallows these fish occupy rather than a measured maximum, and the hardness field is left null; the pH figure recorded here (a neutral-to-slightly-alkaline band of roughly 7.0–8.5) is the chemistry typical of these eastern-Tanzanian coastal rivers and small lakes rather than a measurement on bloyeti itself, and is flagged as such.

Feeding

Like most generalised riverine haplochromines, Astatotilapia bloyeti is best understood as an opportunistic omnivore rather than a specialist. FishBase estimates a trophic level of about 3.1, consistent with a diet weighted toward small animal prey but including plant material. No published, quantitative gut-content study on confirmed Astatotilapia bloyeti in its restricted modern sense is available, so the dietary picture is assembled from its generalist jaw morphology and from accounts of the river haplochromines it lives among: aquatic insects and their larvae, small crustaceans and other invertebrates picked from the substrate and vegetation, terrestrial insects taken at the surface, the occasional small fish, and some algae and plant matter. (An often-cited stomach-content table listing 'Astatotilapia bloyeti' from a coastal river in Nigeria falls well outside the species' verified East African range and almost certainly refers to a different, misidentified haplochromine, so it is not used here.) The functional summary — a flexible, substrate-and-surface-foraging generalist — is well supported even where species-specific quantitative data are not, and it is exactly this dietary breadth that lets the fish persist across such a variety of streams, rivers, and small lakes.

Mating

Astatotilapia bloyeti is a polygynous, maternal mouthbrooder, and its courtship follows the template that runs through the haplochromine cichlids of East Africa. Males are the territorial, displaying sex: a dominant male takes up and defends a small territory — typically focused on a flat rock or a patch of open substrate — and from it courts passing females with fin-flaring and body-shivering displays, while keeping rival males at bay. Females are not territorial and move among males' courting arenas. Because a single male will attempt to spawn with several females in succession, the operational sex ratio is strongly skewed, and males invest heavily in colour and display rather than in any parental duties.

The pivotal piece of the mating ritual is the egg-spot, the orange-rimmed ocellus (or ocelli) on the male's anal fin. As described for this group of riverine Astatotilapia, a gravid female follows the displaying male to his spawning site, the pair circle one another, and the female lays a few eggs at each half-turn and immediately takes them into her mouth; when she then mouths at the egg-spots on the male's trailing anal fin, she takes in his milt, fertilising the clutch already in her buccal cavity. This 'egg-dummy' mechanism, classic for the lineage, means fertilisation happens inside the female's mouth and that pair bonding is fleeting — once spawning is complete the male resumes courting other females and plays no further part. Direct behavioural study of Astatotilapia bloyeti specifically is limited; the account here reflects the well-documented and highly conserved reproductive behaviour of the surrounding river-haplochromine assemblage to which it belongs.

Breeding

Breeding is maternal mouthbrooding: FishBase classes the species as an ovophilic, agamous (non-pair-bonding) maternal mouthbrooder, meaning the female alone incubates and tends the brood and there is no lasting pair bond. After the in-the-mouth fertilisation described above, the female carries the developing eggs and then the larvae in her buccal cavity, where they are aerated and protected through the most vulnerable phase of life; brooding females have been netted from the wild still holding a full clutch despite the shock of capture. By analogy with the closely allied river haplochromines of the same region, incubation runs on the order of two to three weeks before the female releases free-swimming fry, and for a further period she allows the young to retreat back into her mouth when threatened. Clutch size has not been measured for confirmed Astatotilapia bloyeti; in these small haplochromines clutches are modest — typically on the order of twenty to fifty eggs, the figure recorded in the fact box as a clearly labelled genus-typical estimate rather than a species-specific count — a trade-off inherent in mouthbrooding, where the number of young is capped by what will fit in the mother's mouth. The released fry are large and well-developed and can take small live foods such as newly hatched brine shrimp almost immediately, which — together with the species' high reproductive resilience (FishBase estimates a population doubling time under fifteen months) — helps explain how Astatotilapia bloyeti maintains itself across seasonal, sometimes harsh, river habitats.

In the aquarium

Astatotilapia bloyeti is not a common aquarium fish — it appears occasionally in specialist cichlid circles, mainly among keepers interested in riverine East African haplochromines, but it is not established in the general hobby and is almost never seen in pet-trade chains. That scarcity is not because it is difficult to keep; the reverse is true. As a generalist river haplochromine from the neutral-to-alkaline coastal rivers of Tanzania, it is hardy and unfussy compared with the rift-lake specialists that dominate the East African cichlid hobby, and it rewards an honest, straightforward setup rather than demanding anything elaborate.

Water chemistry should reflect the species' home rivers: a pH of roughly 7.2–8.0 and moderate to moderately hard water (around 8–15 dGH is a reasonable target) kept at 75–81 °F will suit it well. These are not the extreme, highly mineralised conditions of Lake Malawi or Tanganyika, but plain soft or acidic water — the default for many community-tank keepers — is unsuitable and will slowly stress the fish. Municipal tap water in most temperate cities tends to be neutral to slightly alkaline and moderately hard, which often requires little adjustment; keepers on very soft water should buffer up gently with crushed coral or a commercial rift-lake salt mix at modest dose. The hardness figure in the facts box is left null because no measured hardness range specific to confirmed bloyeti habitat has been published, so the estimate above is a practical basin-typical guide rather than a species-specific datum.

For a small group of adults — one male and two or three females — a tank of around 39.5–47 in (roughly 55–65 US gal) is a reasonable minimum; a larger footprint is better, because males become territorial and defend a patch of substrate when they are in breeding condition. The tank does not need to replicate a deep lake: shallow, structured setups with a sand or fine-gravel substrate, some flat stones or slate pieces on which males can display, and patches of robust planting (Vallisneria, Java fern anchored to wood) mirror the vegetated stream-margin habitats the fish actually uses. Open water at the top is appreciated. Tight-fitting lids matter — like most haplochromines, this fish will jump if startled.

Tankmates need to be chosen with care. Astatotilapia bloyeti is moderately aggressive in the typical haplochromine manner: males are territorial toward other males of the same or similar species, and a solitary male in a too-small tank will badger females relentlessly. Suitable companions are other robust, similarly sized fish from comparable eastern-African river or lake-margin habitats — mid-sized barbs, larger tetras, or other peaceful but not timid cichlids that can hold their own without being outright combative. Mbuna or other highly aggressive rift-lake cichlids are a poor match; small, slow, finnage-heavy fish will be harassed. Keeping multiple males is possible in a longer tank (59 in+) with visual breaks, but is not recommended for beginners.

Breeding in captivity follows the standard maternal-mouthbrooding script: the male displays and defends a spawning site (often a flat stone), the pair spawn in brief bouts with the female collecting eggs into her mouth, and fertilisation occurs when she mouths the egg-spots on the male's anal fin. The female then carries the clutch — typically in the range of twenty to fifty eggs for a haplochromine of this size — for roughly two to three weeks, eating little or nothing. A common keeper mistake is to strip the female too early, or to leave her in the main tank where the male's persistent courting pressure will cause her to swallow or spit the brood prematurely. Moving the brooding female to a bare, quiet holding tank once her throat is visibly distended is the simplest solution; the fry, when released, are large enough to take freshly hatched brine shrimp immediately. Water quality throughout should be stable — large, abrupt water changes during mouthbrooding can trigger premature release. Overall, Astatotilapia bloyeti is a straightforward choice for the keeper who wants an authentic, little-known East African haplochromine without the exacting rift-lake chemistry demands: genuinely interesting but not particularly challenging.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List lists the species — under the name Haplochromis bloyeti — as Data Deficient (assessment by M. Hanssens, last assessed 1 June 2004, published 2016; reviewed by J. Snoeks and W.R.T. Darwall). The justification given is simply 'Taxonomy uncertain': because the name has historically been applied to a mixture of forms and the modern, restricted concept is still being clarified, the assessors judged there was not enough resolved information to assign a threat category. The population trend is recorded as unknown, and the assessment is explicitly flagged as needing updating. FishBase repeats the Data Deficient status, and the species carries no CITES or CMS listing; its fishing vulnerability is rated low and it is considered harmless to humans.

What can be said is reassuring as far as it goes. Astatotilapia bloyeti is widespread across several large Tanzanian river basins, is often the dominant or sole haplochromine where it occurs, and — like many generalist river cichlids — tolerates a broad range of conditions, all of which argue against any imminent, range-wide threat. The pressures on its habitat are the ordinary ones for East African coastal rivers: agricultural runoff, sedimentation, water abstraction, and habitat modification, plus the longer-term risk that introduced tilapiine cichlids and other non-natives pose to small endemic haplochromines. But with the species' own boundaries still unsettled and almost no targeted ecological or population data, the most honest assessment remains the one the IUCN reached — that we simply do not yet know enough to say more, and that resolving the taxonomy is itself the first conservation priority.
