Herotilapia multispinosa, the rainbow cichlid, is a small, peaceable Central American cichlid of the lowland lakes and swamps of Nicaragua, Costa Rica and eastern Honduras. Modest in size at around 4–4.5 in and golden-bodied with a broken dark lateral stripe, it owes both its hobby popularity and its scientific name to an oddity of its mouth: unlike almost any of its relatives it carries tricuspid, three-pointed teeth, the dentition of a dedicated algae grazer. For more than a century it has anchored its own monotypic genus, though most recent workers fold it into Archocentrus, and it remains one of the gentlest and easiest substrate-spawning cichlids a beginner can keep.

Taxonomy & naming

The rainbow cichlid was described by the German-born British ichthyologist Albert Günther in 1867 as Heros multispinosus, in the Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London, from a specimen taken in Lake Managua, Nicaragua; the unique holotype (BMNH 1865.7.20.34) is held in the Natural History Museum, London, and Günther figured the fish more fully the following year. In 1904 Jacques Pellegrin erected the genus Herotilapia for it, and there it sat as the sole species — a monotypic genus — for most of the twentieth century. Pellegrin's name is itself a taxonomic statement: it fuses Heros (the South American genus Günther had originally used) with Tilapia (then a catch-all bin for African cichlids), because the fish's curious dentition reminded him of a tilapia even though every other character allied it with the heroine cichlids of the New World. That tension between teeth and everything else has driven its later history. The catalogue of fishes records the species as having been treated as Archocentrus multispinosus by several authors (Burgess 2000; Schmitter-Soto 2007; Matamoros et al. 2009; Angulo et al. 2013), and the molecular and morphological revision of the herichthyine cichlids by McMahan, Matamoros, Piller and Chakrabarty (2015, Zootaxa) likewise places it within the convict-cichlid radiation rather than in a lineage of its own. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes nonetheless retains Herotilapia multispinosa (Günther 1867) as the currently valid combination, following Bussing (1998) and the most recent Costa Rican checklists; in the hobby and much of the literature the two names are used interchangeably. The honest position is that the rainbow cichlid is a small heroine cichlid close to Amatitlania and Archocentrus whose generic label remains unsettled, the tricuspid teeth that once seemed to set it apart now read as a feeding specialization rather than evidence of deep distinctness.

Ad Konings, writing in the Cichlids Yearbook, frames the relationship even more specifically: William Bussing (1976) regarded "Cichlasoma" centrarchus as a sibling species of Herotilapia multispinosa, and Konings groups multispinosa with centrarchus and two Guatemalan relatives — "Cichlasoma" spinosissimum and "Cichlasoma" immaculatum — as a natural, closely related quartet, distinguished from true Cichlasoma chiefly by the tricuspid teeth already noted, though he judges multispinosa the most distant member of the four. The four species also fall into a striking geographic pattern: the Guatemalan pair (spinosissimum and immaculatum) occupies the Río Polochic drainage while the Nicaraguan pair (centrarchus and multispinosa) occupies the great lakes of Nicaragua, with a large, poorly surveyed gap between the two pairs' ranges.

Morphology

The rainbow cichlid is a small, deep-bodied, laterally compressed cichlid. FishBase gives a maximum of about 6.5 in total length, but that is an upper extreme; in practice the fish is much smaller, with field and aquarium standard lengths around 4–4.5 in and males running a few centimetres larger than females. The ground colour is a warm yellow to golden-tan that can flush deep orange or brick-red on a courting or breeding fish, overlaid with iridescent blue-green speckling on the flanks and unpaired fins — the shifting play of colour that gives the species its common name. A dark lateral band runs from behind the eye toward the tail but is typically broken into a row of irregular blotches rather than a continuous stripe, and the intensity of this dark patterning swings dramatically with mood, brightening to near-black bars during disputes and spawning. The single most diagnostic feature is internal: the rainbow cichlid bears tricuspid (three-cusped) teeth, a dentition associated with vegetarian, algae-scraping fishes and almost unique among the Central American cichlids, and the trait that originally earned it its own genus. Sexual dimorphism is modest but real — mature males grow larger, carry more produced, pointed dorsal- and anal-fin tips, and show the most saturated breeding colour, while ripe females are rounder-bodied and often duskier.

Habitat

Herotilapia multispinosa is a lowland fish of the Atlantic and Pacific slopes of Central America, ranging from eastern Honduras south through Nicaragua to northeastern Costa Rica, with the heart of its range in the great Nicaraguan lakes and the San Juan drainage that links them to the Caribbean. FishBase frames it around the San Juan ichthyological province of Nicaragua and Costa Rica; the type locality is Lake Managua. Within that range it is a fish of still and slow water — inland lakes, lagoons, swamps, marshes and weedy ponds — typically over soft, muddy bottoms in warm, often turbid water. It is notably hardy: it tolerates high temperatures and is documented surviving in small, shrinking water bodies through the dry season, an adaptation to the seasonally fluctuating wetlands it inhabits. Recorded conditions reflect the relatively hard, near-neutral-to-alkaline waters of the Nicaraguan lowlands: FishBase lists a pH range of about 7.0-8.0 and a hardness of roughly 9-20 dGH, with a broad tolerated temperature span of about 70–97 °F (biotope records cluster nearer 73–86 °F, pH 6.8-8.0). These are shallow-water fish; documented habitat depth runs from the surface to only a metre or two over the muddy, vegetated bottoms where they feed and breed. The species' resilience has also let it establish outside its native range: a feral population has persisted since 1991 in a thermal spring near Lake Balaton, Hungary.

Feeding

The rainbow cichlid is a low-trophic-level omnivore that leans heavily herbivorous — FishBase places its trophic level near 2.0, about as plant-based as a cichlid gets. In the wild it feeds on considerable amounts of ooze and detritus and on filamentous algae, working over the soft sediment and grazing the algal films and 'green spot' growth that coat stones and submerged surfaces. This is where its tricuspid teeth earn their keep: the three-pointed cusps are well suited to rasping and combing aufwuchs (the carpet of algae and associated micro-invertebrates on hard surfaces), a feeding mode and dentition shared with unrelated algae-grazers but otherwise rare among Central American cichlids. It is not a strict vegetarian, however — like most heroines it readily takes small invertebrates, insect larvae, small crustaceans and the like alongside its algal staple, and it will sift mouthfuls of sediment for edible matter. In its lowland-wetland community it functions as a small grazer-detritivore, converting algal and organic films into fish flesh near the base of the food web.

Mating

Outside of breeding the rainbow cichlid is one of the most peaceable Central American cichlids, living in loose groups and tolerating gentle tankmates with little friction. Reproduction is monogamous: a male and female form a pair bond and together hold a territory. Pairs typically sort themselves out of a group as the fish mature, and it is at this point that the species' otherwise mild temper sharpens — sexually mature males become territorial toward one another in the presence of females, and a settled pair will turn suddenly aggressive in defence of a chosen spawning site, driving off any fish that approaches. Courtship and pair maintenance run on the usual cichlid currency of colour and display: paired fish flush their golden bodies with deep red-orange breeding colour and intensify their dark markings, lip-lock and quiver in front of one another, and jointly clean and guard the surface chosen for the eggs. The shift from sociable shoaling fish to a tightly bonded, territory-defending pair is abrupt and is the main reason keepers are advised to give a breeding pair a tank to itself.

Breeding

Herotilapia multispinosa is a biparental, open-substrate spawner and a famously willing one — its readiness to breed in ordinary aquarium water is a large part of its long popularity. The pair selects and meticulously cleans a flat, exposed surface, usually a horizontal stone or a broad plant leaf, and the female deposits a clutch of roughly 100-300 adhesive eggs over it while the male follows to fertilize. Both parents then guard, with a fairly clear division of labour: the female stays close over the eggs, fanning them with her pectoral fins to keep them oxygenated, while the male patrols and repels intruders and excavates one or more pits in the soft bottom nearby. The eggs hatch in roughly two to three days (about 48-72 hours), and the parents move the wriggling, yolk-sac larvae into the pre-dug pits, shifting them between holes and, in shallow oxygen-poor pools, sometimes attaching them instead to submerged plant roots or to the aquarium glass near the better-oxygenated surface. Once the yolk is absorbed the fry become free-swimming and are led about and defended by both parents as a tight school, fed at first on the smallest live foods. Parental care is genuine and biparental but not unusually prolonged, and rainbow cichlids are generally good, non-cannibalistic parents — though a pair badly disturbed (for instance by constant activity in front of the tank) may occasionally eat a brood, which is why many breeders separate free-swimming fry to rear them on. Reported triggers are mild: clean, warm water and a small temperature rise into the upper 20s °C, with a good, varied diet, are usually enough.

In the aquarium

The rainbow cichlid is widely and rightly recommended as one of the best Central American cichlids for a beginner: it is small, hardy, colourful, easy to breed and, for a cichlid, remarkably peaceful. A pair can be housed in a tank from roughly 30 US gallons (about 30 US gal, a 35.5 in footprint) upward, with more space strongly preferred if the fish are to be kept in a community or as a young group from which a pair will form; biotope guidance suggests a minimum around 50 US gal. Because it is genuinely good-natured outside of breeding, it mixes well with other calm fish of similar size — larger tetras, other peaceful Central Americans, livebearers and robust catfish — in a way few of its relatives manage. The important caveats are behavioural rather than chemical: a pair in breeding condition becomes territorial and will harass tankmates near the nest, and two rival males with females present will quarrel, so a community tank needs room and a spawning pair is best given its own tank.

Water chemistry is undemanding and should mirror the hard, warm, near-neutral-to-alkaline lowland waters of its range: a temperature around 73–86 °F, pH from about 6.8 up to 8.0, and moderate to fairly hard water (roughly 9-20 dGH) all suit it, and it tolerates a wider swing than most. It is not a soft-blackwater fish and does not need acidic conditions. Provide a soft sandy substrate, which the fish will sift and dig — especially when breeding, when both parents excavate pits in the bottom — together with rocks, driftwood and shaded retreats to break up sightlines, and a clear open area at the front for swimming. Hardy and rooted plants generally survive, though wild-caught fish sometimes uproot rosette plants while digging, so potting or weighting plantings is prudent.

Feeding is easy. As a natural algae-grazer the rainbow cichlid needs a diet with a strong vegetable component — spirulina- and algae-based flakes and pellets, blanched vegetables such as spinach, peas, courgette and cucumber — balanced with protein from quality dry foods and live or frozen items (bloodworm, brine shrimp, small crustaceans). A good vegetable share keeps the fish in colour and condition and matches its herbivore-leaning gut. The common mistakes keepers make are few: overstocking a breeding pair into a community where they cannot establish a defensible territory, neglecting the vegetable side of the diet, and assuming this gentlest of cichlids will stay gentle through a spawning — give it space and clean, warm water and it is about as undemanding as a substrate-spawning cichlid gets.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Herotilapia multispinosa as Least Concern, in an assessment by Wilfredo A. Matamoros and Tim Lyons published in 2019 (assessed 17 June 2019). The species is widely distributed across the lowlands of Nicaragua, Costa Rica and eastern Honduras, occurs in a range of still-water habitats, and is a hardy generalist tolerant of warm, turbid and seasonally shrinking waters — all factors that buffer it against decline. It carries no CITES or CMS listing and is harmless to humans. It is taken in artisanal fisheries and is a long-established, commercially farmed aquarium fish, but neither is flagged as a population-level threat. As with the rest of Central America's freshwater fauna, the broader pressures on its habitat are the familiar ones — wetland drainage, agricultural runoff and pollution, water extraction and the introduction of non-native fishes into the Nicaraguan lakes — but none is documented as a present danger to this adaptable and abundant little cichlid. Its own hardiness, demonstrated by the feral population thriving in a Hungarian thermal spring since 1991, underlines how resilient the species is.
