Hard, alkaline, well-buffered water of the kind that defines Lake Malawi — stability matters more than chasing a single number.

Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Hybridization watchi

Maylandia ngarae is an unusual mbuna: a shell-dwelling member of a famously rock-bound genus, endemic to the sandy shallows near Ngara in the north-west of Lake Malawi. Long known to hobbyists as Maylandia sp. 'lanisticola north,' it was formally described in 2021 alongside its near-twin Maylandia gallireyae, and lives over open sand between empty shells of the large Lanistes snail, into which it bolts when threatened. Stockier than the Tanganyikan shell-dwellers it superficially recalls, it forages algae from the scattered rocks and shells around its sandy ground.

Taxonomy & naming

Maylandia ngarae was described in 2021 by Taylor A. Miller, Adrianus F. Konings and Jay R. Stauffer Jr., in 'Descriptions of two new shell-dwelling species of Metriaclima (Cichlidae) from Lake Malaŵi, Africa,' published in Zootaxa (volume 5052, pages 419–432). The type specimens were collected at Ngara, on the north-western shore, by Stuart Grant's team in January 2000, and the paper named two shell-dwellers together — ngarae and the very similar Maylandia gallireyae. In the hobby the fish had circulated for years as Maylandia (or Metriaclima) sp. 'lanisticola north,' a northern counterpart to the long-known shell-dweller Maylandia lanisticola.

The genus name carries a long-running nomenclatural dispute. The species was described in Metriaclima, the genus Stauffer and colleagues coined in 1997 (Greek for 'moderately sloping,' for the head profile). But Maylandia — named in 1984 by Meyer, Riehl and Zetzsche for the German aquarist and author Hans-Joachim Mayland — is the older name and the senior synonym under the priority rule. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, this atlas's authority for valid names, lists the fish as valid under Maylandia ngarae and treats Metriaclima as a synonym; that is the usage here. The epithet is a toponym for Ngara, the type locality. Diagnostically, ngarae has a moderately sloped vomer with a swollen rostral tip, bicuspid anterior teeth, a black submarginal band in the dorsal and anal fins, and five or fewer flank bars — the last separating it from most congeners, while head proportions and colour separate it from gallireyae.

Morphology

Maylandia ngarae is a small, stocky mbuna, reaching about 3 in standard length; the holotype measured roughly 2.5 in SL, and females are noticeably smaller than males. Despite living like a Tanganyikan shell-dweller, it is built quite differently — distinctly stockier than the slim ostracophils of that lake — a reminder that it is a true Malawi mbuna that has taken up the shell habit rather than a convergent miniature.

In an unusual twist for the genus, the sexes are similar in colour: males retain the female-like barred pattern rather than developing the vivid blue breeding dress of most Maylandia. Both sexes show a brownish, melanic pattern of variable intensity, a black submarginal band in the dorsal and anal fins, and four to five vertical bars beneath the dorsal. This muted, cryptic coloration suits a fish that spends its life over open sand, where conspicuous colour would attract predators; the body has the moderately sloped head and bicuspid outer-row teeth that define the genus.

Habitat

Maylandia ngarae is a Lake Malawi endemic of the north-western shore, known from submerged reefs and sandy flats near Ngara, Mdoka, Chesese and Kaporo in Malawian waters. Its habitat sets it apart from the rest of the genus: rather than clinging to rock faces, it lives over open sand at depths of roughly 10 to 25 metres, scattered with the empty shells of the large endemic apple snail Lanistes nyassanus. The fish shelters in these shells and bolts into them when threatened — the defining behaviour of a shell-dweller, or ostracophil. It only occasionally ventures into the intermediate (rock-and-sand) zone and is rare on true rock.

The chemical setting is the standard Lake Malawi envelope: an ancient, strongly buffered rift lake with surface waters around 75–82 °F, alkaline pH of roughly 7.7–8.6, and moderate hardness. The sandy, shell-strewn habitat it depends on is a specific and somewhat fragile microhabitat, tied to the presence of dead Lanistes shells.

Feeding

Although it lives over sand, Maylandia ngarae feeds in a recognisably mbuna way. It grazes algae from the scattered rocks and from the surfaces of the shells around its territory, and it sifts the sand for diatoms and small invertebrates — a flexible, opportunistic foraging style that suits a fish whose food is patchily distributed across an open sandy ground rather than concentrated on a continuous algal reef. It retains the genus's bicuspid outer teeth, well suited to combing loose material from hard surfaces.

The practical consequence for aquarists is the familiar one for aufwuchs-grazing mbuna: a gut adapted to algae and small invertebrates that copes poorly with rich, high-protein animal foods, and a susceptibility to 'Malawi bloat.' A varied diet weighted toward spirulina and vegetable matter, with only sparing use of richer foods, suits the species best.

Mating

Breeding behaviour in Maylandia ngarae is organised around shells rather than caves. Males are polygamous and territorial, defending a patch of sand around one or more Lanistes shells and excluding rival males, while females and non-breeding fish are largely solitary over the open bottom. Because males keep the female-like barred coloration rather than flashing bright breeding colour, courtship is less about visual spectacle than in the showy rock Maylandia and more about the male's control of a good shell site.

No detailed courtship study has been published, but the behaviour fits the maternal-mouthbrooder template: the male leads a receptive female to his defended shell ground and spawns there, with the shells serving both as the focus of the territory and as refuge. Mate choice is presumed to be based on the male's vigour and the quality of the shell patch he holds.

Breeding

Maylandia ngarae is a maternal mouthbrooder, like all members of its genus. Spawning follows the classic mbuna sequence — the female takes the eggs into her mouth and fertilisation occurs there as she noses at the male's anal-fin egg-spots — but it is centred on the male's shell territory rather than a rock cave. The female then broods the eggs and larvae buccally for roughly three weeks before releasing the fry, and may use a shell as a refuge during this period.

Fecundity is low, as is typical of shell-dwellers: aquarium accounts report only about three to six fry per spawning, far fewer than the larger broods of rock mbuna. Notably, females are reported to continue feeding during incubation, unusual among Malawi mouthbrooders and consistent with the modest clutch. In the aquarium the species breeds readily given a sandy floor well supplied with empty snail or escargot shells; the few fry are large and self-sufficient, and the low brood size makes patience the main requirement for building up a group.

In the aquarium

Maylandia ngarae is a specialist's fish with a real following among keepers of Malawi oddities, traded both under its scientific name and its old hobby tag 'lanisticola north.' Its appeal is behavioural rather than chromatic — a Malawi cichlid that lives and breeds in snail shells, a habit far more associated with Lake Tanganyika — and it is genuinely endearing to watch as fish dart in and out of their shells.

A tank of around 55 US gal or more suits a group of one male with several females. The single non-negotiable is the aquascape: a deep bed of fine sand liberally scattered with empty shells (Lanistes in the wild, but escargot or large garden-snail shells serve in captivity), with some rockwork for additional refuge. Water should be hard and alkaline in the Lake Malawi mould — pH roughly 7.8–8.6, temperature 75–82 °F, moderate to hard general hardness — kept stable with a crushed-coral or aragonite substrate, strong filtration and regular water changes.

Males defend their shells aggressively against rivals, so keep a single male, or provide a large footprint with many shells if attempting more. The species mixes well with peaceful Lake Malawi cichlids and Aulonocara, but avoid keeping multiple ngarae males together in a small tank. Diet should be weighted toward spirulina and vegetable matter to respect the grazing gut and avoid bloat, with sparing use of brine shrimp, krill and similar richer foods.

Conservation

Maylandia ngarae has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries no Red List status, which is expected for a species only formally described in 2021 — well after the 2018 Lake Malawi assessments, and previously catalogued only informally as Maylandia sp. 'lanisticola north.' This is recorded here honestly as Not Evaluated rather than inferred.

Its conservation interest is easy to state. It is a narrow-range, north-western-shore endemic with a specialised dependence on a single microhabitat — open sand strewn with dead Lanistes shells — which ties its fate to the abundance of those shells and the integrity of its sandy shallows. Shell-dwellers are inherently vulnerable to any disturbance of that substrate, whether from sedimentation, dredging, or collection pressure on a fish prized by hobbyists for its unusual habits. These concerns sit within Lake Malawi's broader trajectory — basin-scale reviews such as Chavula et al. (2023) in the Journal of Great Lakes Research document growing fishing pressure, sediment and nutrient loading, and climate-driven warming that weakens the lake's seasonal mixing. A formal assessment of ngarae under its new name would be a sensible step, given its restricted range and specialised needs.
