Taxonomy & naming
Lethrinops argenteus was described by Ernst Ahl in 1926, in the Sitzungsberichte der Gesellschaft Naturforschender Freunde zu Berlin (page 60). The type material consists of syntypes held in the Zoological Museum in Berlin (ZMB 23479–80), and the type locality is given as near Langenburg, an early German colonial station at the northern end of Lake Nyasa (Lake Malawi), on what is today the northeastern, Tanzanian shore. Catalog of Fishes lists the species as valid as Lethrinops argenteus Ahl 1926, and it has been carried as valid through the major treatments of the genus, including Eccles and Lewis (1978, as 'argentea'), Eccles and Trewavas (1989), Maréchal's CLOFFA account (1991) and Konings (2016). The genus Lethrinops was raised by Charles Tate Regan in 1922 for sediment-sifting Lake Malawi cichlids defined by the 'Lethrinops-type' lower-jaw dental arcade, in which the outer tooth row curves smoothly inward to terminate just behind the inner rows. Eccles and Trewavas (1989) later split off the genera Tramitichromis and Taeniolethrinops, leaving Lethrinops characterised mainly by that shared dental trait. As a long-recognised member of the shallow-water sand-dwelling assemblage, argenteus belongs to the group later treated by Ngatunga and Snoeks. The species has no settled English common name, so none is asserted here.
Morphology
Lethrinops argenteus is an elongate, laterally compressed cichlid of the typical sand-sifting build, with the protrusible jaws and pointed head suited to probing soft substrate. FishBase lists a maximum size of about 7.5 in total length, making it one of the larger members of the genus. The epithet argenteus, Latin for 'silvery', was coined by Ahl from the plain, reflective coloration of the preserved type material — the washed-out, silvery appearance shared by most sand-dwelling Lethrinops outside the breeding season, when females and non-breeding males are countershaded and unremarkable. As in the rest of the genus, the most conspicuous sexual dimorphism is the nuptial dress of mature breeding males, which develop brighter colours and prolonged finnage on the open sand; detailed live-colour notes specific to argenteus are limited in the literature, and a single archival photograph is held by FishBase. The diagnostic separation of argenteus from its many congeners rests on meristic and morphometric characters described in the genus revisions rather than on any single striking external feature.
Habitat
The species is endemic to Lake Malawi (Lake Nyasa / Lago Niassa), the rift-valley lake shared by Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania, with its type locality at the far north of the lake near old Langenburg. FishBase characterises it as a freshwater, demersal fish occurring across the tropical band of the lake (roughly 9°S–12°S in the records it carries), and as a member of the sand-dwelling Lethrinops it is a fish of open sandy and intermediate bottoms rather than the rocky mbuna shore. There its sediment-sifting feeding mode can operate over the soft substrate. The surrounding lake water is warm, hard and alkaline: open surface waters run roughly 75–82 °F seasonally with a pH generally between about 7.7 and 8.6 and high mineral content, the chemical envelope this species inhabits.
Feeding
Lethrinops argenteus is a benthic, sand-sifting invertivore, like the rest of its genus. Feeding fish drop the mouth to the substrate, take in a mouthful of sand or mud, tumble it briefly, and eject the cleaned sediment through the mouth and gill openings while retaining buried invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans and similar prey. FishBase places it at an estimated trophic level of about 3.2, consistent with a small-invertebrate predator. This winnowing or sediment-processing strategy is the defining ecological role of the Lethrinops flock and integrates argenteus into the diverse benthic fish community that exploits Lake Malawi's sandy zones. No dedicated dietary study has been published for this particular species, so the account rests on the well-documented feeding biology of the genus.
Mating
As a Lake Malawi haplochromine, Lethrinops argenteus is a polygynous maternal mouthbrooder, and its courtship is expected to follow the lek-style pattern of the sand-dwelling Lethrinops. In that pattern a breeding male establishes and defends a spawning site on the open sandy bottom — in many sand-dwellers worked into a low mound or shallow depression — and displays his nuptial colours to passing females, leading a receptive female onto the site to spawn. Specific courtship observations for argenteus have not been published, so the behaviour described here is inferred from the well-known biology of the genus and the lake's mouthbrooding flock rather than recorded directly for this species.
Breeding
Reproduction follows the maternal-mouthbrooding pattern universal to Lake Malawi's haplochromines. After spawning on the male's site, the female takes the fertilised eggs into her mouth, incubating them and sheltering the larvae until the fry are free-swimming and able to feed and avoid predators on their own; the male provides no care beyond defending the spawning territory during courtship. Specific clutch counts for Lethrinops argenteus are not documented, but sand-dwelling Lethrinops are comparatively modest brooders, typically carrying on the order of a few dozen eggs and fry — the trade-off for the protection mouthbrooding confers. Warming water and good condition are the likely seasonal trigger for spawning, as in most Malawi mouthbrooders. These statements are inferred from the genus rather than recorded for argenteus, which has no published breeding account.
In the aquarium
Lethrinops argenteus is not a fish of the general aquarium trade. FishBase records both a commercial fishery use and a commercial aquarium use, reflecting that it is a food fish in the lakeshore catch and that Malawi Lethrinops are occasionally exported by specialist African-cichlid importers, but argenteus specifically is unlikely to appear in an ordinary fish shop and there is little species-specific keeping or breeding experience on record. The husbandry notes here are extrapolated from sand-sifting Lethrinops generally and should be read as genus-level guidance.
The non-negotiable requirement for any sand-sifting Lethrinops is a deep bed of fine sand — silica or smooth play sand, at least 3–4 in deep across the whole tank floor — because the fish feeds by driving its jaws into the substrate and straining invertebrates across its gill rakers; coarse gravel or a bare bottom prevents this and causes chronic stress. As one of the larger Lethrinops, argenteus needs a long tank with generous open swimming space over the sand and only sparing rockwork. Water chemistry should match the lake: temperature 75–82 °F, pH 7.7–8.6, hard and alkaline, buffered with crushed coral or equivalent, with strong filtration and good oxygenation. Weekly partial water changes of around 25–30% are standard for Malawi tanks and help guard against Malawi bloat, the serious digestive disease that strikes these cichlids when kept in poor water or fed an over-rich, fatty diet. A varied diet of quality cichlid pellet or flake plus sinking frozen foods such as bloodworm, Mysis and Daphnia that the fish can sift from the sand is appropriate. Peaceful, similarly sized sand- and open-water Malawi cichlids make the best tankmates; boisterous mbuna are best avoided. Breeding, where attempted, would be expected to follow the standard maternal-mouthbrooder routine.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Lethrinops argenteus as Least Concern (assessed 20 June 2018; e.T61053A148671837), on the basis that it is considered reasonably widespread within Lake Malawi with no major lake-wide threats currently identified. That status should be read against the broader pressures bearing on the lake as a whole: a heavily fished and food-insecure shoreline, sedimentation and nutrient loading from catchment deforestation and agriculture, and warming-driven changes in lake mixing and productivity documented in the fisheries and limnology literature. As a sand-dwelling species and a component of the lakeshore food catch, argenteus is exposed to the beach-seine and trawl fishing that works exactly the open-sand habitat it occupies, so localised fishing pressure is a real if not yet population-level concern. None of these factors is recorded as an imminent danger to this particular cichlid, but they are the backdrop against which a sand-dwelling, locally harvested endemic's long-term prospects should be judged.
