Ptychochromis oligacanthus, the Nosy Be cichlid, is one of the hardy, silver-and-black substrate-spawning cichlids endemic to Madagascar. It is the type species of the Malagasy genus Ptychochromis and the namesake of the crater lakes on the island of Nosy Be, off the country's northwest coast. A tolerant fish of clear coastal lakes and silt-laden mainland rivers — and comfortable in slightly brackish water — it has become a flagship for Madagascar's imperilled freshwater fauna, surviving in the hobby and in zoo conservation programmes even as deforestation and introduced predators erode its wild range.

Taxonomy & naming

The Nosy Be cichlid was described by the Dutch ichthyologist Pieter Bleeker in 1868, in a short paper on three new Malagasy chromids, as Tilapia oligacanthus. The material came from the far north of Madagascar: Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the type locality as the Sambirano (Samberano) River on the mainland or Lake Pambilao on the offshore island of Nosy Be, with a lectotype (RMNH 3936) held in the Naturalis collection at Leiden. In the same work Bleeker named a variety, Tilapia oligacanthus var. nossibeensis, from the Nosy Be lake population; it is now treated as a synonym. The genus Ptychochromis itself was erected by Franz Steindachner in 1880, and oligacanthus stands as its type species — the anchor around which the rest of the genus is defined. Another nineteenth-century name, Ptychochromis madagascariensis Sauvage, 1891 (type locality Lake Itasy in the central highlands), also fell into synonymy. For more than a century Ptychochromis was a taxonomic catch-all into which almost any robust Malagasy cichlid was dumped, and oligacanthus in particular was applied to populations all around the island. That confusion was resolved by Melanie Stiassny and John Sparks in their 2006 revision of the genus (American Museum Novitates 3535), which restricted Ptychochromis oligacanthus to the northwest, redescribed it, described five new congeners, and split off a separate genus, Katria, for an outlying highland species. The fish sits in the subfamily Ptychochrominae, the older of the two endemic Malagasy cichlid lineages — an ancient, relictual radiation whose closest relatives are the Etroplinae of Madagascar and India, not the African or American cichlids.

Morphology

Ptychochromis oligacanthus is a robust, deep-bodied and laterally compressed cichlid with the high-backed profile typical of the family. It is among the larger members of its genus: FishBase gives a maximum of about 10 in total length, while aquarium and zoo keepers report males reaching roughly 8 in and females staying a few centimetres shorter. The ground colour is silver to greyish-blue, overlaid by a scatter of large, irregular dark blotches along the flanks — the feature that gives the fish its English book-name, the four-spotted Madagascar cichlid, although the number and intensity of the blotches vary considerably between individuals and with mood. Stiassny and Sparks diagnosed the northwestern form by a distinctive dark blotch or bar pattern combined with the "western-type" palatine bone morphology of the genus. The species epithet, oligacanthus, means "few-spined" and refers to a reduced count of dorsal-fin spines relative to other cichlids. Sexual dimorphism is modest but real: males grow larger, develop a more massive head profile and a bluish upper lip, and carry somewhat longer dorsal and anal fins whose membranes flush red when the fish is in spawning condition. Both sexes can adopt a strikingly dark, almost black, courtship dress.

Habitat

The species is endemic to northwestern Madagascar and the satellite island of Nosy Be, with a total range estimated at only about 3,500 square kilometres. On the mainland it occupies the coastal river systems from the Sambirano River northward to the Mananjeba drainage (the Andranomaloto River); on Nosy Be it lives in the island's volcanic crater lakes, including the lake that gave the original variety its name. It is a lowland coastal fish, occurring in freshwater rivers and lakes but also tolerant of brackish water, which fits its distribution across near-coastal basins and offshore island lakes. Catalog of Fishes explicitly lists its habitat as "freshwater, brackish." Water conditions differ sharply between the two halves of its range: the Nosy Be crater lakes remain mostly clear and structurally intact, whereas the mainland rivers and lakes are now typically turbid, choked with suspended sediment washed in from deforested, eroding catchments. FishBase places the species in tropical waters of roughly 75–86 °F; in-situ chemistry runs from soft and near-neutral to moderately mineralised, broadly in the pH 6.5–7.5 range that hobbyists report from collected stock. As a demersal fish it works the bottom and lower water column over sand, rock and leaf litter rather than the open water.

Feeding

Ptychochromis oligacanthus is an opportunistic omnivore, and FishBase places it around a trophic level of 3.4. In the wild it feeds largely on aquatic insects and crustaceans taken from the substrate, and it habitually "chews through" mouthfuls of sand and fine gravel while foraging, processing the bottom for small invertebrates and organic matter in the manner of many robust cichlids. It is not a dietary specialist: keepers find it will take essentially anything offered, from flake and pellet to frozen and live foods, which is one reason the species adapts so readily to captivity. Within its native communities it functions as a generalist benthic feeder of the lower water column, a role that has historically made it a target of subsistence and small-scale commercial fisheries on Madagascar.

Mating

The Nosy Be cichlid is a territorial substrate spawner that forms pairs for breeding. Its temperament is the defining feature of its social behaviour: like its congener Ptychochromis insolitus, the species is described as prone to "rowdy," boisterous aggression, and pairs can be volatile. Both keepers and conservation-breeding programmes have found that the fish does best in larger groups rather than isolated pairs — kept eight or more together, with structure to break sightlines, the animals spread their aggression across many small, constantly contested territories so that no single individual is hounded to death. When a pair forms, the male flushes dark with red-edged fins, claims and patrols a territory, and courts the female over a chosen spawning surface; the female takes the leading role in the brood care that follows. In confined spaces a dominant fish will relentlessly beat a subordinate, and breeders sometimes resort to dividing a tank with an egg-crate partition pierced by a single hole, letting the female cross to the male only when she is ready — a strategy that has produced controlled spawnings where free pairing failed.

Breeding

Ptychochromis oligacanthus is a biparental open substrate spawner. The female lays her eggs — clutches of roughly 100 to 250 — on a cleaned hard surface, preferentially a stone, and where no rock is available she will use the bare aquarium bottom. She takes the primary share of brood care, tending and fanning the eggs, while the male defends the surrounding territory rather than attending the clutch directly. Reported incubation varies with temperature and source: FishBase cites larvae hatching after 8–10 days with the parents guarding the young, while hobbyists working at warmer temperatures have seen eggs hatch in about three days, after which the pair shuttle the wrigglers between pits and caves before the fry become free-swimming a few days later. Both parents can be fiercely protective once fry are mobile. In conservation breeding at Cologne Zoo, where the species has spawned repeatedly since 2020, keepers found that clutches left with the adults tended to fungus or be eaten, so the standard practice there is to remove the eggs and raise the larvae artificially under the same water conditions as the adults; schools of several dozen juveniles are readily reared. The clutch figure of 100–250 eggs is consistent with the open-substrate, stone-spawning mode of the genus.

In the aquarium

Ptychochromis oligacanthus has a long history in specialist cichlid keeping and is genuinely undemanding in everything except temperament — it is hardy, eats anything, and tolerates a wide range of water chemistry, but it is decidedly aggressive and not a community fish. It is also not a brightly coloured one, which is why it remains a fish of dedicated hobbyists and conservation programmes rather than the general trade; juveniles circulate among enthusiasts rather than turning up in chain stores.

The single most important husbandry decision is stocking density and tank size. Conservation-breeding guidance based on the Cologne Zoo experience recommends keeping a group of about eight adults — ideally with more females than males — in an aquarium at least 5 ft long holding 130 US gal or more. Larger groups of semi-adults can be grown on in tanks of roughly 39.5–47 in, and juvenile schools of up to fifty can be raised in a 27.5 in tank around 55 US gal. Counter-intuitively for an aggressive fish, sparse décor and a group setting work better than a heavily aquascaped pair tank: constant low-level skirmishing over many small territories spreads the aggression and stops any one fish being singled out and killed. Large stones for structure, cover and spawning sites are the key furnishing, supplemented as desired with bogwood and robust plants such as Echinodorus and Anubias; sand or fine gravel suits a fish that likes to sift the bottom.

Water chemistry is forgiving. The species has been kept and bred successfully at around 75–77 °F with KH near 3, conductivity around 230 µS/cm and pH about 7.5 at Cologne Zoo, and hobbyists report equal success at 75–82 °F and pH anywhere from roughly 6.5 to 7.6 — including ordinary moderately hard tap water. A weekly water change of 30–50% keeps the fish in condition, and large, frequent changes combined with heavy feeding are a reliable spawning trigger. Brackish conditions are tolerated but not required. Feeding presents no difficulty at all: commercial flake and pellet, frozen bloodworm, mysis and brine shrimp, and live foods such as blackworms and brine shrimp are all taken eagerly. The honest caveat for any keeper is the aggression — pairs can turn on each other or on tankmates without much warning, so an egg-crate divider kept on hand and a tank big enough for subordinate fish to escape are sensible precautions.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Ptychochromis oligacanthus as Endangered (criterion B1ab(iii)), assessed on 28 June 2016 by Ravelomanana and Sparks, with a decreasing population trend. The listing reflects a very small total range — on the order of 3,311 mi² — that is severely fragmented into subpopulations with no genetic exchange between them. The overarching threat is deforestation: Madagascar has lost the great majority of its original forest cover, and the resulting soil erosion loads the mainland rivers and lakes with suspended sediment, degrading the clear-water habitats the fish depends on. The assessment and subsequent reviews add overfishing — including the use of large fine-mesh seine nets — and introduced species that compete with or prey on the native cichlids, alongside the diversion of water for large irrigation schemes in basins such as the Mananjeba and the Mahavavy du Nord. The populations on Nosy Be, where the crater lakes remain relatively intact, are for now comparatively stable, but they too are exposed to the constant risk of invasive fishes. The species is not CITES-listed. It has become a focus of ex-situ conservation: institutions including Cologne Zoo and the Aquarium de la Porte Dorée in Paris maintain and breed it, and the Citizen Conservation network has built a coordinated captive reserve population with private aquarists — a recognition that for several of Madagascar's endemic cichlids, the aquarium may prove to be a refuge against the loss of the wild.
