Lugubria cincta is a large pike cichlid of the western and central Amazon, an elongate, torpedo-shaped ambush predator named for the row of nine or ten dark bars that girdle the upper half of its body. It belongs to the lugubris assemblage — the giants of the genus — and in 2023 was reassigned to the resurrected genus Lugubria, so much of the recent literature now lists it as Lugubria cincta. Like its relatives it is a biparental cave spawner and a committed fish-eater, hanging motionless in cover until prey drifts within reach.

Taxonomy & naming

Lugubria cincta was named by the British ichthyologist Charles Tate Regan in 1905, in the Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London, on material from Marajó Island at the mouth of the Amazon in Pará, Brazil. The name has an unusually tangled nomenclatural history. It was published as a replacement name for Crenicichla brasiliensis var. fasciatus Pellegrin, 1904, which was secondarily preoccupied within Crenicichla by Cychla fasciata Jardine, 1843 once that older name was moved into the genus; under Article 72.7 of the zoological Code a replacement name automatically inherits the type of the name it replaces, so cincta carries Pellegrin's 1904 type (MNHN 1902-0095) even though Regan mistakenly cited a British Museum specimen as the holotype. The species has been treated as valid Lugubria cincta by every major reviewer since — Ploeg (1991), Kullander (1997, and in the 2003 Reis et al. checklist), Ortega & Vari, and the recent Peruvian and Ecuadorian faunal works. In 2023 Varella, Kullander, Menezes, Oliveira and López-Fernández published an integrative phylogenetic revision of the pike cichlids (subtribe Crenicichlina) that split the old, oversized Crenicichla into several genera; the large lugubris-group species were placed in a resurrected genus Lugubria, named for its type species Crenicichla (now Lugubria) lugubris. Under that classification the fish is Lugubria cincta (Regan, 1905) — the name FishBase and the Catalog of Fishes now carry — though much of the hobby and older literature still uses Lugubria cincta, and the two names refer to exactly the same animal.

Morphology

Lugubria cincta has the classic pike-cichlid bauplan: a long, cylindrical, only slightly compressed body, a flattened head, and large jaws set with rows of fine conical teeth — the unmistakable profile of an ambush piscivore built to lunge. FishBase records a maximum of about 7.5 in standard length, but that figure almost certainly understates the species; hobby sources and field observers describe a substantially larger fish, with adults around 8 in and dominant males reaching roughly 10 in total length, in keeping with the generally large size of the lugubris group. Ground colour is olive- to grey-brown over a paler, often silvery belly, and the diagnostic feature that gives the fish its name is a series of nine or ten dark vertical bars crossing the upper half of the flank — the 'girdle' of cincta. Many specimens carry pale spotting or reticulation on the head and fore-body and a dark blotch or ocellus on the gill cover, features shared with related strigata-group pikes. Sexual dimorphism follows the genus pattern: males grow larger, longer-finned and more robust, while ripe females are deeper-bodied and develop a swollen, often cherry- to reddish-flushed belly when in spawning condition. The two sexes are otherwise similar enough that immature fish are hard to sex reliably.

Habitat

The species is distributed across the western and central Amazon basin, recorded from the Napo River drainage of Ecuador and Peru downstream along the Amazon mainstem to Marajó Island at the river's mouth in Brazil; the Catalog of Fishes also lists it from Colombia, giving a range spanning four countries. Within that range it is a fish of flowing water rather than of still floodplain lagoons. Field accounts describe it in well-oxygenated rivers and channels over bottoms of sand, gravel and scattered cobbles strewn with submerged wood and leaf litter, including stretches near rapids and faster current — a more rheophilic habitat than many of its blackwater congeners occupy. FishBase characterises it as a benthopelagic tropical freshwater fish living at about 75–81 °F; reported in-situ chemistry is soft and slightly acidic to neutral, around pH 6–7. Documented depths are shallow — the river-margin and channel zone these fish hunt in lies within the top few metres of the water column. Like other pike cichlids it spends much of its time close to structure on or near the bottom, using rock, root and wood as both cover and ambush position.

Feeding

Lugubria cincta is a carnivore and, like all members of its genus, principally a piscivore. FishBase places it at a trophic level near 3.7, consistent with a diet dominated by other fishes taken by ambush. The mechanics are those of the whole genus: the fish holds station among cover, then accelerates with a sudden lunge powered by its long, muscular body, engulfing prey with a fast expansion of the large mouth. Smaller and younger individuals take proportionately more aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, crustaceans — shifting toward a fish-heavy diet as the gape grows. Within its riverine community it is an opportunistic top-tier predator that will attack essentially any animal small enough to swallow, functioning as one of the principal predators of its biotope.

Mating

Detailed wild observations specific to Lugubria cincta are scarce, and most of what can be said draws on the well-documented and remarkably consistent reproductive biology of the genus. Pike cichlids are territorial and form monogamous pairs. Outside breeding the fish may be found singly or loosely grouped, but a ripening pair establishes and vigorously defends a territory centred on a spawning cave or crevice. Courtship is intense: experienced breeders describe a head-down, body-shaking display in which the ripe female — her belly swollen and frequently flushed cherry-red — presents herself to the male, a dance reminiscent of the West African kribs. Pair compatibility is the crux of the whole process. Pike cichlids are notorious for sudden, lethal intraspecific aggression, and an ill-matched pairing can end with one fish killing the other; conversely, a well-matched pair often bonds almost instantly and stays together. This unpredictability is the single biggest obstacle to breeding any large pike, this species included.

Breeding

Lugubria cincta is a biparental cave (substrate) spawner — the reproductive mode universal to the pike cichlids and the assumption that all reliable sources apply to it. The pair selects a sheltered site, typically the underside of a rock, a crevice between stones, or the interior of a cave or hollow, and the female attaches a clutch of adhesive eggs to its roof or wall. Both parents care for the brood in a divided-labour arrangement: the female tends and fans the eggs and wrigglers inside the cave while the male patrols and defends the surrounding territory. After hatching the wrigglers are kept in the nest until they become free-swimming, at which point the pair shepherds the fry as a closely guarded school, herding them back into cover at any disturbance. A large water change and good live-food conditioning are commonly cited as spawning triggers in the related large pikes. Specific clutch counts for Lugubria cincta have not been published in the sources consulted; large lugubris-group pikes are substantial, productive spawners, but no verified figure for this species was found, so the count is left undocumented here rather than guessed.

In the aquarium

Lugubria cincta reaches the trade only occasionally and is a fish for the experienced cichlid keeper rather than the beginner. Its adult size — well over 8 in — and its predatory, territorial temperament put it at the demanding end of pike-cichlid husbandry. A single adult or a pair needs a long tank; roughly 59 in of length and on the order of 130–160 US gal is a sensible minimum, with more length always better for diffusing aggression. Because the species comes from flowing, well-oxygenated water, generous, over-sized filtration that delivers brisk current and high dissolved oxygen suits it far better than the still conditions that satisfy many lowland cichlids; a sand-and-cobble bottom with piled rock and bogwood building plenty of caves and broken sightlines reproduces the natural biotope and gives the fish the ambush cover it expects.

Water should be soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral (about pH 6–7) and warm (75–81 °F). The species is reasonably tolerant of a range of hardness once acclimatised, but is sensitive to accumulated dissolved waste, so a mature filter and regular water changes matter. The diet is straightforwardly carnivorous: a varied menu of meaty frozen and live foods — and many individuals will, with patience, learn to accept good sinking pellets — produces the best colour and condition. Avoid a relentless diet of feeder fish, which carry disease and offer poor nutrition.

Tankmates are the hardest part. This is a confirmed predator that will eat anything it can swallow, so small fish are simply food. Companions must be robust, of comparable size, and ideally fast — large characins, big plecos and other sizeable, non-aggressive South Americans — kept in a tank big enough that the pike can hold a territory without monopolising the whole floor. The greatest danger, as with all large pikes, is conspecific: pairing must be approached carefully, with a divided introduction across a partition and ample cover so a rejected fish can escape, because intraspecific violence between an incompatible pair can be fatal. Keeping a young group together and letting a pair form naturally, sometimes with target fish to absorb aggression, is the proven route, but it demands space and vigilance.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Lugubria cincta as Least Concern (assessed 10 November 2020, published 2023; assessors Lima, Reis and Frederico), reflecting its wide distribution across the western and central Amazon and the absence of any identified major, range-wide threat. It carries no CITES listing and is of no commercial fisheries interest. As a widespread riverine generalist it is far less vulnerable than the many narrow-range pike cichlids confined to single rapids or tributaries. That favourable status sits, however, against the broader and accelerating pressures on Amazonian freshwaters — hydroelectric dam construction, deforestation, mining and its associated mercury contamination, and altered flow regimes — which are degrading aquatic habitats basin-wide. None of these is documented as a present danger to this particular species, but they are the backdrop against which its long-term outlook should be read.
