Taxonomy & naming
The black jacundá was formally described in 2018 by Henrique R. Varella and Priscila Madoka M. Ito in the Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia, on material drawn from years of intensive fieldwork in the Xingu's cataracts. Before that it had circulated in the hobby for some time as 'Crenicichla sp. Xingu III', and Brazilian fishermen had long called it the black jacundá (jacundá being a regional name for pike cichlids). The holotype, an adult female of 11 in standard length, was collected at the Cachoeira do Jericoá on the Rio Xingu and is held at the Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazônia (INPA 53073); the type series runs to dozens of paratypes spanning roughly 1–11.5 in SL. Varella and Ito placed it as the tenth species of the Crenicichla lugubris group sensu Kullander and Varella (2015) — the cluster of large, deep-bodied, blunt-snouted pike cichlids — though they were candid that its closest relatives within that group remain unresolved; in general body shape, snout form and squamation it most resembles Crenicichla lugubris and Crenicichla adspersa, but it uniquely lacks the dark caudal-fin blotch that most congeners carry, a trait it shares only with Crenicichla johanna, Crenicichla monicae and (in the acutirostris group) Crenicichla ternetzi. Its scale counts (74–86 in the E1 row) are unusually low for the lugubris group and blur the boundary long used to separate the small-scaled lugubris/acutirostris groups from large-scaled species. In 2023 a major integrative phylogeny of the pike cichlids by Varella, Kullander, Menezes, Oliveira and López-Fernández split the old catch-all genus Crenicichla and erected the genus Lugubria for the lugubris group; under that classification the fish is Lugubria dandara, the name now used by FishBase and the Catalog of Fishes. Both combinations refer to the same fish, and the original binomial Lugubria dandara remains in wide use in the hobby and literature.
Morphology
Lugubria dandara is a large, robust pike cichlid: the largest measured specimen reached 11.5 in SL, and FishBase lists a maximum of about 11 in SL, placing it among the bigger members of its group. The body is moderately elongate with depth roughly 16–23% of standard length, carried on a deep, laterally compressed head with a bluntish, pointed snout and a slightly prognathous lower jaw — the heavyset proportions typical of the lugubris group rather than the slender, long-snouted form of the acutirostris pikes. Its defining feature is colour. Adults are essentially uniform black in life (drying to dark brown in preservative), with only a darker, conspicuous suborbital bar breaking the tone; there is no dark blotch on the caudal-fin base, a useful diagnostic. Ripe females flush the underside of the body — notably the abdomen — the iris, and parts of the paired fins a vivid magenta as a sign of gonadal maturity, and may show a whitish, dark-margined band on the dorsal fin; mature males run a slightly darker ground colour and lack the magenta. This colour-coded reproductive signalling against an otherwise jet-black fish is the main sexual dimorphism, as the sexes are alike in pattern. Juveniles look entirely different: small fish wear three crisp dark markings — a mid-dorsal stripe, a mid-lateral stripe, and a row of punctations along the upper lateral line — which fade as the fish darkens, the body becoming almost uniformly black by about 3 in SL. Notably, juvenile Lugubria dandara lack the scattered small dark spots on head and nape that mark the young of related lugubris-group species.
Habitat
The species is endemic to the middle and upper Rio Xingu basin in the Brazilian state of Pará, including the Rio Iriri, the major left-bank tributary, and extending upstream past São Félix do Xingu toward the Parque Indígena do Xingu. Its downstream limit is firmly set at the Belo Monte narrows; the upstream limit is still unclear. This is a strictly rheophilic fish of the Xingu's clearwater cataracts — the shallow rapids and rocky channels of a classic Amazonian clearwater river. It lives over substrates of large rocks with little accumulated sediment, hiding in crevices among the boulders and making short foraging excursions into the current, frequently alongside the syntopic black darter-pike Teleocichla preta, which shares both its habitat and its dark camouflage. The Xingu is warm, soft and acidic to near-neutral, transparent clearwater of the Brazilian Shield, low in dissolved minerals and conductivity; in the upper-shallow-rapids band the fish occupies, depths are on the order of one to a few metres over the rocky bottom. The original describers gave no in-situ chemistry table for this species, so precise field pH and temperature for its exact sites are not published, but they fall within the Xingu clearwater envelope of warm temperatures and soft, mildly acidic water.
Feeding
Lugubria dandara is a piscivorous ambush predator, a role written into both its body and its behaviour: it shelters in rock crevices and dashes out to seize prey, and FishBase places it at a high trophic level of about 4.5. The original description gives unusually direct dietary evidence from radiographs of preserved specimens — one fish (4 in SL) had swallowed an entire characid whole, and a large adult (11 in SL) held a crab claw in its gut, showing that the diet spans fishes and hard-shelled crustaceans across the size range. Field observers (Oliver Lucanus and Leandro Sousa) watched it feeding on small loricariid catfishes, and ornamental fishermen report that the black jacundá will shadow their harvest and snatch plecos straight out of a careless collector's hand. In its rapids community it functions as a crepuscular-to-opportunistic predator of the smaller rheophilic fishes and invertebrates that crowd the rocky channels, its black coloration doubling as camouflage among the shaded boulders for ambush hunting.
Mating
Direct observations of courtship and pair formation in the wild have not been published for this recently described species. Like other large pike cichlids, it is expected to be monogamous and to form territorial pairs for breeding, with the female advertising reproductive readiness through the magenta flush that develops on her abdomen, iris and paired fins — a conspicuous signal against her otherwise black body that almost certainly functions in courtship and pair bonding. Crenicichla pike cichlids generally pair off, defend a territory centred on a chosen cave or rock crevice, and can be intensely aggressive toward rivals and unready partners; there is no reason to think the black jacundá departs from this pattern. The detail of its courtship sequence in the rapids remains undocumented and is a genuine gap in what is known about the fish.
Breeding
The reproductive biology of Lugubria dandara has not been documented in the wild, and the original description offers no spawning data. Inference therefore rests on the pike cichlids as a group: Crenicichla (and the segregated lugubris-group genus Lugubria) are biparental substrate and cave spawners. A pair selects a sheltered cave, crevice or overhang, the female deposits an adhesive egg plaque on the chamber wall, and both parents guard the brood — the female tending and fanning the eggs while the male patrols the territory — then jointly shepherd the free-swimming fry. Clutch size is not recorded for this species; large lugubris-group pikes are typically reported to lay on the order of a few hundred adhesive eggs (a genus-typical figure, not a measured one for dandara). In the wild its boulder-cataract habitat supplies an abundance of rock crevices that would serve as natural spawning chambers. Spawning has not, as far as published records show, been achieved or reported in aquaria for this species, so its captive breeding remains essentially undescribed.
In the aquarium
The black jacundá has been in the hobby for years under the trade name 'Crenicichla sp. Xingu III' and is prized by pike-cichlid specialists for its near-uniform black colour, but it is a large, predatory fish for experienced keepers only. Adults approach 11 in, so a single fish needs a big tank — on the order of 71 in of length (roughly 120 US gal) or more — and a pair needs more still, with the footprint and broken sightlines to let a subordinate or unready mate escape, since pike cichlids can be lethally aggressive toward conspecifics. The aquascape should echo the Xingu rapids: a sand or smooth-pebble base with a generous architecture of large rounded rocks and caves, plus driftwood, giving the fish the crevices it instinctively shelters in. Because it comes from clean, fast, well-oxygenated cataract water, strong filtration, brisk flow and high oxygenation suit it far better than the still tank many cichlids tolerate. Target the Xingu clearwater envelope: warm water around 82–88 °F and soft, mildly acidic to near-neutral conditions (about pH 5.5–7.0) kept very clean, with the large, frequent water changes a big predator's bioload demands. Feeding is straightforward for a committed piscivore — it takes meaty foods readily (and a varied diet of suitable frozen and prepared carnivore foods is healthier than a fish-only menu, which risks disease and poor nutrition) — but tankmates are the hard part: it will eat anything small enough to swallow and is aggressive, so companions must be robust, similarly sized, and given room, while delicate or slow fish are off the menu in both senses. Wild-caught stock predominates, as captive breeding is essentially unreported, so quarantine and patient acclimatisation matter.
Conservation
Lugubria dandara has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List — it carries no Red List, CITES or CMS listing and is formally Not Evaluated. The describers did, however, run a preliminary IUCN-criteria assessment in 2018 and concluded the species would qualify as Least Concern, because its extent of occurrence (about 93,364 mi²) and area of occupancy (about 2,252 mi²) both exceed the thresholds for any threatened category under criterion B. That conclusion comes with a serious caveat the authors stressed themselves. The Belo Monte dam complex has already reshaped a large part of the fish's range: collecting sites upstream of the Pimental dam are now drowned beneath an in-stream reservoir filled from the 2015–16 rainy season, where the lotic rapids the species depends on will give way to still, silting, lake-like water; and downstream sites — including the type locality — have been severely dewatered by the diversion of the Xingu into an off-stream reservoir feeding the main Belo Monte powerhouse, attenuating the river's natural flood pulse. On top of the dam, the licensed Belo Sun Volta Grande gold project proposes open-pit mines and a cyanide-leach operation within about 1 mi of the Xingu channel below Pimental, raising the prospect of sediment loading and toxic spills in the very stretch this rheophilic pike inhabits. Because Lugubria dandara is so tightly bound to clean rocky cataracts, the authors urged that its populations be monitored despite the Least-Concern conclusion; this is a black pike whose fate is entangled with one of the most contested rivers in the Amazon.
