Maylandia mbenjii is a small, sharply coloured mbuna endemic to a single island group in the southern half of Lake Malawi — the Mbenji Islands — where it is one of the most abundant cichlids on the rocky shallows. Males are cobalt blue with a blaze of red-orange across the dorsal fin, a combination that earned the fish the trade nickname 'Red Top Cobalt Zebra' and makes it one of the more recognisable members of the Pseudotropheus zebra complex. Despite decades of collection for the ornamental trade, wild populations around Mbenji have remained stable, partly because the island community has maintained one of the most effective community-based fisheries management regimes in all of Malawi.

Taxonomy & naming

Jay Richard Stauffer Jr., N.J. Bowers, K.A. Kellogg, and Kenneth R. McKaye formally described this fish in 1997 as Metriaclima mbenjii, as part of a major revision of the blue-black Pseudotropheus zebra complex published in the Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia (volume 148, pp. 189–230). The description was based on a type series collected at Mbenji Island: the holotype is a male deposited at Pennsylvania State University as PSU 3069, with paratypes at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia (ANSP 176204, 2 specimens), Mzuzu Fisheries Unit (MFU 29, 2 specimens), additional PSU lots (3070–72, 3, 10, and 4 specimens respectively), and the U.S. National Museum (USNM 341930, 2 specimens).

The species was described in a newly proposed genus, Metriaclima, which the authors created for the zebra complex after arguing that the earlier name Maylandia Meyer & Förster 1984 was a nomen nudum — lacking a proper diagnosis. That nomenclatural argument has never fully settled. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (the primary taxonomic authority used by FishBase and GBIF) treats Metriaclima as a junior synonym of Maylandia, making the current valid combination Maylandia mbenjii (Stauffer, Bowers, Kellogg & McKaye, 1997). Konings and Stauffer, in contrast, consistently use Metriaclima mbenjii, and the 2018 IUCN assessment was published under that name. A 2025 Zootaxa analysis by Scharpf further supports Maylandia as valid. In practice both names appear widely in the literature and hobby press, and keepers may encounter either. This site follows the Catalog of Fishes: Maylandia mbenjii.

Before the formal description, the fish circulated in aquarium collections as Pseudotropheus sp. 'zebra mbenji' (first mentioned by Konings in his 1990 book on Lake Malawi cichlids) — the classic hobbyist provisional label for an island endemic recognized before it was named. The species sits within the broader Maylandia / Pseudotropheus zebra species flock of Lake Malawi, one of the most species-rich adaptive radiations of any lake on Earth.

Morphology

FishBase records a maximum standard length of 3.5 in SL for preserved or measured specimens (from the original description); the IUCN assessment gives 5 in TL as the field maximum; and malawi.si, drawing on Konings's in-lake observations, documents wild males reaching 5–5.5 in TL at Mbenji, with females running roughly 20% smaller. In well-fed aquarium conditions males have been recorded at up to 6.5 in TL. These figures are not contradictory — standard length (snout to caudal base) is inherently shorter than total length, and aquarium fish on rich diets regularly exceed wild size.

Fin counts from the original description: dorsal XVII–XVIII spines, 8–10 soft rays; anal III spines, 6–8 soft rays; gill rakers on the first ceratobranchial 11–13, on the first epibranchial 2–3. Body shape is described as fusiform and moderately deep, typical of the zebra complex.

Sexual dichromatism is pronounced. Breeding males are a clean cobalt to sky-blue over the body and head, with an orange to red dorsal fin; the caudal and pectoral fins may also show orange or reddish tones. The anal fin carries the cream-yellow egg-spot ocelli typical of Lake Malawi haplochromines, used in the spawning circuit to stimulate buccal fertilization. Females and non-breeding or subdominant males are plain brownish-grey with a yellow to orange dorsal fin. A notable feature of this species — remarked on by Konings and documented in malawi.si — is a relatively high frequency of OB (orange-blotched) females, in which the ground colour is replaced by irregular orange-and-dark marbling. Occasional OB males (sometimes called 'marmalade cats') and albino forms are also known, all occurring naturally in wild populations at Mbenji.

The species most likely to be confused with Maylandia mbenjii is Maylandia greshakei from Makokola Reef in the southeast arm — both share pale blue ground colour with red-orange dorsal fins. The two are separated geographically (different regions of the lake) and by morphometrics and meristics: Maylandia greshakei shows more intense red restricted to the proximal half of the caudal fin, while in Maylandia mbenjii the red extends more extensively, including into the pectoral fins. Their snout length, caudal fin length, and jaw tooth-row counts also differ in statistical analysis of the type series.

Habitat

Maylandia mbenjii is a strict Malawi endemic, confined to the Mbenji Islands — a cluster of rocky outcrops lying roughly 6 mi off the coast of Salima District on the western shore of the lake, in the southern half. The island group includes Mbenji, Kampambe, Ababi, and Penga Penga islands; depending on lake level, Kampambe and Mbenji are sometimes connected by a narrow isthmus. The GPS centre of the island group, per malawi.si, is approximately 13.4°S, 34.5°E. No population has been recorded at any other lake locality: Maylandia mbenjii is one of many Malawi cichlids whose entire world range fits within a few square kilometres of lake-bed.

Within that range it is predominantly a shallow-water, sediment-free rocky-reef specialist. malawi.si describes it as occurring mainly among large rocks in shallow water, with an extension into sediment-richer rocky biotopes at somewhat greater depths; it is rare where rocks are scattered on a sandy bottom. The IUCN assessment notes it is common at sites exposed to wave action — precisely the windward faces of the boulders where aufwuchs growth is thickest. No precise depth range is formally published in the description; the malawi.si account and Konings's field work indicate most individuals are taken in the upper several metres, consistent with other shallow-rocky-reef Maylandia species, though the fish does move somewhat deeper.

The water of Malawi's rocky shallows is warm, hard, and strongly alkaline. Typical surface and near-surface temperatures at Mbenji range from about 75 °F in the cool dry season to 82–84 °F during the hot season; pH runs 7.7–8.6, driven by high carbonate and bicarbonate alkalinity. These parameters are well documented from the lake-wide monitoring summarised by Chavula et al. (2023) and are the normal envelope for all Malawi mbuna. No site-specific chemistry measurements have been published for Mbenji itself — the values used here are habitat-typical for the lake's southern rocky shallows and are flagged as such.

Feeding

Maylandia mbenjii is an aufwuchs grazer in the classic mbuna mould. malawi.si describes it as feeding primarily on aufwuchs — the periphyton mat of diatoms, filamentous algae, cyanobacteria, and the microinvertebrates and detritus entangled within it — that coats the wave-washed boulders of Mbenji's rocky reef. The Cichlid Room Companion lists it as an 'algae comber,' distinguishing its brushing and nipping feeding style from the more muscular tearing of Labeotropheus or the planktivory of the utaka. The IUCN assessment adds an observation that it is also 'frequently observed feeding on plankton in the water column,' suggesting behavioural flexibility: when phyto- or zooplankton blooms occur in the open water column above the reef, Maylandia mbenjii joins other mbuna species in opportunistic midwater feeding. This dual feeding mode — scraping the rock surface at close range and then rising to snatch drifting particles — appears common in species that defend reef-top territories where the current sweeps food past them. In the aquarium, the species accepts a wide range of prepared foods, though its gut anatomy and mucosal tolerance are those of a herbivore; high-protein diets (especially mammalian-derived ingredients) predispose Malawi mbuna to the osmotic gut pathology collectively termed 'Malawi bloat,' and this species is not exempt.

Mating

Like all Lake Malawi mbuna, Maylandia mbenjii is polygynandrous: territorial males court and spawn with multiple females, and females may mate with more than one male. The CRC lists the mating system as polygynandrous. Social structure at Mbenji follows the standard mbuna pattern: reproductively active males hold defined territories centred on a cave or crevice among medium to large boulders, which they defend vigorously against rival males and against similarly coloured neighbours. The male's territory serves both as a feeding station and as a spawning site. Non-territorial males, females, and juveniles drift through the habitat in loose aggregations, foraging over the reef surface and in the water column. Females in breeding condition are attracted to the territory by the male's intensified colour and courtship displays — quivering, leading, and fin-spreading — and spawning takes place inside the male's cave. Males recognise OB individuals as conspecifics and direct the same territorial aggression toward them as toward normally coloured rivals, which has been noted as a point of interest for students of cichlid colour-signal evolution: at Mbenji, where no other large, unbarred Maylandia species co-occurs, the fish can apparently use colour alone for species recognition without the risk of misidentifying a congener.

Breeding

Spawning follows the egg-spot fertilization mechanism that is the hallmark of Lake Malawi haplochromines. The female lays a small batch of eggs on the substrate inside the male's cave; she immediately mouths them into her buccal cavity, then snaps at the egg-like ocelli on the male's anal fin, drawing in milt as she does so — fertilization is buccal, not external. This sequence repeats until the clutch is complete, and the female then withdraws to brood alone among the rocks, neither feeding nor defending territory for the incubation period. The Cichlid Room Companion categorizes the species as a maternal mouthbrooder, consistent with all other Maylandia species.

From aquarium accounts, including Borstein's notes, eggs are small and hatch at around 22 days at typical aquarium temperatures. Free-swimming fry are small but vigorous; they accept baby brine shrimp immediately and grow relatively fast. Clutch size has not been formally published for this species; by comparison with closely related Maylandia species of similar body size, broods of roughly 20–50 fry per spawning are consistent with aquarium reports, though the original description's meristic focus provides no fecundity data. This figure should be treated as genus-typical rather than a species-specific measurement, and is flagged as such. Females of this species are described as 'good holders' by experienced keepers — they carry broods to term reliably even without being stripped.

Male colour-up in juveniles occurs within 7 months in rearing tanks, and young fish show attractive patterning even at small size, making them straightforward to sex and sort before placing in a display aquarium.

In the aquarium

Maylandia mbenjii is a genuine Lake Malawi mbuna, and its aquarium requirements are those of a rock-dwelling cichlid from hard, alkaline water — no compromises. The minimum recommended tank footprint for a colony of one male and three or four females is 47 in in length, with longer tanks strongly preferred: 59–71 in gives territorial males enough room to establish sight-line-breaking territories and reduces sustained aggression against females. Depth and height matter less than floor length and width. The substrate should be inert — coral sand, crushed aragonite, or fine quartz — topped with a deep rockwork structure of limestone, slate, or lava rock arranged into caves, crevices, and open swimming lanes. This mirrors the boulder-reef biotope at Mbenji Island, provides retreat sites for harassed females, and contributes to buffering capacity. Live plants are not appropriate: the species comes from a wave-washed rocky reef with essentially no rooted macrophytes, and most plants cannot tolerate Lake Malawi's chemistry.

Water parameters must match the lake's southern rocky shallows: temperature 75–81 °F, pH 7.8–8.6, total hardness typically 10–20 °dH (general), and carbonate hardness 8–14 °dKH. These are the values most municipal tap water in hard-water areas approaches, and in many regions Lake Malawi conditions require little more than a coral-sand substrate, a regular partial water change, and avoidance of buffering the tank down toward neutral. For keepers on soft, acidic source water, reconstitution with a cichlid-buffer salt or sodium bicarbonate / magnesium sulphate blend is straightforward. High dissolved oxygen is important: in the lake, wave action oxygenates the shallows around the clock, and a powerhead or wavemaker at one end of the tank (pointed along the back wall) replicates this while reducing dead spots where mulm accumulates.

Tankmate selection requires care. Within the mbuna community, Maylandia mbenjii can be kept alongside Lake Malawi rock dwellers of different genera and markedly different colouration — Labidochromis caeruleus (electric yellows), Iodotropheus sprengerae (rusty cichlid), Cynotilapia afra morphs, or Pseudotropheus acei are commonly used combinations — as long as the tank is large enough and the rock structure complex enough to break lines of sight. The rule that trips up most keepers is this: Maylandia mbenjii is a member of the zebra complex and hybridises readily with other Maylandia (Metriaclima) species, including Maylandia callainos, Maylandia greshakei, and Maylandia lombardoi. Mixing two zebra-complex species is a well-documented source of hybrid broods even in large tanks; if maintaining colony purity matters — and for this single-island endemic it should — no other Maylandia or Metriaclima should share the aquarium. Non-mbuna Lake Malawi cichlids, particularly the more open-water utaka (Copadichromis spp.), are generally poor tankmates: the mbuna's territorial aggression is continuous, and utaka need open swimming space rather than rockwork refuges.

Diet is the most commonly mismanaged aspect of mbuna keeping, and Maylandia mbenjii is no exception. As an aufwuchs grazer its digestive system is adapted for a low-protein, high-fibre diet of algae, diatoms, and associated microorganisms. High-protein foods — especially those containing mammalian or poultry derivatives — are poorly metabolised and predispose the fish to a constellation of osmotic and inflammatory gut pathologies collectively labelled 'Malawi bloat': rapid abdominal distension, loss of buoyancy control, and, if untreated, swift death. The correct staple diet is a quality spirulina-based pellet or flake, supplemented with spirulina wafers, dried or blanched vegetable matter (courgette, spinach), and occasional live or frozen invertebrates (daphnia, brine shrimp) as treats rather than staples. Bloodworms and beefheart should be withheld entirely. Feeding small amounts twice daily rather than a single large meal keeps the gut transit time reasonable and the water column cleaner.

Overall difficulty is moderate: the species is less sensitive than many wild-collected East African cichlids, accepts prepared foods readily, and breeds without intervention in a properly set-up tank. The main challenges are maintaining correct water chemistry long-term, managing male aggression (a single male kept in a too-small tank with too few females can kill females outright; a 1:3 or 1:4 male-to-female ratio is the standard guidance), and avoiding hybridisation. Maylandia mbenjii is less commonly found in the trade than Maylandia callainos (cobalt blue zebra) or Maylandia lombardoi (kennyi), and a keeper seeking true, locality-correct Mbenji Island stock should source fish from specialist mbuna breeders who document origin — unrecorded 'red-top cobalt' fish from chain retail often represent hybrids or farmed mixtures of several zebra-complex morphs. When sourced clean, the species is rewarding: males in full breeding colour are vivid, behavioural interactions around the rock caves are continuously interesting, and the maternal mouthbrooding cycle — recognisable by the female's distended buccal pouch and withdrawal from feeding — plays out reliably without any special intervention from the keeper.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Maylandia mbenjii (listed under Metriaclima mbenjii) as Least Concern, in an assessment by Ad Konings dated 20 June 2018 (version 2025-2). This reversed two earlier assessments of Vulnerable (2006 and 2017). The reasoning in the 2018 assessment is direct: although the species is confined to Mbenji Island and thus technically qualifies for a threatened category under the area criteria of Criterion B, four decades of continuous collection for the ornamental trade had not, by 2018, produced any measurable population decline. The species is common at most sites within its range, and population trend is listed as stable. Threats identified are collection for the aquarium trade (ongoing) and sedimentation and agricultural runoff (rated as future/potential rather than current).

The trade angle is worth noting: this fish is exported under the names 'Red Top Cobalt Mbenji' and 'Red Top Cobalt Zebra' and is a genuine staple of the Lake Malawi aquarium trade; it has been collected commercially since at least the 1980s. That four decades of harvest have left wild populations intact is, as the IUCN assessment observes, meaningful evidence that collection is not a current threat — though it also reflects that Mbenji Island sits within a well-functioning traditional fisheries management regime that has protected the island's resources since the 1950s under the authority of the Makanjira chieftaincy. Mongabay's 2024 reporting documents how that system — seasonal closure of the island's waters during the breeding season, strict regulation of gear and conduct, and enforcement through traditional authority — has kept fish stocks at Mbenji measurably larger and more abundant than in government-managed waters elsewhere on the lake. The cichlid community at Mbenji is an incidental beneficiary of a management system designed primarily for food fish.

At the basin level, however, Lake Malawi faces serious and accelerating pressure. The basin review by Chavula et al. (2023, Journal of Great Lakes Research 49(6):102241) documents the full picture: decades of overfishing have driven chambo (Oreochromis spp.) to near-collapse in the open lake, sediment and nutrient loading from eroded catchments is increasing, climate warming has raised shallow-water temperatures, reduced thermal stratification mixing cycles, and diminished productivity, and invasive species risk is rising. For Maylandia mbenjii specifically, the most acute threat would be sedimentation smothering its aufwuchs-bearing rocky substrate — precisely the threat the IUCN assessment identifies as future. For now the fish is, as the assessment concludes, secure; but it inhabits a lake under mounting strain, and its single-site endemic distribution means there is no fallback population elsewhere in Malawi should conditions at Mbenji deteriorate.
