Taxonomy & naming
Serranochromis spei was described by the British ichthyologist Ethelwynn Trewavas in 1964, in her revision of the genus published in the Annales du Musée Royal de l'Afrique Centrale, Tervuren (Série in-8o, Sciences Zoologiques No. 125). The holotype (MRAC 75147) and three paratypes (MRAC 75157-59) came from Lake Kafakumba, given in the Catalog of Fishes as approximately 9°40'S, 23°40'E, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Catalog of Fishes lists the species as valid as Serranochromis spei Trewavas 1964, in the family Cichlidae, subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae, with no junior synonyms; its validity has been upheld by Skelton & Teugels (1991) and again in the genus key of Stauffer, Bills & Skelton (2021). The specific name spei is the genitive of the Latin spes, 'hope' — most plausibly an allusion to hope or expectation rather than a place or person, in keeping with Trewavas's occasional use of evocative Latin epithets. The genus Serranochromis was erected by C. Tate Regan in 1920 and revised in full by Trewavas in this same 1964 work; it belongs to the serranochromine lineage of riverine haplochromines that radiated across the Zambezi, Okavango, Cunene and upper Congo systems. Serranochromis spei is the lineage's representative in the Congo basin, one of only a handful of Serranochromis to occur north of the Zambezi-Okavango watershed. Among the genus it is distinguished by a relatively long jaw (the lower jaw 53.5–57.2 % of head length, longer than in the Angolan largemouths) and the exposed, widely spaced caniniform teeth and anal-fin ocelli shared across the lineage.
Morphology
Serranochromis spei is one of the larger members of the genus, reaching about 12 in in standard length (FishBase) — a big predatory cichlid. The body is the genus norm: fusiform, robust and laterally compressed, deepest around the start of the dorsal fin. The defining feature is the mouth: large, terminal and protrusible, with a notably long lower jaw (53.5–57.2 % of head length, the longest among the species treated alongside it in the 2021 genus key), armed with exposed, widely spaced caniniform teeth set in bands on each jaw — the classic equipment of a fish that seizes and holds slippery prey. The head is large and the eyes well developed; the long-based dorsal fin carries many spines followed by soft rays, with three anal spines and the egg-spot ocelli on the anal fin typical of haplochromine courtship. Detailed published meristics are sparse in the popular literature, the species having been little revisited since Trewavas's description. Coloration in life is presumed to follow the genus pattern of a silvery to olive body with darker markings and a brassy sheen, lighter below; as in other mouthbrooding haplochromines, sexual dimorphism is expected in breeding condition, with males developing brighter nuptial coloration and more prominent anal-fin ocelli, though the specific nuptial dress of Serranochromis spei is not well documented.
Habitat
Serranochromis spei is a fish of the upper Congo basin in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. FishBase records it from Lake Kafakumba — on a tributary of the Kasai, in the middle Congo River basin — and from Lake Kabongo (=Lac Boya), in the Lake Upemba depression of the upper Congo (Lualaba) basin. These are lake and floodplain habitats of the central African interior: shallow, vegetated, slow-water systems of the Kasai headwaters and the Upemba wetlands, the kind of structured, sluggish environment in which a sit-and-wait largemouth predator can ambush prey. FishBase classes the species as demersal, a bottom-associated fish of these tropical freshwater lakes. The Upemba depression in particular is a vast complex of shallow lakes and marshes on the upper Lualaba, a recognised centre of aquatic biodiversity, and the presence of Serranochromis spei there marks the northern, Congo-basin edge of the largemouth genus's range. Published in-situ water chemistry is scant; these are warm, tropical-interior waters, and by regional standards suitable conditions would be warm and roughly neutral. The species' association with isolated interior lakes — Kafakumba in the Kasai system, Kabongo in the Upemba — is the geographic signature of a relict, drainage-isolated population.
Feeding
Serranochromis spei is an ambush piscivore, in keeping with the whole genus and with its long, canine-toothed jaws. FishBase places it at an estimated trophic level of about 4.0, marking it as a top-end predator that feeds substantially on other fishes. The large, protrusible jaws and exposed, widely spaced canine teeth are the equipment of a fish that seizes slippery prey and holds it, rather than rasping or sifting; across the genus the larger species take smaller fishes supplemented by aquatic insects, snails and crustaceans. In the vegetated lake and floodplain habitats it occupies — Lake Kafakumba and the Upemba lakes — Serranochromis spei would hunt from cover among the marginal weed, picking off the small fishes and invertebrates that shelter there, the classic strategy of the largemouths. Detailed gut-content studies specific to Serranochromis spei are lacking, so the precise prey spectrum is inferred from its anatomy, its high trophic position, and the documented diets of its relatives rather than directly observed.
Mating
The detailed reproductive behavior of Serranochromis spei has not been documented; what follows is drawn from the consistent pattern across Serranochromis and the serranochromine haplochromines. These are maternal mouthbrooders, breeding seasonally in step with the flood and rainfall cycle of the central African interior. Males develop bright nuptial coloration and the anal-fin ocelli, and take a territory, courting and displaying to females rather than forming a lasting pair bond. The egg-spot ocelli on the male's anal fin are the classic haplochromine courtship device: as the female mouths at the spots she is induced to take up the male's milt, fertilising the clutch she already carries. After spawning the male's involvement ends; parental investment falls entirely to the female, who carries and protects the brood. The vegetated margins of the lakes and floodplains the species favours provide both the spawning substrate and the cover in which a brooding female can shelter.
Breeding
Direct breeding observations of Serranochromis spei are lacking, but its mode is not in doubt: like all Serranochromis it is a maternal mouthbrooder. The female takes the fertilised eggs into her mouth and incubates them there through hatching and the early larval stage, the brood sheltered in the buccal cavity from the egg- and fry-predators of the lake; after release the fry may continue to shelter in her mouth when threatened, a hallmark of advanced haplochromine care. Clutch size has not been measured for this species; in the genus, fecundity is modest by cichlid standards — on the order of tens to a few hundred relatively large eggs, scaling with female size, the trade-off inherent to mouthbrooders, which sacrifice egg number for the heavy parental protection of oral incubation. As one of the larger species, a big female Serranochromis spei would sit toward the upper end of that range. Spawning is expected to be seasonal, tied to the rising-water phase of the upper Congo's annual cycle. Beyond this genus-level template, the specifics of egg number, incubation period and fry development in Serranochromis spei remain undocumented.
In the aquarium
Serranochromis spei is effectively unknown in the aquarium hobby. It is a large, range-restricted predator from remote interior lakes of the upper Congo basin, with no established presence in the ornamental trade, so any husbandry guidance can only be extrapolated from the genus. As a fish that can reach about 12 in, it would demand a very large tank — well into the hundreds of litres, with a long footprint and open swimming room — together with the slow-flowing or standing, well-vegetated conditions of its natural lake and floodplain habitat. Water should be kept warm and clean, roughly 72–82 °F and near neutral, with strong filtration and generous water changes to handle the waste load of a large piscivore. It would have to be fed as the predator it is, on meaty foods, and could not be trusted with any tankmate small enough to be swallowed; like other largemouths it would likely be intolerant of conspecifics outside of breeding. None of this has been tested for Serranochromis spei specifically. Given how little is known of the species and the remoteness of its range, it is best regarded as a wild fish to study rather than a target for the aquarium.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Serranochromis spei as Least Concern (assessed 16 February 2009). Despite being known from relatively few localities — Lake Kafakumba in the Kasai system and Lake Kabongo in the Upemba depression — the species occurs across a portion of the upper Congo basin large enough, and in habitat general enough, that it was not judged to meet the thresholds for a threat category at the time of assessment. The vast, remote and still relatively intact lake-and-wetland systems of the central Congo interior, including the protected Upemba complex, give the species a measure of buffering that its narrowly endemic Angolan congeners lack. That said, the assessment is now over a decade old, and the broad pressures on Congo-basin freshwaters — fishing, deforestation and catchment change, and localised pollution — apply here as elsewhere; the species is also genuinely under-studied, so its true range and population are imperfectly known. It carries no CITES or CMS listing. For now Least Concern stands as the formal status, but a modern survey of the Kasai and Upemba lakes would be valuable to confirm it.
