Taxonomy & naming
Haplochromis serridens was described by the British ichthyologist Charles Tate Regan in 1925, in the Occasional Papers of the Boston Society of Natural History, from material collected in Lake Edward, Uganda. The holotype (MCZ 31522) is held at the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard, with a single paratype (BMNH 1925.8.7.10, ex MCZ) in the Natural History Museum, London. The species has been treated as valid ever since; van Oijen and colleagues retained it in their 1991 CLOFFA check-list of African freshwater fishes, and Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes lists it as a valid Haplochromis. It sits in the subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae among the East African haplochromines — the explosively speciose 'Haplochromis' assemblage. As with most members of that group, generic placement is unsettled: the Lake Victoria–Edward radiation has historically been parcelled out among many smaller genera (Astatotilapia, Yssichromis, Prognathochromis, and others) erected largely by P.H. Greenwood, few of which are now consistently applied. Modern usage keeps these fishes under the umbrella genus Haplochromis pending a comprehensive revision, and that is the convention followed here. The Lake Edward cichlids were barely studied for most of the twentieth century, and only recent work — led by Nathan Vranken, Jos Snoeks and colleagues at the Royal Museum for Central Africa and KU Leuven — has begun to resolve the flock; serridens itself has not been the subject of a modern redescription.
Morphology
This is a small cichlid: FishBase gives a maximum of about 3 in standard length, typical of the many shallow-water haplochromines of the Lake Edward system rather than the larger predatory members of the flock. No colour photograph of a living fish appears in the public databases, and the museum specimens on which the species rests long ago lost their pigment, so colour in life is essentially undocumented — a recurring problem for the Lake Edward haplochromines, whose males often differ chiefly in breeding colour. The diagnostic feature is in the mouth. Regan's epithet serridens combines Latin serra, 'saw,' with dens, 'tooth,' a reference to the roughly fifty small bicuspid (two-cusped) teeth packed into the outer row of the upper jaw, giving the dentition a serrated, saw-like appearance. A crowded outer row of fine bicuspids of this kind is characteristic of haplochromines that scrape and pick rather than seize large prey, and it sets serridens apart from the fish-eating species of the lake, which carry fewer, larger, more widely spaced teeth. Sexual dimorphism has not been described in detail for this species, but like virtually all haplochromine cichlids it can be presumed present: males of the group are the more colourful sex and typically carry egg-spot (ocellus) markings on the anal fin used in spawning, while females are plainer.
Habitat
Haplochromis serridens is endemic to the Lake Edward system, which straddles the border between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda in the Albertine Rift — the western branch of the East African Rift. The type locality is Lake Edward itself, and the species is recorded only from that lake and its connected waters (which include the smaller, shallower Lake George linked via the Kazinga Channel). In freshwater-ecoregion terms this falls within the Lake Victoria Basin ecoregion (FEOW), a unit defined to include the basins of Lakes Victoria, Edward, George, Kyoga and Kivu and characterised by its endemic cichlid fauna. FishBase classes the fish as freshwater and benthopelagic, occupying the water column near the bottom. Specific in-situ depth, substrate and water-chemistry measurements for serridens have not been published — the IUCN assessment records its habitat simply as inland wetlands and notes insufficient ecological data. Across the Lake Edward system as a whole, surface waters are warm and alkaline; like the other East African rift lakes it is hard and basic, with broadly typical haplochromine conditions of roughly pH 7.2–9.0 and temperatures around 73–81 °F. The dentition points to a fish associated with hard substrates where epilithic algae and invertebrates grow.
Feeding
The trophic ecology of Haplochromis serridens has not been studied directly from gut contents; what is known is inferred from its mouth. A 2024 review of the Lake Edward system by Musinguzi and colleagues, drawing on tooth and jaw morphology, assigns the species to feeding on aufwuchs on rocks — the felt of attached algae, diatoms and the small invertebrates living within it that coats hard surfaces. The crowded outer row of fine bicuspid teeth is the tool of a grazer-and-picker, scraping and combing this layer rather than seizing fish; FishBase's modelled trophic level of about 3.3 is consistent with a diet mixing plant material with small animal prey such as insect larvae and micro-crustaceans. In this it is firmly outside the lake's piscivore guild, the large-toothed fish-eaters that have drawn most recent research attention. Within the community, serridens belongs to the broad band of small invertivore-detritivore haplochromines that process algae and bottom invertebrates and in turn form prey for the larger predatory cichlids and for introduced and native piscivores.
Mating
No courtship or social behaviour has been documented for Haplochromis serridens specifically. It can, however, be placed confidently within the well-known reproductive pattern of the East African haplochromines, to which it belongs. These cichlids are polygynous maternal mouthbrooders: males are the brightly coloured, displaying sex and, in the breeding season, hold small courtship territories or display sites, advertising to females with colour and movement. The egg-spots (ocelli) borne on the male's anal fin function in spawning, drawing the female's attention as she collects her clutch. Females visiting a male are courted, spawn, and then leave to brood alone — there is no pair bond and no paternal care. In the absence of species-level observation, this generalised account, drawn from the broader Lake Victoria–Edward haplochromine literature, is the honest extent of what can be said about pre-spawning behaviour in serridens.
Breeding
Breeding in Haplochromis serridens has not been observed or described in the wild or in captivity. FishBase records the species, like its relatives, as a female mouthbrooder, and that is the one firm reproductive fact available. Across the East African haplochromine radiation the mode is highly conservative: the female takes the fertilised eggs into her mouth and broods them there through hatching and the early free-swimming stage, releasing fry that may dart back into her mouth when threatened. Clutches in small haplochromines of this size are modest — congeners of comparable length typically carry on the order of a few dozen eggs, and the small body size of serridens implies a small clutch, though no count has been published for this species. Parental care is entirely maternal and ends after the brooding and brief post-release guarding period; males contribute nothing beyond fertilisation. Specific spawning triggers, egg numbers and developmental timing for serridens remain undocumented.
In the aquarium
Haplochromis serridens is essentially never kept in the aquarium hobby. It is a small, plainly documented Lake Edward endemic with no established presence in the ornamental trade, no commercial collection, and — because no colour photograph of a living fish is even in circulation — little to recommend it to keepers who pursue the more spectacular Lake Victoria and Lake Malawi haplochromines. There is no body of hobbyist husbandry experience to report. Any general guidance can only be extrapolated from the broader group: were the species ever maintained, it would call for the hard, alkaline water of the rift lakes (roughly pH 7.5–8.5, warm temperatures around 75–81 °F), a rocky aquascape offering grazing surfaces and territorial broken sightlines, and the polygynous stocking ratio of one male to several females used for haplochromine mouthbrooders to spread male aggression. Given its conservation context and absence from the trade, serridens is best regarded as a fish to study and protect in the wild rather than a candidate for the home aquarium.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Haplochromis serridens as Least Concern, in an assessment dated 7 September 2021 by V. Natugonza and L. Musinguzi (population trend unknown). The Least Concern rating reflects that no widespread threat specific to this species has been documented, rather than detailed evidence of a healthy population — the assessment explicitly notes insufficient ecological data. It is not listed under CITES or CMS. The wider picture for the Lake Edward system is more guarded. The lake holds an endemic cichlid flock — on the order of several dozen Haplochromis species, the great majority found nowhere else — whose members are unevenly studied and, for the small algae- and invertebrate-feeders like serridens, poorly monitored. Reviews of the system flag growing artisanal fishing pressure and, above all, the standing risk of a Nile perch (Lates) introduction or invasion of the kind that devastated the haplochromine flock of neighbouring Lake Victoria, where hundreds of endemic cichlids declined or vanished after the perch's mid-twentieth-century upsurge. Lake Edward has so far escaped that fate, and its position partly within the Virunga and Queen Elizabeth National Parks affords some protection, but the lesson of Lake Victoria is the backdrop against which the long-term security of small endemics like serridens should be read.
