Hard, alkaline, well-buffered water of the kind that defines Lake Malawi — stability matters more than chasing a single number.

Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Hybridization watchi

Mylochromis chekopae is a small, oblique-striped haplochromine cichlid endemic to Lake Malawi, described in 2001 from trawl catches off the village of Chekopa in the lake's southeastern arm. Unlike most high-scale-count Mylochromis, which carry a broken, blotchy flank stripe, chekopae and its sister species Mylochromis ensatus wear a clean, continuous oblique band from nape to tail. It is a fish of shallow sandy shores that feeds on plankton and algae, and in the shallower part of its range it is reported to be the single most abundant cichlid present.

Taxonomy & naming

Mylochromis chekopae was described by George F. Turner and J. D. Howarth in 2001, in 'Description of two new species of Mylochromis (Teleostei: Cichlidae) from Lake Malawi, Africa' (Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters 12(3): 205–212). The same paper introduced its close relative Mylochromis ensatus. The holotype, BMNH 1996.10.14.98 (Natural History Museum, London), was trawled off Chekopa on the eastern shore of the southeastern arm of Lake Malawi, at 13°53′S, 35°07′E, at a depth of about 66 ft; a series of paratypes (BMNH 1996.10.14.99–120) came from the same area.

The authors diagnosed both new species against the rest of the genus by their relatively high lateral-line scale counts combined with a continuous oblique stripe running unbroken from the nape to the caudal peduncle — a contrast with most other high-scale-count Mylochromis, in which that stripe is discontinuous and blotchy. Mylochromis chekopae was separated from Mylochromis ensatus and Mylochromis formosus by its relatively deeper body and greater interorbital width, and from Mylochromis melanonotus by its body form and by a group of enlarged blunt teeth in the centre of the lower pharyngeal bone (Mylochromis melanonotus has only small pharyngeal teeth).

The genus Mylochromis Regan, 1920 is the valid name for this group of oblique-striped sand-haps; the alternative Maravichromis Eccles & Trewavas, 1989, under which many congeners were once placed, was shown by Derijst and Snoeks (1992) to be a junior synonym. The species is accepted as Mylochromis chekopae Turner & Howarth, 2001 in the Catalog of Fishes and FishBase. The epithet chekopae is a toponym honouring the trawl station at Chekopa where the type series was caught.

Morphology

Mylochromis chekopae is a small cichlid: FishBase records a maximum of about 5 in standard length, and the paratype series ran roughly 4–4.5 in SL. It is among the more modestly sized members of the genus, smaller than its slender sister species Mylochromis ensatus.

Within the genus its diagnosis rests on a combination of proportions and pattern. Relative to Mylochromis ensatus and Mylochromis formosus it has a deeper body and a wider interorbital space; relative to Mylochromis melanonotus it differs in overall body form and, crucially, in carrying a cluster of enlarged, blunt teeth in the centre of the lower pharyngeal bone — a moderate pharyngeal thickening, short of the heavy molariform mill of the dedicated snail-crushers but more developed than the all-small dentition of Mylochromis melanonotus.

The colour pattern is the genus signature in its cleaner form: a prominent, continuous dark oblique stripe sweeping from the nape down and back across the flank to the caudal peduncle, against a pale silvery-beige ground. The continuity of that stripe — unbroken rather than broken into a row of blotches — is one of the features Turner and Howarth used to set chekopae and ensatus apart from most other high-scale-count Mylochromis. As is usual in the genus, breeding males are expected to develop a brighter nuptial sheen while females and non-breeding fish stay cryptically pale; fine details of dimorphism are not elaborated for this species.

Habitat

Mylochromis chekopae is endemic to Lake Malawi, the great rift lake shared by Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania, and within it is known from the southern part of the lake — the type material and the bulk of records come from the southeastern arm. It is a fish of shallow sandy shores, part of the open-sand intermediate-zone fauna rather than the rocky mbuna community.

FishBase gives a depth range of roughly 59–148 ft, with the type series trawled at about 66 ft. In the shallower part of that range the species is reported to be the most abundant cichlid present — a notable density for a Malawi hap and an indication that, locally, it is an ecologically significant component of the sandy-shore community. The water it lives in is the typical Lake Malawi envelope: warm (about 75–82 °F), strongly alkaline (pH roughly 7.7–8.6) and hard, with high carbonate content. As a demersal, non-migratory species it stays close to the sandy bottom of its depth band.

Feeding

Mylochromis chekopae has a notably un-Mylochromis-like diet for the genus. FishBase records it feeding on cladocerans, copepods and algae — that is, on small planktonic crustaceans and plant material — and assigns it a low trophic level of about 3.0, the lowest among the species treated here and consistent with a micro-invertebrate-and-algae feeder rather than a predator of larger benthic prey.

This is a softer, more planktivore-leaning diet than the snail-crushing or sand-sifting habits seen elsewhere in the genus. The cluster of enlarged blunt pharyngeal teeth noted in its description gives it some capacity to process firmer items, but the recorded gut contents point to a fish that grazes algae and gleans small zooplankton from the water and substrate over its sandy habitat. The high local abundance of the species in shallow water fits an animal exploiting an abundant, low-trophic-level food base rather than a specialised, patchy resource.

Mating

As a Lake Malawi haplochromine, Mylochromis chekopae is a polygynous maternal mouthbrooder with no lasting pair bond. The expected mating system is the lek-like pattern universal in the group: dominant males hold temporary territories on the sandy bottom and court a succession of visiting females, each of which chooses among several males before spawning.

Courtship runs on the haplochromine egg-spot mechanism — the male flashes his anal fin, whose egg-mimicking spots lure the female to mouth at them just as she gathers her own eggs, fertilising the clutch in her buccal cavity. Breeding males of the genus take on brighter colours and defend their patch; outside breeding the sexes are similar and subdued. No species-specific courtship study has been published for chekopae, so this account follows the well-established genus and lake pattern.

Breeding

Reproduction is maternal mouthbrooding in the standard haplochromine manner. The female spawns over a male's sandy territory, immediately takes the fertilised eggs into her mouth, and broods them through egg and larval stages — fasting the while — before releasing free-swimming fry. There is no male care and no parental care after the fry are released.

No clutch sizes or incubation timings have been published for Mylochromis chekopae. It is a small fish (to about 4.5 in SL, with females typically smaller still), so broods are likely small — a few dozen eggs at most, by analogy with similarly sized mouthbrooding relatives — but that figure is inferred from genus-typical fecundity, not measured for this species. Incubation in comparable lake haps runs two to three weeks, and generation length across the flock is generally estimated at two to three years.

In the aquarium

Mylochromis chekopae is not a hobby fish. It is a small, recently described, plankton-and-algae-feeding sand-dweller known mainly from trawl surveys; it does not feature in the ornamental trade and there is no established body of keeping or breeding experience for it. The notes here are extrapolated from its ecology and from the care of comparable Malawi sand-haps, and should be read as such.

If it were ever maintained, the requirements would be those of a small intermediate-zone hap: a tank with a wide, open footprint, a deep bed of fine sand, and only modest rockwork for visual breaks. Water must sit in the Lake Malawi range — pH about 7.8–8.6, temperature 75–82 °F, moderately hard to hard — with strong filtration and regular partial water changes. Given its natural diet of small plankton and algae, a varied feeding regime emphasising small particulate foods, a quality Malawi vegetable-inclusive pellet, and frozen items such as cyclops or daphnia would be more appropriate than a heavy meaty diet; the rich, protein-heavy foods linked to 'Malawi bloat' are best limited. Tankmates should be peaceful, similarly small haplochromines and peacocks rather than aggressive mbuna, which would dominate so small and unassuming a fish. In practice this is a species of scientific interest, and any aquarium guidance is a reasoned starting point rather than a tested protocol.

Conservation

Mylochromis chekopae has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and currently carries no Red List category; its status is therefore best stated honestly as Not Evaluated. Described only in 2001 and known from a limited part of the lake, it has not been through a formal assessment.

Some reassurance comes from its reported local abundance: in the shallower part of its range chekopae is said to be the most abundant cichlid present, which suggests a healthy population at least where it has been sampled, and it occupies the southeastern-arm waters that fall partly within the Lake Malawi National Park. Against that, the lake as a whole is under real and increasing pressure. The basin review by Chavula and colleagues (2023, Journal of Great Lakes Research) documents warming surface waters, strengthening stratification that limits nutrient mixing, heavy sediment and nutrient inflow from deforested catchments, and over-fishing that has collapsed the commercial chambo fishery. For a shallow-water, plankton-and-algae-feeding sand species, the most relevant concerns are sediment loading that degrades the sandy-shore habitat and any decline in the lake's productivity that would reduce its planktonic food base. It carries no fishery or CITES interest of its own; catchment management and overall lake health are the meaningful long-term factors.
