Taxonomy & naming
Ethelwynn Trewavas described this fish in 1935 as Haplochromis chrysogaster, based on syntypes collected from the southwest arm of Lake Malawi by Mr C. Christy (natural-history collector for the Natural History Museum, London; syntypes NHMUK 1935.6.14.1640–1642). The southwest arm is the southernmost finger of the lake, in present-day Malawi, in the vicinity of what is now Mangochi. Over subsequent decades the species was shuttled through the temporary holding genera that marked African cichlid taxonomy's reorganisation: it passed through Cyrtocara and Otopharynx as systematists worked to sort the massive haplochromine assemblage. In 1989 David H. Eccles and Trewavas herself erected the monotypic genus Naevochromis specifically for this species in their revision of the Lake Malawi haplochromines, anchoring it on distinctive morphological characters — the three-spot melanic pattern, the thick chin and gum-embedded teeth — that set it apart from all other Malawi genera. The genus has remained monotypic ever since; Naevochromis chrysogaster is its one and only species. It sits within the tribe Haplochromini of subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae. Ad Konings groups it informally with the 'thick-chinned predators' of the lake, a functional assemblage rather than a formal clade, that includes unrelated genera sharing a convergent heavy-jawed build used for paedophagy. In the hobby it is occasionally sold under the vernacular 'Haplochromis Jack Dempsey', a Konings-era trade name that has never become standardised and is better treated as a curiosity of the trade than a genuine common name.
Morphology
Naevochromis chrysogaster is a large, moderately deep-bodied cichlid. Maximum recorded total length is 7 in (FishBase; Maréchal 1991 in CLOFFA), though experienced keepers report males reaching 8.5–9 in in aquaria under good husbandry. Females are substantially smaller, typically 5–6 in. The diagnostic external feature is the chin: the lower jaw is notably robust and projects beyond the upper jaw, giving the head a thick-chinned, almost bulldoggish profile. The teeth, unusual among Malawi cichlids, are entirely embedded in the gum tissue rather than sitting exposed in the jaw. These characters — thick chin, buried teeth, relatively small mouth — are shared convergently by other Lake Malawi paedophages and are thought to reflect the mechanics of suction-and-swallow feeding on soft larvae. The melanin pattern on the flank is defined by three spots: a suprapectoral spot on the upper lateral line, a supraanal spot between the two lateral lines, and a precaudal spot just before the caudal peduncle; occasional individuals lack the middle spot, and in some populations it can elongate into a diagonal stripe. During spawning both sexes lose their black markings. Sexual dimorphism is pronounced. Breeding males develop a vivid blue face with green, red, and yellow metallic speckles across the flanks and dorsal fin (the dorsal is edged white and red), and an anal fin bearing multiple egg-spots; the ventral region shows the brassy-gold color that gave the species its name. Non-breeding males and females are more subdued — a tan or grey base, sometimes with a brassy-yellow wash, carrying the variable stripe or blotch pattern. Females and juveniles at some localities show a distinctive diagonal line that can shift to two or three lateral blotches depending on the fish's state. This polymorphism of the flank pattern within and between populations, combined with the fact that markings disappear at spawning, makes the species visually variable enough to confuse novice aquarists.
Habitat
The species is endemic to Lake Malawi — it occurs nowhere else — and has been recorded from suitable habitats around the entire lake, from Tanzania in the north through Mozambique on the eastern shore to Malawi in the south and west. Confirmed collection localities include the type locality in the southwest arm, Chizumulu Island and Likoma Island in the central basin, Maingano Island and Taiwan Reef (documented by malawi.si), Nkhata Bay on the northwest shore, Metangula on the Mozambican coast, and points along the eastern coast. Ecologically it is associated with the intermediate zone — the transition between purely rocky biotope and open sand — and is seen both over flat rubble-strewn substrate and at the edge of rocky reefs. It is not a strict rock dweller in the mbuna sense: it moves across rock-sand borders, following mouthbrooding cichlids wherever they go. FishBase classifies it as demersal. No published species-specific depth survey has been conducted; habitat-typical observations place it from the shallows down to around 131 ft, consistent with the depth range at which mouthbrooding mbuna and other cichlid hosts concentrate in the intermediate zone. Lake Malawi's rocky-shore waters are warm (75–79 °F seasonally, occasionally higher at the surface in summer), highly alkaline, and hard: the FishBase ranges for the species are pH 7.5–8.3 and dH 5–30, consistent with the lake-wide limnological profiles.
Feeding
The feeding biology of Naevochromis chrysogaster sits well outside the mainstream for a Lake Malawi haplochromine. FishBase records its diet explicitly as cichlid fry and larvae, and assigns it a trophic level of 4.0, placing it in the same range as genuine piscivores. It is a paedophage. The mechanics are those documented for a small guild of convergent paedophages in the lake: the fish is thought to ram or butt a mouthbrooding female to make her release some or all of her developing brood, which the chrysogaster then inhales through suction. The morphological tools for this — the thick, projecting chin that delivers the impact and cushions the recoil, and the teeth fully embedded in swollen gum pads that present a smooth striking surface and may improve suction efficiency — link the behavior directly to the skull anatomy. Konings, Wisor, and Stauffer (2021) used microcomputed tomography on Lake Malawi cichlids to formally connect observed jaw morphologies with feeding behaviors, with paedophages featuring among the clearest morphology-behavior links in the whole assemblage; Naevochromis fits squarely into that picture. Malawi.si notes that individuals have been observed following mouthbrooding females, though confirmed attacks were not recorded in all observations, and cautions that prey is obtained by suction. In the aquarium the species accepts virtually any meaty food — cichlid sticks, pellets, frozen bloodworms and brine shrimp — without any hint of dietary fussiness, which is often noted as a contrast to the behavioral drama of its natural ecology.
Mating
Breeding males are territorial and comparatively conspicuous in their nuptial dress — the blue face and metallic-speckled flanks are unmistakeable against the rubble background. Males construct rudimentary spawning pits among rubble, sometimes using depressions beneath overhanging rocks or debris; malawi.si notes that the pits are often barely noticeable, more a cleared patch than an excavated bowl. Unlike many mbuna males, which aggressively defend a territory year-round, chrysogaster males do not appear to feed during the active breeding period — a cost that likely limits the duration and frequency of territorial tenure. Males that are subdominant or non-territorial remain in duller non-breeding dress and are not obviously aggressive; the species as a whole has a reputation, consistent across multiple keeper accounts, for less intra- and interspecific aggression than most mbuna. Despite the 'Jack Dempsey' nickname, the fish is mild-mannered: Rick Borstein (GCCA, 2011) reports his adults were repeatedly cowed by much smaller Neolamprologus tankmates. Female choice appears straightforward — the male displays to passing females, a receptive female approaches, spawning follows, and the female collects the fertilized eggs.
Breeding
Naevochromis chrysogaster is a maternal mouthbrooder, consistent with the rest of the Lake Malawi haplochromine flock. The female alone broods and guards the developing young; no paternal involvement in incubation is recorded. Clutch size is small for a Malawi cichlid of this body size: Borstein's (2011) captive account is the most detailed published record, reporting 25 large eggs stripped at day 8 of brooding, with 22 free-swimming fry emerging after a total incubation of 26 days. The fry are notably large on emergence and able to take freshly hatched brine shrimp nauplii immediately. Growth is said to be relatively slow — Borstein's fry had barely reached 1 in at two months. Sexual maturity is reached around two years in captivity. The malawi.si account specifies that territorial males do not feed during the breeding period. No wild clutch data are published. Compared with the large clutches typical of many Malawi haplochromines, the small egg number and prolonged incubation reflect the energy cost of producing large, well-provisioned larvae — a life-history trade-off seen in other paedophages and large predatory haplochromines whose juveniles face high predation risk.
In the aquarium
Naevochromis chrysogaster is genuinely rare in the hobby. It appears at specialist cichlid dealers and swap-meets occasionally, more often as fry from a hobbyist breeding project than as imported wild stock, and it almost never turns up in general aquatic retail. Keepers who maintain it tend to be experienced Malawi enthusiasts with existing infrastructure; anyone acquiring the species for the first time should plan for that level of care rather than treating it as a novelty haplochromine.
Size drives the tank requirement above everything else. Males are reported at 8.5–9 in under sustained aquarium care, and females at 5–6 in; those are not small fish. A single pair needs at least a 300-litre (80 US gallon) tank as a practical minimum, and a group of one male with two or three females is better served by 120 US gal or more. The tank should be set up as a Malawi rocky intermediate: a deep sand substrate (1–2 in of fine silica sand), a substantial rockwork structure against the back or side walls with caves and overhangs, and open mid-water and foreground swimming space. This species follows its prey across rock-to-sand transitions in the wild and is not a crevice dweller, so unbroken rock stacks that crowd out swimming room are less appropriate here than in mbuna setups. Filtration should be robust; a large active predator with a meaty diet produces a nitrogen load to match.
Water chemistry must replicate Lake Malawi: pH 7.8–8.3, general hardness above 10 °dH, and temperature 75–79 °F. These are non-negotiable — soft acidic water causes chronic stress and eventual immune failure. Malawi buffer or similar commercial rift-lake salts achieve stable chemistry where tap water is too soft. The species tolerates the upper end of the pH range well but should not be pushed above 8.5. Regular water changes (30 % weekly) are more important than chemical additives.
Tankmate selection requires genuine care. Naevochromis chrysogaster is a paedophage: it is specifically built to rob mouthbrooding cichlids of their eggs and larvae. Any tankmate that is a mouthbrooder and small enough to be intimidated — including most mbuna, most Aulonocara, and any small haplochromine — is at risk of having its broods intercepted or destroyed. The most practical companions are large, robust non-mouthbrooding or substrate-spawning cichlids that do not trigger the paedophagic response (though the distinction is imperfect in an aquarium), or similarly large Malawi haplochromines whose size makes them less easy targets. Large Copadichromis, large Otopharynx, or similarly scaled peaceful haps are frequently reported as compatible. Despite its trade name of 'Jack Dempsey', the species is notably mild-mannered for its size; intraspecific aggression between males does occur but reports of severe tankmate bullying are uncommon, and it has been repeatedly out-competed by smaller, more aggressive cichlids in mixed tanks.
Feeding in captivity is straightforward: the species accepts cichlid pellets, large sticks, and frozen or live meaty foods (krill, mysis, bloodworm, earthworm) without difficulty. High-vegetable or spirulina-heavy diets are unnecessary and may be poorly utilised given the fish's trophic level. Malawi bloat — the bloated, often fatal bacterial or protozoal gut condition associated with rift-lake cichlids fed inappropriate diets or kept in suboptimal water — is a real risk if food quality drops, water changes lapse, or the fish is stressed by overcrowding. Avoid feeder fish from unknown sources, which can introduce pathogens; frozen meaty foods are preferable. Breeding in captivity is documented (Borstein 2011 is the most complete published account) and follows standard Malawi mouthbrooder protocol: strip or separate the holding female at day 10–14 if other tankmates are present, or allow her to complete the roughly 26-day hold in a species-only or very quiet tank. Fry are large and straightforward to raise on freshly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. This is not a species for a community cichlid tank or for a first venture into Malawi haplochromines; it is a rewarding long-term project for a keeper prepared for its specific needs.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Naevochromis chrysogaster as Least Concern (assessed 20 June 2018 by Ad Konings and Jacqueline Kazembe, with an errata version published in 2019; reviewed by Jos Snoeks). The basis is a lake-wide distribution with no evidence of population-level decline, no major widespread threats specific to the species, and confirmed presence in protected waters — including Lake Malawi National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site at the southern end of the lake. The only extractive pressure identified is small-scale ornamental collection; the species is collected for the trade under the name 'Naevochromis chrysogaster' or occasionally as 'Haplochromis Jack Dempsey', but demand is modest and collection is not considered a threat at present. The species is too rare in the hobby to be commercially significant, and its large size limits the volumes that can be sustainably transported. The Least Concern verdict is well supported by the biology: a fish with lake-wide occurrence, the depth flexibility to follow prey into the intermediate and deeper zones, and the ability to track mouthbrooding cichlids wherever they go is not structurally vulnerable in the way that a single-reef endemic is. That said, it is worth placing the species in the full context of its home lake. The Lake Malawi/Niassa/Nyasa basin — the world's most species-rich freshwater lake — is under documented and worsening pressure. Chavula and colleagues (Journal of Great Lakes Research, 2023) synthesize the evidence: a decades-long collapse of the commercial chambo (Oreochromis) fishery from heavy artisanal and commercial over-fishing; rising nutrient and sediment loads from deforested and farmed catchments, especially along the southern and eastern coasts; approximately 33 °F of measured warming in the lake's surface waters that is strengthening stratification, suppressing the deep-mixing upwellings that recycle nutrients, and gradually reducing epipelagic productivity. For a paedophage whose prey is the early life stages of other cichlids, a decline in the density and reproductive rate of mouthbrooding hosts — even from indirect causes like habitat sedimentation or thermal stratification reducing prey fish productivity — would be a real concern, even if it would not register as a direct threat. The species is currently stable, but its welfare is coupled to the health of the whole rocky-shore cichlid community it depends on.
