Argopleura chocoensis is a small characid reaching about 2 in standard length, endemic to the rivers and creeks of Colombia's Chocó Department — one of the most biodiverse and least-explored freshwater regions on Earth. Described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1913 from the San Juan River at Istmina, the species ranges across the Atrato, San Juan, and Baudó river systems, occupying clear, fast to intermediate-flow highland streams at around 400 ft elevation. Despite threats from artisanal gold mining and deforestation across its range, the IUCN assessed it as Least Concern in 2016, noting that its wide distribution means current pressures are unlikely to trigger a population decline severe enough to warrant a threatened category.

Taxonomy & naming

Argopleura chocoensis was described by the American ichthyologist Carl H. Eigenmann in 1913, with the type locality recorded as Istmina on the San Juan River in what is now Colombia's Chocó Department. The species is placed in the genus Argopleura, a small characid genus whose name derives from the Greek argos (bright or shining) and pleura (side), an allusion to the reflective lateral surface seen in living specimens. The specific epithet chocoensis refers to the Chocó biogeographic region, the extraordinarily wet, forested Pacific lowland belt of Colombia where the species was first collected.

The genus Argopleura has historically been placed within the family Characidae, and that placement is followed here per Catalog of Fishes. Some recent phylogenetic work recognises a segregate Stevardiidae for certain South American characiforms formerly classified within Characidae, and FishBase currently lists the genus under Stevardiidae; the taxonomy of this lineage remains under revision. Regardless of suprageneric placement, the valid species name is unchanged. The original description authority appears in parentheses because Eigenmann placed the species in a different genus from the one in which it now resides.

The checklist of freshwater fishes of Colombia documents the species among the known ichthyofauna of the Pacific slope river systems, reflecting fieldwork by Maldonado-Ocampo and colleagues (2006) that confirmed its presence across the Chocó drainages.

Morphology

Argopleura chocoensis is a slender, laterally compressed characid reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 2 in (approximately 2.1 in). This measurement, drawn from FishBase, applies to male or unsexed individuals; the species is typical of small, cryptic Neotropical characids whose full size range is rarely documented outside the original collecting series.

Like other members of its genus, A. chocoensis carries the reflective lateral flank implied by the generic name. Detailed meristic and colour descriptions are not available in published sources accessible to this account, and characterising the species beyond its size and general form would risk fabrication. What can be stated with confidence is that it is a small, benthopelagic characid — occupying the lower to middle water column — consistent with the life history inferred from its stream habitat.

Habitat

Argopleura chocoensis inhabits rivers and creeks of intermediate flow with clear water in the Chocó Department of Colombia, recorded from an elevation of approximately 400 ft. Its documented range spans three river systems: the Atrato, the San Juan, and the Baudó, all draining westward to the Pacific through some of the most rainfall-intense terrain in the Americas. The Chocó receives among the highest annual precipitation on Earth, producing fast, oxygen-rich streams over rocky and sandy substrates beneath dense rainforest canopy.

The IUCN assessment describes clear waters with intermediate current, consistent with a benthopelagic species that likely shelters near the substrate or among submerged wood and leaf litter in smaller tributaries. No detailed microhabitat data appear in available literature; the species shares its range with a diverse Pacific-slope ichthyofauna and has not been the subject of focused ecological study.

Feeding

The IUCN Red List assessment categorises Argopleura chocoensis as an omnivore that feeds mainly on insects — the most direct feeding record available for the species. FishBase assigns it a trophic level of 3.0, which is consistent with a generalist insectivore taking terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates along with occasional plant material.

In the broader context of Neotropical small characids from forest streams, dietary opportunism is the rule: small insects fallen onto the water surface, larval aquatic invertebrates, zooplankton, and organic detritus are all exploited as seasonal abundance dictates. No stomach-content studies specific to A. chocoensis appear in the literature reviewed for this account.

Mating

No published behavioural observations of mating in Argopleura chocoensis are available. By analogy with small Neotropical characids broadly, and with the stevardiid lineage to which some authorities now assign the genus, reproductive behaviour is expected to involve males courting females with lateral displays and leading them to spawning sites among fine-leaved vegetation or over substrate.

The family-level pattern for egg-scattering characids involves repeated spawning bouts rather than a single mass spawning event, with females distributing adhesive eggs among aquatic plants or leaf litter. Breeding

In principle, the habitat parameters recorded in the wild — clear, well-oxygenated, intermediate-flow streams at around 400 ft elevation in a warm tropical zone — suggest that, like many small Chocó stream characids, it would require clean, soft to moderately hard, near-neutral water with good circulation and a temperature in the mid-20s Celsius. It should be regarded as a specialist stream fish rather than a standard community species, and any future captive specimens would be best housed in conditions replicating the fast, clear Chocó tributaries of its native range.

Conservation

Argopleura chocoensis is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, published in 2016 based on an assessment conducted in October 2014 by Villa-Navarro and Sanchez-Duarte. The justification notes that despite the species' restricted endemism to Colombia's Chocó, its range across three river systems (Atrato, San Juan, Baudó) is sufficient that current threats are not considered likely to cause a population decline reaching threatened thresholds.

Nonetheless, the assessment documents real pressures: artisanal gold mining at and near the type locality on the San Juan River, and deforestation across the Atrato and Baudó catchments. The Chocó is globally recognised as a biodiversity hotspot under severe agricultural and extractive pressure, and A. chocoensis is noted as not abundant, with population trend unknown. No protected areas cover its range. The absence of abundance data and the ongoing pace of habitat conversion in the Chocó make this a species worth monitoring in future reassessments, even if its current broad-basin range affords a buffer against immediate extinction risk.
