Taxonomy & naming
The species was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Johann Jakob Heckel in 1840 as Geophagus jurupari, on material the naturalist Johann Natterer collected in the Rio Negro of the Brazilian Amazon, with the type locality set at Barra do Rio Negro on the river's lower course. Heckel described it alongside three close relatives — Geophagus daemon, Geophagus acuticeps and Geophagus pappaterra — that share its long-snouted, gravel-coloured "juruparoid" look, and for well over a century all of them were shuffled in and out of synonymy with jurupari. The modern arrangement dates to Sven O. Kullander's 1986 monograph on the cichlids of the Peruvian Amazon, which resurrected Günther's 1862 genus Satanoperca (defined by a naked, scaleless dorsal fin, among other characters) to hold the juruparoid eartheaters and redescribed Satanoperca jurupari from Peruvian Ucayali–Amazonas specimens. In the same work Kullander pulled Satanoperca pappaterra and (with Nijssen, 1989) the Guianan Satanoperca leucosticta back out of synonymy as valid species, and predicted that several more undescribed juruparoids remained to be named — a prediction borne out in 2018 when Ota and colleagues described Satanoperca curupira from the Madeira drainage, a fish that lives side by side with true Satanoperca jurupari. The practical upshot is that "jurupari" has long been a catch-all: for decades most of the spotted-faced "jurupari" in the aquarium trade were actually Satanoperca leucosticta, and the true Satanoperca jurupari sensu Kullander is distinguished by the absence of pearly facial spotting. The genus sits in the eartheater subfamily Geophaginae; Satanoperca jurupari is its type species.
Morphology
Satanoperca jurupari is a moderately deep-bodied, laterally compressed eartheater with a long, gently sloping snout, a small subterminal mouth built for grubbing in sediment, and large high-set eyes. FishBase records a maximum of about 10 in standard length (around 10 in total length in older references; females to roughly 9 in SL), with a maximum published weight near 470 g, though most wild and aquarium fish are smaller — adults of 6–7 in are typical. The ground colour is a soft, shifting bronze that ranges from gunmetal-grey to silver to green-gold depending on mood, substrate and water, overlaid with rows of iridescent blue-green spangles on the flanks and the unpaired fins; the face and snout often carry a subtle emerald sheen. A small dark blotch sits on the caudal peduncle, and the fish can throw a faint dark longitudinal smudge along the mid-flank as a transient stress pattern (a feature that, when it is permanent and bold, instead marks the related Satanoperca pappaterra). The key diagnostic for separating true jurupari from its look-alikes is negative: it lacks the white iridescent spots on the snout and gill cover that mark Satanoperca leucosticta, and it shows two broad dark bars on the lacrimal rather than the fine multiple "face-mask" lines of Satanoperca curupira. The species is essentially isomorphic — the sexes look alike — which makes pairing difficult; the only soft cues are that ripe females become noticeably fuller and deeper in the belly, and that in some pairs the male grows slightly larger and may carry marginally longer ventral fins.
Habitat
The demon eartheater is broadly distributed through the Amazon basin, from the upper reaches in Peru, Ecuador and Colombia downstream to the mouth of the Amazon in Brazil, including Amapá and eastern French Guiana, and into the Bolivian Amazon drainage (though not the Guaporé, where Satanoperca pappaterra replaces it). Confirmed Brazilian localities span from the Rio Solimões near Tefé and Óbidos down through the Rio Xingu, Tapajós and Tocantins drainages, and Peruvian records cover a long list of Amazonian tributaries around Iquitos; the species has also been reported, with somewhat less certainty pending taxonomic review, from the upper Rio Paraguay/Paraná drainage in Paraguay and from the Río Guárico drainage of Venezuela. It is a fish of quiet water rather than fast current: it favours the margins and backwaters of lowland rivers and streams, floodplain lakes, flooded forest, and the freshwaters of coastal swamps and estuaries, always over soft bottoms it can work for food. Its preferred substrates are sand and fine sediment; in the wild it spends the night in very shallow water along riverbanks, where collectors take it by dipnet from the shore. It is not tied to a particular water type — the species turns up in white-, black- and clearwater rivers alike, though it is caught more often in clearwater stretches than in the sediment-laden main channels. The water it lives in is warm, soft and acidic to near-neutral — FishBase gives a pH band of 6.3–7.0 and a hardness of 5–10 dH, and in-situ measurements from collecting localities run even softer: on the Rio Momon near Iquitos, Peru, Lee Newman recorded fish in water of about 84 °F, 1 °dH and pH 6.5. Temperatures in its habitats span the warm Amazonian range of roughly 75–86 °F. As a shallow-margin and backwater fish it is found at modest depths, typically within the upper metre or two of the water column.
Feeding
This is the archetypal "eartheater": the fish takes a mouthful of sand, churns it, and passes the load across its gill rakers so that edible items — chironomid and other insect larvae, micro-crustaceans, small invertebrates, detritus, and even fruit and seeds that fall into the water — are retained while the cleaned grains are expelled through the mouth and gill openings. FishBase summarises the diet as fruit seeds, crustaceans and insects taken by digging into the substrate, and assigns the species a trophic level near 3.1. Field gut-content work complicates the tidy "sand-sifter" picture, however: in a study of Rio Negro specimens reported by Kullander and Ferreira (1988), about 85 percent of Satanoperca jurupari examined had eaten fish — small fishes, including young cichlids, made up roughly half the gut contents in both high and low water — while sand grains turned up in only a minority of fish and contributed little to gut volume. By the same study the closely related Satanoperca lilith was the heavier sand-sifter of the two. So while the winnowing, gill-raker sorting mechanism is genuine and central to the genus, Satanoperca jurupari in nature is better read as an opportunistic benthic forager that combines sediment-sifting with active predation on small prey. In a community it occupies the soft-sediment and leaf-litter floor, constantly reworking the top layer of sand.
Mating
Outside breeding Satanoperca jurupari is gregarious and notably peaceful, and the species is best kept and observed as a group; pairs form from within a shoal rather than being imposed. Because the sexes are externally almost identical and the fish take roughly two years to mature, recognising a pair takes patience — keepers watch for a female filling out with eggs and for the lateral and frontal displays, exaggerated swimming, branchiostegal-flaring and "sifting" displays that precede spawning. In the classic biparental model a male stakes out and defends a territory around a firm surface, courts a ripe female, and the two then jointly defend the site through a prolonged courtship. The Peruvian population documented by Lee Newman behaved differently and more aggressively: a territorial male solicited a female, spawned with her, then drove her off and courted others — effectively polygamous — and the brooding female was harried relentlessly by both the male and the rest of the group. In either mode the pre-spawning aggression is modest by cichlid standards and rarely lethal, but the harassment of a mouthbrooding female is the main obstacle to seeing a spawn through in a crowded tank.
Breeding
Satanoperca jurupari is, across most of its range, a delayed (larvophilous) biparental mouthbrooder — the reproductive mode that defines the jurupari species-group. A pair cleans a firm surface (in the wild often a movable object such as a submerged leaf, as Cichocki documented), the female lays the eggs and the male fertilises them, and the eggs are guarded and fanned on the substrate for roughly 24–48 hours; the parents then take the yolk-sac larvae into the mouth for further incubation, releasing free-swimming fry a few days later and continuing to offer the mouth as a refuge for some three to four weeks. Both parents typically share buccal duty, the female taking the larger role. The species deviates from this template in at least one population: the Peruvian fish observed by Newman were immediate (ovophilous) mouthbrooders that picked up only a small clutch of large eggs — as few as 4–8 per pass, around 30 in total — directly off the spawning surface within minutes of laying, with the female (and briefly the male) brooding from the egg stage. Newman read this, together with the larger and fewer eggs, as evidence that reproductive modality is a plastic, population-specific trait within Satanoperca rather than a fixed genus character. (FishBase's flat description of the species as an ovophile mouthbrooder reflects this Peruvian account and should not be taken to overturn the predominant delayed-brooding pattern reported elsewhere.) Wild clutches and brood sizes are small for a cichlid of this size — tens of fry rather than hundreds — and the long, protective mouthbrooding period is the trade-off.
In the aquarium
The demon eartheater is one of the more rewarding large South American cichlids for a well-set-up community, and it is not difficult to keep — only to breed reliably. It is a shoaling fish at heart, so it should be kept in a group of five or more rather than as a lone individual or a single pair; in a group the social tension is diffused and natural behaviour emerges. A group of adults needs a long tank, on the order of 59 in / about 120 US gal or more, with an emphasis on floor area rather than height.
The single non-negotiable requirement is a deep bed of soft sand. This is a fish whose entire feeding behaviour is sand-sifting; over gravel it cannot express that behaviour and coarse substrate drawn into the gills can injure it. Fine silica or play sand, several centimetres deep, is correct. Décor can be sparse and naturalistic — driftwood, a few smooth roots, leaf litter, and subdued lighting all suit it — and open swimming space over the sand should be preserved. Sturdy or floating plants are fine, but anything rooted shallowly will be undermined by the digging.
Water should mirror the warm, soft, slightly acidic backwaters it comes from: temperature around 79–86 °F, pH from about 5.5 to 7.0 (the lower, softer end favoured for breeding condition), and low to moderate hardness. That said, jurupari is arguably the hardiest member of its genus on water chemistry: unlike softer-water relatives such as Satanoperca leucosticta, it can be maintained long-term in hard (up to about 20° dGH), slightly alkaline water without the skin problems that plague its more delicate congeners — useful headroom for keepers without soft tap water, even though soft, acidic conditions remain the better target for colour and breeding condition. The species is sensitive to dissolved waste and benefits from generous filtration and large, regular water changes, but it is a fish of calm water, so filter returns should be baffled to avoid strong current. Feeding is easy: although it forages from the bottom in the wild, it readily learns to take sinking pellets, frozen and live foods (bloodworms, chopped earthworm, brine shrimp, Mysis), and flake at the surface. A varied diet over a clean sand bed produces the best colour and condition.
Temperament makes it an unusually good citizen. Demon eartheaters are peaceful toward other species and will not bother anything too large to be swallowed; ideal companions are other calm South Americans — tetras and other characins, Corydoras and other catfishes, headstanders, angelfish, severums, and peaceful cichlids including other eartheaters. They are poor candidates for a tank with aggressive or boisterous cichlids, which will outcompete them at feeding and intimidate them out of breeding. The chief husbandry mistakes are keeping them too few (a single fish languishes), keeping them over gravel, and confusing them at point of sale with Satanoperca leucosticta or other juruparoids — buyers should check the face for the absence of pearly spots.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Satanoperca jurupari as Least Concern. The assessment was carried out by Renata Guimarães Frederico on 21 November 2020 and published in 2023; the population trend is recorded as unknown. The species' security rests on its very wide distribution across the Amazon basin and its tolerance of a broad range of lowland habitats, which insulate it far better than the basin's many narrow-range endemics. It carries no CITES listing and is harvested for the ornamental trade and, locally, as a minor commercial food fish, at levels the assessment does not flag as a population-level threat. Against this, the Amazon basin as a whole faces accelerating freshwater pressures — dam construction that fragments rivers and alters the flood pulse, deforestation, mining and associated mercury contamination, and overfishing — none documented as a specific danger to this particular cichlid, but the broader backdrop against which its long-term outlook should be read.
