Alestes inferus is a small African tetra described in 2009 from the Mpozo River, a south-bank tributary of the lower Congo River in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Endemic to a single river system, it is distinguished from its congeners by an unusually low lateral-line scale count and was formally named in the peer-reviewed journal Copeia. The species has not been assessed by the IUCN, and almost nothing is documented about it in the aquarium hobby — it remains a scientific curiosity rather than an established aquarium fish.

Taxonomy & naming

Alestes inferus was formally described by Melanie L.J. Stiassny, Robert C. Schelly, and Venant Mamonekene in 2009, published in Copeia. The type locality is the Mpozo River, a south-bank tributary of the Congo River collected near the confluence of the two rivers in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Catalog of Fishes, CAS) remains the authority for the valid name Alestes inferus Stiassny, Schelly & Mamonekene, 2009.

The species belongs to the family Alestidae — the African tetras — a group of characiform fishes found across sub-Saharan Africa and the Nile basin. The genus Alestes is one of the larger and more morphologically diverse genera within the family, encompassing species ranging from small riverine tetras to larger, commercially harvested fishes. Alestes inferus is set apart from most of its congeners by a lower lateral-line scale count of 31–33, compared with 36–45 in the majority of related species, and by the meristic combination of vertebrae numbering 39–40.

Morphology

Alestes inferus reaches a maximum standard length of 3.5 in based on specimens recorded in FishBase; sex was not specified for this measurement. Like other members of Alestidae, it is a laterally compressed characiform with the family's characteristic adipose fin positioned between the dorsal and caudal fins.

Fin-ray counts from the original description and morphological data show a dorsal fin of 2 unbranched plus 8 branched rays, and an anal fin of 3 unbranched plus 16–18 branched rays — the long, many-rayed anal fin typical of Alestes. Lateral-line scale count of 31–33 and vertebrae count of 39–40 are among the key diagnostic characters distinguishing this species from congeners. Detailed colour pattern in life is not well documented in available sources.

Habitat

The species is known only from the Mpozo River, a tributary entering the Congo River from the south bank near their confluence in the lower Congo drainage, Democratic Republic of Congo. Coordinates associated with collection sites fall approximately between 5–6°S and 13–14°E. Specimens were collected from two habitat types within the river: shallow water among emergent grasses and deeper pools, both associated with rocky or rubble substrate.

The lower Congo River system is hydrologically and biogeographically complex, with steep gradients, high current velocities, and considerable endemism in its fish fauna. The Mpozo River, as a south-bank tributary in this zone, shares the general character of a Congo-system stream — year-round tropical temperatures with a wet–dry seasonal cycle — though specific water chemistry data for the Mpozo collection sites are not recorded in available sources.

Feeding

No specific dietary data for Alestes inferus have been published in accessible sources. By analogy with well-studied members of the genus and family, an omnivorous diet centred on insects, small invertebrates, and organic matter is expected. Alestidae generally feed at or near the surface and in the water column, taking terrestrial insects that fall onto the water alongside aquatic invertebrates and some plant material.

In any aquarium setting, the species would likely accept standard tetra fare — small live and frozen invertebrates, flake, and small pellets — though it has not entered the mainstream hobby and there is no documented captive-husbandry experience to draw on.

Mating

No mating behaviour has been described for Alestes inferus specifically. Alestidae as a family are egg-scattering open-water spawners with no parental care, a reproductive strategy shared across the order Characiformes. Adults broadcast adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs that settle among fine-leaved aquatic plants or substrate debris, and the eggs and larvae receive no further attention from the parents.

Seasonal spawning cued by rainfall and water-level fluctuation is common in African river tetras, and the Mpozo River system is subject to the Congo basin's wet and dry seasons, making seasonal reproduction likely for this species as well — though this has not been investigated.

Breeding

No captive breeding records for Alestes inferus are available. Based on family-level biology, breeding would follow the open egg-scattering mode typical of Alestidae: a group of adults releasing eggs freely into the water column or over vegetation, with no pair bond and no parental care, eggs hatching within a few days at tropical temperatures.

Should the species become available to specialist breeders, the approach used for related small African tetras — a separate spawning tank with fine-leaved plants or a mesh floor to separate eggs from adults, followed by removal of the adults and rearing the fry on infusoria and newly hatched brine shrimp — would provide a reasonable starting point.

In the aquarium

Alestes inferus is not established in the aquarium hobby. It was described from wild-collected specimens and has not been commercially imported or purposefully maintained. General Alestidae husbandry guidelines suggest that small alestid tetras prefer soft, slightly acidic to neutral water, adequate swimming space, and the company of conspecifics — characteristics shared by many African tetras that do appear in the trade.

If the species were to appear in specialist collections, care modelled on related small Alestes would be a sensible starting point: a spacious tank with a current, a school of at least six individuals, a varied diet of live and frozen invertebrates supplemented with dry food, and water chemistry reflecting the Congo tributaries — warm tropical temperatures with moderate hardness and a near-neutral pH. Given its restricted range and lack of any hobbyist presence, wild specimens would need to be sourced through research or specialist import channels.

Conservation

Alestes inferus has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List. Its known distribution is restricted to the Mpozo River, a single south-bank tributary of the lower Congo, which places it among the narrowly endemic members of an already species-rich and poorly surveyed river basin. A species known from one river and described only in 2009 is inherently at risk from localised habitat disturbance, even if no specific threats have been documented in published literature.

The lower Congo basin faces ongoing pressures from artisanal and industrial fishing, sand extraction, and agricultural encroachment along smaller tributaries. Until targeted surveys establish the full distributional range of A. inferus and the condition of its habitat, the conservation status of this species remains unknown. It is not in captive culture that could serve as a buffer against wild population decline.
