Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Haplochromis erutus is a small haplochromine cichlid endemic to Lake Edward, the freshwater rift lake straddling the border of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda. Described in 2020 as one of three Lake Edward "oral-mollusc shellers," it makes its living wrenching the soft bodies of snails out of their shells with short, stout jaws — and its name, Latin for "torn out," records exactly that. It has not been assessed by the IUCN.

Taxonomy & naming

Haplochromis erutus was described in 2020 by Nathan Vranken, Maarten Van Steenberge and Jos Snoeks of the Royal Museum for Central Africa, in a paper in the Journal of Fish Biology titled "Similar ecology, different morphology: three new species of oral-mollusc shellers from Lake Edward." It was named alongside two companions from the same study — Haplochromis concilians and Haplochromis planus — all three diagnosed from a morphometric study of 47 specimens. The holotype (a male catalogued MRAC 2018.008.P.0111 in the Tervuren museum) was taken at the Kagoro fishing ground in open water off the Congolese shore of Lake Edward, at roughly 0°12′50″S, 29°49′20″E; paratypes are held at the same museum and at the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences in Brussels. The species belongs to the great Lake Edward haplochromine flock, an assemblage of an estimated 60–100 species of the genus Haplochromis that, like the much larger Lake Victoria superflock, radiated from a Lake Kivu ancestor. Modern molecular work tends to subsume many of these lacustrine East African haplochromines under broader genera such as Haplochromis sensu lato or Astatotilapia, and the generic limits of this flock are genuinely unsettled; following the practice of Snoeks, van Oijen and the describers themselves, the atlas retains the familiar genus heading Haplochromis. Remarkably, the authors found that erutus, concilians and planus differ considerably from one another in shape yet each independently converges on the appearance of a different oral-sheller species from Lake Victoria — a textbook case of parallel trophic evolution between the two great lakes.

Morphology

Haplochromis erutus is a small cichlid, with the largest examined specimen measuring 3.5 in in standard length; like most members of its flock it is a modestly sized, laterally compressed fish. Fin counts run to 15–16 dorsal spines with 8–10 soft rays, three anal spines with 7–9 soft rays, and 29–30 vertebrae. Its defining feature is the feeding apparatus: a small, rectangular mouth with a short upper jaw that curves downward about halfway along its length, combined with blunt, bicuspid, recurved outer teeth and stouter inner teeth in the lateral part of the upper jaw — an arrangement built for grabbing and tearing rather than crushing. This combination separates it from every other Haplochromis except Haplochromis bicolor of Lake Victoria, from which it differs in its much larger eye (about 35–41% of head length, versus 21–32% in bicolor), slightly narrower interorbital and shorter snout, and a shallower supraoccipital crest. Within Lake Edward it shares stout jaws and enlarged lips with Haplochromis concilians, Haplochromis labiatus, Haplochromis eduardianus and Haplochromis planus, but is told apart by jaw proportions and by its large (rather than strongly thickened or lobed) lips. The describers note coloration as a useful field character: dominant males are beige-silver, in contrast to the silver-blue males of Haplochromis concilians and the red flanks of Haplochromis bicolor, and the piebald (blotched) patterning frequently seen in female bicolor appears to be absent in erutus.

Habitat

Haplochromis erutus is endemic to the Lake Edward system in the western branch of the East African Rift, a freshwater lake of about 2,202 mi² and 384 ft maximum depth shared by the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda and drained, via the Semliki River, into the Nile basin. Lake Edward is connected to shallow Lake George through the Kazinga Channel, and the two are treated as a single biological system; this paper's specimens came from the main lake. Unlike the soda lakes of the rift, Lake Edward is a true freshwater body, though a moderately alkaline one: published limnology gives surface-water temperatures of roughly 77–82 °F, pH around 8.6–9.1, and conductivity near 1,000 µS/cm. The holotype was caught in open water at the Kagoro fishing ground, and FishBase classes the species as pelagic; the describers observed that the oral-mollusc shellers as a group were most abundant in the littoral (near-shore) zone, where their snail prey concentrate, so erutus is best understood as a fish of the shallow, productive margins of the lake rather than its deep offshore waters. No precise depth band has been published for the species, but the shallow littoral habitat where it and its prey are concentrated implies the upper few metres of the water column.

Feeding

The species is, as its describers' title promises, an oral-mollusc sheller: a snail specialist that does not crush shells but instead seizes a snail's exposed soft body in its short, stout jaws and wrenches it bodily out of the shell — the behaviour memorialised in the name erutus, "torn out." FishBase records its diet as mainly molluscivorous, and stomach-content examination in the original study confirmed that erutus (with concilians) feeds opportunistically on molluscs. Its blunt, recurved bicuspid outer teeth and reinforced inner teeth are the grabbing-and-tearing tools that this mode of feeding requires, distinct from the heavy molariform pharyngeal mills of true shell-crushers. FishBase places it at a trophic level of about 3.3. Ecologically it is one of several mollusc-eating trophic groups in the Lake Edward flock, and the fact that erutus, concilians and planus partition this same broad resource while differing in jaw architecture is precisely the niche-partitioning story the describers set out to document.

Mating

No courtship or social behaviour has been described specifically for Haplochromis erutus — it is known essentially from preserved museum material and stomach contents, not from behavioural observation in the wild or in captivity. Its mating biology must therefore be inferred from the wider haplochromine flock to which it belongs. East African lacustrine haplochromines are maternal mouthbrooders in which sexual selection has driven conspicuous male nuptial coloration; the beige-silver dominant-male colour the describers report for erutus is consistent with a sexually dichromatic, male-display breeding system. In these fishes territorial or display-ready males court ripe females, who then take the fertilised eggs into the mouth. Whether erutus males hold fixed territories, aggregate in leks, or court opportunistically over the littoral bottom is not documented; this section is left deliberately thin rather than filled with detail the literature does not support for the species.

Breeding

Breeding has not been documented for Haplochromis erutus. No nest, clutch, brooding observation or fry account exists for the species in the scientific or hobbyist literature, and FishBase carries no reproductive data for it. Inference from the flock is, however, secure on the central point: like essentially all East African lacustrine haplochromines, erutus is expected to be a maternal mouthbrooder, the female incubating the eggs and then the larvae in her buccal cavity and continuing to shelter the free-swimming fry in her mouth for a period after they hatch. Clutch sizes in small haplochromines of this size class are typically modest — on the order of a few dozen comparatively large eggs (roughly 20–60 in congeners) — but no count has been published for erutus itself, and that figure is given only as a genus-typical guide. Parental care is by the female alone; the male contributes no brood care after spawning. Spawning triggers, egg and larval development times, and brood duration are all unrecorded for this species.

In the aquarium

Haplochromis erutus is essentially never kept in the aquarium. It is a recently described, narrow-range Lake Edward endemic with no presence in the ornamental trade — there is no established import chain, no captive population, and no husbandry literature for it. Lake Edward sits within Virunga National Park and the surrounding conservation landscape, and its haplochromines are studied rather than collected for the hobby, so any aquarium account is necessarily hypothetical. Were the species ever maintained, the relevant template would be that of other small mouthbrooding haplochromines from the alkaline rift lakes: hard, alkaline water (pH on the order of 8.5, matching the lake's roughly 8.6–9.1 in situ) at about 75–81 °F, a tank with open swimming space over sand, and a sex ratio of one male to several females to spread male aggression during spawning — the usual pattern for keeping Victoria/Edward-type haplochromines. A snail-feeding specialist would also need a diet rich enough in invertebrate matter to sustain it. None of this should be read as a recommendation that the fish is available or appropriate for hobby keeping; it is not.

Conservation

Haplochromis erutus has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List — a direct search of the Red List returns no assessment, and FishBase likewise lists its status as Not Evaluated. This is unsurprising for a species described only in 2020. As a narrow-range single-lake endemic it is, in principle, more exposed to localised threats than a widespread fish would be, and the Lake Edward fishery and its catchment face real pressures: heavy artisanal fishing, sedimentation and nutrient loading from a growing human population around the lake, and the broader instability of the region. Against that, much of the lake lies within Virunga National Park on the Congolese side and the Queen Elizabeth conservation area on the Ugandan side, which affords its habitat some protection. The Lake Edward haplochromine flock as a whole remains taxonomically understudied — the describers note an estimated 60–100 species, fewer than half of them formally named — so the conservation status of erutus and its many flock-mates is, at present, genuinely unknown rather than secure.
