The species inhabits the mid-elevation stretches of the Magdalena and its tributaries, sheltering among submerged vegetation in the calmer margins of large river channels and inundated areas, and was first brought to science from Girardot by Carl Eigenmann in 1913.

Taxonomy & naming

Argopleura magdalenensis was described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1913, in his work "Some results from an ichthyological reconnaissance of Colombia, South America. Part II," published in Indiana University Studies (vol. 18, pp. 1–32). The type locality is Girardot, a town on the Magdalena River in the department of Cundinamarca, Colombia. Eigenmann placed the species in a new genus, Argopleura, which remains valid today. Because the genus name had already been established in the original description, the authority is written with parentheses — (Eigenmann, 1913) — indicating a subsequent combination, though in this case the species has remained within the genus Argopleura throughout its taxonomic history. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (California Academy of Sciences) is the governing authority for the valid name.

Argopleura belongs to the family Characidae in the broad sense. FishBase has historically placed it within Stevardiidae, a derived group of characids from the Andes and adjacent lowlands of South America, characterised by the remarkable presence of internal fertilisation. Whether Stevardiidae is treated as a distinct family or subsumed within Characidae varies by authority; for purposes of the atlas the family is recorded as Characidae. Argopleura is a small genus of inseminating characids and A. magdalenensis is its type species.

Morphology

Argopleura magdalenensis is a small, elongate characid reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 2.5 in. The body is slender and fusiform — well suited to open-water swimming in the mid-column — with the laterally compressed, somewhat torpedo-shaped profile typical of small pelagic characids. The species lacks the deep body of the classic "tetra" form, aligning more with the rheophilic or active-swimming members of its lineage.

Detailed colour and meristic data for this species in the published literature are sparse, and the fish is not widely documented in aquarium literature. In life, Argopleura species are generally silvery with a lateral stripe or iridescent sheen. Habitat

It does not appear in mainstream aquarium literature or trade lists, and its small size (to 2.5 in SL) and Andean river origins suggest it would suit a species tank or a biotope setup representing the mid-elevation Magdalena River with fine-leaved plants, moderate flow in parts of the tank, and neutral to slightly acid, soft to moderately hard water.

Its diet of insect larvae and its open-water pelagic lifestyle suggest it would benefit from live and frozen small invertebrates and should be kept in a group to reduce stress. Given the documented insemination biology of the group, a mixed-sex group of several individuals would be needed to encourage natural behaviour. Identified threats include urban wastewater pollution, deforestation, and erosion within the Magdalena basin, though the impact of these pressures on the species has not been quantified.
