Taxonomy & naming
Teleogramma obamaorum was described in 2015 by the American Museum of Natural History ichthyologist Melanie L.J. Stiassny and her colleague S. Elizabeth Alter, in a paper in American Museum Novitates that combined a morphological description with the first molecular phylogeny of the genus. The species name honours U.S. President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama, cited by the authors for their commitment to science education, gender equality and self-reliance across African nations and to environmental conservation in Africa and beyond; following Recommendation 31.1.2 of the zoological code, the epithet is treated as a noun in the genitive plural (obama-orum, 'of the Obamas'). The genus Teleogramma was erected by George Boulenger in 1899 and is a small clade of rheophilic, rock-dwelling cichlids confined to the fast-flowing waters of the western Congo basin; it sits within the chromidotilapiine assemblage of the African subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae. Before this work the genus held four recognised species - Teleogramma brichardi, Teleogramma gracile, Teleogramma monogramma and Teleogramma depressa - most of them lower-Congo rapids endemics; Teleogramma obamaorum was the fifth. The holotype (AMNH 264012), a 3 in male, was taken on 10 August 2011 in the main channel of the middle Congo at a rocky outcrop en route to the Mayi Ndombe River, with paratype series deposited at the AMNH and the Royal Museum for Central Africa (MRAC). Stiassny and Alter's molecular analyses, drawing on two nuclear and two mitochondrial loci, recovered strong support for the validity of the new species while finding the deeper relationships within the genus poorly resolved owing to very short internal branches.
Morphology
Teleogramma obamaorum is a small cichlid, the largest examined specimen reaching about 3 in in standard length. It departs sharply from the typical Teleogramma build: where its congeners are elongate and dorsoventrally flattened - low-slung fish that hug the rock in fast current - Teleogramma obamaorum is uniquely robust and laterally compressed, with the greatest body depth at the first dorsal spine and a head that is bulky rather than depressed. The cheeks bulge from a markedly enlarged jaw-closing (adductor mandibulae) muscle, the snout is prominent, and both sexes often carry a small fat-filled nuchal hump just before the dorsal fin. Fin counts run to roughly 11-13 dorsal spines with 8-9 soft rays and 7-8 anal spines with 8-9 soft rays, over 30-32 vertebrae. Several features set it apart from its relatives: conspicuously inflated pores in the laterosensory canals of the head, jaws and infraorbital region; five separate infraorbital bones rather than the usual four; 32-35 pored lateral-line scales (versus 51-60 in Teleogramma brichardi); and 7-8 anal spines (versus four in Teleogramma monogramma). The lower pharyngeal jaw is notably heavy and robust, bearing enlarged, somewhat molariform symphysial teeth - the dental signature of a shell-crusher. In life the body is a uniform smoky grayish black, paler and yellowish toward the belly; preserved specimens are dark brownish black with uniformly blackish-brown unpaired fins. There is essentially no contrasting pattern.
Habitat
The entire known range of Teleogramma obamaorum is a stretch of about 40 kilometres of the middle Congo River main channel just upstream of Pool Malebo, near Kinshasa, in the Democratic Republic of Congo - quite possibly the whole of the species' distribution. This is turbulent, deep, fast-flowing water, an area of high cichlid endemism in the transition zone above the lower-Congo rapids. The species was found on rocky outcrops, but not the shoreline rocks accessible in normal years: every specimen was collected during the exceptional drought of July to September 2011, when water levels in the main channel fell to a historic low and a series of midstream outcrops that are otherwise completely submerged became briefly exposed and reachable. The authors concluded that Teleogramma obamaorum is restricted to deepwater rocky habitats that normally lie well below the surface - a genuinely deep-living rheophile rather than a shallow rapids fish. Most of the surrounding shoreline was sandy or reed-fringed, with very few rocky outcrops, which is part of why its range appears so narrow. Like other Congo rapids cichlids it inhabits warm, soft to moderately mineralised, well-oxygenated tropical river water; precise in-situ chemistry was not published, but waters of this reach are typically near-neutral and warm (broadly pH ~6.5-7.5 and ~24-28 degrees C for the region). No depth figure was measured directly - the fish were sampled only when their habitat was exposed - but the biology points to a normally submerged, comparatively deep niche.
Feeding
Teleogramma obamaorum is a specialised molluskivore - a snail-eater - and this is the trait the describers chose to headline in the paper's title. The stomach and the full length of the gut of every collected specimen were packed with small, intact shells of two species of minute rissooidean gastropods (superfamily Rissooidea); in most fish no other food was present, though a few also held disarticulated remains of mayfly (ephemeropteran) nymphs. The heavy, robust lower pharyngeal jaw with its enlarged, molariform symphysial teeth is the functional apparatus for this diet, crushing the shells before the contents are processed. This sets the species apart ecologically from its congeners, which are more generalised invertebrate-pickers of the rapids, and it is consistent with FishBase's estimated trophic level of about 3.3. The find is a good example of how the Congo's rocky rapids drive narrow ecological specialisation: even within a small genus of rheophilic cichlids, Teleogramma obamaorum has evolved into a dedicated bottom-feeding shell-crusher of the deep rock zone.
Mating
Almost nothing is known about the social life of Teleogramma obamaorum, because it has only ever been seen as preserved specimens taken during a single drought sampling. The most striking and best-documented reproductive fact about it is what it lacks: unlike every other member of the genus, males and females are coloured alike. In other Teleogramma the female develops a bright marking - a distinctive dorsal 'blaze' on the caudal fin and a pronounced red flush on the belly during breeding, as in most chromidotilapiine cichlids - and the sexes are easily told apart. In Teleogramma obamaorum the female keeps the same smoky grey body even when reproductively active, and the only reliable external way to sex the fish is to examine the genital papilla. Stiassny and Alter, and later commentators, suggested this loss of sexual dichromatism may be an adaptation to a dark, deep habitat where visual courtship signals are of little use. By analogy with better-studied congeners such as Teleogramma brichardi - rheophilic cave-spawners that form pair bonds and defend a crevice - Teleogramma obamaorum is presumed to be a pairing, territorial rock-cichlid, but its actual courtship, pair formation and territoriality have never been observed.
Breeding
Breeding in Teleogramma obamaorum has not been observed; what is known comes from the reproductive condition of the type series and from the habits of its relatives. The genus comprises cave or crevice spawners that deposit eggs on the roof or wall of a sheltered rock cavity and guard the brood as a pair - in the well-known Teleogramma brichardi, batches of roughly 10-30 eggs are laid on the ceiling of a cave and tended by the female while the male holds the territory. Teleogramma obamaorum appears to follow the same low-fecundity, large-egg strategy typical of these rapids cichlids. Several of the collected females were reproductively active, indicating that August (the low-water period) falls within a spawning season. Fecundity is strikingly low: the largest female examined (2.5 in SL) held only 19 ovoid eggs, each about 0.5 in tall and 0.5 in at its widest, and the smallest mature female (2 in SL) held 15 eggs of similar size - far fewer than the egg counts reported for some congeners. Such small clutches of large, yolky eggs point to cave-brooding with parental care rather than broadcast spawning, but the spawning site, the division of parental duties, incubation time and fry development all remain undocumented in this species.
In the aquarium
Teleogramma obamaorum has never been kept in an aquarium, and there is no husbandry experience to report. It is known from a single scientific collection made during the 2011 drought and, as the Cichlid Room Companion noted, has not been seen since; it does not appear in the ornamental trade and there is no captive stock anywhere. Anything written about keeping it would therefore be speculation drawn from its rheophilic relatives. The genus as a whole is demanding: Teleogramma such as Teleogramma brichardi are specialist rapids fish that need a powered, turbulent, intensely oxygenated current, hard rockwork with caves and crevices for spawning, and pristine, warm, well-buffered water. For obamaorum specifically the challenge would be greater still, because it is a deepwater fish of fast main-channel habitats and an obligate snail-eater - a diet of small, shelled gastropods that would be difficult to supply in captivity. Soft, warm river-type water in the region of pH 6.5-7.5 and 24-28 degrees C, with strong flow, would be the starting point inferred from the genus and locality, but none of this has been tested. In short, this is a wild-only fish of scientific rather than hobby interest, and it should be regarded as a species to read about rather than to keep.
Conservation
Teleogramma obamaorum has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List - it carries no global category (Not Evaluated as of the 2025 Red List version checked directly against the database), and it is likewise outside CITES and CMS. That absence of a formal listing should not be read as security. The species is known from a single ~25 mi reach of the middle Congo above Pool Malebo and may be a true micro-endemic, restricted to deepwater rocky outcrops that are normally inaccessible; it was collected only because a record drought exposed its habitat, and it has not been documented again since 2011. A range that small, in a heavily populated stretch of river near Kinshasa, leaves little margin. The describers themselves framed the discovery as a warning that the Congo's rapids harbour highly specialised, narrowly distributed cichlids that remain poorly known even as the river faces mounting pressure - the lower and middle Congo are targeted for large hydropower development (the Grand Inga complex among them), and dams, altered flow and water-quality change are the obvious threats to a current-dependent, rock-restricted, snail-eating endemic. Until the species is properly surveyed and assessed, its status is best described as unknown but potentially precarious.
