Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Hybridization watchi

Labidochromis ianthinus is a small mbuna endemic to Lake Malawi, described in 1982 by Digby Lewis and known from the Mbenji Islands in the central part of the lake. Its name means 'violet,' a nod to the bluish-purple cast of the fish, and it belongs to the same forceps-toothed genus as the famous 'yellow lab' (Labidochromis caeruleus). A modest, rock-dwelling micro-predator, it is one of several Labidochromis whose ranges centre on a single offshore island group.

Taxonomy & naming

Labidochromis ianthinus was described in 1982 by Digby S. C. Lewis in his revision of the genus Labidochromis, published in the Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society (volume 75, number 3). The genus Labidochromis was established by Ethelwynn Trewavas in 1935 for small Lake Malawi cichlids defined by an unusual feeding apparatus — a narrow, forceps-like set of slender, well-spaced teeth at the jaw front, adapted for plucking small animals out of the algal film on rocks rather than for rasping algae. The genus name joins Greek 'labis' (a pair of forceps) and 'chromis' (an old name for a perch-like fish). The epithet ianthinus is Latin from Greek 'ianthinos,' meaning violet or violet-coloured, chosen for the bluish-purple hue of the living fish. The holotype (BMNH 1981.1.9.49) and paratypes are held at the Natural History Museum in London and other collections; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the type locality simply as Lake Malawi, but the species is consistently associated in the literature and aquarium trade with the Mbenji Islands in the central lake. It belongs to the Cichlidae, subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae, within the endemic mbuna radiation.

Morphology

Labidochromis ianthinus is a small mbuna, reported to reach about 3.5 in in total length (FishBase), placing it among the larger members of an otherwise small-bodied genus. It has the characteristic Labidochromis shape — an elongate, moderately compressed body, a fairly pointed head and the small, narrow mouth bearing the slender, forceps-like teeth that define the genus. The species is named for its colour: living fish, and especially dominant males, take on a violet to bluish-purple cast, overlaid with the darker vertical barring and dark fin markings typical of the genus. As in most mbuna there is clear sexual dichromatism, with brighter, more intensely coloured males carrying ocellated egg-spots on the anal fin and plainer, paler females. Detailed published morphometrics beyond Lewis's original description are sparse, and much of what aquarists report about its colour comes from observation of the Mbenji-form fish in the trade rather than from formal study.

Habitat

The species is endemic to Lake Malawi and, within it, to the rocky habitats around the Mbenji Islands — a small, isolated island group rising from the central part of this huge rift-valley lake shared by Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania. Like its congeners it is a fish of the mbuna zone, the boulder-strewn littoral where most of Malawi's small rock-cichlids live, generally in relatively shallow water within roughly the upper one to twenty metres. FishBase gives a temperature range of about 73–79 °F for the species, consistent with the warm surface water of the lake; the water is also hard and alkaline, with a pH well above neutral and substantial carbonate hardness. The structure it depends on is the rock matrix and its coating of algal 'Aufwuchs,' which both provides cover and harbours the small invertebrates it feeds on. An island-centred distribution like this is characteristic of many Labidochromis, whose populations tend to be isolated reef to reef across the lake.

Feeding

Labidochromis ianthinus is, by the biology of its genus, a micro-predator rather than a dedicated algae-grazer. The forceps-like dentition that defines Labidochromis is built for picking: the slender, well-spaced front teeth let these fish tweeze tiny invertebrates — insect larvae, micro-crustaceans, mites and other meiofauna — out of the algal turf coating the rocks, taking some algae and detritus incidentally in the process. FishBase assigns the species an estimated trophic level of about 2.7, the value expected for a small invertebrate-leaning omnivore. No species-specific gut-content analysis has been published for Labidochromis ianthinus, so its diet is inferred from the consistent feeding mode of the genus and the general ecology of the Malawi rock community, in which Labidochromis fill the niche of small invertebrate-pickers alongside the many herbivorous mbuna.

Mating

As a typical mbuna, Labidochromis ianthinus is a polygynous maternal mouthbrooder, and FishBase explicitly notes that the female is a mouthbrooder. Courtship has not been described in fine detail for the species, but follows the standard haplochromine pattern: a dominant male holds a small territory among the rocks, intensifies in colour — here toward the violet sheen that gives the fish its name — and courts females with quivering displays and circling. Spawning is the classic egg-and-anal-spot sequence in which the female lays a few eggs, takes them into her mouth, and then nips at the male's egg-spotted anal fin, drawing in milt to fertilise the clutch she already holds. There is no pair bond and no paternal care; a single male may spawn with several females. Sexual dimorphism is the usual mbuna arrangement of brighter, egg-spotted males and plainer females.

Breeding

Breeding details specific to Labidochromis ianthinus are not well documented, but can be described confidently from the genus and from Malawi mbuna in general. It is a maternal mouthbrooder: after spawning the female alone incubates the fertilised eggs in her buccal cavity for roughly three weeks, fasting while the eggs hatch and the larvae absorb their yolk, then releases fully formed, free-swimming fry able to feed at once. Clutch sizes in small Labidochromis are modest — generally on the order of ten to thirty eggs, scaling with the small body — and for a short time after release the female may continue to take the fry back into her mouth when threatened. This low-fecundity, high-investment breeding strategy is shared across the rock-dwelling mbuna; exact clutch counts and developmental timings for Labidochromis ianthinus itself remain unrecorded in the literature.

In the aquarium

Labidochromis ianthinus reaches the aquarium hobby occasionally, usually traded under names tied to its Mbenji-island origin and prized for the violet-blue colour of good males, but it is far less common than the ubiquitous yellow lab. Its care is that of a standard small-to-medium mbuna. It requires the hard, alkaline, warm water of its home lake — a pH comfortably above 7.5, moderate-to-high hardness and a temperature around 75–81 °F — kept clean and well filtered, since rift-lake fish need oxygen-rich, stable, low-nitrate conditions.

The tank should be built around generous rockwork and caves over a sand bottom, giving territories and broken sight-lines. As a moderately assertive mbuna, it is best kept with other similarly sized rock-cichlids of comparable temperament; keeping it in a group with enough rock to spread out territorial males helps manage aggression. Diet should follow the genus's invertivore leaning — quality flake or pellet plus small frozen and live invertebrates — rather than the very heavy algae diet sometimes pushed for strictly herbivorous mbuna, which suits these picking-feeders less well. In short, it is an attractive, manageable mbuna with appealing colour, well within reach of an experienced Malawi-tank keeper, but it remains a comparative specialty fish rather than a hobby staple.

Conservation

Labidochromis ianthinus was assessed by the IUCN as Least Concern in 2018. That rating reflects that, although the species has a restricted range centred on the Mbenji Islands, the rocky habitat it occupies is not at present subject to severe localised threat and the fish faces no major fishery pressure beyond incidental aquarium collection. The wider picture for Lake Malawi's rock-dwelling endemics is more guarded: the lake is under growing pressure from catchment deforestation and the siltation it causes, from intensive artisanal fishing, from shoreline development and from the longer-term effects of climate-driven warming and lake-level change. These pressures bear most heavily on narrow-range mbuna whose populations are naturally fragmented island to island, and a species effectively tied to a single offshore island group is intrinsically sensitive to any local degradation of its reefs. Labidochromis ianthinus is therefore not of immediate conservation concern but is a good example of a micro-endemic whose long-term security rests on the overall health of Lake Malawi's rocky littoral.
