Taxonomy & naming
Teleogramma brichardi was described by the Belgian ichthyologist Max Poll in 1959 from the rapids near Kinsuka on the lower Congo (then lower Zaire) River, where the aquarium-fish exporter Pierre Brichard had collected the type material. The genus Teleogramma itself is older and not Poll's: it was erected by George Albert Boulenger in 1899 for the slender, rheophilic cichlids of the western Congo cataracts. Boulenger was so struck by the fish's uninterrupted, unbroken lateral line that he initially mistook the genus for a wrasse (a labrid) rather than a cichlid — an error embedded in the name itself. Teleogramma sits within the chromidotilapiine lineage, a primarily riverine radiation of West and Central African cichlids that originated in the late Eocene or early Oligocene; despite a superficial resemblance to the elongate rapids Lamprologus of the Congo and to Tanganyikan lamprologines, that likeness is convergence on a rheophilic body plan, not close kinship. For decades the genus was held to contain four species — Teleogramma brichardi, Teleogramma gracile, Teleogramma depressa and the Kasai-dwelling T. monogramma (Roberts & Stewart, 1976). A combined morphological and molecular study by Melanie Stiassny and Elizabeth Alter (American Museum Novitates, 2015) added a fifth, Teleogramma obamaorum, from the middle Congo, and in doing so restricted Teleogramma brichardi in the strict sense to specimens from the immediate vicinity of the type locality at the fishing village of Kinsuka, on the left bank of the lower Congo at the first rapids below Pool Malebo. Their analyses also recovered Teleogramma brichardi as the close relative of the T. monogramma and Teleogramma obamaorum lineage, within a genus whose internal branches are so short that species limits in the lower-Congo populations remain genuinely difficult to resolve.
Morphology
This is a small, extremely elongate cichlid, nearly cylindrical in cross-section and almost snake-like in profile — a body plan shared by unrelated rapids fishes the world over. FishBase gives a maximum of 3.5 in standard length (SL) and a maximum total length of about 4.5 in; aquarists report males reaching roughly 4.5 in SL, larger than age-matched females. Like other cataract cichlids (the African Steatocranus, Gobiocichla and fluviatile Lamprologus, and the analogous South American Teleocichla), Teleogramma carries a much-reduced swim bladder. The loss of buoyancy is the adaptation that lets the fish rest on the bottom unmoved by the current overhead, where a buoyant small fish would simply be swept away. Coloration is muted for most of the year — a brownish to slate grey, often vertically banded in two shades of greyish brown. The diagnostic detail is the uninterrupted lateral-line system that gave the genus its name; brichardi is distinguished from most congeners (except the flattened Teleogramma depressa) by its high count of pored lateral-line scales, on the order of 49 to 60. The species' most arresting feature appears only in breeding condition and is described under Mating below — a sexual dichromatism so marked that, as Stiassny and Alter noted, the absence of it is precisely what diagnoses the related Teleogramma obamaorum.
Habitat
Teleogramma brichardi is endemic to a short stretch of the lower Congo River near Kinsuka, southeast of Kinshasa, with records on both the Republic of the Congo and Democratic Republic of the Congo banks at the first major rapids downstream of Pool Malebo (Stanley Pool). Downstream it is replaced by congeners — Teleogramma gracile and Teleogramma depressa occur further down the cataract chain, while T. monogramma is confined to the Kasai, which joins the Congo above the brichardi locality. This is among the most extreme riverine habitats on the planet: the lower Congo drops over a series of rapids and cataracts in deep, fast, intensely oxygenated channels, the hydraulic forces strong enough to drive genetic divergence between fish populations on opposite banks. Teleogramma brichardi lives on and among rocky outcrops in this turbulent, well-oxygenated, fast-flowing water. Reported in-situ conditions are warm and soft — temperatures around 82–84 °F, very soft water with pH near 7–7.5, and, necessarily, a very high dissolved-oxygen content. FishBase lists a slightly cooler preferred-aquarium envelope of roughly 68–73 °F, pH 6.0–7.0 and 7–10 °dH, but the field reports point to warmer water in nature. Because direct underwater observation in such conditions is so difficult, much of what is known about the fish's wild life is, of necessity, inference.
Feeding
The natural diet of Teleogramma brichardi has not been documented in detail — a consequence of how nearly impossible it is to study feeding in a rapids torrent. It is best described as an opportunistic benthic invertivore: a bottom-foraging fish that takes the aquatic invertebrates and crustaceans of the rocky cataract floor, and FishBase places it at a trophic level of about 3.3. In captivity its appetites are plain enough. The species relishes live and frozen foods — Daphnia, chironomid (bloodworm) larvae and similar small invertebrates — and freshly imported wild fish seize and swallow whole earthworms without hesitation. The elongate, bottom-oriented body and reduced swim bladder mark it as a fish that works the substrate rather than the open water, picking food from rock surfaces and crevices in the same fast, well-oxygenated zone where it shelters and breeds.
Mating
Brichard's slender cichlid is a pair-bonding, monogamous species, and its courtship is governed by one of the clearest cases of sexual dichromatism among riverine cichlids. For most of the year the sexes look much alike — grey, vertically banded fish told apart chiefly by a constant marking on the tail. As a female ripens, she transforms: a large salmon-pink to red flush spreads from the pectoral region across the full depth of the belly to the vent and suffuses the lower part of the dorsal fin, while the breeding male stays a uniform grey. Both sexes carry a white outer margin on the dorsal fin, but it resolves the sexes unambiguously on the tail — in the male the white edge continues as a narrow band along the upper edge of the caudal, whereas in the female it broadens into a conspicuous, forward-pointing white triangle (a 'blaze') at the upper base of the tail. (Curiously, this white blaze reads as red in preserved museum specimens, which misled earlier workers; in living fish it is unmistakably pure white.) Pairs are territorial, and the establishment of a bond is often preceded by real aggression before the fish settle, a female courting a male as she comes into condition. The reversal of the usual cichlid signalling — the female, not the male, being the gaudier sex — is the species' most-studied behavioural trait.
Breeding
Teleogramma brichardi is a cave spawner. The pair selects a sheltered crevice, cave or overhang in the rockwork and the female attaches a small clutch to the ceiling or wall of the cavity, where the eggs incubate in the steady wash of oxygen-rich water. Clutches are small for a cichlid: FishBase records 10–30 eggs, and Stiassny and Alter found ripe females of brichardi and the related T. monogramma carrying an average of about 25–35 eggs in paired ovaries. This is a hidden, secretive form of reproduction well suited to a fish of dark crevices in a violent current — far removed from the open substrate-spawning of pond and lake cichlids. The female broods inside the cave and tends the eggs and wrigglers while the male holds and defends the surrounding territory, and the pronounced breeding dress of the female is thought to function in this close-quarters cave context. The fry are guarded by the parents after hatching. In aquaria the species has been bred by specialists, but it is not free-spawning: success hinges on a settled, well-matched pair, clean and strongly oxygenated water, and an abundance of caves and crevices that reproduce the sheltered spawning sites of the rapids.
In the aquarium
Teleogramma brichardi is a fish for the dedicated rapids-cichlid keeper rather than the general aquarist — uncommon in the trade, intermediate in difficulty, and demanding in its need for flow and water quality. The single most important thing to understand is that this is a rheophile: it evolved in a torrent, and it does poorly without strong current and very high dissolved oxygen. A tank should be furnished as a river manifold — powerheads or a closed-loop / spray-bar return generating brisk, well-distributed flow over a hardscape of rounded stones, flat slabs, ledges and caves. A footprint of at least 47 in is sensible for a small group; sources cite minimums from roughly 25–55 US gal, but the larger and longer the tank, the easier territories are to manage. Fine sand or smooth gravel suits the substrate, and dense planting is unnecessary — its natural habitat is scoured nearly bare of vegetation. Filtration should be generous and the water kept pristine, with regular changes; a tight cover is wise, as these are athletic, exploratory fish.
Water chemistry should track the soft, warm, oxygen-saturated conditions of the lower Congo. Soft water at pH roughly 6.0–7.5 works well; reported field temperatures run warm (82–84 °F), though the fish is kept successfully across a 68–82 °F band, and what matters far more than a few degrees is current and oxygen. Feeding is straightforward: a varied diet built around live and frozen invertebrates — bloodworm, Daphnia, brine shrimp, chopped earthworm — accepted alongside quality sinking pellets and flake.
The critical husbandry issue is temperament. Teleogramma brichardi forms strong monogamous pairs but is territorial and can be sharply aggressive, especially as pairs form and during spawning, and confined quarters concentrate that aggression. A bonded pair in a roomy, cave-rich tank is the safest configuration; a one-male, several-female group in a long tank with broken sight-lines can work but needs close watching, as a dominant fish will harass subordinates. Tankmates should be peaceful, similarly sized riverine species that tolerate strong flow — other rapids cichlids such as Steatocranus, or robust current-loving companions — while large, boisterous or fin-nipping fish are best avoided. Given the species' Critically Endangered wild status, keepers who can establish and breed it make a genuine contribution to keeping a hardy aquarium population in circulation.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Teleogramma brichardi as Critically Endangered (CR), under criteria B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii), assessed on 16 February 2009 by T. Moelants; the population trend is listed as unknown. The listing reflects the species' tiny range — it is a narrow-range endemic confined to a short reach of the lower Congo rapids near Kinsuka, immediately downstream of the Kinshasa–Brazzaville conurbation — and a continuing decline in the quality of that habitat. A range that small leaves the fish acutely exposed to local pressures: pollution and sedimentation from a major urban area, and any alteration of the cataract's flow. The lower Congo rapids are also a target for hydropower development around the Inga site, and large-scale flow modification there is the kind of basin-level change that could threaten habitat specialists like Teleogramma, whose biology is bound to fast, oxygen-rich, free-flowing water. The species carries no CITES listing. It is collected in small numbers for the aquarium trade, and ongoing captive breeding by specialist hobbyists is a meaningful safeguard for a fish whose wild future is precarious.
