Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Haplochromis pharyngalis is a small, rarely-seen haplochromine cichlid endemic to the Lake Edward system of the Albertine Rift, shared between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda. It belongs to the lake's largely understudied species flock and is notable as one of a handful of forms that develop an enlarged pharyngeal mill with molar-like teeth — the hallmark of a snail-crusher. The IUCN lists it as Least Concern (assessed 2021).

Taxonomy & naming

Haplochromis pharyngalis was described by the Belgian ichthyologists Max Poll and Paul Damas in 1939 from the Lake Edward basin, the type series (three syntypes, MRAC 65724-26) having been collected at Bugazia on the Congolese shore of the lake. The species name is a reference to its most conspicuous internal feature, the enlarged pharyngeal apparatus. Within the haplochromine radiation it sits in the catch-all genus Haplochromis; like nearly all members of the East African flock it has at various times been shuffled toward other genera — Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes flags it as 'possibly valid as Thoracochromis pharyngalis' — but no such recombination has been formally adopted, and the conservative usage Haplochromis pharyngalis remains current. The most significant recent taxonomic act was a synonymy: Vranken, Van Steenberge, Balagizi and Snoeks (2020), working from 51 morphometric measurements across 48 specimens, showed that Haplochromis petronius Greenwood, 1967 — long treated as a separate species distinguished by its throat-jaw structure — falls within the range of variation of Haplochromis pharyngalis. The supposed difference turned out to be a geographic morphocline rather than a species boundary, so Haplochromis petronius is now a junior synonym. The Lake Edward haplochromines as a whole are only now receiving modern revision; a wave of recent work (Vranken and colleagues on the piscivorous, lobed-lipped and deepwater pelagic guilds) has been adding and re-sorting species, and the flock's internal classification should be considered unsettled.

Morphology

This is a small cichlid: FishBase records a maximum of about 4 in standard length, and most specimens are smaller. The body is the generalised, moderately deep haplochromine shape, with a meristic count of 15-17 dorsal spines, 7-10 dorsal soft rays, three anal spines and 7-9 anal soft rays over 28-31 vertebrae. The diagnostic combination given in the modern redescription is a rounded caudal fin; very small, round, deeply embedded chest scales; 7-11 pectoral-to-pelvic scales; small nape scales; and dominant males that show a white-blue first ray on the pelvic fins. From its closest look-alike, Haplochromis fuscus, it is separated by an acute rather than blunt snout set at a shallower inclination (40-45 degrees versus 45-60 degrees), rounded versus near-square dental arcades, and fewer rows of inner oral teeth. The feature that gives the fish its name is internal and not present in every individual: some Lake Edward specimens develop a strongly enlarged lower pharyngeal jaw armed with rounded, molar-like (molariform) teeth, the apparatus shared with the lake's other snail-crushers (Haplochromis mylodon, Haplochromis concilians, Haplochromis placodus and Haplochromis malacophagus). Haplochromis pharyngalis is told from those by its recurved rather than straight outer oral teeth and, in life and preservative, by colour: dominant males have green-yellow flanks with only faint nostril and interorbital stripes, rather than the blue flanks and bold head stripes of Haplochromis mylodon and Haplochromis concilians. Sexual dichromatism is the rule for the flock — territorial males carry the bright nuptial colours while females and non-territorial males are a drabber silvery-brown — and the pelvic-fin colour and flank hue noted above are male traits.

Habitat

Haplochromis pharyngalis is endemic to the Lake Edward system, which spans the border of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda in the Albertine (western) arm of the East African Rift. Its range covers Lake Edward itself, the Kazinga Channel that links it to Lake George, and Lake George; within Lake George it is reported as rare outside Kashaka Bay. The whole system drains north via the Semliki to Lake Albert and ultimately the Nile, and in the Freshwater Ecoregions of the World scheme it falls within the Lake Victoria Basin ecoregion that gathers the Victoria, Edward, George and Kyoga lakes and their distinctive Albertine cichlid fauna. The species is benthopelagic — it lives in and just above the bottom rather than at the surface or in open water. In-situ water chemistry specific to this fish has not been published, but Lake Edward is a moderately productive, alkaline rift lake: surveys of the basin record wide spatial variation, with surface waters of the main lake running hard and alkaline (pH on the order of 8.5-9.4, conductivity in the high hundreds to roughly 1,000 microsiemens per centimetre) and warm tropical temperatures around 24-28 degrees Celsius. Depth preferences for this particular species have not been documented; it is a shallow-to-moderate-depth inhabitant of a relatively shallow lake (Lake Edward's maximum depth is about 384 ft), and most haplochromine collecting in the system has been in near-shore and shelf waters.

Feeding

The trophic placement of Haplochromis pharyngalis is genuinely mixed, and the data behind it are thin. Early stomach examinations of a small number of specimens found both larval and emergent insects, marking it as at least partly insectivorous, and FishBase assigns it a trophic level near 3.2. The modern redescription draws a geographic distinction that maps onto the pharyngeal-jaw morphocline: specimens from Lake George are insectivorous, while those from Lake Edward are both insectivorous and molluscivorous. The molluscivory is mechanical — the enlarged pharyngeal mill with its molariform teeth is a snail-crushing device, used to grind the shells of gastropods and bivalves taken from the bottom. This kind of within-species variation in the crushing apparatus, tracking which prey is locally available, is a recurring theme among haplochromines and is exactly the signal Vranken and colleagues used to fold Haplochromis petronius into this species. In the wider Lake Edward community the fish is a benthic forager occupying the snail-and-insect feeding guild rather than the better-known algae-scraping or fish-eating niches of the flock.

Mating

No courtship study exists for Haplochromis pharyngalis specifically, so its mating behaviour must be read from the well-documented biology of the East African haplochromine flock to which it belongs. These cichlids are polygynous maternal mouthbrooders with no pair bond: a sexually active male takes up and defends a small territory, advertises with his nuptial colours — here the green-yellow flanks and white-blue pelvic ray of the dominant male — and courts any ripe female that approaches, while females and subordinate males move through in loose aggregations. Spawning is brief; after it the female departs to brood alone and the male resumes display for the next female. The bright, sex-specific male colouration and the marked difference in appearance between territorial males and the drab females are the visible expression of this system. Because the species is small and not kept in aquaria, none of the finer details — lek structure, the role of egg-spots, female choice — have been observed for it directly.

Breeding

Breeding follows the haplochromine norm: Haplochromis pharyngalis is a maternal (female) mouthbrooder, as FishBase records for the species. After a quick substrate spawning the female takes the fertilised eggs into her mouth and incubates them there through hatching and the early free-swimming stage, releasing fully-formed fry and giving no further parental care once they are independent — the male contributes nothing beyond fertilisation. Clutch size, incubation period and fry development have not been published for this fish; for comparison, similarly-sized Lake Edward and Lake Victoria haplochromines typically produce small broods on the order of a few dozen eggs (roughly 20-60), the trade-off these mouthbrooders make for the safety of oral incubation. No spawning seasonality or environmental trigger has been documented for the species. The flock-typical pattern of repeated, low-fecundity mouthbrooding by females is the safest characterisation that the evidence supports.

In the aquarium

Haplochromis pharyngalis is essentially never kept in the aquarium hobby. It is a small, soberly-coloured endemic of a remote and politically difficult region — Lake Edward straddles the conflict-affected eastern DRC and Virunga National Park — and it has no ornamental trade, no established captive population, and no body of hobbyist husbandry to draw on. The occasional photograph that circulates traces back to scientific collecting rather than the trade. Any keeping advice can therefore only be inferred from its biology and from experience with related Victoria-region haplochromines, which are maintained by a small group of specialists and conservation-minded aquarists. Such a fish would need hard, alkaline water (pH around 8.0-9.0) at roughly 24-27 degrees Celsius, matching its rift-lake origins, a sand bottom over which it could forage, and a tank organised around the haplochromine social structure — one male to several females in a group large enough to spread his attention, since lone females are harassed. As a part-time snail-crusher it would benefit from hard-shelled foods. The honest summary is that this is a fish of scientific rather than aquarium interest; readers wanting a comparable but available cichlid are better served by the more frequently kept Lake Victoria and Lake Kyoga Haplochromis maintained in conservation programmes.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Haplochromis pharyngalis as Least Concern, assessed on 7 September 2021 (published 2022) by V. Natugonza and L. Musinguzi of Uganda's National Fisheries Resources Research Institute, with the population trend listed as unknown. The Least Concern rating reflects that the species is distributed across the whole Lake Edward-George-Kazinga system rather than confined to a single point, and that this system has not suffered the catastrophic, Nile-perch-driven collapse of haplochromine diversity seen in neighbouring Lake Victoria. It carries no CITES or CMS listing. That relatively comfortable status should be read against real basin-scale pressures: the Lake Edward catchment faces heavy fishing, shoreline population growth, agricultural run-off, oil-exploration interest along the Albertine Rift, and the broader instability of the eastern Congo, all of which make sustained monitoring difficult. The deeper conservation problem is simply knowledge — the Lake Edward cichlid flock has been so little studied that many of its species, this one included, are known from only small samples, and ongoing taxonomic revision keeps redrawing the boundaries between them.
