Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Haplochromis rex is a sand-dwelling, fish-eating cichlid endemic to Lake Edward, the smallest of the African Great Lakes on the Uganda–DR Congo border. Described only in 2022, its name — Latin for 'king' — marks it as the most extreme of the lake's dozen piscivorous haplochromines: tiny-eyed, deep-cheeked, and armed with a few oversized, dagger-like teeth for seizing large prey. It is Not Evaluated by the IUCN, and like all the lake's endemic cichlids it lives in the shadow of heavy fishing pressure and a degrading basin.

Taxonomy & naming

Haplochromis rex was described in 2022 by Nathan Vranken, Maarten Van Steenberge, Anna Heylen, Eva Decru and Jos Snoeks in the monograph 'From a pair to a dozen: the piscivorous species of Haplochromis (Cichlidae) from the Lake Edward system' (European Journal of Taxonomy 815: 1–94). The holotype is an adult male of 6 in standard length collected from Lake Edward off the Rwenshama landing site, Uganda (0°24′16″ S, 29°46′25″ E) on 24 January 2018, deposited in the Royal Museum for Central Africa at Tervuren as MRAC 2018.008.P.0345, with paratypes split between the same museum and the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences. The study was a landmark for the lake: before it, only two fish-eating cichlids were recognised from Lake Edward (and some authors thought there was only one). By comparing the live colours of dominant males alongside subtle differences in body shape and dentition, Vranken and colleagues resolved twelve distinct piscivorous species, of which Haplochromis rex was one of ten described as new. The genus assignment follows the conservative convention applied to the Lake Victoria–Edward 'superflock': these mouthbrooding haplochromines are kept in the catch-all genus Haplochromis pending a comprehensive revision, even though many have at times been split into smaller genera such as Paralabidochromis. The species is monotypic in concept — a member of the explosively young Lake Edward radiation rather than a long-isolated lineage — and so recent that the authors note standard DNA-barcoding methods cannot reliably separate it from its congeners; the species had to be diagnosed morphologically and by male colour.

Morphology

Haplochromis rex is a modest-sized cichlid: the largest known specimen is 6 in (about 6 in) standard length, the male holotype. The body carries the textbook signature of a specialised predator. The head is narrow (head width 36.8–41.6% of head length) with deep cheeks (27.6–33.5% of head length) and a notably small eye (22.2–28.3% of head length) — the reduced eye and deep cheek being the features the describers singled out when they chose the name 'king'. The oral jaws are stout and bear few but large, acute teeth: just 24–36 teeth in the outer row of the upper jaw, far fewer than the 39–79 of several congeners, a dentition built to seize and hold large prey rather than to nip. Meristics run to 14–16 dorsal spines, 9–11 dorsal soft rays, three anal spines with 8–10 soft rays, and 29–31 vertebrae; the caudal fin is emarginate and the caudal peduncle comparatively short. The most diagnostic character is the colour of breeding males, which is how the authors separated species that museum specimens had blurred together: dominant male Haplochromis rex are cream-coloured with an orange operculum (gill cover), an orange dorsal head and interorbital region, and a light blue snout, with orange-red anal and caudal fins and one to three small orange egg-spots ringed in dusky pigment on the anal fin. Females and non-dominant fish are far plainer — yellowish to greyish with brown dorsum, a well-defined vertical preopercular stripe and slender facial stripes. Sexual dimorphism is therefore pronounced in life: males develop the bright cream-and-orange nuptial dress and a black chest, while females stay cryptically coloured, a difference that fades almost entirely in preserved specimens.

Habitat

The species is endemic to Lake Edward, known from no other water body. Lake Edward is the smallest of the African Great Lakes, a roughly 2,202 mi² rift-valley lake straddling the border between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, hemmed by the Virunga and Queen Elizabeth national parks. It is shallow by Great-Lake standards — average depth around 56 ft, maximum roughly 367–384 ft — and connects through the Kazinga Channel to small, highly productive Lake George. Within this lake, Haplochromis rex is a creature of the open sand: the type series was collected over sandy substrates in the littoral zone, and the species is associated with these soft bottoms rather than with rocks or vegetation. Lake Edward is a warm, alkaline, productive tropical lake typical of the Albertine Rift; surface waters run alkaline (around pH 8–9) and warm year-round, the regional air temperature cycling between about 15 and 70 °F while the lake surface stays warmer. The describers did not publish in-situ chemistry for the collection sites, so the figures given here are lake-scale values for a sand-dwelling littoral fish; precise depth and water data specific to Haplochromis rex remain undocumented.

Feeding

Haplochromis rex has not been observed feeding in the wild, and no gut-content study exists for it. Its trophic role is inferred — strongly — from anatomy. Everything about the head is built for piscivory: a streamlined narrow skull, a small eye set in a deep cheek, and stout jaws carrying only two to three dozen large, sharply pointed teeth. The describers judged it to have the most specialised piscivorous morphology of any predator in the Lake Edward system, optimised for taking large prey, and accordingly treat it as 'most probably a piscivorous species'. Within Vranken et al.'s analysis the lake's piscivores split into two functional camps — species with many small teeth versus species with few large ones — that the authors suspect hunt differently; Haplochromis rex sits firmly at the few-large-teeth extreme, the implication being a fish that ambushes and grips sizeable prey rather than picking at small or evasive food. In the broader food web it is one of an estimated dozen fish-eating haplochromines partitioning the predator niche in a lake whose cichlid fauna is some 92% endemic — a textbook case of the trophic diversification that makes the East African Great Lakes a model for the study of rapid evolution.

Mating

No courtship or mating behaviour has been documented for Haplochromis rex specifically; it has never been studied in life beyond the collection of specimens, and it is not known in the aquarium hobby. What can be said comes from the biology shared across the Lake Victoria–Edward haplochromine flock, to which it belongs. These are maternal mouthbrooders with strong sexual dichromatism, and in such species it is the bright nuptial colour of the dominant male — here the cream body, orange operculum and blue snout — that does the work of attracting females and of signalling species identity to keep the closely related, sympatric predators reproductively separate. The egg-spots on the male's anal fin are part of the standard haplochromine spawning ritual, used during the cichlid 'T-position' courtship to draw the female's attention as she collects the eggs. Males of these flock species typically establish and defend a small territory or display site and court passing females there, but for Haplochromis rex the details — whether it leks over open sand, how territories are spaced, the intensity of male–male aggression — are entirely unrecorded.

Breeding

Breeding has not been observed in Haplochromis rex, and no clutch counts, fry descriptions or spawning observations exist for the species. It is confidently placed, however, as a maternal mouthbrooder: this is the universal reproductive mode of the haplochromine cichlids of Lakes Victoria, Edward and Kivu, and the presence of orange egg-spots on the male's anal fin is the diagnostic badge of that breeding system. By the pattern of its relatives, a ripe female would spawn a relatively small clutch of large, yolk-rich eggs onto the substrate, immediately taking them into her mouth; lured by the male's egg-spots she snaps at them and in doing so collects milt to fertilise the eggs already in her buccal cavity. She alone then broods the developing eggs and larvae in her mouth for roughly three weeks, releasing free-swimming fry that may continue to shelter in her mouth when threatened, with no paternal care. Clutch sizes in comparable Lake Victoria/Edward haplochromines are modest — on the order of tens of eggs, frequently in the ~20–60 range for fish of this size — but no figure has been published for Haplochromis rex itself, and the value should be read as genus-typical rather than measured.

In the aquarium

Haplochromis rex is essentially unknown in the aquarium hobby. It was described only in 2022 from a remote, politically sensitive lake that sees little ornamental collection, it has no established common or trade name, and there is no record of it being kept or bred in captivity. None of the husbandry detail that fills this section for popular cichlids exists for this fish, and it would be dishonest to invent it. What can be offered is informed extrapolation. As a Lake Edward endemic it would require hard, alkaline water (roughly pH 8–9) at warm tropical temperatures, an open sandy floor matching its natural habitat, and — as an obligate predator with a mouth built for large prey — a diet of substantial meaty foods rather than flake. It is a maternal mouthbrooder, so any breeding attempt would follow the familiar haplochromine pattern of a colourful dominant male over a harem of plainer females in a spacious tank. In practice, though, the relevant truth is the simple one: this is a wild, recently described, conservation-relevant fish with no presence in the trade, and it is best regarded as a species to read about rather than to keep.

Conservation

Haplochromis rex has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List (status: Not Evaluated), which is unsurprising for a species formally named only in 2022; it likewise carries no CITES or CMS listing. No species-specific population data exist. Its conservation outlook is therefore read through the state of Lake Edward as a whole, and that picture carries real concern. The lake's cichlid fauna — roughly 60 species, about 92% of them found nowhere else — is exactly the kind of narrow-range endemic assemblage most exposed to disturbance, and a fish known from a single lake has no refuge if that lake declines. Lake Edward faces intensifying pressure: rapid human population growth in the basin, declining fish stocks from heavy fishing, habitat degradation and pollution, and the looming threat of oil exploration in the Albertine Rift. The catastrophic collapse of endemic haplochromines in neighbouring Lake Victoria following the introduction of the Nile perch is the cautionary backdrop against which any introduction of large predators or further habitat loss in Lake Edward must be judged. None of these pressures is documented as a present danger to Haplochromis rex in particular — but as a single-lake endemic predator newly revealed to science, it is precisely the sort of species that can be lost before it is ever properly known.
