Hard, alkaline, well-buffered water of the kind that defines Lake Malawi — stability matters more than chasing a single number.

Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Hybridization watchi

Maylandia gallireyae is a small, shell-dwelling mbuna described in 2021 from Gallireya Reef in the north of Lake Malawi. Unusually for its genus — which is dominated by rock-bound aufwuchs grazers — it lives over sand among empty gastropod shells, into which females release their fry, a habit otherwise far better known from Lake Tanganyika. Long passed around in the hobby as the provisional 'Metriaclima sp. lanisticola north,' it was finally named, alongside its sister species Maylandia ngarae, for the reef where it was found.

Taxonomy & naming

Maylandia gallireyae was described in 2021 by Torin A. Miller, Adrianus (Ad) F. Konings and Jay R. Stauffer Jr., in a paper titled 'Descriptions of two new shell-dwelling species of Metriaclima (Cichlidae) from Lake Malawi, Africa,' published in Zootaxa (volume 5052, issue 3, pages 419–432). The two new species — gallireyae and Maylandia ngarae — had both circulated for years under the provisional name Metriaclima sp. 'lanisticola north.' The holotype of gallireyae (PSU 13370) comes from Gallireya Reef in Youngs Bay, the type locality, at roughly 10.500°S, 34.233°E. The authors placed both species in Metriaclima on the basis of a snout angle of about 45° and bicuspid teeth in the central part of the outer tooth row in both jaws; the two are distinguished from most other congeners by a black submarginal band in the dorsal and anal fins and four-to-five bars below the dorsal fin, and from each other by coloration and head proportions.

The genus name carries the familiar nomenclatural dispute of this group. The describers used Metriaclima (Stauffer et al. 1997, Greek for 'moderately sloping'), but the older name Maylandia (Meyer, Riehl & Zetzsche, 1984, honouring the German aquarist Hans-Joachim Mayland) has priority and is treated as the senior synonym. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, this atlas's authority for valid names, lists the species as valid under Maylandia gallireyae, with Metriaclima a synonym — the combination used here. Both names are in current use, and the original description and the Cichlid Room Companion both employ Metriaclima gallireyae.

The epithet is a toponym: gallireyae 'of Gallireya Reef,' the local name for the reef in Youngs Bay where the type series was collected.

Morphology

Maylandia gallireyae is a small mbuna, in keeping with its shell-dwelling habit. Field figures give males to about 3 in and females about 2.5 in total length (malawi.si) — well below the 3.5–5 in reached by the lake's rock-grazing zebra-group males. The body is the moderately compressed mbuna form, with the roughly 45° snout angle and the bicuspid central outer-row teeth that anchor it in the genus. Meristically it shares with its sister species four-to-five vertical bars below the dorsal fin and a black submarginal band in both the dorsal and anal fins.

Sexual dichromatism is present in the genus's usual moderate degree. Mature males develop a dark brown-to-blue overall coloration that largely obscures the flank-bar pattern, while females keep their visible bars — which extend onto the abdomen — over a lighter ground colour (malawi.si). The small size, sand-and-shell lifestyle and obscured male bars together give the fish a look distinct from the bold blue-and-black zebra mbuna it is related to.

Habitat

Maylandia gallireyae is a Lake Malawi endemic with a very limited distribution, restricted to Gallireya Reef in Youngs Bay and Chitimba Bay in the northern part of the lake (malawi.si). It is not a rock-zone fish in the usual mbuna sense. Instead it occupies sandy habitats strewn with empty gastropod shells, typically close to rocky structures such as large boulders or sandstone slabs that provide extra shelter — a sand-and-shell microhabitat at the margins of the rocky reef.

This is one of the defining points about the species: a genuine shell-dwelling mbuna, ecologically convergent on the famous shell-dwellers of Lake Tanganyika but evolved independently within the Malawi rock-cichlid radiation. Population density at the reef can be relatively high, with individuals often gathered in groups near shell concentrations. The water chemistry is the standard Lake Malawi envelope — an ancient, strongly buffered lake with surface waters around 75–82 °F, alkaline pH of roughly 7.7–8.6, and moderate hardness.

Feeding

Although it belongs to a genus of aufwuchs scrapers, Maylandia gallireyae feeds as an opportunistic omnivore suited to its sand-and-shell habitat. It combs loose algal material from shells and nearby rocks and picks at small invertebrates around the shell beds, while females and juveniles also take plankton from the water column above (malawi.si). It retains the bicuspid outer teeth of the genus, which serve the algal-combing component of the diet, but the heavy reliance on rock-surface aufwuchs that characterises the zebra-group rock-grazers is diluted here by the more varied pickings of the open sand.

For aquarists the same caution as for any Malawi mbuna applies — these are fundamentally algae-and-biofilm fish with guts that tolerate rich animal protein poorly, so a vegetable-forward diet with only modest live or frozen supplementation is the safe approach, guarding against the digestive disorder known as 'Malawi bloat.'

Mating

The social system is organised around shells rather than rock caves. Males defend shell-based territories on the sand, actively repelling conspecific intruders — especially other males — while remaining generally peaceful toward other species sharing the habitat (malawi.si). A male's empty gastropod shell, or a cluster of them, is the focus of both his territory and the spawning site, the sand-dwelling analogue of the rock cave used by the lake's other mbuna.

No formal courtship description has been published, but the behaviour follows the haplochromine-mbuna pattern adapted to a shell setting: the territorial male courts females at and into his shell territory with the genus's lateral displays, and spawning takes place there. Because males are darker and site-attached while females stay barred and more mobile, mate recognition is visual and territory-based, as in the rest of the genus.

Breeding

Maylandia gallireyae is a maternal mouthbrooder, but its breeding is tied to shells in a way unusual for a Malawi cichlid. Spawning occurs in the male's shell territory, after which the female carries the eggs and larvae buccally. Notably, field observation reports that she releases the young into snail shells — and does so earlier than many other mbuna, often around day 13–15 of incubation rather than the three weeks typical of rock-dwelling relatives (malawi.si). The shells then serve as ready-made refuges for the newly released fry, which is presumably the adaptive point of the whole shell association.

The male takes no part after fertilisation, and beyond releasing the fry into the protection of the shells the female's care is the standard mouthbrooding investment. Precise clutch sizes have not been published for the species; given its small body, broods are correspondingly small. In aquaria the species can be bred by recreating the sand-and-shell habitat and keeping a male with several females, with the shells doing much of the work of sheltering both adults and fry.

In the aquarium

Maylandia gallireyae is an uncommon but distinctive aquarium fish, and one that asks for a different setup from the rock-wall tanks most mbuna keepers build. For years it moved through the hobby under the provisional label 'Metriaclima sp. lanisticola north'; under either name it appeals to keepers who want a Malawi cichlid that behaves like a shell-dweller.

The recommended tank is around 65 US gal, furnished with a fine sand substrate and a generous supply of empty snail shells — importantly, shells substantially larger than those used for Tanganyikan shell-dwellers, to suit this larger fish (malawi.si). Plenty of rock should be added as well, both to create hiding places and to echo the boulder-and-slab structures the species shelters near in the lake. Keep it as a harem, one male with several females. Water should be hard and alkaline in the Lake Malawi mould — pH roughly 7.8–8.6, temperature 75–82 °F, moderate to hard general hardness — kept stable with the usual carbonate substrate, strong filtration and regular water changes.

Temperament is a point in its favour: gallireyae is generally peaceful toward other species, with aggression concentrated on conspecific rivals near the shells, so it is less of a tank-wrecker than the bigger zebra-group mbuna. It can be combined with other mbuna of comparable temperament, but its small size means it should not be housed with large, boisterous rock-cichlids that would monopolise the tank. Feed a vegetable-forward omnivore diet and provide enough shells that subordinate fish and brooding or released fry always have a refuge.

Conservation

Maylandia gallireyae has not been evaluated by the IUCN and carries no Red List status, consistent with its 2021 description. Its conservation interest is nonetheless clear from its biology: it is a micro-endemic, known only from Gallireya Reef and Chitimba Bay in the north of Lake Malawi, with the kind of extremely limited distribution — a couple of reefs — that the describers explicitly noted for both new shell-dwellers. A range that small means the entire world population depends on the integrity of a very few patches of sand-and-shell habitat.

That habitat may be more fragile than a rocky reef. Shell-dwelling depends on a supply of empty gastropod shells and on undisturbed sandy substrate, both of which are sensitive to sedimentation and to changes in the snail populations that produce the shells. The general pressures on northern Lake Malawi — sediment and nutrient loading from catchment deforestation and agriculture, fishing activity, and climate-driven warming that weakens the lake's seasonal mixing — are documented at the basin scale by reviews such as Chavula et al. (2023) in the Journal of Great Lakes Research and the IUCN's 2019 catchment assessment. None is recorded as an active decline in gallireyae specifically, but the combination of a tiny range and a specialised, substrate-dependent lifestyle makes this a species worth watching, and a reasonable future candidate for formal assessment.
