Aquascape & setup

Hard, alkaline, well-buffered water of the kind that defines Lake Rukwa — stability matters more than chasing a single number.

Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Haplochromis fuelleborni is a small haplochromine cichlid endemic to Lake Rukwa, a shallow, alkaline, endorheic lake in the Rift Valley of southwestern Tanzania. Reaching only about 5 in (4.5 in), it is one of a modest flock of six Rukwa-basin haplochromines and a fish almost unknown in the aquarium hobby. Its taxonomy has been a moving target: described in 1903 as a Tilapia, sunk into synonymy, resurrected, and most recently moved to the genus Astatotilapia, it is a useful case study in how unstable cichlid names can be away from the famous great lakes.

Taxonomy & naming

The fish was described in 1903 by the German ichthyologists Franz Martin Hilgendorf and Paul Pappenheim as Tilapia fuelleborni, based on material from the southeastern shores of Lake Rukwa (lectotype ZMB 16305 in the Berlin museum, with two paralectotypes, ZMB 32480). The species epithet honors Friedrich Fülleborn, a German physician and parasitologist who collected in the region; the genus name Haplochromis combines the Greek haploos, "single," with chromis, an old name for a perch-like fish.

Its subsequent history is a tangle. Van Oijen and colleagues (1991) treated fuelleborni as a junior synonym of the widespread riverine Haplochromis bloyeti. Lothar Seegers, in his 1996 monograph on the fishes of the Lake Rukwa drainage, re-validated it as a distinct species, Haplochromis fuelleborni, and that is the name FishBase still uses today. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, however, now lists the current valid combination as Astatotilapia fuelleborni, following George Turner's reassessment of these East African haplochromines (recorded as a 2022 personal communication, and developed in a 2021 preprint by Turner, Ngatunga and Genner). That preprint points to the genuine uncertainty here: it discusses the Rukwa Astatotilapia as possibly comprising undescribed taxa, and Seegers himself had already separated the southeastern "fuelleborni" from a northern form he called Haplochromis 'rukwa green.' In short, the name on the tank label depends on which authority you follow, and the underlying species limits are not fully settled.

Morphology

This is a small cichlid. FishBase gives a maximum length of about 5 in (4.5 in) total length, drawn from Seegers' Rukwa monograph, and that figure is echoed by the regional species lists. In overall build it is a typical "modern haplochromine": a laterally compressed, perch-shaped body with a single continuous dorsal fin, the generalized form shared by hundreds of riverine and lacustrine Astatotilapia-type cichlids across East Africa.

Detailed, reliable color descriptions for live Rukwa fish are scarce in the public literature, and we will not invent them. By analogy with its close relatives, breeding males would be expected to show the brighter coloration and the egg-spot ocelli on the anal fin that characterize the group, with females and juveniles a plainer silvery-grey. The most honest statement is that fuelleborni is separated from its congeners chiefly on meristic and morphometric grounds in Seegers' work rather than on any single dramatic field mark, which is part of why its boundary with the northern "rukwa green" form remains debated.

Habitat

Haplochromis fuelleborni is endemic to the Lake Rukwa drainage in the Rukwa, Katavi and Songwe regions of southwestern Tanzania, between Lake Tanganyika and Lake Malawi. The type series came from the lake's southeastern shore. The Freshwater Ecoregions of the World account for Lake Rukwa records two small endemic species flocks in the basin — the cichlid genus Haplochromis and the catfish genus Chiloglanis, each with six described species — and fuelleborni is one of those six cichlids.

The water body itself shapes everything about this fish. Lake Rukwa is endorheic, with no outlet: rivers such as the Rungwa, Momba, Lupa, Chambua and Songwe flow in, and water leaves only by evaporation. It is shallow — averaging only a few meters, with the deeper southern basin reaching roughly 33–49 ft (33–49 ft) — and strongly alkaline and saline, with reported pH values around 8 to 9.2 and conductivity near 2,000–2,200 µS/cm. As a benthopelagic species it occupies the soft-bottomed, often turbid waters near shore and the river-mouth deltas, fringed by papyrus and Phragmites swamp, rather than the clear rocky reefs of the neighboring great lakes.

Feeding

Specific gut-content studies of Haplochromis fuelleborni are not available in the public literature, so its diet is best described from its place in the community rather than from direct observation. FishBase estimates a trophic level of about 3.4, which places it as a small mid-level carnivore — the typical role of generalist haplochromines, which take aquatic insects, small invertebrates, zooplankton and detritus, with larger individuals sometimes including small fish.

That generalist, opportunistic feeding makes ecological sense in Rukwa. The lake's primary production swings with the seasons: studies of its phytoplankton found a diatom-dominated community (with dinoflagellates, cyanobacteria and green algae) whose abundance rises at the onset of the rains and falls again with the turbid peak floods. A small, flexible feeder is well suited to such a variable, nutrient-pulsed system, where rigid trophic specialists would struggle.

Mating

No detailed reproductive study of fuelleborni has been published, so its mating biology is inferred from the well-documented habits of its relatives rather than directly observed. In Haplochromis and Astatotilapia cichlids, males are typically the more colorful, territorial sex, displaying to passing females and defending small spawning sites. Breeding males of the group advertise with the egg-spot ocelli on the anal fin — a lure that figures in the spawning sequence — while females remain plainer.

On temperament, the only honest signal comes from the genus, not the species. Aquarists keeping related Astatotilapia such as Astatotilapia burtoni and Astatotilapia latifasciata consistently report territorial, sometimes pugnacious males during courtship and spawning — useful context, but explicitly an analogy, since fuelleborni itself is essentially absent from hobby experience. Given Rukwa's habitat, spawning is likely tied to the seasonal water-level and productivity cycle, when shallow margins flood and food is abundant; that is a reasonable expectation, not a documented fact.

Breeding

Like its relatives, Haplochromis fuelleborni is a maternal (ovophile) mouthbrooder — the reproductive mode that defines the modern East African haplochromines and is reflected in its English name, "Fuelleborn's mouthbrooder." After a brief courtship the female takes the fertilized eggs into her mouth and incubates them there, releasing free-swimming fry only after they are well developed; care is provided by the female alone. No clutch count has been published for this species, but genus-typical broods for a 4.5 in haplochromine run on the order of a few dozen eggs.

No captive spawning of genuine Rukwa stock has been documented, so the developmental details — incubation period, fry size at release, age at maturity — are not on record for fuelleborni specifically. What can be said with confidence is the mode: a single brooding female, eggs and then fry carried in the buccal cavity, and no biparental or substrate-guarding behavior, consistent with every well-studied member of the group.

In the aquarium

For practical purposes, Haplochromis fuelleborni is not an aquarium fish. It has no presence in the ornamental trade, and targeted searches of the major cichlid forums turn up its relatives — burtoni, latifasciata and other Astatotilapia — but not fuelleborni itself. It is a fish of scientific collections and fisheries surveys, not dealers' tanks. Anyone who encounters the name on a stock list should be skeptical and ask for collection data, because confusion with other species is easy.

That confusion is worth spelling out, because the hobby does know a "fuelleborni" — just not this one. The popular Lake Malawi mbuna Labeotropheus fuelleborni (the blue mbuna) shares the species epithet, honoring the same collector, but is a completely different, larger, rock-grazing cichlid from a different lake. If you keep a "fuelleborni," it is almost certainly the Malawi Labeotropheus, not the obscure Rukwa haplochromine. Should genuine Rukwa stock ever appear, the sensible expectation — drawn from its size and from its alkaline, hard-water home — would be a small group in a roomy tank with hard, alkaline water, sand, and tankmates chosen to absorb typical haplochromine male aggression.

Conservation

Haplochromis fuelleborni has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List — its status there is "Not Evaluated" (confirmed against the FishBase mirror of Red List Version 2025-2, and by direct search of the Red List under both Haplochromis and Astatotilapia fuelleborni) — and it carries no CITES or CMS listing. There is no evidence of collection pressure on it, simply because it is not collected for the hobby; the relevant pressure is whatever bears on the lake as a whole. It is important not to overstate the case: this species has no formal threat status, and the honest position is that we do not know its population trend.

The lake, however, is plainly under strain, and that is where the real story lies. Lake Rukwa is shallow and endorheic, so its level and area swing dramatically with rainfall — fisheries surveys describe roughly 20–30-year cycles between high stands and low ones, and at low water the lake has historically split into two basins, the northern of which can dry out almost completely. Those swings concentrate salts and can drive harsh, fluctuating salinity and the risk of fish kills in a basin that already runs alkaline and saline. Layered on top are human pressures: an artisanal fishery that has supplied thousands of tons of dried fish, plus catchment-scale change from agriculture, livestock, mining and climate variability that researchers studying the lake's water quality flag as growing concerns. The strongest single indicator is a neighbor: the basin's endemic Rukwa tilapia, Oreochromis rukwaensis, is listed by the IUCN as Vulnerable (VU D2) with a declining population, driven in part by overfishing. A small, range-restricted haplochromine like fuelleborni shares that same fluctuating, fished, increasingly disturbed home — so while its own status is unevaluated, the prudent reading is a species whose fate is tied to a strained lake rather than one that is demonstrably secure.
