Taxonomy & naming
The black-banded Congo cichlid was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Pellegrin in 1900, in his paper on new or rare fishes of the French Congo, under the original combination Paratilapia nigrofasciata. The two syntypes, held at the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle in Paris (MNHN 1886-0452 and 0453), came from Nganchou in the upper Congo. The species was later transferred to Pelmatochromis, a genus Franz Steindachner had erected in 1894 — at first only as a subgenus of Paratilapia — and it has been treated as valid in Pelmatochromis ever since, including in Daget's 1991 CLOFFA account and the comprehensive Stiassny, Teugels & Hopkins surveys of the Lower Guinea fishes (2007) and the more recent Congo-basin treatments of Stiassny and colleagues (2021) and Fermon et al. (2022). Two old names, Paratilapia dorsalis and Paratilapia longispinnis, are usually listed as synonyms. Pelmatochromis is a small West and Central African genus that is the wreckage of a once-sprawling catch-all: through the twentieth century it accumulated dozens of small African cichlids that were progressively moved out as their relationships were understood, most influentially by Thys van den Audenaerde, whose 1968 revision split off the dwarf kribs as the subgenus (later genus) Pelvicachromis, and by later workers who reassigned other species to Pelvicachromis, Pelmatolapia, Chromidotilapia and Tylochromis. What remains in Pelmatochromis is a handful of larger, deeper-bodied species — nigrofasciatus, the type species buettikoferi, and ocellifer — that share a cushion-like papillose pad on each side of the palate, the very character Steindachner used to define the genus.
Morphology
Pelmatochromis nigrofasciatus is a robust, deep-bodied cichlid; FishBase records a maximum of about 4.5 in standard length, though well-fed aquarium males are reported to reach roughly 6 in in total length, with females staying noticeably smaller. The body depth is considerable — about 40 to 47 percent of standard length, with the greatest depth lying well behind the origin of the dorsal fin — and the head is moderately large with a wide interorbital space, a small terminal mouth, and a short, deep caudal peduncle. The fin counts run to roughly 14 to 15 dorsal spines and 10 to 11 soft rays, with three anal spines and 8 to 10 anal soft rays; the caudal fin is truncate and heavily scaled across its base. The species takes its name from a series of about six broad dark transverse bars across the flanks, a pattern that is often most obvious in preserved specimens and in stressed or subordinate fish, fading against a warmer golden-olive ground colour in dominant, settled adults. Sexual dimorphism is clear: males grow larger and develop produced soft dorsal and anal fins that trail well beyond the caudal fin, and their pelvic-fin tips reach back past the spiny anal fin, while females are fuller-bodied and, when in breeding condition, flush a conspicuous red to reddish-orange across the belly and chest. Juveniles colour up gradually, first showing a dark tilapia-style spot on the dorsal fin, then the body banding, and finally the golden adult sheen.
Habitat
This is a fish of western Central Africa's rivers rather than its great lakes. Its range takes in the Kouilou-Niari, Loémé and Djoungou drainages of the Republic of the Congo and the Ogooué basin of Gabon, and then a very broad sweep of the middle Congo basin in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, between Kinshasa and Yangambi — including the Dja, the Ruki and Tshuapa, the Kasai, Lake Tumba, the Lomami and the Itimbiri — with records also from the lower Congo. These are warm, soft, often tea-stained equatorial waters draining lowland rainforest. The species favours slow- to moderately-flowing river reaches and associated floodplain and swamp habitats, where it forages over open patches of sand among submerged wood, roots and leaf litter; it is a demersal, bottom-oriented fish in life. In-situ chemistry has not been published specifically for this species, but the lowland Congo and Lower Guinea rivers it inhabits are characteristically warm (mid-20s Celsius) and run from acidic blackwater to near-neutral, soft to at most moderately mineralised water — conditions that frame the husbandry advice below. Across the basin it is one of the more widely distributed members of its genus rather than a narrow-range endemic.
Feeding
Pelmatochromis nigrofasciatus is best described as an opportunistic benthic omnivore. FishBase places it at a trophic level of about 3.4, and the dentition is consistent with a generalist that takes both animal and plant material: the jaws carry an outer row of evenly spaced, conical, unicuspid teeth backed by two to four rows of smaller inner teeth, with some shouldered or bicuspid teeth in smaller individuals. In the wild it works the bottom of slow river reaches and floodplains, picking through sand, detritus and leaf litter for small invertebrates and other organic matter. Detailed wild gut-content studies are lacking for this species in particular, but its build and behaviour — a bottom-patrolling forager that inspects crevices and open sand — point to the same broad invertivore-leaning omnivory seen across the riverine cichlids of the region. In captivity it accepts a wide menu readily, which is part of its reputation as an undemanding fish.
Mating
For a comparatively large cichlid, Pelmatochromis nigrofasciatus is notably mild-mannered, and outside of breeding it can be maintained in a community without much trouble. Reproduction sharpens its behaviour but does not transform it into the kind of relentless aggressor familiar from rift-lake cichlids. Pairs form on a chosen substrate, and courtship is understated: the male raises his fins and "dances" over the cleaned spawning site, while the female, her belly and chest flushed red, signals her readiness. The female is the more committed defender of the brood — keepers consistently note that it is the female with eggs or fry who most actively drives off intruders, while the male tends to keep a looser watch over the wider territory. Because the species can be shy, a settled, unharassed pair is far more likely to spawn than fish kept under social pressure, which is the main reason a quiet species tank is recommended for serious breeding attempts.
Breeding
Pelmatochromis nigrofasciatus is an open-substrate (substratum) spawner with biparental brood care — a contrast to the cave- and shell-spawning of the dwarf kribs that were once lumped into the same genus. The pair cleans a firm surface such as a flat rock or slate, and the female deposits adhesive eggs in batches that the male follows over and fertilises; reported clutches are large, with up to around 500 eggs in a single spawn. The eggs are fanned and guarded — principally by the female — and hatch in roughly three to four days at typical tropical temperatures, with the fry becoming free-swimming a further three to four days after that. The parents shepherd the wrigglers and then the free-swimming fry, and with limited disturbance they make capable, attentive guardians; one experienced keeper raised broods alongside the parents to about an inch in length over roughly six weeks, though leaving the young in that long stresses the adults and is not recommended. The fry grow quickly and feed voraciously, colouring up through the juvenile tilapia-spot and banded stages described above. The literature is split on whether soft water is essential: Anton Lamboj's standard reference, The Cichlid Fishes of Western Africa, reports that the species needs soft water to spawn, yet Rick and Sam Borstein recorded spawnings in hard, alkaline Chicago tap water (pH 7.4, around 300 ppm hardness), so while soft, slightly acidic water mirrors the natural habitat and is the safer bet, it does not appear to be an absolute requirement for captive-bred stock.
In the aquarium
The black-banded Congo cichlid is a good introduction to the "westies" — the West and Central African riverine cichlids — because it is hardy, undemanding and, for its size, peaceable. It is rarely seen in general pet shops, but tank-bred fish circulate through cichlid clubs and specialist breeders and are becoming easier to find. A single pair is comfortable in a tank of roughly 35.5 in / 36 inches and 55 US gal or more; larger footprints help in a community by providing open patrol lanes and broken sightlines. The habitat-correct layout is a soft-water river biotope: fine sand, scattered flat stones and slate (which double as spawning sites), driftwood and roots, some leaf litter, moderate flow and subdued lighting to settle what can be a slightly shy fish.
Water conditions should lean toward the soft, warm, slightly acidic waters of its native rivers. A practical maintenance window is pH around 6.0 to 7.2, soft to moderately hard water, and a temperature of roughly 73–82 °F; sources differ on the lower bound, with some keeping it warm in the mid-to-upper 20s and others reporting success at the cooler end, but warm, stable water is the consistent recommendation. As with most cichlids of clear, oxygen-rich forest streams, the fish does best with strong filtration, good oxygenation and regular partial water changes to keep nitrate low; it tolerates ordinary tap water better than its delicate dwarf relatives, but stable, clean conditions still pay off.
Feeding is straightforward. The species takes quality sinking pellets and granules as a staple and relishes frozen and live foods — bloodworm, mysis, brine shrimp, daphnia, finely chopped seafood — with some vegetable content (spirulina flakes, blanched greens) to round out an omnivore's diet. Compatibility is its strong suit: outside of breeding it mixes well with robust, similarly sized tankmates that are not bite-sized or fin-nippy, including larger tetras and barbs, calmer haplochromines, milder mbuna in big tanks, and other West African cichlids. The usual caveats apply — give a breeding pair space, expect the female to defend her fry vigorously, and avoid stocking it with anything small enough to be viewed as food or aggressive enough to bully a fish that would rather not fight.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Pelmatochromis nigrofasciatus as Least Concern (assessed 16 February 2009 by T. Moelants, published 2010), with the population trend listed as unknown and no specific threats recorded. The assessment reflects the species' broad distribution across the central Congo basin and adjacent western drainages and the absence of any documented population-level pressure; it carries no CITES or CMS listing and is of negligible interest to fisheries. As a wide-ranging riverine generalist it is far less exposed than the many narrow-range endemics of the region. That said, the rivers of the Congo basin and Lower Guinea face broad and growing pressures — deforestation and land-use change in their catchments, expanding artisanal and industrial mining with attendant siltation and pollution, and the freshwater consequences of a rapidly changing climate — and freshwater habitats remain comparatively under-studied and under-protected in conservation planning across the region. None of these is documented as a present danger to this particular cichlid, but they form the backdrop against which its long-term outlook should be read.
