Taxonomy & naming
Haplochromis retrodens was described by the German zoologist Franz Martin Hilgendorf in 1888, in his paper on fishes from the 'Victoria-Nyanza (Ukerewe-See)' collected by the late Dr. G. A. Fischer. Hilgendorf placed it tentatively in Paratilapia (as 'Paratilapia? retrodens'), the catch-all genus then used for many African cichlids. The type locality is the Ukerewe (Mwanza) region of southern Lake Victoria — Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes pins it to Kagehi (Kageyi), east of Kayenze on the lake's southern shore in the Mwanza district of Tanzania. The holotype, specimen ZMB 12742 in the Berlin museum, is the unique type; long thought lost, it was rediscovered by Lothar Seegers in 1999 and catalogued in 2008. One synonym is recognized: Paratilapia polyodon Boulenger, 1909, described from the Sesse Islands of the Ugandan part of the lake and sunk into retrodens by van Oijen in 1991. The species has a tangled generic history typical of the Lake Victoria flock. Because of its molluscivorous specialization it was for many years assigned to the genus Hoplotilapia, and Seegers treated it as Haplochromis (Hoplotilapia) retrodens. Most modern workers fold that and the other Victoria 'satellite' genera back into a broadly defined Haplochromis — the convention this atlas follows, keeping the species under the Haplochromis heading while noting the Hoplotilapia history. Haplochromis itself was erected by Hilgendorf in the same 1888 work, with Haplochromis obliquidens as its type species.
Morphology
Haplochromis retrodens is a modestly sized haplochromine, reaching about 5.5 in in standard length (FishBase, after van Oijen 1991). In overall build it is a typical deep-bodied, laterally compressed Lake Victoria cichlid with a moderately steep head profile. Its defining feature is its dentition: the species name retrodens — Latin retro, 'back', plus dens, 'tooth' — alludes (in the words of the ETYFish Project) to strongly recurved teeth on the outer row of both jaws, the equipment of a fish built to grip and crush hard-shelled prey. The robust, molariform pharyngeal apparatus that goes with a snail-and-clam diet is exactly what led earlier authors to file the species under the molluscivore genus Hoplotilapia. As in nearly all haplochromines, the species is sexually dimorphic in colour: breeding males develop the bright, species-specific nuptial livery used in courtship, while females and non-breeding fish are a duller, cryptic silvery-brown — an aquarium specimen photographed for the Cichlid Room Companion was a piebald individual, an aberrant blotched colour form. Detailed counts, coloration and morphometric diagnostics for this particular species are thin in the public literature, a common situation for the many Victoria haplochromines that were described briefly in the nineteenth century and never fully redescribed before the flock collapsed.
Habitat
The species is endemic to Lake Victoria, the vast, shallow equatorial lake shared by Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya, and lies within the Lake Victoria Basin freshwater ecoregion. Within the lake it is a fish of the littoral and sub-littoral zones, occurring especially where the bottom is hard and where submerged vegetation is present (van Oijen 1991, via FishBase). FishBase records a depth range of roughly 13–20 ft, placing it in the well-lit shallow shelf rather than the open or deep water. Lake Victoria's surface waters are warm and alkaline; this species' documented thermal range is about 75–81 °F, and the lake generally runs at a pH well into the alkaline (commonly around 7.2 to 9.0 across the basin), with the soft-to-moderate mineral content typical of the surrounding catchment. Before the ecological upheavals of the late twentieth century, Haplochromis retrodens was described as widespread across the lake; the Cichlid Room Companion notes it was 'largely widespread throughout the entire Lake Victoria before the Nile perch upsurge.'
Feeding
Haplochromis retrodens is a molluscivore — a member of the snail- and clam-eating trophic guild that is one of about fifteen (sub)trophic groups into which Witte and van Oijen sorted the Lake Victoria haplochromine flock. Its diet is dominated by mollusks, particularly bivalves (Lamellibranchiata); insects (notably mayfly, caddisfly and chironomid-midge larvae), together with crustaceans and water mites (Hydracarina), are taken less frequently as secondary items. FishBase places it at a trophic level of about 3.3. The recurved outer teeth and the heavy pharyngeal mill that give the species its name are the tools of this hard-prey specialization, letting it grip mollusks and crush shells. Its preference for hard, vegetated substrate matches the habitat where snails and bivalves are most abundant. Within the pre-collapse community it was one of many co-existing haplochromines, each partitioning the lake's food resources — the trophic diversification that made the Victoria flock a textbook example of explosive adaptive radiation.
Mating
Like the Lake Victoria haplochromines generally, Haplochromis retrodens is a maternal mouthbrooder with the social system that mode implies: males, not females, hold the reproductive initiative. Reproductive males develop bright species-specific nuptial coloration and court females, which choose mates partly on that visual signal — colour-based mate choice among the Victoria haplochromines is the engine generally credited with driving the rapid speciation of the flock, and its breakdown in turbid, eutrophic water is one of the mechanisms implicated in the lake's loss of diversity. Specific courtship and territorial behaviour for retrodens itself has not been documented in the public literature; the account here is the well-established genus-typical pattern rather than direct observation of this species.
Breeding
Haplochromis retrodens is a maternal (female) mouthbrooder: FishBase records simply that 'females are mouthbrooders,' the reproductive mode shared across the Lake Victoria haplochromine flock. After spawning, the female takes the fertilized eggs into her mouth and broods them through hatching and the early free-swimming stage, releasing the fry to forage and gathering them back into the buccal cavity when threatened — a parental strategy that trades large clutch size for the survival of a small, well-protected brood. No clutch count has been published specifically for retrodens; Lake Victoria haplochromines of its size typically carry broods on the order of a few dozen eggs (commonly ~20–60), so any figure for this species should be read as genus-typical rather than measured. Parental care is by the female alone and ends once the fry are released and weaned; the male provides no care beyond fertilization. Detailed spawning triggers, egg development times and larval data for this species have not been documented.
In the aquarium
Haplochromis retrodens is essentially absent from the aquarium hobby. Unlike a handful of charismatic, brightly coloured Lake Victoria haplochromines that have been maintained in conservation-minded breeding programs, retrodens is a specialized molluscivore with no established presence in the trade; the only well-known aquarium record is a single piebald specimen photographed for the Cichlid Room Companion. There is therefore no body of husbandry experience to draw on, and this section can only generalize from what works for Victoria haplochromines as a group. Were the species kept, it would need hard, alkaline water (pH roughly 7.5–8.5) at about 75–81 °F, a roomy tank with a hard substrate, rockwork and open swimming space, and a diet built around the snails, mussels and hard invertebrate foods its crushing dentition is adapted to. The usual cautions for the group apply: males are colourful but aggressive in breeding condition, mixing similar Victoria haplochromines risks hybridization, and these are fish best left to experienced keepers or formal conservation projects rather than the general hobby. In honesty, this is a fish to read about rather than to keep.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Haplochromis retrodens as Vulnerable (VU, criterion D2), in an assessment dated 1 April 2010 by Witte, de Zeeuw and Brooks; the population trend is listed as unknown. It carries no CITES or CMS listing. The conservation story behind that status is the catastrophe that overtook the entire Lake Victoria cichlid flock in the late twentieth century. The lake once held an estimated 300-plus endemic haplochromine species, an explosive radiation unmatched among vertebrates; from the 1980s the upsurge of the introduced Nile perch (Lates niloticus), compounded by eutrophication, rising turbidity (which erodes the colour-based mate choice that keeps species distinct) and intensive fishing, drove many of these endemics to collapse and a large number to apparent extinction. Haplochromis retrodens was among the species hit hard: the Cichlid Room Companion records that it was widespread across the lake before the Nile perch boom but 'seems to be almost extinct today,' and Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes goes further, flagging the species' status as 'extinct.' The honest position is that the species is at best severely depleted and may already be gone — the 2010 Vulnerable listing and the catalog's 'extinct' note bracket the genuine uncertainty about whether any population survives.
