Taxonomy & naming
Pseudotropheus sp. "Polit" is an undescribed mbuna form that has been circulating in the hobby and scientific correspondence under the informal name "polit" for several decades. An attribution to Warren E. Burgess in the fourth edition of Ad Konings' Malawi Cichlids in their Natural Habitat (Cichlid Press, El Paso, 2007) is widely repeated in hobby literature as if it were a formal description, but the name "Pseudotropheus polit Burgess, 2007" is NOT registered in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes and has no standing in zoological nomenclature. A name published only in a popular hobby book, without the requirements of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN) being met, is an unavailable name — a nomen nudum — and cannot be used as a valid scientific name. This form therefore circulates correctly as Pseudotropheus sp. "Polit" pending a formal description in a peer-reviewed venue meeting ICZN criteria. The type locality referenced in hobby accounts is near Lupingu, Tanzania (malawi.si), on the rocky Tanzanian coastline of Lake Malawi — approximately 10°04'S, 34°32'E. A closely related, also undescribed form referred to informally as Pseudotropheus sp. 'polit thumbi' is traded alongside this form and has generated some confusion in the hobby; it is distinct.
Generic placement as Pseudotropheus Regan, 1922 is provisionally appropriate. The large restructuring of mbuna genera undertaken by Li, Konings and Stauffer (2016) created Chindongo for vertically barred species within the old Pseudotropheus elongatus group; this form was not included in that transfer because it belongs to a different morphological group. Placement into Maylandia or Metriaclima would also be inappropriate on current characters. Until a formal description is published, it remains in Pseudotropheus in the broad sense. Hobbyists and vendors widely use the shorthand label 'polit', which is how this fish has circulated in the trade and is the origin of the informal sp. name.
The informal epithet "polit" is interpreted by several sources as possibly derived from the Greek politikos (civic, refined) or Latin politus (polished), perhaps an ironic allusion to the species' intense aggression. This etymology has not been confirmed by ETYFish, and since the name is unavailable the question is moot until a formal description provides an author-stated etymology.
Morphology
Pseudotropheus polit is a compact, laterally compressed mbuna. Multiple independent sources give adult male total length at around 4 inches (roughly 4 in), with females reaching about 3 inches (3 in). Like most mbuna, body depth is moderate and the forehead slopes fairly steeply; the jaws are protrusible, suited to scraping aufwuchs from rock.
Sexual dichromatism is striking. Fully dominant adult males become an icy, pale blue over the entire body — described by keepers as an almost luminous steel-blue or white-blue — with a contrasting jet-black face mask extending across the snout and cheeks. The dorsal, anal and caudal fins carry blue-white tones and egg-spots (ocelli) are present on the anal fin, as in other mbuna. Females, juveniles and subordinate or stressed males are a plain brown-grey to tan, sometimes with an indistinct horizontal dark midlateral band. The color switch from brown to brilliant blue in males can be rapid and is strongly rank-dependent: a male that is moved from a dominant position into a tank with a larger, more aggressive conspecific can revert partly or fully to brown within hours. This behavioral color-lability is a frequently cited observation among experienced keepers.
Habitat
Pseudotropheus sp. "Polit" is known from a restricted stretch of the Tanzanian shore of Lake Malawi. The principal collecting locality is near Lupingu, Tanzania (malawi.si), a rocky coastal section with large boulders and steep underwater walls in the northern Tanzanian part of the lake. Additional populations have been noted at nearby Lion's Cove (also on the western-central shore) and potentially at other rocky sites in the immediate area; keepers and traders sometimes apply the locality name 'Lion's Cove' to fish of this form, suggesting that collecting has also occurred there. The form appears to be genuinely narrow-range — there is no documented record from Malawian or Mozambican shores, consistent with its rarity in the trade.
Habitat is the rocky littoral and sublittoral zone. This form favors rock surfaces from relatively shallow depths down to what multiple sources describe as comparatively deep water for a mbuna — Borstein (hobbyist source) specifies 'relatively deep water, around rocks', and Aquatics Unlimited describes its natural environment as 'deep water rocky zones of Lake Malawi'. No precise depth measurements from in-situ dives have been published. Lake Malawi's rocky-shore water chemistry at these sites runs hard and alkaline: pH 7.7–8.6, total hardness in the range of 100–200 mg/L CaCO3, and surface water temperatures of 75–82 °F, based on published limnological measurements from the lake (Eccles 1974; Patterson & Kachinjika 1995). No population-specific chemistry measurements are on record.
Feeding
Pseudotropheus sp. "Polit" is an aufwuchs grazer, like most mbuna. In the wild it feeds primarily on the algal biocover that colonizes sunlit rock surfaces — a matrix of algal filaments, diatoms, cyanobacteria and the microinvertebrates embedded within it. Both Borstein and the GCCA profile note that vegetable matter forms the large part of the wild diet, consistent with observations of the form picking and nibbling algal film from boulders. There is no documented piscivory, and no report of sand-sifting or planktivory; this is a rock-tied, epilithic-algae specialist.
In the aquarium, keepers report that this fish readily accepts prepared foods but does best — and stays healthier over time — on diets with a high plant-based component: spirulina flakes or pellets, algae wafers, and similar low-protein options. High-protein meaty foods can predispose mbuna to the fatal condition known as Malawi bloat, a point raised consistently by experienced keepers.
Mating
Pseudotropheus sp. "Polit" is highly territorial, and males establish and defend exclusive territories on rock. Social structure in the wild follows the typical mbuna pattern: one dominant male holds the best rock and displays vigorously, while subordinate or younger males remain cryptically colored and largely excluded from prime substrate. Females and juveniles range more freely through the habitat.
Courting males intensify their blue coloration markedly, sometimes shifting toward an almost white-blue brilliance, and pursue females persistently while spreading their fins and quivering. The cichlid-forum.com community confirms that males of this form are extremely intolerant of other males of the same form and — unusually for mbuna, where intraspecific aggression is the main concern — also harass females aggressively between spawning bouts. Hobbyists consistently recommend keeping groups with a high female-to-male ratio (at minimum 1:3, ideally 1:6 or more) to distribute male aggression. Even in large tanks, a single dominant male can be the unchallenged top fish regardless of tank mates: one cichlid-forum keeper documented her fish holding dominance over larger Metriaclima in a shared 75-gallon tank.
Breeding
Pseudotropheus sp. "Polit" is a maternal mouthbrooder, following the standard mbuna pattern. After courtship the female deposits eggs on a flat rock surface and immediately picks them up into her buccal cavity; the male fertilizes them via the egg-spot lure method, in which the female snaps at the ocelli on his anal fin and takes in sperm in the process. The female broods the eggs and developing larvae for approximately 24 days at typical aquarium temperatures; Borstein notes one instance where a female held slightly over 24 days, which he describes as a few days over full term. The GCCA account puts the female's normal brooding period at roughly the same duration.
Clutch size is small to moderate for a cichlid: Borstein documents spawns of 30–35 eggs, which is broadly consistent with other small mbuna. No clutch data from wild fish have been published. On release, fry are free-swimming and large enough to take baby brine shrimp immediately; they are described as straightforward to raise on nauplii and later on micro-pellets or powdered flake.
In the aquarium, females are described as good holders (the GCCA source notes a high male-to-female ratio in spawning groups, likely reflecting the intensity of male harassment). Separating a brooding female into a maternity tank is standard practice to prevent males from harassing her into spitting the brood prematurely.
In the aquarium
Pseudotropheus sp. "Polit" is rarely seen in the mainstream aquarium trade; when it does appear, it commands prices well above those of common mbuna, and most available fish are wild-caught or F1 offspring of wild stock rather than the F5-and-beyond tank-bred generations typical of staple Malawi cichlids. Keeping this fish is therefore a commitment to a genuinely uncommon cichlid, and prospective keepers should verify that the fish they are buying are correctly identified — hobbyist accounts note confusion with similar Pseudotropheus forms and with the separate, also undescribed sp. 'polit thumbi'.
A tank of no less than 40 US gal (approximately 40 US gallons) is the practical minimum for a single male with several females, though a 55–65 US gal setup is more workable given the species' aggression and the need to dilute male attention. Like all mbuna, this fish demands Lake Malawi chemistry: pH 7.8–8.6, total hardness 150–250 mg/L GH (approximately 8–14 °dH), and temperature 75–82 °F. These parameters are best achieved with crushed coral or aragonite substrate and an appropriate buffer rather than relying on tap water alone unless you live in a hard-water area. Filtration must be substantial — at least 8–10× tank volume per hour — as mbuna are messy feeders and water quality strongly influences disease resistance.
Decor should mimic the rocky Tanzanian littoral zone: dense stacking of larger stones and slate arranged into caves, crevices, and overhangs. This species is a rock specialist and should never be kept in a bare or sparsely decorated tank — cover allows females and subordinate fish to escape the male's constant harassment and is not optional. Sand or fine gravel substrate is appropriate; a bare-bottom tank is technically workable but unnecessary and aesthetically poor. Avoid wood or peat-based additions that acidify the water. No live plants are recommended in a mbuna setup; any slow-growing plant will be shredded.
Tankmate selection for any mbuna is already constrained, and this form is at the more aggressive end. Suitable companions are other robust mbuna of different color profiles — Labidochromis caeruleus, larger Cynotilapia, or similarly sized Pseudotropheus that do not closely resemble this species visually. Keep only one male of this form per tank. Do not mix this undescribed form with other Pseudotropheus of similar appearance; hybridization is a real risk in the aquarium (mbuna hybridize readily), and the resulting offspring are indistinguishable to most buyers, which has already muddied the bloodlines of many species in the trade. Cyprichromis, Aulonocara, or any mouthbrooder that is significantly smaller is unsuitable in the same enclosure. Predatory haplochromines would work spatially but the aggression dynamic becomes unpredictable.
Diet follows the standard mbuna template: spirulina-based flake or pellet as the staple, algae wafers, blanched spinach or nori occasionally, and no more than minimal meaty protein. Feeding large quantities of bloodworm, beef heart, or high-protein cichlid pellets to mbuna causes gut dysbiosis — commonly called Malawi bloat — which presents as rapid abdominal swelling, loss of appetite, and respiratory distress and is often fatal within 48–72 hours even with treatment. This is the single most preventable cause of early death in this and related species. For breeding, maintain the female-to-male ratio of at least 3:1, ideally higher; isolate brooding females to a bare-bottom maternity tank once their buccal pouch is visibly distended, and strip or allow to release naturally at 24–26 days. Fry are raised on crushed flake and baby brine shrimp and pose no particular difficulty. Difficulty is rated moderate for an experienced mbuna keeper and moderately high for someone new to Malawi cichlids.
Conservation
Pseudotropheus sp. "Polit" is absent from the IUCN Red List and from Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes — it is an undescribed, nomenclaturally unavailable form and therefore Not Evaluated (NE). It was not among the 458 Lake Malawi cichlid species formally assessed in the 2018 IUCN Red List update that found approximately 9% of assessed Malawian cichlids to be at high extinction risk (JRS Biodiversity Foundation 2018; TRAFFIC 2018). No assessment is possible until the form is formally described and given a valid name.
As a narrow-range form tied to a few specific rocky reefs in the Tanzanian portion of the lake, this fish has the biological profile that would warrant serious scrutiny if ever formally evaluated: a small geographic range, specialist habitat requirements, and dependence on intact rocky shorelines. The Tanzanian coast near Lupingu has experienced shoreline development and demographic growth, and collection for the ornamental trade is the known route by which wild fish reach aquarists.
Lake Malawi as a whole is under substantial and worsening anthropogenic pressure. Chavula et al. (2023), reviewing the lake basin in the Journal of Great Lakes Research, document increased sediment and nutrient loading from deforestation and agricultural runoff, rising water temperatures consistent with regional climate change, declining catches in the main commercial fishery, and loss of shallow rocky-shore habitat from sedimentation — the precise ecosystem on which rock-endemic mbuna depend. The 2018 IUCN assessment linked declining mbuna populations to overfishing, sedimentation, and coastal development. The apparent rarity of this form in the trade — it commands significantly higher prices than most mbuna and is not commonly bred in large volumes — may reflect limited wild abundance, restricted range, or both. Its conservation status should be considered unknown rather than reassuring.
