Hybridization watchi

Labrochromis ishmaeli is a snail-crushing cichlid endemic to Lake Victoria, one of the hundreds of haplochromines that radiated explosively in East Africa's largest lake. A maternal mouthbrooder armed with hugely enlarged pharyngeal jaws and flat, millstone-like teeth, it makes its living crushing the shells of bottom-dwelling molluscs. The IUCN lists it as Critically Endangered (Possibly Extinct), a casualty of the Nile-perch invasion and eutrophication that gutted the lake's cichlid fauna, though field workers report it persisting in shallow inshore water and it survives in the aquarium hobby.

Taxonomy & naming

Labrochromis ishmaeli was described by George Albert Boulenger in 1906 in his paper 'Descriptions of new fishes discovered by Mr E. Degen in Lake Victoria' (Annals and Magazine of Natural History, ser. 7, vol. 17, pp. 433–452). The Swiss collector Edward Degen gathered the type material in Uganda, and the type locality is Bunjako, on the northern shore of Lake Victoria. The species belongs to the vast Lake Victoria haplochromine flock — a swarm of several hundred closely related cichlids (placed in the tribe Haplochromini, subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae) that diversified within roughly the last 15,000 years, one of the textbook cases of rapid adaptive radiation. Because that radiation outran the rate at which generic boundaries could be drawn, most of its members were lumped for decades into a catch-all Haplochromis. Greenwood's revisionary work split the flock into many smaller ecological genera, and on the basis of its molluscivorous feeding apparatus this species is now widely placed in Labrochromis (as Labrochromis ishmaeli) — the genus FishBase and the Catalog of Fishes currently use for it. We keep the historical Haplochromis heading here because it remains the name under which the fish is most often catalogued, traded and discussed. The epithet honours George Ishmael, an interpreter to the Police Court at Entebbe who, in Boulenger's words, gave Degen 'valuable assistance during his stay in Uganda' — a dedication to a helper rather than to a fellow naturalist.

Morphology

This is a medium-small, robustly built cichlid. FishBase gives a maximum of 5.5 in standard length, and the taxonomic monograph of the Lake Victoria haplochromines records a size span of roughly 2.5–7 in across the material examined, so adults typically run a few centimetres either side of hand-length. The body is the deep, laterally compressed haplochromine form, with a fairly steep head profile. Colour is muted by the standards of the flock: aquarium males show a greyish to brassy-olive base with darker vertical barring and some metallic sheen on the flanks and unpaired fins, the head and throat warming as a fish comes into spawning condition, while females and non-breeding fish are a plainer silvery-brown — Labrochromis ishmaeli is not one of the gaudy blue or red Victoria species. The feature that defines the fish is internal: its lower pharyngeal jaw (the second set of jaws in the throat) is greatly enlarged and stout, and the pharyngeal teeth are blunt and molariform, forming a paved crushing surface built to pulp snail and bivalve shells. This is the hallmark of the pharyngeal snail-crushers (Labrochromis), as opposed to the oral shellers that pluck and shake snails free of their shells with their mouth teeth. Sexual dimorphism follows the usual haplochromine pattern: breeding males are larger and more strongly coloured, and males carry the egg-spots (ocelli) on the anal fin that figure in spawning, while females stay drabber.

Habitat

Labrochromis ishmaeli is endemic to Lake Victoria, the shared inland sea of Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania, and is found nowhere else. Within the lake it is an inshore, bottom-associated fish. FishBase records it from inshore regions with a soft mud bottom, with only a few specimens taken over sand and shingle; the haplochromine monograph documents it over a broader range of substrates and across a depth range of about 3–92 ft, while FishBase gives a shallower working figure of down to roughly 30 ft. Either way it is a fish of the shallow to moderately deep sublittoral rather than the open lake. Lake Victoria is a warm, large, relatively shallow equatorial lake (it straddles the equator between about 1°N and 3°S), and its inshore waters are hard and alkaline: pH commonly runs in the range of roughly 7.2–9.0 and surface temperatures sit in the mid-20s, FishBase citing an upper figure near 77 °F for this species' environment, with inshore temperatures across the lake generally around 73–81 °F. These soft-mud snail beds, where molluscs are abundant, are exactly the habitat a shell-crusher exploits.

Feeding

Labrochromis ishmaeli is a specialist molluscivore — a snail and bivalve crusher. Examination of stomach and intestinal contents of specimens spanning roughly 3.5–5.5 in SL showed the fish feeding almost exclusively on molluscs, with only the accidental insect taken alongside (FishBase, after the CLOFFA treatment). The mechanism is the enlarged pharyngeal mill described above: the fish takes a whole snail into its throat and crushes the shell between the molariform pharyngeal teeth, swallowing the soft body and ejecting shell fragments. This places it among the pharyngeal crushers of the flock rather than the oral shellers, two convergent solutions to the same hard-shelled prey that recur throughout the Lake Victoria and Lake Malawi radiations. FishBase estimates its trophic level near 3.6. As a dedicated benthic durophage, the species occupies a clearly defined slot in the lake's food web, converting the abundant mollusc biomass of the muddy sublittoral into fish flesh — a niche that also made it dependent on the integrity of those snail beds.

Mating

Like the great majority of Lake Victoria haplochromines, Labrochromis ishmaeli is a polygynous maternal mouthbrooder with no lasting pair bond. The breeding system is best described as a harem or arena arrangement: a male establishes and defends a small territory — typically a shallow pit or cleared depression over the muddy bottom — and displays to any female that passes through, attempting to court several females in turn over the course of a season. There is no biparental defence and no nest in the substrate-spawning sense; the male's contribution ends at fertilisation. Courtship follows the familiar haplochromine choreography in which the male's anal-fin egg-spots play a role at spawning. The species is reported to be sexually active over a period of about three years and to live some six to nine years in aquarium care, so an individual female may brood many times across her life.

Breeding

Spawning is non-seasonal — in the warm, stable waters of Lake Victoria reproduction can occur year-round, and no tightly defined spawning grounds are recognised. After courting at the male's pit, the female lays a small batch of eggs and immediately takes them into her mouth; the male fertilises them by way of the egg-spot display, and the female then carries the developing eggs and larvae in her buccal cavity, a textbook ovophile (mouth-incubating) maternal mouthbrooder. Clutch and brood size are small, in keeping with the species' modest body size: roughly 15–25 fry per brood are reported. The female broods the young to an advanced free-swimming stage and may continue to shelter the fry in her mouth when threatened after they begin to forage. This combination of internal incubation, small high-investment broods and the absence of any need for a substrate nest is the reproductive strategy shared across the haplochromine flock, and it is one reason these fish have proved relatively straightforward to maintain in captivity even as they have vanished from much of the wild lake.

In the aquarium

Labrochromis ishmaeli is rarely kept and is essentially a specialist's fish rather than a general-trade cichlid, but it is one of a number of Lake Victoria haplochromines that conservation-minded hobbyists and a few public aquaria have maintained — in some cases the captive stock may now matter more than the wild population. It is not a difficult aquarium fish where it can be obtained. A single-species tank or a group of compatible Victoria haplochromines of around 55 US gal or more suits it, with one male to several females to spread his attention and reduce harassment, exactly as for other arena-spawning mouthbrooders. Water should reflect the lake: hard and alkaline, pH around 7.5–8.5 and a temperature in the mid-20s °C (about 75–81 °F). A soft sand bottom lets it forage naturally, and some rockwork or other structure gives subordinate females and non-spawning fish places to retreat from a displaying male; like its relatives the males can be persistently aggressive in confined quarters.

Feeding plays to its biology. As a natural shell-crusher it relishes hard-shelled invertebrate foods — small snails, and frozen or live shellfish-based items — and it readily takes good-quality sinking cichlid pellets, frozen bloodworm, mysis and similar fare; offering whole snails lets it exercise the pharyngeal mill that makes the species what it is. Keepers should avoid mixing it with the gaudier Victoria species in a way that allows hybridisation, since the flock's members cross readily and uncontrolled crossing is the chief threat to the integrity of captive 'assurance' populations. Kept as a clean line in appropriate water, it spawns its small broods of 15–25 fry without much fuss, and a holding female stripped or left to release her young will yield fry that grow on easily — the reason this Critically Endangered fish persists in the hobby at all.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Labrochromis ishmaeli as Critically Endangered (Possibly Extinct), under criterion C2a(ii), assessed on 31 March 2010 by Witte, de Zeeuw and Brooks, with a decreasing population trend; its range spans the Kenyan, Tanzanian and Ugandan waters of Lake Victoria. The species was one of the very many endemic haplochromines devastated by the transformation of Lake Victoria in the late twentieth century. The introduction and population explosion of the predatory Nile perch (Lates niloticus) from the late 1970s onward, compounded by severe eutrophication, falling water clarity and deoxygenation of deeper water, collapsed an estimated several hundred haplochromine species — many to extinction — in one of the most catastrophic vertebrate biodiversity losses on record. As a benthic mollusc specialist tied to inshore snail beds, Labrochromis ishmaeli was squarely in the path of these pressures. The picture is not wholly hopeless: as Nile-perch stocks were later reduced by intense fishing, some haplochromines rebounded, and F. Witte has noted that this species remained quite abundant in shallow inshore areas — which is why the assessment qualifies it as 'possibly' rather than certainly extinct. Even so, the wild population is small and fragmented, hybridisation risk persists in the disturbed lake, and the maintenance of clean captive lines remains an important hedge against final loss.
