Taxonomy & naming
The German aquarist and ichthyologist Wolfgang Staeck described this fish in 1976 as Pseudotropheus fainzilberi, in an account of an ichthyological collecting trip to the northern end of Lake Nyasa (Lake Malawi) published in the German hobby journal Das Aquarium / Aquarium Aqua Terra. The type locality is Makonde, on the Tanzanian shore of the lake, and the name is anchored on a holotype and a single paratype held at the Natural History Museum in London (BMNH 1976.6.18.2 and 1976.6.18.3). For decades the species sat in the catch-all genus Pseudotropheus, but as workers split that assemblage apart it was moved into the rock-dwelling "zebra" genus erected by Stauffer and colleagues. This is where the nomenclature gets genuinely tangled. Two genus names compete for the same group of fish: Metriaclima Stauffer, Bowers, Kellogg & McKaye, 1997 and Maylandia Meyer & Foerster, 1984. The Cichlid Room Companion, the IUCN, and many recent authors (Ciccotto et al. 2011; Stauffer et al. 2016; Konings 2016) treat the fish as Metriaclima fainzilberi; FishBase, the Catalog of Fishes, and other databases list it as the valid name Maylandia fainzilberi, with Metriaclima as a junior synonym. Both refer to the same animal, and the choice is a question of which generic name has priority rather than a dispute about the species itself. A further wrinkle is purely a hobby matter: fish long traded as "Metriaclima sp. zebra chilumba" — including the famous Maison Reef and Luwino Reef populations — are now regarded as geographic variants of Maylandia fainzilberi rather than a separate undescribed species.
Morphology
This is a medium-sized, deep-bodied mbuna with the blunt-snouted, heavy-jawed build typical of the rock-scraping zebras. FishBase gives a maximum of about 5 in total length, and field observations agree that lake males usually top out near 5 in TL, with females roughly a quarter smaller; in aquaria, well-fed males commonly outgrow their wild counterparts and may reach 6.5–7 in. Sexual dimorphism is strong and is the easiest way to sex the fish. Dominant males carry a blue ground colour crossed by distinct dark vertical bars, typically with yellow-to-gold suffusion on the chest and throat; the dorsal fin colour is one of the most population-variable features, ranging from blue through yellow to orange depending on the reef. Females are far plainer — brown to bluish-grey, usually without the crisp barring of the male. Layered on top of this is a marked polychromatism: orange (O) and orange-blotched (OB, the "marmalade cat") morphs occur, especially among females and occasionally in blotched males. Because colour shifts so dramatically from locality to locality, Maylandia fainzilberi is notoriously hard to pin down on appearance alone, and reliable identification leans heavily on collection locality plus the diagnostic tooth and body proportions used to separate the zebra-group species.
Habitat
Maylandia fainzilberi is a Lake Malawi endemic and a creature of the rocky littoral. It is distributed along the lake's eastern side across the entire Tanzanian shore — from Matema in the north down to Hai Reef — and extends into Mozambican waters as far south as Lumbaulo; on the western, Malawian coast it occupies a separate stretch between Mdoka and Usisya. Within that range it is strictly tied to small and medium-sized rocks, which supply both the algae it grazes and the caves it shelters and spawns in; it is correspondingly rare where rocks are merely scattered over open sand. It is most often seen in the well-lit upper rocky zone, in very shallow water, but unlike many sediment-intolerant mbuna it also pushes into sediment-rich rocky biotopes at somewhat greater depth, and hobby observation generally places it within the top few metres down to roughly 33 ft. The water it lives in is the hard, alkaline lake water characteristic of Malawi: FishBase cites a pH around 8.0–9.0, hardness of about 10–18 dH, and temperatures of roughly 72–79 °F, consistent with the warm, highly buffered, mineral-rich conditions of the lake's surface layer.
Feeding
Like the other zebra mbuna, Maylandia fainzilberi is an aufwuchs grazer — aufwuchs being the dense felt of attached algae, diatoms and the tiny invertebrates living within it that coats sunlit rock. It works this matrix not by biting chunks out of it but by combing loose material free with its teeth, taking mostly diatoms and short algal strands. It is not, however, a strict bottom specialist: the species is frequently observed leaving the rocks to feed in open water, gathering in large schools to pick plankton from the water column. That flexibility — rock-grazer that will also filter the open water, and a tolerance for sediment that stricter algae-combers avoid — is a large part of why this fish is so widespread and abundant across its range, and why it is consistently described as one of the commonest mbuna wherever it occurs.
Mating
The breeding system is the polygynous, male-territorial arrangement typical of mbuna. Males in full breeding dress hold and defend territories centred on a cave among the rocks, and because the rocky habitat is densely populated these territories abut one another — neighbouring breeding males can be as little as a metre apart, producing the crowded, brilliantly coloured mosaic of competing males that gives a Malawi rocky reef its character. Females, by contrast, are not territorial: they typically roam in large foraging schools, moving among the male territories, though individuals are regularly seen alone as well. A receptive female enters a male's cave to spawn; outside of that the sexes lead largely separate lives. There is no lasting pair bond, and a single dominant male will spawn with multiple females over a season.
Breeding
Maylandia fainzilberi is a maternal mouthbrooder, the reproductive mode shared by essentially all mbuna. Spawning takes place inside the male's rock cave; the female lays a relatively small clutch — on the order of 20 to 40 eggs — and takes them into her mouth, where fertilization and the entire incubation proceed. The species shows the classic egg-spot mechanism of the haplochromine cichlids, the male's anal-fin ocelli prompting the female to snap at them and so draw in milt to fertilize the brood she already holds. A holding female leaves the territory and hides solitarily among the rocks, fasting while she broods, and releases free-swimming fry after about three weeks. Parental investment ends abruptly there: once the fry are released they are abandoned, with no further guarding, and must fend for themselves in the rock crevices. In aquaria the species breeds readily given the right setup, and the small clutch size and quick cycle make it a forgiving subject for hobbyists once a harem is established.
In the aquarium
Maylandia fainzilberi is a moderately demanding mbuna that rewards keepers who take its Lake Malawi ecology seriously. A single-species group — one male with three or four females — needs a minimum of around 40–50 US gal, but a larger tank of 55 US gal or more is strongly preferred, especially if tank-mates are added. The real non-negotiable is rockwork: the tank should be packed with stacked stones, slate, or commercially available ceramic cave modules, creating a continuous run of hiding places and visual breaks. Without enough broken sight lines, the dominant male will fixate on subordinates and females without relief, and subordinate fish may be harassed to death. Open sand at the front gives females somewhere to retreat and feed in safety. Substrate should be fine sand or gravel; crushed coral or aragonite added to the substrate or run in a bag in the filter helps buffer pH upward and maintain the hardness the fish expect.
Water chemistry must mirror Lake Malawi: pH 8.0–8.6 (the lower end of the wild 8.0–9.0 range is easier to maintain reliably in a closed system), total hardness around 10–18 °dH, and temperature 72–79 °F. Consistent water chemistry matters more than hitting a precise number; wild swings in pH or hardness stress the fish and lower disease resistance. Excellent filtration and regular water changes are essential — mbuna produce heavy biological waste and are sensitive to nitrate accumulation. Turnover of at least four to six times the tank volume per hour is a reasonable starting point.
Chooser tankmates carefully. Other Lake Malawi mbuna of similar size and aggression level — other Maylandia, Pseudotropheus, or Cynotilapia species — are broadly compatible, but mixing closely related zebra-group species is a genuine trap. Maylandia fainzilberi hybridises readily with other members of the zebra complex (including Maylandia zebra and Maylandia callainos), and because location forms from different reefs are colour-distinct in the wild, hybrids produced in the aquarium contaminate lines that hobbyists specifically maintain for their locality authenticity. Best practice is to keep only one Maylandia or Metriaclima species per tank unless the setup is very large and the species clearly differentiated. Predatory or overly large cichlids, slow-moving South American cichlids, and any small fish likely to be eaten should be avoided. No mbuna is appropriate in a community tank with typical tropical fish.
Diet is a critical keeper pitfall. In the lake Maylandia fainzilberi's staple is aufwuchs — filamentous algae, diatoms, and the tiny crustaceans and invertebrates embedded in that algal mat. The digestive tract of this and all closely related aufwuchs-grazing mbuna is adapted for a low-protein, high-vegetable diet, and feeding high-protein foods (beefheart, bloodworm, and similar protein-rich live or frozen foods) is the single most common route to Malawi bloat, the common name for a poorly understood metabolic and bacterial condition that causes severe abdominal swelling and is frequently fatal. The diet should be built around high-quality spirulina-based flake or pellet supplemented with blanched spinach, nori, or other vegetable matter; the protein component, if any, should be small and occasional. Variety within a veggie-heavy framework is fine; the rule of thumb is to avoid anything that a fish working a rocky reef would never encounter.
Breeding in the aquarium is straightforward once a stable group is established. The male will claim a cave or flat rock as a spawning site and court females persistently; a receptive female will spawn in the cave and immediately take up to 20–40 eggs into her mouth. At this point the holding female should ideally be left in the display tank unless she is being visibly harassed — unnecessary stripping or netting causes her to swallow or eject the brood prematurely. After roughly three weeks at 75–79 °F she will release free-swimming fry that are immediately capable of feeding on crushed flake or newly hatched brine shrimp. The fry are not guarded after release, so if they are to be raised in quantity they should be moved to a grow-out tank. Because several females in different stages of brooding may be present simultaneously, production in a well-run harem group can be quite regular.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Maylandia fainzilberi as Least Concern, in an assessment by Konings and Kazembe dated 20 June 2018 (an errata version was issued in 2019 to correct an assessor's name). The justification is straightforward: the species is endemic to Lake Malawi but widespread along both shores, common at every known locality, and faces no major, range-wide threat. It is sometimes taken incidentally in subsistence chirimila nets and is regularly collected for the ornamental trade — where it moves under names such as "Chilumba Zebra" and "Goldbreast Zebra" — but neither pressure is judged significant at the population level, and the population trend is listed as stable. That species-level security sits inside a basin under mounting strain, however. Lake Malawi faces warming surface waters and strengthening stratification that reduce the deep-water mixing on which the lake's productivity depends, alongside catchment deforestation, sedimentation and nutrient loading, and heavy fishing pressure on a fast-growing lakeshore population. For a shallow-water, rock-bound grazer like this one, the most direct local risk is shoreline disturbance and sedimentation smothering the algae-covered rocks it depends on; for now those are background concerns rather than documented declines, but they are the context in which even an abundant mbuna's long-term prospects should be read.
