Satanoperca daemon is a large, exacting blackwater eartheater of the upper Rio Negro and the Orinoco, instantly known by the pair of inky blotches on its flanks and the ocellated spot on its tail base — the "three spots" that give it its common name. It is the type species of the so-called spotted-demonfish group, set apart from the silvery jurupari-type eartheaters not only by those markings but by its reproduction: where the jurupari group are mouthbrooders, Satanoperca daemon is a substrate spawner that buries its eggs in clean gravel and fans them from above. A tireless sand-sifter and one of the most beautiful — and most demanding — South American cichlids, it has a long reputation for collapsing in anything but soft, acidic, scrupulously clean water.

Taxonomy & naming

The spotted demonfish was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Johann Jakob Heckel in 1840 as Geophagus daemon, on Johann Natterer's material from the Rio Negro at Marabitanas (Maribitanos) in Amazonas, Brazil, which remains the type locality. Günther erected the genus Satanoperca in 1862 for the "naked-dorsal" juruparoid eartheaters, but the name fell in and out of use until Sven Kullander resurrected it in his 1986 monograph on the cichlids of the Peruvian Amazon, where daemon was returned to Satanoperca on a suite of distinguishing characters. Within the genus, daemon anchors the "spotted demonfish" trio alongside Satanoperca acuticeps and Satanoperca lilith — fish bearing bold dark blotches on the flank — as opposed to the silvery, unspotted "juruparoid" group (Satanoperca jurupari, Satanoperca leucosticta, Satanoperca pappaterra and relatives). The spotted forms were long confused under the single name daemon: in 1988 Kullander and Ferreira showed that Gosse's nominal daemon actually comprised two species, splitting off the single-spotted Amazonian fish as Satanoperca lilith and restricting daemon to the two-spotted form of the upper Negro and Orinoco. The genus has continued to grow, with Satanoperca curupira and Satanoperca setepele described in 2018 and 2022; daemon, however, has stood as a valid species under its original epithet since 1840.

Morphology

Satanoperca daemon is a large, elongate eartheater with the genus's characteristic big head, prominent eyes and a sub-terminal, protractile "horse-faced" mouth — features that lead Venezuelan fishers to call it cara de caballo, horse-face. Reported maxima vary: FishBase lists it as reaching about 10 in, while wild-caught adults and importers' stock are recorded up to roughly 12 in total length; in the aquarium it commonly tops out around 10 in. The body is a warm bronze-to-silver that shifts with mood, substrate and water colour, often overlaid with iridescent green-blue spangling on the head and gill cover. The diagnostic pattern is its namesake set of three dark marks: two prominent black blotches on each flank below the lateral line, plus a black spot on the upper caudal peduncle that extends onto the tail and is ringed by a bluish-white collar to form an ocellus. This ocellated tail-spot cleanly separates daemon from the unspotted jurupari group, in which the peduncular blotch is confined to the upper half of the caudal base and is not ringed. The single-spotted Satanoperca lilith and three-blotched Satanoperca acuticeps differ in the number of flank marks. The species is essentially isomorphic — males and females cannot be told apart on colour or finnage — though ripe females become noticeably deeper and fuller in the belly, and males average slightly larger though not necessarily longer.

Habitat

Satanoperca daemon is a blackwater specialist of the upper Rio Negro and the Orinoco basin, ranging across Brazil, Colombia and Venezuela; it apparently crosses between the two basins via the Casiquiare, and most aquarium fish are exported from blackwater habitats of Colombia and the Venezuelan llanos. Weidner's compiled locality records give a sense of how widely scattered these blackwater populations are: in Colombia, the Rio Inírida near El Remanso, the Laguna Cerro Mavecure, and the Rio Guarrojo in the Rio Vichada drainage; in Venezuela, the Rio Guariquito drainage in Guárico state and Caño de Quiribana; along the connecting Rio Casiquiare and near Solano; and through the Rio Negro proper and its tributaries, including the Rio Uapés and the Igarapé Mapiri on the Rio Trombetas — though records from the vicinity of Lago Manacapuru may in fact involve the closely related, single-spotted Satanoperca lilith. The underwater photographer Ivan Mikolji, who has observed the species across dozens of expeditions, reports it as one of the commonest cichlids in rivers south of the Apure in Venezuela, occurring in black, clear, "green" and "blue" waters over open sandy bottoms with little or no vegetation and essentially no rock. It favours slow-moving, lotic stretches rather than fast current, where its food settles on the bottom, and groups bask in sunlit shallows — though Weidner notes one documented exception, from Stalsberg's fieldwork near El Remanso in Colombia's Guainía state, where the species turned up in distinctly fast-flowing water; whether this reflects a temporary or local departure from its usual habitat, or a broader tolerance of current than generally assumed, remains unresolved. In the Inírida region, AMAZONAS field reports place daemon and Biotodoma wavrini together as the most numerous eartheaters in pure blackwater caños roughly a metre deep over open sand. The defining feature of its environment is the water chemistry: Goulding, Carvalho and Ferreira (Rio Negro: Rich Life in Poor Waters, 1988) characterise these Rio Negro blackwaters as extremely soft (often under 1 dH), strongly acidic (pH around 3.5–5.3) and stained tea-brown with dissolved tannins and humic acids, at warm temperatures. Adults are recorded along wooded shorelines over sandy beaches and may also shelter among root tangles and plant stands, while juveniles can be collected from leaf litter in the manner of dwarf cichlids; comprehensive field observations of the species' habits, however, remain scarce.

Feeding

Like all Satanoperca, daemon is a benthic sand-sifter. It takes mouthfuls of substrate, sorts the edible fraction with its gill rakers and expels the cleaned sand and inedible debris through the mouth and opercular openings, leaving the bottom of an aquarium pocked like a lunar landscape by morning. Its specialised, protractile sub-terminal mouth is built for vacuuming the sediment rather than for snatching food from the surface; Mikolji notes that, unlike many river fish, it does not feed on terrestrial insects falling onto the water. The wild diet, drawn from what lives in and on the substrate, is a benthic-invertivore mix: micro-crustaceans, periphyton, small worms, aquatic-insect larvae (including beetle and dipteran larvae), the occasional tiny fish or fish eggs, plus incidental plant and detrital matter. FishBase places it at a trophic level near 3.1. In the community it is the quiet engine of the open sand flats, constantly turning over and aerating the top layer of sediment as it forages.

Mating

Outside breeding, Satanoperca daemon is strikingly peaceful and sociable for so large a cichlid, and is most often seen in pairs or small groups of up to about eight. Juveniles "play-fight" with vigorous mouth-wrestling, jaw-locking and fin-flaring that rarely does any harm, and adults maintain close social bonds. As with most Neotropical cichlids, reproduction changes the temperature: a fish becomes territorial and pugnacious in courtship, though in daemon the damage is usually limited to torn fins and the odd lost scale. Because the sexes are isomorphic, pairs form best by letting a group of juveniles grow up together and sort themselves out. From Lee Newman's captive observations, the female typically initiates pit-digging and actively courts a male, while the male concentrates on driving other fish out of the pit area. Courtship is the genus-typical sequence of reciprocal lateral displays, head-twitching, mouth-tugging and branchiostegal flaring, accompanied by days of heavy excavation — the pair dig pits clear to the tank bottom, heaping the surrounding sand high against the glass. Newman's captive observations describe the choreography in more detail: the bonded pair position themselves side by side and head-to-tail, jerking their heads and flaring their opercula at one another, with occasional bouts of mouth-fighting worked in. Other, unpaired daemon in the same tank are not left alone — the mated pair actively harasses them, and confrontations follow, with the unpaired fish generally beating a hasty retreat rather than pressing the matter. This pre-spawning digging, rather than any cleaned surface, is the prelude to a daemon spawning.

Breeding

Here Satanoperca daemon parts company sharply with the mouthbrooding eartheaters it is sold alongside: it is a substrate spawner that buries its eggs. This is the key reproductive distinction within the genus — the jurupari group are mouthbrooders (delayed in Satanoperca leucosticta, immediate in some jurupari populations), whereas the spotted-demonfish group spawns on the bottom and tends the brood in the open. After days of pit excavation, the female makes several "dry runs" over the cleaned floor of the pit and then deposits adhesive, light-grey, ovoid eggs about 0.5 in across in passes of roughly 15–18, the male moving in to fertilise after each pass; over about an hour and a half this builds a circular plaque of some 150–200 eggs. What follows is unique among captively spawned Satanoperca: several hours after spawning the parents bury the clutch under three to four centimetres of substrate, and the female then stations herself over the buried nest, leaning to one side and fanning steadily with one pectoral fin while the male patrols the territory. Free-swimming fry take newly hatched brine shrimp but are, like the adults, very sensitive to water quality. Captive spawnings are notoriously prone to failure, and the few that succeed point to two prerequisites: blackwater-grade chemistry and the right nest substrate. The only well-documented successful breeding, by Eckinger (1987), used water of pH 4.5, about 2 dH and 86 °F over gravel of 0.5 in grain — coarse enough for the buried eggs to develop, since the very fine sand used for everyday foraging suffocates the clutch. Importers note that the spawning pit alone may reach 19.5 in across, so successful breeding demands a very large, well-floored tank.

In the aquarium

Satanoperca daemon is a beautiful fish with a deserved reputation as one of the more demanding South American cichlids — emphatically not a beginner's eartheater. The single most important factor in keeping it is water quality. The species is exquisitely sensitive to dissolved-waste accumulation: poor conditions bring on head-and-lateral-line erosion (neuromast "pitting") and the often-fatal "neotropical bloat," both of which afflict daemon far more readily than the hardier jurupari-group eartheaters. Excellent biological filtration, low nitrogen and phosphate, a low bacterial count and large, frequent water changes are non-negotiable. Pitting caught early is usually reversible through aggressive improvements in water quality; bloat, once established, generally is not.

Water should mirror the soft, acidic Rio Negro blackwaters the fish comes from. Keepers and collectors have long aimed for soft, tannin-stained water around pH 6 or lower (Newman maintained his fish at pH 4.3–4.5), achieved with reverse-osmosis water re-acidified and "blackened" with peat, bogwood, oak or almond leaves or a commercial blackwater extract. More recent experience from importers (Aquarium Glaser) suggests daemon can be maintained and even bred in medium-hard, slightly alkaline water provided water quality, diet and a settled group of conspecifics are right — but soft and acidic remains the safe target, and is close to essential for spawning. Temperature must be kept high: 82–86 °F in routine care, with successful spawnings reported at 86 °F and above. These are warm-water fish and decline below about 79 °F.

The tank must be large and, above all, long: a metre and a half is a sensible minimum for adults, and given the size the species reaches and its preference for company, a group is best housed in nothing under about 130 US gal, with a wide, open floor more important than height. Fine sand (grain ~0.5 in) is essential as the everyday substrate for the fish's constant sifting — without it they stress and waste away — but anyone hoping to breed them must also supply a patch of fine gravel (0.5 in) in which the buried clutch can actually develop. Décor should be simple and open: scattered waterlogged wood and roots for cover — or a layer of floating plants for shade, plus a few hardy rooted species such as Vallisneria, Java fern or Cryptocoryne usteriana for a touch of green — subdued lighting with a shaded corner, and gentle flow; filtration should not be too powerful, since these fish normally avoid strong current in the wild and are stressed by it in the tank.

Diet is the easy part in principle, though it repays some care in practice. Juveniles take almost any standard food; adults do best on sinking pellets, foodsticks and freeze-dried fare plus frozen and live items — bloodworm, glassworm, brine shrimp, small earthworms and crustaceans — though despite their size these fish actually prefer small items such as Mysis, Artemia and mosquito larvae over chunks of fish or krill, and frozen crustaceans in particular are prone to being expelled back out through the gills rather than swallowed if not offered in small enough pieces, so it pays to confirm food is genuinely being eaten and not just disturbed. A balanced, vitamin-rich diet is treated as close to essential for long-term colour and health; the genus is prone to bloat on too much rich animal protein, so a substantial share of vegetable matter (spirulina, blanched peas, spinach) and small, frequent portions with an occasional fast day are wise. Temperamentally daemon is a gift: remarkably peaceful and indifferent even to dwarf cichlids, it makes a poor competitor against fast, greedy characins but coexists well with calm, non-substrate cichlids such as Pterophyllum, Mesonauta and Uaru. It is best kept in a group of six or more so pairs can form and individuals feel secure, but avoid choosing tankmates that are too large or pushy — daemon is not a strong self-defender, and in the company of oversized fish it can simply waste away rather than compete for food. The common ways keepers lose this fish are all husbandry failures — too-cold or dirty water, an immature tank, excess current, or a diet that triggers bloat — rather than aggression.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Satanoperca daemon as Least Concern (assessed 21 November 2020 by R.G. Frederico, published 2023). The assessment cites a wide distribution across the Amazon, upper Negro and Orinoco basins in Brazil, Colombia and Venezuela, and finds no evidence of significant decline despite limited data on population size; the species is regarded as uncommon but not threatened, and the assessment lists no specific major threats and no CITES listing. It is harvested for the ornamental trade — exported chiefly from Colombia and Venezuela, and valued by specialist keepers — but at a level the assessment does not flag as a population-level concern. As a blackwater fish of the Negro and Orinoco, its longer-term prospects are tied to the health of those basins, where deforestation, mining (and associated mercury contamination), damming and shifting flood-pulse regimes are degrading freshwater habitats across the region; none of these is documented as a present danger to this particular species, but they form the backdrop against which its status should be read.
