A large, pelagic schooling fish of the Congo River basin, Alestes liebrechtsii reaches 15.5 in total length and roams the mid-water in boisterous, leaping schools through the river systems of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Republic of Congo, Cameroon, and the Central African Republic. Described by George Albert Boulenger in 1898, it is closely related to the long-finned alestes Alestes macrophthalmus and shares the family Alestidae's hallmark of an active, omnivorous lifestyle in fast-moving Central African waters.

Taxonomy & naming

Alestes liebrechtsii was described by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1898, placing it within the genus Alestes, which belongs to the family Alestidae — the African tetras. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Catalog of Fishes, CAS) recognises the valid name as Alestes liebrechtsii Boulenger, 1898.

The species is notably similar to Alestes macrophthalmus, the long-finned alestes, and the two have historically been confused or conflated in literature and trade. Distinguishing them requires careful examination of meristic characters. The genus Alestes as currently understood groups medium to large, deep-bodied schooling alestids from Sub-Saharan Africa. The broader family Alestidae encompasses the African tetras, a radiation of primarily Sub-Saharan freshwater fishes that are the Old World counterpart to the Neotropical characids.

Morphology

Alestes liebrechtsii is a large alestid, recorded to a maximum total length of 15.5 in, though most individuals encountered in the wild and all aquarium specimens are considerably smaller. Like other members of the genus it is a laterally compressed, streamlined fish with a moderately deep body, large eyes, and the small adipose fin that characterises the broader family.

The species closely resembles Alestes macrophthalmus, the two sharing a similar silvery body with the oblique striping or spot patterning typical of Alestes. Data on precise meristic counts and colouration are sparse in the published aquarium literature, and the safest identification of the species rests on origin data from the Congo basin combined with expert examination. In schools in open water the fish flash silver and are frequently observed leaping clear of the surface, a behaviour documented for the species by FishBase.

Habitat

The species is endemic to the Congo River basin and has been recorded from the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Republic of Congo, Cameroon, and the Central African Republic — the vast drainage centred on one of the world's largest tropical river systems. Within that system it occupies pelagic, open-water zones of large rivers and associated waters, where it forms schools in the mid-water column.

As a tropical freshwater fish of the Congo system it inhabits warm equatorial rivers with the chemistry characteristics of that drainage: relatively soft and mildly acidic to neutral water, with temperatures in the mid- to upper-20s Celsius. The pelagic, schooling lifestyle places it in mainstream river channels and open expanses rather than marginal vegetation or rock-pile habitats.

Feeding

Alestes liebrechtsii is an omnivore with a broad, opportunistic diet documented to include small fish, fruits, aquatic and terrestrial insects, and plant material or vegetation. This dietary breadth is characteristic of the genus and reflects life in the open water of large equatorial rivers, where food availability shifts seasonally with river levels and fruiting cycles on the floodplain.

Fruit consumption links it to the same seasonal flood-pulse ecology that shapes many large Amazonian characids — during high-water periods when the river overtops its banks and inundates forest, seasonally available fruits become an important food source. The invertebrate component of the diet includes both aquatic insects and terrestrial prey taken at or near the surface, consistent with the species' documented leaping behaviour.

Mating

Captive breeding of Alestes liebrechtsii is not documented in the available aquarium literature, and the species is not established as a hobby breeding subject. Given its large adult size (to 15.5 in TL) and pelagic schooling lifestyle, it would require substantial space and excellent water quality to reach reproductive condition in captivity.

Based on the family pattern, spawning would involve scattering of adhesive eggs among fine-leaved vegetation or in open water, with no parental care and likely a large egg complement appropriate to a fish of this size. Any future breeding attempts would benefit from replicating the seasonal cues of the Congo system — a dry-season conditioning period followed by a simulated rise in temperature and water level to trigger spawning.

In the aquarium

Alestes liebrechtsii is rarely seen in the ornamental fish trade, and it is not an established aquarium subject at the hobbyist level. Its large adult size — up to 15.5 in total length — places it firmly in the category of a specialist or public-aquarium fish rather than a community-tank species, as very few home aquaria have the water volume and run length to house a school of large pelagic alestids appropriately.

Any attempt to keep the species would require a very large aquarium with excellent filtration, strong water movement to replicate Congo mainstream conditions, and a group of conspecifics rather than solitary housing. Diet should include meaty foods — small whole fish, large insects or prawn — alongside plant-based offerings to reflect the wild omnivory. For aquarists drawn to large African characins, the more manageable and better-documented Congo tetra Phenacogrammus interruptus covers similar geographical and aesthetic ground at a fraction of the size.

Conservation

Alestes liebrechtsii is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with an assessment conducted in 2009. The Least Concern listing reflects the species' wide distribution across the large and relatively intact Congo River basin, one of the world's most extensive tropical freshwater systems, and the absence of evidence for population-level declines attributable to specific threats.

The Congo basin faces long-term pressures from deforestation, artisanal and commercial fishing, and proposed hydropower development, but the basin's vast extent provides a degree of buffering for wide-ranging pelagic species. Monitoring of large-bodied Alestes species across the basin is limited, and future assessments may refine the picture as data improve.
