Hybridization watchi

Nyassachromis boadzulu is a slender, zooplankton-hunting haplochromine cichlid confined to a few sandy localities in the south-east arm of Lake Malawi. Males in breeding dress are unmistakable: a clean blue body crossed by vertical bars and anchored by a sharp horizontal stripe, the head blazed white-blue from snout to dorsal margin. What makes this fish genuinely unusual within its genus is its breeding system — males construct tall sand craters on the lake floor and defend them in communal leks, a strategy that places it closer to Copadichromis in behaviour than its slender, torpedo-shaped body might suggest. The species is rare, poorly known, and rated Endangered by the IUCN.

Taxonomy & naming

T. D. Iles described the species in 1960 as Haplochromis boadzulu, in a major revision of the Lake Malawi haplochromines published in the Annals and Magazine of Natural History. The type locality is given as "south-east arm of the lake, south of Boadzulu Island and near eastern shore" — the island whose name became the epithet. The species passed through two further generic assignments before reaching its current home: it was moved to the wastebasket genus Cyrtocara Moore, 1903 as aquaristic usage shifted, and later briefly placed in Copadichromis Eccles & Trewavas, 1989 before the same authors recognised Nyassachromis as a distinct genus in that same landmark 1989 monograph "Malawi Cichlids" (British Museum Natural History). Eccles and Trewavas based Nyassachromis on a suite of characters including a long, coiled gut and a body form associated with open-water planktivory; they erected the genus specifically to accommodate the slender sand-dwelling and pelagic zooplankton specialists that didn't fit cleanly into Copadichromis.

The synonymy therefore runs: Haplochromis boadzulu Iles, 1960 (original combination) → Cyrtocara boadzulu → Copadichromis boadzulu → Nyassachromis boadzulu (Iles, 1960), accepted name. The parenthetical authority signals that the species was not described in the genus it now occupies. In the aquarium literature of the late 1980s and early 1990s, the name 'boadzulu' was incorrectly applied to a completely different fish — a geographical race of Protomelas taeniolatus from Namalenje Island sold as the 'Red Empress' or 'Boadzulu'. That confusion was clarified by Konings (1989, 1990) and the Eccles & Trewavas revision; the true Nyassachromis boadzulu is a much rarer and visually distinct animal.

Morphology

Nyassachromis boadzulu is a moderately elongate cichlid with the slender, torpedo-like proportions typical of the genus. Maximum size is reported by FishBase as 5.5 in total length; malawi.si, drawing on field observations by Ad Konings, gives males up to approximately 6.5 in TL and females considerably smaller at around 5 in TL. The two figures are not necessarily in conflict — the FishBase figure may reflect the smaller wild-caught specimens, while Konings's field observations include fully mature dominant males. Konings's Cichlids Yearbook vol. 2 account cites a maximum of about 5.5 in.

Sexual dimorphism is pronounced. Breeding males display a blue ground colour overlaid with vertical barring that is most visible during courtship and spawning. The diagnostic feature is a strong horizontal mid-lateral stripe running from the third vertical bar to the caudal peduncle — this stripe distinguishes Nyassachromis boadzulu from Protomelas taeniolatus, which carries a second, dorso-lateral stripe absent in boadzulu. Fully coloured males develop a white-blue blaze on the head that continues as a pale marginal band in the dorsal fin. Females and juveniles are predominantly silvery, lacking the blue pigment and striping of adult males. The mouth is small and notably protrusible — an adaptation to suction-feeding on zooplankton in the water column, clearly demonstrated by captive fish actively extending their jaws to capture suspended food items.

Habitat

The species is a narrow endemic, known only from the south-east arm of Lake Malawi. Documented localities are Boadzulu Island (the type locality), White Rock, and Kancheza Island — all within a comparatively small stretch of the south-eastern shoreline in Malawian and adjacent Mozambican waters. FishBase places the latitudinal range at 14°S–15°S, consistent with the south-east arm. The habitat is open sand floor, where Nyassachromis boadzulu is most often encountered at depths of 16–49 ft, sometimes in the vicinity of small rocks or rubble but essentially a fish of bare substrate away from the rocky mbuna community. FishBase notes it is "often found in shallow water over open sand floors; also found near small rocks and rubble on the bottom." The population at Crocodile Rocks, documented by malawi.si with photographs by Ad Konings, occurs at the interface between rock and sand in the intermediate habitat characteristic of several sand-dwelling hap species.

Lake Malawi's south-east arm is a sheltered, deep embayment with the hard-alkaline chemistry typical of the lake as a whole: pH 7.7–8.6 (mean around 8.0–8.2 in the epilimnion), temperature 75–82 °F near the surface, and moderate hardness. FishBase lists the preferred temperature range for Nyassachromis boadzulu as 75–79 °F; the lake's actual surface layers cycle seasonally between approximately 75 °F and 82 °F, with the cooler end of that range typical during the dry-season mixing period (July–August). Depth is the principal axis along which temperature stratification operates; at the 16–49 ft range this species occupies, temperatures remain within the 75–79 °F bracket for much of the year.

Feeding

Nyassachromis boadzulu is an obligate zooplankton feeder. FishBase classifies it as "selective plankton feeding" and records the diet as "exclusively zooplankton," citing the founding authority Eccles & Trewavas (1989). The FishBase trophic level estimate is 3.4 (±0.45 s.e.), consistent with a carnivore that feeds on small crustaceans and zooplankton rather than herbivory or detritivory. The protrusible, small-calibre mouth is the anatomical correlate of this diet: it enables the fish to generate a rapid suction burst directed at individual copepods and cladocerans in the water column. Konings's Cichlids Yearbook vol. 2 account notes that "C. boadzulu belongs to the utaka group and feeds predominantly on plankton in the open water" — the utaka complex being the informal grouping of Lake Malawi's open-water planktivores. In captivity the species readily accepts small frozen foods such as brine shrimp (Artemia) and mysis, and forum keepers note that the males actively extend their protrusible jaws when suspended food enters the water — a behaviour that closely mirrors the suction-feeding mechanics described from wild fish.

Mating

Nyassachromis boadzulu is a lekking sand bower-builder, and this sets it apart from most of its close relatives in a meaningful way. In the wild, breeding males descend to open sandy substrates and excavate or heap sand into conical craters — the classic Nyassachromis nest form described by Konings for the genus (Cichlids Yearbook vol. 1). Males aggregate in loose breeding colonies, each defending his own crater against competing males while simultaneously displaying to females that cruise overhead in the open water. The architectural investment in the bower is substantial: Konings recorded a captive male constructing a sand cone approximately 10 in tall (Cichlids Yearbook vol. 2), and males will rebuild the structure if relocated. The cone's peak is the spawning site, and the nest architecture appears to signal male quality to females selecting among the lek.

The relationship between Nyassachromis boadzulu's bower-building behaviour and its generic placement has been noted by multiple authors. Eccles & Trewavas (1989), and later Konings (Cichlids Yearbook vol. 2), pointed out that the combination of a horizontal mid-lateral stripe (absent from most spotted Copadichromis species) and sand-castle nest construction suggests genuine affinity with Nyassachromis. Most Copadichromis species, by contrast, are spotted and do not build bowers. Males in the breeding arena display vigorously, particularly the distinctive head blaze and dorsal fin banding, and courtship is conducted at the crater rim.

Breeding

Nyassachromis boadzulu is a maternal mouthbrooder, as is standard across the Lake Malawi haplochromine assemblage. Spawning takes place at the male's sand crater after the female has been drawn to the lek site by his courtship display. The female picks up the eggs after laying them at the nest apex; she then carries and incubates them in the buccal cavity for approximately 21 days, during which she does not feed. Clutch sizes documented from aquarium breeding runs to approximately 30–50 fry per brood (malawi.si), which is relatively small for a cichlid this size — consistent with the pattern in sand-dwelling species where larger, better-nurtured offspring per brood may be favoured over high fecundity. In the wild, juvenile Nyassachromis boadzulu have been observed swimming in groups, a common post-release behaviour among Malawian mouthbrooders that may offer some safety in numbers before individuals develop the adult body plan.

The Konings Cichlids Yearbook vol. 2 account notes that "the number of fry released per spawn... never consisted of more than 19 babies" in one aquarium observation — consistent with the small-clutch pattern, though the number likely varies with female size and condition. Wild spawning observations are sparse, as this is one of the rarer Malawian hap species, and the Konings account specifically states that "breeding individuals were not seen" in the field at the time of writing (early 1990s). The malawi.si documentation is more recent and draws on Konings's ongoing field work.

In the aquarium

Nyassachromis boadzulu is rarely kept in the hobby. It appears sporadically in specialist cichlid circles — primarily among dedicated Lake Malawi sand-hap enthusiasts in Germany and the USA — but has never been established as a mainstream aquarium fish, and sourcing true, correctly identified specimens is genuinely difficult. The confusion between this species and Protomelas taeniolatus 'Boadzulu' (the 'Red Empress' geographical variant) that persisted in the European trade through the 1990s has never been fully resolved in all corners of the hobby, so caution over provenance is warranted before purchase. What follows is based on generalised care for open-water, sand-dwelling Lake Malawi haplochromines in the utaka alliance, applied to the specific ecological profile of this species; direct husbandry literature for Nyassachromis boadzulu specifically is thin.

A 180-litre tank is the practical minimum for a single male with two or three females, but a footprint of at least 120 × 19.5 in — and ideally larger — is strongly preferable given the male's bower-building behaviour: he will attempt to excavate and heap sand regardless of tank volume, and restricting that activity appears to increase aggression. A standard 240–360-litre 'hap and peacock' community tank works well. The substrate should be fine to medium silica or quartz sand, at least 2–3 in deep to allow the male to form a crater. Decoration should lean toward open water: a broad unobstructed sandy zone across most of the floor, with a modest rockwork background (not the dense mbuna-style cave labyrinth) to provide retreat options for females and subordinate fish. Heavily planted tanks are not appropriate — rooted plants will be uprooted by bower-building activity, and the species' Lake Malawi origin does not include macrophyte beds.

Water chemistry should match Lake Malawi parameters closely: pH 7.8–8.6 (pH 8.0–8.2 is the practical target), temperature 75–81 °F, and moderately hard, well-buffered water. A carbonate hardness of at least 8–10 dKH helps maintain pH stability. Good filtration and a regular partial water-change regime (25–30% weekly) are important — Lake Malawi has extremely stable, oligotrophic chemistry, and fish from this environment are intolerant of nitrate accumulation. Malawi bloat (a metabolic / bacterial condition exacerbated by unsuitable diet and poor water quality) is the most commonly cited killer of Lake Malawi haplochromines in captivity; it is most often triggered by feeding high-protein meaty foods or beef heart, or by allowing nitrates to climb. For Nyassachromis boadzulu, which is an obligate zooplankton feeder in the wild, a diet centred on small frozen or live foods — Artemia (brine shrimp), mysis, daphnia, cyclops — is appropriate. Dry spirulina-based foods are widely used as a staple for Malawi cichlids and are tolerable here, but the natural diet is carnivorous-planktivorous rather than algal, so spirulina should not be the sole component.

Tankmate selection should follow the standard hap-and-peacock approach: other peaceful, comparably sized Lake Malawi open-water species — Copadichromis, Aulonocara (peacocks), and non-aggressive Haplochromis-lineage haps — are suitable companions. Nyassachromis boadzulu is a peaceable species and must not be housed with aggressive mbuna (Pseudotropheus, Melanochromis, Labeotropheus). The combination of a sand-dwelling peacock disposition and an open-water body form means that mbuna outcompete and harass it severely. Similarly, other highly aggressive open-water haps such as Nimbochromis or Tyrannochromis are poor choices. Males of Nyassachromis boadzulu will spar with conspecific or similarly striped males, so a single dominant male is the most reliable approach in a community tank.

Breeding in captivity has been achieved by a small number of specialist keepers. The male will construct a sand bower — a conical heap or crater, sometimes 4–10 in tall — and display from the apex to attract females. Spawning typically takes place at or near the crater rim. Females are maternal mouthbrooders and should ideally be removed to a separate brooding tank approximately five to seven days after spawning, once the eggs have been taken up, to prevent stress-induced spitting and to allow the male's bower-holding aggression to subside. Incubation runs approximately 21 days; fry are released capable of taking newly hatched Artemia and finely powdered dry food. Clutches are small — typically 20–50 fry — which limits the rate at which captive bloodlines can be propagated. Given the species' Endangered status in the wild, any keeper who establishes a stable breeding group is contributing meaningfully to an uncoordinated but genuine ex-situ reservoir for the species.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Nyassachromis boadzulu as Endangered (EN), assessed 23 May 2018 by Ad Konings, under criteria A2d; B1ab(v)+2ab(v). The EN listing reflects both a suspected population decline (criterion A2d, inferred from declining aquarium trade captures and habitat degradation) and the species' extremely restricted range — a single contiguous area of occupancy and extent of occurrence in the south-east arm (criteria B1 and B2), with continuing decline in the number of mature individuals (sub-criterion v). The IUCN assessment places Nyassachromis boadzulu among roughly 9% of Lake Malawi's assessed fish species rated at high risk of extinction (Sayer et al. 2019, IUCN Conservation Priorities for the Lake Malawi/Nyasa/Niassa Catchment).

At the lake-wide level, Lake Malawi's cichlid fauna faces a convergence of pressures that bear directly on sand-dwelling species like Nyassachromis boadzulu. Overfishing — particularly by seine and trawl in the south-east arm — removes adult fish and disrupts sand communities. Sedimentation from deforestation of the lake's watershed buries and smothers the clean open-sand habitat that sand-dwelling species require for lek formation and spawning; Tweddle and Turner (2005, Aquatic Ecosystem Health and Management) identify sedimentation as one of the lake's most serious ecological stressors. Aquarium collection, while contributing to the trade, is also an indicator of population status — the rarity of the true Nyassachromis boadzulu in the trade, noted by Konings since the 1990s, is itself a signal that wild populations are small and patchily distributed.

The species is not listed under CITES. Its limited range across two or at most three known localities in the south-east arm means that any habitat-scale disturbance at those sites — sedimentation pulse, seine-net sweep of the sand flat, or a particularly intense dry-season fishing pressure — could be locally catastrophic. No captive conservation programme is known to be in place for this species specifically, though hobbyists in Germany, the USA, and the UK have maintained breeding colonies, which represents an uncoordinated but real ex-situ reservoir.
