Taxonomy & naming
Mylochromis ensatus was described by George F. Turner and J. D. Howarth in 2001, in the same paper that introduced Mylochromis chekopae — 'Description of two new species of Mylochromis (Teleostei: Cichlidae) from Lake Malawi, Africa' (Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters 12(3): 205–212). Both new species came from shallow sandy shores in the southeastern arm of the lake.
Turner and Howarth set the two apart from most other Mylochromis by a combination of high lateral-line scale counts and a continuous (rather than discontinuous, blotchy) oblique stripe. Within that pair, Mylochromis ensatus was diagnosed as having a markedly more slender body than any other known Mylochromis — the trait that gives it its name — and it was further separated from Mylochromis chekopae and Mylochromis formosus, both of which are deeper-bodied with a greater interorbital width. Its slender, shallow build and pointed head are the immediate field marks.
The valid genus is Mylochromis Regan, 1920; the once-used Maravichromis Eccles & Trewavas, 1989 is a junior synonym (Derijst & Snoeks, 1992). The species is accepted as Mylochromis ensatus Turner & Howarth, 2001 in the Catalog of Fishes and FishBase. The epithet ensatus is Latin for 'shaped like a two-edged sword,' chosen for the shallow, straight, elongate body and acutely pointed head.
Morphology
Mylochromis ensatus is the most slender member of its genus — that is its defining and diagnostic feature. FishBase records a maximum of about 8 in standard length, making it appreciably larger than its more compact sister species Mylochromis chekopae, but its proportions are what stand out: a shallow, straight, elongate body and an acutely pointed head, the whole giving the blade-like profile that the name ensatus ('sword-bearing') describes. Against Mylochromis chekopae and Mylochromis formosus, both deeper-bodied with wider interorbital spaces, ensatus is the lean, pointed outlier.
Its colour pattern is the cleaner form of the genus signature: a prominent, continuous dark oblique stripe running from the nape down and back to the caudal peduncle, unbroken rather than broken into the row of blotches seen in most high-scale-count Mylochromis. The ground colour is the usual subdued silvery-beige. As in the genus generally, breeding males are expected to assume a brighter nuptial sheen while females and non-breeding fish remain cryptically pale; the fine details of sexual dimorphism are not elaborated for this species. The lower pharyngeal dentition is of the ordinary, non-molariform type rather than the heavy crushing mill of the snail-specialist Mylochromis, consistent with its place among the generalist sand-foragers.
Habitat
Mylochromis ensatus is endemic to Lake Malawi and, on present knowledge, known only from the southeastern arm of the lake. It is a fish of shallow sandy shores — part of the open-sand intermediate-zone fauna rather than the rocky reefs — and is described as a rare species, encountered far less often than the abundant Mylochromis chekopae that shares its habitat.
FishBase gives a typical depth range of about 49–75 ft. The water is the standard Lake Malawi envelope: warm (about 75–82 °F), hard and strongly alkaline (pH roughly 7.7–8.6), with high carbonate content. As a demersal species it stays close to the sandy bottom of its depth band, foraging over the open substrate of the southeastern arm. Its apparent restriction to that one part of the lake, combined with its reported rarity, makes it among the more narrowly known of the oblique-striped sand-haps.
Feeding
Mylochromis ensatus is a benthic invertivore of the sandy shore. FishBase places it at a trophic level of about 3.6 — derived from its size and the diets of its nearest relatives — and notes that it feeds on invertebrates found in sandy substrates. Lacking the molariform pharyngeal mill of the snail-crushing Mylochromis, it takes the soft-bodied and lightly armoured invertebrates of the sand rather than hard-shelled prey.
This fits the larger, non-specialised wing of the genus: opportunistic sand-foraging invertivores that glean and sift small benthic animals from the substrate. The slender, pointed build of ensatus may suit a more precise, picking style of foraging over the open sand, but no dedicated gut-content study has been published for the species, so the diet described here rests on the FishBase trophic data and the feeding ecology of its close relatives rather than on direct observation of ensatus itself.
Mating
As a Lake Malawi haplochromine, Mylochromis ensatus is a polygynous maternal mouthbrooder with no lasting pair bond. The expected system is the lek-like pattern universal in the group: dominant males hold temporary territories on the sandy bottom and court a succession of visiting females, each choosing among several males before spawning.
Courtship runs on the haplochromine egg-spot mechanism — the male displays his anal fin, whose egg-mimicking spots draw the female to mouth at them just as she gathers her own eggs, fertilising the clutch in her buccal cavity. Breeding males of the genus take on brighter colours and defend their patch, while outside breeding the sexes are similar and subdued. No species-specific courtship study has been published for ensatus; this account follows the genus and lake pattern.
Breeding
Reproduction is maternal mouthbrooding in the standard haplochromine manner. The female spawns over a male's sandy territory, takes the fertilised eggs into her mouth at once, and broods them through egg and larval development — fasting throughout — before releasing free-swimming fry. There is no male parental care and no care after the fry disperse.
No clutch sizes or developmental timings have been published for Mylochromis ensatus. It is a moderately large hap (to about 8 in SL), so broods may be somewhat larger than in the smaller congeners, but any specific figure would be an inference from genus-typical fecundity rather than a measured datum for this species. Incubation in comparable lake haps lasts two to three weeks, and generation length across the flock is generally estimated at two to three years.
In the aquarium
Mylochromis ensatus is not a hobby fish. It is a rare, recently described sand-dweller known only from the southeastern arm of Lake Malawi and from museum and survey material; it does not appear in the ornamental trade, and there is no established record of it being kept or bred. The notes here are extrapolated from its habitat and from the care of comparable sand-dwelling Malawi haps, and should be read as such.
If it were ever maintained, it would call for the standard large sand-hap setup: a tank with a wide, open footprint to suit an elongate, active swimmer, a deep bed of fine sand for natural foraging, and only modest rockwork for visual structure. Water must match the lake — pH about 7.8–8.6, temperature 75–82 °F, moderately hard to hard — with strong filtration and regular partial water changes. A varied diet built on a quality Malawi pellet and supplemented with small frozen or live invertebrates would suit a sand invertivore of this kind; the rich meaty diets linked to 'Malawi bloat' should be limited. Tankmates should be peaceful-to-moderate haplochromines and peacocks of similar size rather than aggressive mbuna, and one male per tank avoids chronic territorial conflict. As with its relatives, this is a species of scientific rather than aquarium interest, and any care guidance is a reasoned starting framework rather than a tested protocol.
Conservation
Mylochromis ensatus has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and currently carries no Red List category, so its status is honestly Not Evaluated. Described only in 2001 and known from a single part of the lake, it has not been through a formal assessment.
Its conservation profile is worth flagging nonetheless. The species is reported as rare and, on current knowledge, restricted to the southeastern arm — a combination (narrow range plus low abundance) that makes a fish inherently more sensitive to local habitat change than a widespread, common one. The southeastern arm falls partly within the Lake Malawi National Park, which offers some protection. Against that, the lake as a whole is under documented stress: Chavula and colleagues (2023, Journal of Great Lakes Research) describe rising surface temperatures, strengthening stratification that suppresses nutrient mixing, heavy sediment and nutrient loading from deforested catchments, and over-fishing that has collapsed the chambo fishery. For a shallow-water sand-dwelling invertivore, sediment loading that degrades the sandy-shore microhabitat and any basin-wide decline in invertebrate productivity are the most directly relevant pressures. The species carries no fishery or CITES interest of its own; until it is surveyed more widely and formally assessed, it is best regarded as a rare, narrow-range endemic of uncertain status.
