Hybridization watchi

Saxatilia sipaliwini is a slender pike cichlid known only from the Sipaliwini River in the far south of Suriname, a headwater of the upper Corantijn (Courantyne) system draining the Guiana Shield. One of three species Alex Ploeg described in his 1987 review of Surinamese Crenicichla, it belongs to the saxatilis group of medium-sized spangled pikes and is separated from its close relatives chiefly by locality and a muted colour pattern. Restricted to a single river system on the Sipaliwini savanna and almost never seen in the aquarium trade, it remains one of the most poorly known pikes of the Guianas.

Taxonomy & naming

Saxatilia sipaliwini was described by the Dutch ichthyologist Alex H. C. Ploeg in 1987, in his review of the genus Crenicichla in Suriname (Beaufortia 37(5): 73–98). The description appears on page 90, with the fish figured on the upper part of Plate 2. The holotype, an adult male catalogued as RMNH 30561 at the Naturalis collection in Leiden, was taken with a series of paratypes (held at RMNH and the Zoological Museum Amsterdam) from the Sipaliwini River near the Sipaliwini airstrip, in the Corantijn River system of southern Suriname — the type locality that gives the fish its name. In the same paper Ploeg also named Crenicichla coppenamensis and Crenicichla nickeriensis and treated the seven Crenicichla then known from Suriname (alongside the previously described albopunctata, saxatilis, lugubris and multispinosa). He placed sipaliwini in the saxatilis group of medium-sized 'spangled' pikes and noted that, because the members of this complex differ only slightly in body proportions, the species are separated largely by geographic range and colour pattern. Catalog of Fishes lists no junior synonyms. The genus itself has since been split: in an integrative phylogenetic revision of the pike cichlids, Varella, Loeb, Lima and Kullander (2023) transferred this and many other saxatilis-group species to the resurrected genus Saxatilia, so the fish is also seen in the literature as Saxatilia sipaliwini. That re-classification is recent and not yet universally adopted, and this atlas keeps the long-established Crenicichla heading while noting the proposed move.

Morphology

This is a typical mid-sized pike cichlid: an elongate, cylindrical, sub-torpedo body with a long head, a large terminal mouth lined with fine conical teeth, and the dorsal and anal fins set far back to give the characteristic 'pike' silhouette built for ambush. Reported maximum size is modest for the genus — FishBase gives 7 in standard length, and Ploeg's holotype male measured about 5 in without the tail; the original series did not exceed roughly 7 in SL. Colour in preserved material is subdued, which is part of what distinguishes sipaliwini from its sympatric-free relatives. Ploeg recorded that males carry only a vague lateral band, a black humeral (shoulder) spot that in adult males sits squarely on the lateral line, and a black spot on the caudal-fin base; the dark preorbital and postorbital stripes that mark many saxatilis-group pikes are weak in this species. Live fish, judging from related saxatilis-group pikes, are brownish to olive-grey over the back, paler below, often with scattered pale 'spangles' on the flanks and faint vertical barring. Sexual dimorphism follows the genus pattern: males grow larger and longer-bodied, while ripe females are deeper-bellied and typically develop a contrasting patch — often a row of light-ringed ocelli or colour in the dorsal fin and a reddened belly — when in breeding condition.

Habitat

Saxatilia sipaliwini has one of the most restricted ranges of any Guianan pike: it is documented only from the Sipaliwini River, a tributary of the upper Corantijn (Courantyne) basin draining the Sipaliwini savanna in the extreme south of Suriname, close to the Brazilian frontier. Ploeg found it nowhere else, and noted that — unlike most Surinamese pikes — it was not collected alongside any other Crenicichla, occupying its headwater system essentially alone. The whole drainage lies within the Guianas freshwater ecoregion (FEOW 311), the assemblage of independent rivers running off the northern and eastern Guiana Shield, an ecoregion noted for very high fish endemism. These are clear, warm, soft and acidic Shield waters: upland streams of moderate gradient running over sand, gravel and bedrock, broken by rapids and pools, and bordered by gallery forest and open savanna. Like other saxatilis-group pikes the species is a fish of structured margins — submerged wood, root tangles, leaf litter and rock — where it hangs motionless waiting to ambush prey. No in-situ chemistry has been published specifically for this fish, but the soft, acidic, warm (roughly pH 5.5–7.0 and 77–86 °F) conditions typical of upper-Corantijn Shield streams are the relevant envelope. Because surveys of this remote savanna are sparse, the documented depth is simply the shallow stream-and-margin band (about 0–7 ft) in which Guiana Shield pikes are normally caught.

Feeding

Pike cichlids are predators, and Saxatilia sipaliwini is no exception. The genus is built for lie-in-wait ambush hunting: a long jaw full of small gripping teeth and a body that can launch a short, explosive strike from cover. Saxatilis-group pikes of this size feed mainly on aquatic insects and their larvae, small fishes, shrimps and other invertebrates, taking whatever moving prey will fit the mouth. FishBase places the species at a trophic level of about 3.3, consistent with a carnivore that mixes invertebrates and small vertebrates rather than a strict fish-eater. No stomach-content study has been published for sipaliwini specifically, so this account rests on the well-documented diet of its close relatives in the saxatilis complex. In its headwater community it functions as a mid-sized predator of the wood- and rock-margin zones, keeping to ambush stations among submerged structure.

Mating

The reproductive behaviour of Saxatilia sipaliwini has not been observed in the wild or, so far as the published record shows, in captivity — it is essentially unknown for this particular species. What can be said comes from the saxatilis group as a whole, which is among the better-documented sections of the genus. These pikes form monogamous pairs that bond and hold a joint territory before spawning. Pair formation can be fraught: the male is usually the larger fish and an unready or mismatched female may be harried or killed, so in nature a female advertises readiness — typically by intensifying belly colour and displaying — before the pair settles. Once bonded, both fish defend a territory centred on a chosen cave or crevice, the female taking the leading role at the nest and the male patrolling its perimeter. This combination of strong pairing and serious intraspecific aggression is characteristic of the whole spangled-pike lineage.

Breeding

Breeding has not been documented for Saxatilia sipaliwini in the wild, and the species is so rarely kept that no aquarium spawning report is available. Its reproduction is therefore inferred from the saxatilis group, to which it belongs and which contains some of the most readily bred pikes in the hobby. Like its relatives it is expected to be a biparental cave (substrate) spawner: the pair cleans the inner wall or ceiling of a crevice, undercut or cavity, and the female attaches a clutch of adhesive eggs there. Both parents guard — the female tending and fanning the eggs, the male defending the wider territory. After hatching, the wrigglers are moved to pits and the free-swimming fry are shepherded as a school by both adults, which continue to guard them for some weeks. A precise clutch count for this species has not been published; saxatilis-group pikes of comparable size typically lay on the order of a few hundred eggs (roughly 100–500), a genus-typical figure that should be read as an estimate rather than a measured value for sipaliwini. Soft, warm, slightly acidic water and the onset of the rains are the usual spawning triggers in related pikes.

In the aquarium

Saxatilia sipaliwini is, for practical purposes, not an aquarium fish: it is a microendemic of a remote southern-Suriname river that essentially never enters the ornamental trade, and there is no established body of keeping experience specific to it. Anyone who did encounter it would treat it as a typical medium-sized saxatilis-group pike, a section of the genus that is otherwise well regarded as hardy and comparatively manageable. On that basis a single pair would want a tank of at least about 47 in (roughly 55–65 US gal), longer being better, aquascaped with abundant cover — driftwood, root tangles, rockwork and at least one defensible cave or length of pipe per fish — over a sand or fine-gravel bed. Robust filtration with gentle-to-moderate flow suits a fish of clear Shield streams, and the species should be given soft to moderately soft, slightly acidic to neutral water (about pH 5.5–7.0) at a warm 77–86 °F, mirroring its native upper-Corantijn habitat. Diet is straightforward for a pike: meaty foods such as earthworms, prawn, mysis, bloodworm and small whole fish or pellets, fed to condition rather than to bloat. The usual cautions for the group apply — pikes are predatory and territorial, will eat tankmates small enough to swallow, and intraspecific aggression around pairing can be lethal, so a planned pairing in a large, well-structured tank with sightline breaks and escape routes is essential. None of this is documented for sipaliwini itself; it is the sensible default for the lineage, offered honestly as inference rather than tested husbandry.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Saxatilia sipaliwini as Data Deficient (DD), assessed on 27 December 2020 (published 2020) by Donald Taphorn and Douglas Rodríguez-Olarte. The Data Deficient category reflects exactly the problem this fish poses: it is known from a single, seldom-surveyed river system, with too little information on its distribution, population and ecological tolerances to judge its extinction risk. It carries no CITES or CMS listing, and it is of no fisheries interest. A naturally tiny range is, however, an intrinsic vulnerability — a species confined to one headwater drainage has no refuge if that drainage is degraded. The upper Corantijn and the Sipaliwini savanna remain relatively remote and lightly developed, but the broader Guiana Shield faces mounting pressure from gold mining (and associated mercury contamination and sedimentation), deforestation and infrastructure expansion, any of which could affect a narrow-range endemic disproportionately. Better survey work in southern Suriname is the obvious prerequisite to moving this fish out of Data Deficient and onto a firmer conservation footing.
