Taxonomy & naming
Chiloglanis mbozi was described by Seegers in 1996 and placed in the family Mochokidae, the African squeakers and upside-down catfishes. The genus Chiloglanis is a large radiation of small, sucker-mouthed stream catfishes found across tropical Africa, and the Lake Rukwa drainage in southwestern Tanzania — an isolated Rift Valley basin between Lake Nyasa and Lake Tanganyika — hosts a notable endemic flock of six Chiloglanis species, of which C. mbozi is one.
The species epithet mbozi refers to the Mbozi region of southwestern Tanzania, part of the Rukwa basin where the species occurs. As with many small East African stream catfishes described from limited material, its taxonomy has not required revision since description; the Catalog of Fishes treats Chiloglanis mbozi as the valid combination.
Morphology
Chiloglanis mbozi is a genuinely small catfish, reaching a maximum of only about 2 in total length. Like other members of the genus it has a flattened head and a distinctive sucker-like mouth formed from modified lips and barbels, an adaptation that lets it grip rock surfaces in fast current — the feature behind the group's "suckermouth" nickname among African catfish specialists.
The body is naked and scaleless, a trait shared across Mochokidae, and it carries the family's typical stiff, serrated dorsal and pectoral spines, which can lock erect and cause a painful jab if the fish is handled carelessly or caught in a net. Chiloglanis species are known colloquially as "squeakers" for the stridulatory sound produced by grinding these pectoral spines against the pectoral girdle when disturbed.
Habitat
This species is endemic to the Lake Rukwa drainage, an enclosed Rift Valley basin in southwestern Tanzania that sits at roughly 2,600 feet elevation between Lake Nyasa (Malawi) and Lake Tanganyika. Lake Rukwa itself is alkaline, and the surrounding drainage supports a notable endemic-species hotspot, including a flock of cichlids in the genus Haplochromis alongside the endemic Chiloglanis radiation.
Suckermouth catfishes in this genus are stream and rapids specialists rather than lake-bottom dwellers: closely related Chiloglanis species are documented from fast-flowing, highly oxygenated hilltop and highland streams, gripping rock and cobble substrate against the current. Specific water chemistry data for C. mbozi itself is sparse, but congeneric Chiloglanis in similar habitats are reported from moderately soft to moderately hard, near-neutral water in the roughly 72–81 °F range.
Feeding
Chiloglanis mbozi is presumed to follow the feeding pattern typical of Mochokidae: a nocturnal benthic omnivore and micro-predator that forages the streambed after dark for aquatic invertebrates, detritus and biofilm. The sucker mouth doubles as a grazing tool, letting the fish rasp algae and associated invertebrates from rock surfaces in the current it favours.
No species-specific aquarium feeding data exists for C. mbozi given its rarity in the hobby, but based on the genus and family it would be expected to take sinking pellets, frozen foods and prepared foods offered after lights-out, when a nocturnal species is not out-competed by more active tankmates.
Mating
Detailed courtship behaviour for Chiloglanis mbozi has not been documented. Across the genus, Chiloglanis are oviparous with distinct pairing at spawning time, and males of many species show sexual dimorphism — elongated anal and caudal fins and an enlarged humeral process — though whether this holds for C. mbozi specifically has not been confirmed in the available literature. Data on this species' own reproductive behaviour is sparse.
Breeding
Breeding of Chiloglanis in the aquarium is rare and challenging, and Chiloglanis mbozi has essentially no aquarium breeding record — this is an obscure, wild-collected stream endemic rather than an established hobby fish. Where reproduction is understood in the genus more broadly, eggs are laid over rock or gravel in flowing water with little to no ongoing parental care, but this has not been specifically confirmed for C. mbozi. Prospective keepers should not expect to replicate its highland-stream spawning conditions in a typical home aquarium; treat any reported breeding as unverified.
In the aquarium
Chiloglanis mbozi is not established in the aquarium trade and is essentially unavailable to hobbyists; there is no meaningful supply chain from its narrow endemic range. Given its tiny adult size of about 2 in, it would not need a large tank by catfish standards, but it would demand strong water flow and high oxygenation to replicate the fast hillstream habitat its genus depends on — conditions a standard community aquarium does not provide.
As with all Chiloglanis and other scaleless Mochokidae, the naked skin makes this species sensitive to medications, particularly copper-based treatments, which should be dosed conservatively if ever required. It also carries the genus's locking, serrated dorsal and pectoral spines, which readily snag in an aquarium net and can jab the keeper — move it in a cup or container rather than netting it. Being nocturnal, it would need rock cover and would be most active after dark.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Chiloglanis mbozi as Vulnerable. Its entire known range is the Lake Rukwa drainage of southwestern Tanzania, a single enclosed basin, which makes the species inherently vulnerable to any localised habitat pressure — siltation, water abstraction, or degradation of the fast-flowing streams it depends on could affect the whole population at once.
As an endemic restricted to one drainage system, alongside five other endemic Chiloglanis in the same basin, C. mbozi is a clear example of the narrow-range risk common to Rift Valley stream specialists. It is not part of the aquarium trade, so collection pressure is not a relevant threat; habitat integrity within the Rukwa basin is the determining factor for its future.
