Lugubria acutirostris, the sharpnose pike cichlid, is a large, slender ambush predator of the clearwater rivers of the southern Amazon — the Tapajós and Aripuanã drainages of Brazil. Named for the long, conspicuously tapered snout that separates it from its bulkier relatives, it belongs to the small-scaled, large-bodied lugubris assemblage of pike cichlids that a 2023 revision moved into the new genus Lugubria. Like all pikes it is a lie-in-wait piscivore and a biparental cave spawner, a torpedo of a fish that hangs motionless among submerged wood and rock until a smaller fish drifts within range.

Taxonomy & naming

The sharpnose pike was described by the German-born British ichthyologist Albert Günther in 1862, in the fourth volume of his Catalogue of the Fishes in the British Museum, as Lugubria acutirostris. The name rests on a single specimen — the unique holotype, BMNH 1853.3.19.46, in the Natural History Museum, London — collected somewhere in the Amazon basin of Brazil; the original type locality is no more precise than that. Günther coined the epithet to mark the fish out from its near-relatives: he judged its snout 'comparatively much more produced' than that of the similar, blunter-headed Crenicichla johanna. The species has been treated as valid more or less continuously since, by Ploeg in his 1991 revision of the genus, by Kullander (1997, and again in the 2003 Check List of the Freshwater Fishes of South and Central America), and by Varella and Ito (2018). In a sweeping 2023 reappraisal of the pike cichlids, Varella, Kullander, Menezes, Oliveira and López-Fernández used an integrative phylogenetic analysis to break the unwieldy old genus Crenicichla into several lineages; the large, small-scaled members of the historic 'lugubris group' — including the type species Crenicichla lugubris itself — were placed in a new genus, Lugubria, so that the fish is now also written Lugubria acutirostris. Both combinations are current in the literature; the long-established Crenicichla name remains the one under which the fish is traded and most widely catalogued. Within that assemblage acutirostris sits among the heavyweight Amazonian pikes such as L. lugubris, L. johanna and L. marmorata, and at least one related undescribed form from the Madeira system circulates in the hobby as 'Crenicichla sp. acutirostris Madeira'.

Ploeg's 1991 revision drew the confirmed range tightly: the right-hand (southern) side of the lower Rio Madeira, the Rio Maués, and the lower Rio Tapajós. A specimen from the lower Rio Xingu that Ploeg himself had identified as L. acutirostris was subsequently judged to belong to a separate, distinct species (referred to informally as 'C. sp. Xingu II'), so the fish's presence in the Xingu drainage remains unconfirmed rather than established. Despite its size and its placement among the large-bodied lugubris group, field workers note that acutirostris is, in markings and general build, more reminiscent of small-bodied 'dwarf' pike cichlids such as Crenicichla notophthalmus and Crenicichla regani than of its bulkier large-species relatives — a resemblance that is not reflected in its actual phylogenetic placement and illustrates how visually misleading body pattern can be across Crenicichla.

Morphology

This is a large pike cichlid. FishBase records a maximum of about 9 in total length, and aquarium specimens are commonly cited around 9 inches (roughly 8.5–9 in), but the taxonomic literature on the genus gives a considerably bigger figure: Ploeg's 1991 revision, working from field-collected material rather than the trade, puts the maximum body length at around 14 in, on a par with several of its bulkier lugubris-group relatives. The FishBase figure likely reflects the smaller fish that reach aquarists rather than the true wild maximum, so 14 in is the number to trust for a fully grown, field-collected adult. The body is the classic Crenicichla shape — strongly elongate, nearly cylindrical at the front and laterally compressed toward the tail, built for a sudden forward lunge rather than sustained cruising. The defining feature, and the source of both the scientific and common names, is the head: the snout is markedly long and pointed, more drawn-out than in the otherwise similar Crenicichla johanna, giving the fish a distinctly 'sharp-nosed' profile and a large, deeply cleft mouth. The species is small-scaled, a trait shared across the lugubris assemblage. Ground colour is a muted olive-brown to grey, paler below, often broken by darker mottling or a row of blotches along the flank and the dark lateral striping common to the johanna–lugubris fishes; juveniles and stressed adults can show more contrast than settled, dominant individuals. Two geographic populations differ subtly in tone: fish from the Rio Arapiuns run more yellowish across the back, while those from the Rio Tapajós proper show a more reddish cast beneath the dorsal fin. Sexual dimorphism is relatively slight but has specific, field-documented markers: females stay a little smaller and carry a narrow, pale submarginal band along the posterior dorsal fin that males lack, while males show finer and more extensive spotting on the caudal fin. Sexes are difficult to separate reliably in immature fish.

Habitat

Lugubria acutirostris is endemic to Brazil, where it is confined to the southern (right-bank) tributaries of the Amazon — the Tapajós River basin and the Aripuanã River basin (the latter a major affluent of the Madeira). The IUCN records it from the Brazilian states of Amazonas, Mato Grosso and Pará. The type specimen — the sole basis for Günther's 1862 description — was collected in the mid-19th century by the naturalist Henry Walter Bates from the Rio Cupari, a lower Rio Tapajós tributary whose water is clouded with sediment near its mouth; it stood as the only known example of the species for over a century until further collecting in the 1970s confirmed a wider, if still restricted, range across the lower Tapajós, Madeira and Maués systems.

These are clearwater rivers draining the ancient Brazilian Shield: comparatively transparent, nutrient-poor waters running over rock, sand and submerged wood, in contrast to the silt-laden whitewater of the main Amazon or the tea-stained blackwater of the Rio Negro. Field surveys describe the species as a habitat generalist rather than a specialist of one biotope type — found along stony river banks, in narrow (as little as 10 ft wide) clearwater tributaries over gravel and rock, and around drowned timber, wherever cover for an ambush predator is available. As a benthopelagic predator the fish keeps to structured habitat — among boulders, drowned timber and the broken rocky margins typical of shield-river rapids and runs — where it can lie concealed and ambush passing prey. FishBase characterises the species as tropical, with a reported temperature range of about 79–82 °F, a pH up to roughly 7.0 (i.e. neutral to mildly acidic), and hardness up to about 15 dH; these clearwater drainages are generally soft and close to neutral. Precise in-situ depth measurements for this species have not been published, but as a fish of river channels, rocky runs and the structured margins of medium-to-large rivers it occupies the shallow-to-moderate band of the water column rather than deep open water; the figures here reflect that typical river habit rather than a logged field record.

Feeding

Like all pike cichlids, the sharpnose pike is a predator. FishBase places it at a trophic level near 3.7, consistent with a diet built around live animal prey, and the lugubris-group fishes to which it belongs are among the most strongly piscivorous of the pikes. The hunting style is ambush rather than pursuit: the fish hangs almost motionless against wood or rock, relying on its drab, broken coloration for concealment, then unleashes a single explosive lunge powered by the rearward-set dorsal and anal fins, engulfing the target in the large, sharply pointed mouth. Small fishes are the staple, supplemented by large aquatic invertebrates, shrimp and whatever else it can overpower. In its native clearwater rivers it functions as one of the resident mid-level piscivores, helping to regulate populations of the smaller characins, catfishes and other fishes that share the rocky channel habitat. In aquaria it readily learns to take frozen and prepared predator foods once settled, but it is fundamentally a meat-eater and will treat any tankmate small enough to swallow as a meal.

Mating

Detailed field observations of courtship in this particular species have not been published, but its reproductive behaviour can be read confidently from the well-documented pattern of the genus and the lugubris assemblage. Pike cichlids form monogamous pairs and are biparental; pair formation involves mutual display, lateral spreading of the fins, and the gradual establishment and joint defence of a territory centred on a chosen spawning cavity. Outside of breeding these large pikes are solitary and intolerant of their own kind, and pairing in confinement is the delicate step — two unacquainted adults are as likely to fight as to bond, and a mismatched pair can end with one fish killing the other. Once a genuine pair is settled, however, the bond is strong and the two cooperate closely, the female typically taking the lead inside the cave while the male patrols and repels intruders from the wider territory. Heightened colour and intensified territorial aggression toward other fish are the usual outward signs that a pair is approaching spawning.

Breeding

Lugubria acutirostris is a biparental cave (substrate) spawner, the reproductive mode universal among pike cichlids and the lugubris group. The pair selects a sheltered recess — a crevice between rocks, the underside of a log, or in the aquarium a length of pipe, a cave or an overturned vessel — and the female attaches the eggs to its inner surface in the dark. She tends and fans the clutch while the male guards the surrounding territory; on hatching, the larvae are moved and the free-swimming fry are guarded jointly by both parents, which lead and shepherd the brood and drive off anything that approaches. Specific published figures for clutch size and egg or larval development times for this species are still lacking, but one direct field observation confirms just how long that care lasts: a pair was seen shepherding a brood of about 40 juveniles, roughly 2 in total length and estimated at two and a half months old — well past the point at which most cichlids have abandoned their young — consistent with the general pattern that the larger Crenicichla, acutirostris among them, tend their broods for considerably longer than is typical for the family. Large lugubris-group pikes are substantial fish that produce correspondingly large clutches — on the order of several hundred to over a thousand eggs in their bigger relatives — and the species has only rarely been imported and is not a commonly bred aquarium fish, so most other details of its reproduction in captivity are still inferred from its congeners rather than documented for acutirostris itself.

In the aquarium

The sharpnose pike reaches the aquarium trade only sporadically, usually as wild Brazilian imports from the Rio Tapajós, and it is a fish for the experienced large-cichlid or predator keeper rather than a beginner. It is a true 'monster fish' in both temperament and eventual size: most aquarium fish top out around 8.5–9 in, but a fully grown wild adult can reach on the order of 14 in, so a tank plan should be built around the larger figure rather than the trade-typical one.

A single adult or a confirmed pair needs a long tank — a footprint of at least about 59 in is a sensible minimum for a fish that may approach 14 in, with vendors citing 75 US gallons (~75 US gal) as a floor for smaller individuals and considerably more being appropriate for a full-grown one. The decisive design principle is broken sightlines: these fish are territorial and intolerant of conspecifics, so the layout should be heavily furnished with driftwood, large rounded rocks, root tangles and lengths of pipe to create caves and visual barriers. A sand or fine-gravel substrate and subdued lighting suit a fish that comes from rocky clearwater channels and naturally hides; pieces of bogwood and a few sturdy or floating plants help it feel secure and colour up.

Water should mirror its warm, soft, near-neutral clearwater home. Aim for 79–82 °F (about 76–82 °F), a pH in the 6.0–7.5 range, and soft to moderately hard water (up to roughly 15 dH). As a large predator with a heavy protein intake it is a messy fish that produces a substantial bioload, so strong, well-oversized filtration and generous, regular water changes are essential to keep nitrate low; the species, like pikes generally, does best in clean, well-oxygenated water and resents accumulated waste.

Diet is straightforward once the fish has settled: it will usually accept frozen and prepared predator foods — chunky frozen items, mussel, prawn, earthworms, and good-quality sinking carnivore pellets — alongside any live food offered. Feeder fish are unnecessary and best avoided on disease and nutrition grounds. The cardinal stocking mistake is treating it as community-safe: anything small enough to fit in that long mouth will eventually be eaten, and even robust tankmates may be harassed. Suitable companions are fast, large, open-water or armoured fishes that occupy different zones — large characins, big plecos and similar — chosen for a tank with enough room to dilute aggression. Keeping two pikes together, unless they are a genuine bonded pair in a very large, well-broken-up tank, commonly ends in one killing the other; this intraspecific intolerance, not finicky water chemistry, is the species' real husbandry challenge.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Lugubria acutirostris as Least Concern, assessed on 7 November 2018 (published 2022) by the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio). The assessment notes the species is frequent within its range across the Brazilian states of Amazonas, Mato Grosso and Pará, with an unknown population trend and threats described as diffuse but not amounting to a risk of extinction. It carries no CITES listing and is of no commercial fisheries interest, reaching the aquarium trade only in small numbers as a wild-caught oddity. The broader concern is habitat-scale rather than species-specific: the Tapajós and Madeira drainages it inhabits are squarely in the path of Amazonia's accelerating pressures — hydroelectric dam construction, deforestation, and gold-mining with its associated mercury contamination and sedimentation — all of which degrade the clearwater, structured-channel habitats this ambush predator depends on. None is documented as a present threat to the sharpnose pike in particular, but they form the backdrop against which its long-term status in the southern Amazon should be read.
