Hard, alkaline, well-buffered water of the kind that defines Lake Edward — stability matters more than chasing a single number.

Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Hybridization watchi

Haplochromis lobatus is a small, lobe-lipped insectivorous cichlid endemic to Lake Edward on the Uganda–DR Congo border, described only in 2020 when it was split off from the long-known Haplochromis labiatus. Its swollen, fleshy lips and slender, pointed snout are tools for sucking insect larvae out of crevices in the lake's rocky and hard-bottomed shores; the IUCN has not yet evaluated it.

Taxonomy & naming

Haplochromis lobatus was described in 2020 by Nick Vranken, Maarten Van Steenberge, Anton Kayenbergh and Jos Snoeks in the Journal of Great Lakes Research, in a paper revising the lobed-lipped cichlids of Lake Edward under the telling subtitle 'two instead of one.' Until then the lake was thought to hold a single thick-lipped haplochromine, Haplochromis labiatus (Trewavas, 1933). Examining 112 lobed-lipped specimens, the authors found that the material actually comprised two sympatric forms — one blunt-snouted with broad, retrognathous jaws (true Haplochromis labiatus) and one with a slender, acute snout and prognathous jaws — and they erected the latter as Haplochromis lobatus. The holotype is a 4 in SL female (MRAC 2016.35.P.0063) collected at the mouth of the Kazinga Channel in Lake Edward in October 2016, with paratypes from Rwenshama, the islands near Katwe, and the Kayanja offshore grounds; types are held at the Royal Museum for Central Africa (Tervuren) and the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences. The genus name is retained here as Haplochromis, the convention this atlas follows, although the Lake Victoria–Edward–Kivu radiation (the 'Lake Victoria Region Superflock') is a notoriously unsettled assemblage and various authors have parcelled its members into Paralabidochromis and other genera; the lobed-lipped species have historically carried a 'Paralabidochromis' morphology. The describers note that the relationships among the lobed-lipped cichlids of Lakes Edward, Kivu and Victoria remain unresolved, and that morphological resemblance has repeatedly proven a poor guide to evolutionary history within this flock.

Morphology

Haplochromis lobatus is a small cichlid, reaching about 5 in in standard length. The body is deep, with a head profile that runs concave to straight and a snout that is elongated, very slender and acute, inclined at roughly 30–45°. The defining feature is the mouth: the lips are lobed, their middle portions usually enlarged, and the oral mucosa is strongly thickened — the trait that gives the species its name. The jaws are iso- to strongly prognathous (the lower jaw projecting, so that its inner teeth are sometimes visible from above when the mouth is closed), the gape is small, and the outer teeth are large, stout, mostly unicuspid and deeply embedded in the fleshy mucosa, with four to eight procumbent teeth at the front of the lower jaw. Counts run to 15–16 dorsal spines, 8–10 dorsal soft rays, three anal spines and 29–30 vertebrae. Dominant males are green to cream-yellow on the body with a turquoise snout and lower jaw, blackish pelvic fins, a dusky-to-black dorsal and anal fin with orange-red markings, and an orange-red to bright red caudal fin; the anal fin carries four to seven small orange, black-bordered eggspots. Females and juveniles are beige to yellow with a blue-green sheen along the back, white below, and far more subdued finnage. Both sexes show four to six very faint dusky vertical bars on the flanks. The species is most easily confused with its lake-mate Haplochromis labiatus, from which it differs by its slender, acute (rather than blunt and broad) snout and its narrower, more prognathous lower jaw; it resembles Haplochromis chilotes of Lake Victoria in snout shape and lobed lips but has notably larger eyes.

Habitat

Haplochromis lobatus is known only from Lake Edward, the shallow rift-valley lake straddling the border of Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo within the Greater Virunga landscape. Within the lake it was collected along rocky shores (Rwenshama, the islands near Katwe) and on hard substrates near the mouth of the Kazinga Channel, as well as on offshore grounds off Kayanja, suggesting an association with firm and rocky bottoms where its prey shelters. The collection sites span both the Ugandan and Congolese shores. FishBase classes the species as benthopelagic in a tropical freshwater setting. No depth range is published specifically for Haplochromis lobatus; the types come from inshore rocky margins and shallow offshore grounds, and as a guide the cichlid-bearing littoral and sub-littoral of Lake Edward lies within roughly the upper 0–66 ft, above the lake's deeper oxygen-poor water. Lake Edward itself is a moderately mineralised, alkaline rift lake: surface waters are warm (about 73–81 °F) and run alkaline, with pH commonly around 8.5–9.0 in the open lake (basin-wide surveys that include inflowing rivers record a far wider envelope). These are the warm, hard, alkaline conditions typical of the Albertine Rift lakes rather than the soft blackwater of the Congo basin proper.

Feeding

Haplochromis lobatus is an insectivore. Gut-content analysis by the describers found mainly the larvae of midges (Chironomidae), mayflies (Ephemeroptera) and caddisflies (Trichoptera), with ostracods, a water mite (Hydrachnidia) and, in one specimen, a few skeletal fragments of a small fish also recorded — a diet overwhelmingly of aquatic insect larvae. FishBase places its trophic level near 3.4. The slender, acute snout and lobed, fleshy lips are interpreted as a suction-feeding apparatus: the lips help form a seal against hard substrates so the fish can draw insect larvae out of crevices and interstices between stones, the same mechanism documented in the morphologically similar Haplochromis chilotes of Lake Victoria. Its strongly prognathous lower jaw is thought to let it reach into corners and gaps between vertical and horizontal surfaces — for instance at the bases of papyrus stems — whereas its lake-mate Haplochromis labiatus, with broader and retrognathous jaws, is presumed to take larvae from flatter surfaces. Both lobe-lipped species live side by side in Lake Edward and were frequently caught in the same nets; despite their shared insect diet, their contrasting jaw architecture is read as a partition of feeding behaviour and microhabitat that lets them coexist without direct competition.

Mating

No courtship or social behaviour has been described for Haplochromis lobatus specifically — the species is known almost entirely from preserved museum material gathered for the taxonomic revision. Like the rest of the Lake Victoria–Edward haplochromine flock, it is a maternal mouthbrooder, and the orange, black-rimmed eggspots carried on the anal fin of dominant males are the lure-like signals these fish use during spawning: the male displays the spots to a female, who snaps at them as she takes up her own newly laid eggs, helping ensure the clutch is fertilised inside or at the male's vent. Dominant males develop the brightest colouration (green-and-yellow bodies, red caudal fins, dark anal fins with orange extensions), consistent with the territorial, lek-style courtship typical of the group, but the details of pair formation, male display sites and territory size in this species remain undocumented in the wild.

Breeding

Breeding has not been observed in Haplochromis lobatus, and no clutch counts, brooding observations or fry-development data exist for it. Its reproductive biology is inferred from the broader haplochromine flock of Lakes Victoria and Edward, whose members are without known exception female (maternal) mouthbrooders: the female takes the fertilised eggs into her mouth and incubates them there through hatching and the early free-swimming stage, releasing the fry once they can fend for themselves and offering them no further care of the biparental, substrate-guarding kind seen in many other cichlids. Clutch sizes in these small Victoria-region haplochromines are typically modest — on the order of a few dozen eggs (very roughly 20–60) — in keeping with the trade-off between fecundity and the protection mouthbrooding affords. The presence of well-formed eggspots on mature males of Haplochromis lobatus is consistent with this reproductive mode. Specific spawning triggers, incubation period and brood size for this species are simply not yet recorded.

In the aquarium

Haplochromis lobatus is essentially unknown in the aquarium hobby. It was described only in 2020 from museum specimens, has no FishBase aquarium-maintenance record, and is not part of the small set of Lake Edward or Victoria-region haplochromines that reach hobbyists. There is no established trade in the species and no body of keeping experience to draw on, so any husbandry guidance here is extrapolated from its biology rather than reported from tanks.

If it were ever maintained, it would call for conditions matching warm, hard, alkaline rift-lake water: roughly 73–81 °F, a high pH (around 8.5–9.0) and moderate-to-high mineral content, never the soft acidic water suited to West African or South American cichlids. A modest footprint would suffice for so small a fish, but a specialised insectivore that suction-feeds from rock would need a rocky, hard-bottomed aquascape with crevices, plenty of small live and frozen invertebrate foods (bloodworm, mayfly and caddis larvae, daphnia), and — as with all haplochromines — a sex ratio of several females per male to spread male aggression during the lek-style spawning. Because it lives sympatrically with its near-twin Haplochromis labiatus and the two are separable only on jaw and snout details, any wild-sourced 'lobe-lipped Edward haplochromine' would carry a real risk of misidentification. In practice this is a fish of museum drawers and field nets, not of the hobby.

Conservation

Haplochromis lobatus has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List (status Not Evaluated as of the 2025-2 version), which is unsurprising for a species described only in 2020 and not yet separated in conservation assessments from Haplochromis labiatus. It is, on current knowledge, endemic to a single lake, and narrow-range endemism is itself a vulnerability. Lake Edward differs in one crucial respect from notorious Lake Victoria next door: it was never stocked with the predatory Nile perch (Lates niloticus), and so its endemic haplochromine flock has not suffered the catastrophic collapse that the perch and eutrophication inflicted on Victoria's cichlids. That said, Lake Edward's fishery is heavily exploited, and the lake faces pressures from shoreline human activity, sedimentation and water-quality decline documented in basin surveys on the Congolese side, set against the backdrop of the wider Greater Virunga conservation landscape. As a recently recognised species with essentially no population data, Haplochromis lobatus is best regarded as Data Deficient in practice until a formal assessment is made.
