Taxonomy & naming
Enteromius rouxi was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Daget in 1961 under the original combination Barbus rouxi, placing it in the broad catch-all genus Barbus that historically accommodated most Old World barb-like cyprinids. The species is confirmed in ITIS under that original name, and the Catalog of Fishes records the current valid combination as Enteromius rouxi (Daget, 1961), the parenthetical authority indicating that the genus has since been reassigned.
The genus Enteromius, resurrected and redefined as part of the ongoing restructuring of African barbs, now holds a large number of small-to-medium African cyprinids previously scattered across Barbus and related names. African barbs as a group are still being actively revised; many species in the Enteromius radiation are known from few specimens or from single drainage systems, and taxonomic relationships across the genus remain incompletely resolved.
Morphology
Enteromius rouxi is a small, benthopelagic barb reaching approximately 2 in standard length (about 3 in total length). It has an inferior mouth — set below the snout tip, a characteristic of many substrate-feeding African barbs — and bears two pairs of very short barbels. The lateral line carries 34 to 37 scales, and 12 scales encircle the caudal peduncle.
Detailed colouration and body-shape information are sparse in the available literature. Like many Enteromius, it is presumably a moderately slender, silvery to olive-toned cyprinid with the lateral-line scale count and barbel arrangement serving as diagnostic characters. Trophic level is recorded at 3.0, consistent with an invertivore–omnivore that gleans small prey from or near the substrate.
Habitat
The species is endemic to the Niari River system in the Republic of Congo. The Niari is part of the Ogooué-Nyanga-Kouilou-Niari freshwater ecoregion (FEOW ecoregion 532) within the Lower Guinea ichthyofaunal province — a biologically significant region that sits at the contact zone between the Ogooué and Congo river drainages and supports high levels of endemism.
The baseline water chemistry of the region reflects its Central African rainforest setting: pH values in the broadly neutral range (around 6.9–7.2 is consistent with nearby Congo Basin survey data), low hardness (roughly 3–8 dH), and temperatures in the 75–81 °F band typical of equatorial lowland and foothill streams. Enteromius rouxi is recorded as a benthopelagic freshwater fish, spending much of its time in mid-water to near-substrate zones.
Feeding
Enteromius rouxi's inferior mouth position and a trophic level of 3.0 indicate a diet centred on small invertebrates and organic material gathered from or near the substrate — insect larvae, small crustaceans, worms and detritus are typical fare for African barbs of similar morphology and size.
Detailed gut-content studies for this species are not available in the published literature. In an aquarium context, species of this ecological guild generally accept a varied diet of small live and frozen invertebrates — bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia — supplemented with fine sinking pellets and vegetable matter.
Mating
Like all barbs, Enteromius rouxi is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No nest is built and no pair bond persists beyond the spawning act. A conditioned male pursues a gravid female through vegetation or over the substrate; at the peak of the chase the pair press together briefly and release eggs and milt simultaneously.
Spawning in tropical African barbs is often tied to the onset of seasonal rainfall and rising water levels, which trigger reproductive readiness by lowering water temperatures marginally, raising dissolved oxygen, and increasing food availability as floodwaters flush invertebrates into the stream. No specific courtship or mating observations have been published for this species.
Breeding
Enteromius rouxi has not been recorded as a captive breeding subject in the accessible aquarium literature. By analogy with other small African Enteromius, breeding would follow the standard barb pattern: adhesive eggs scattered over fine-leaved plants, submerged roots, or the substrate, with no parental care whatsoever — the adults will consume eggs and larvae if given the opportunity.
In an aquarium breeding attempt, the standard approach for small African barbs applies: condition adults on varied live and frozen foods, set up a shallow tank with fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop over a mesh or layer of marbles, use soft slightly acidic water at the species' natural temperature range, and remove the adults promptly after spawning. Egg and larval development times would be expected in the range typical for small tropical cyprinids — hatching within one to two days at 77–81 °F, free-swimming larvae a few days later.
In the aquarium
Enteromius rouxi is not an established aquarium fish and is essentially unknown in the hobby outside specialist interest in West and Central African stream fishes. Its small size (under 2.5 in SL), benthopelagic habits and presumed preferences for soft, warm, near-neutral water make it broadly compatible with a well-planted West African biotope aquarium, but it is unlikely to be available through the mainstream trade.
For any keeper who does obtain the species, conditions that reflect the Niari River environment — temperatures around 75–81 °F, pH near neutral (6.8–7.2), soft to moderately soft water, good oxygenation, and a substrate of fine sand or leaf litter — would be appropriate starting points. As a schooling benthopelagic fish it should be housed in a group. Peaceful tankmates of comparable size are advisable.
Conservation
Enteromius rouxi is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, evaluated in 2009. The Data Deficient rating reflects an absence of sufficient distributional, population or ecological data to make a direct or indirect assessment of extinction risk — not a determination that the species is secure. Given that it is known only from the Niari River system in the Republic of Congo, any significant threat to that drainage could have serious consequences for the species.
The Niari catchment is subject to pressures common across Central African river systems: agricultural expansion, logging, artisanal mining, and associated water-quality degradation. The Lower Guinea ichthyofaunal province as a whole harbours high levels of endemism among its freshwater fishes, making targeted surveys of poorly known species like E. rouxi a conservation priority. Updated assessments and field surveys would be needed before the species' true threat level can be determined.
