Taxonomy & naming
Brittanichthys axelrodi was described by the prolific French ichthyologist Jacques Géry in 1965. The species is the best-known member of the small genus Brittanichthys, which sits within the family Characidae — one of the most species-rich vertebrate families on Earth, centred on the freshwaters of South America and Africa. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Catalog of Fishes, CAS) recognises the valid name as Brittanichthys axelrodi Géry, 1965.
The genus name Brittanichthys honours Marty Brittan (1922–2008), an American ichthyologist who worked extensively on characiform taxonomy; ichthys is the Greek for fish. The specific epithet axelrodi honours Herbert Axelrod (1927–2017), the tropical fish entrepreneur, author, and publisher whose expeditions contributed enormously to the discovery and popularisation of ornamental fishes from South America. Together the name commemorates two figures who shaped mid-twentieth-century tropical fish science and the hobby that grew alongside it.
Morphology
The blood red tetra is a tiny fish: maximum standard length is recorded at 1 in, with most aquarium specimens reaching approximately 1 in total length. The body is laterally compressed and moderately elongate, typical of small characids that school in open, slow water.
The colour pattern gives the species its common name: the body is predominantly a vivid red, with the belly and lower flanks transitioning to a pale beige or cream. This bicolour scheme, while modest in description, can be striking in a school of a dozen or more fish against dark substrate and tannin-stained water. Females tend to be stockier with a noticeably more rounded abdomen, particularly when ripe; males are slimmer. Beyond size and belly profile, sexual dimorphism is subtle in this species.
Habitat
Brittanichthys axelrodi is native to the Rio Negro basin of South America — one of the great blackwater river systems of the Amazon drainage. The Rio Negro and its tributaries carry water stained deep amber by dissolved humic and tannic acids leached from the surrounding forests and peat. The result is exceptionally soft, extremely acidic water: pH values of 4–6 are typical, hardness is negligible (GH 1–5), and conductivity is among the lowest recorded for any river system.
The species occurs in streams and flooded habitats within this blackwater zone, in warm, oxygen-adequate but chemically extreme conditions. Temperatures in the Negro basin typically range from roughly 72–79 °F. The combination of acid pH, near-zero mineral content, and warm temperature defines the ecological envelope within which B. axelrodi thrives — and outside of which it struggles.
Feeding
Brittanichthys axelrodi is carnivorous, feeding on small invertebrates in the wild. In a blackwater environment, the diet likely includes microcrustaceans, small insect larvae, and other zooplankton that are available in what is otherwise a nutrient-sparse system. FishBase records a trophic level of 3.1, consistent with a small invertebrate predator.
In the aquarium the species is straightforward to feed: it accepts high-quality micro-pellets and fine flake, and benefits greatly from regular offerings of live or frozen small foods such as Daphnia, micro worms, baby brine shrimp, and Cyclops. Varied feeding brings out the red colouration most strongly; a diet relying solely on dry foods may dull the colour over time.
Mating
Like the great majority of small characids, B. axelrodi is an egg-scattering species with no parental investment. Spawning occurs in open water or among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation, where eggs are deposited and immediately abandoned. The species is gregarious and diurnal, schooling actively during daylight hours; mating behaviour presumably takes place within or near the school rather than via exclusive pair-bonding.
Sexual readiness in females is signalled by the noticeably rounded abdomen that fills with eggs, which breeders use as the primary visual cue when selecting spawning candidates. Males in good condition and in the presence of females may display with intensified colour, though detailed published descriptions of courtship behaviour in this species are sparse.
Breeding
Brittanichthys axelrodi is an egg-scatterer that will spawn in soft, acidic water resembling its natural blackwater habitat. Soft, heated water at pH 4.5–6 and very low hardness is the foundation; spawning is most reliably achieved with reverse-osmosis or rain water, adjusted with peat extract or commercial blackwater conditioner to lower pH and add humic substances.
Fine-leaved plants such as Java moss or synthetic spawning mops placed near the surface provide the eggs an adhesive surface, though some eggs simply settle. Adults offer no parental care and will consume eggs, so removing the spawners or the medium after spawning is completed is necessary. Eggs and fry are sensitive to poor water quality and abrupt parameter shifts; the keeper must maintain excellent conditions and keep nitrate below around 25 mg/L. First foods for fry are correspondingly small — infusoria and commercial liquid fry food before graduating to micro worms and newly hatched brine shrimp.
In the aquarium
The blood red tetra is considered a specialist's fish rather than a beginner's tetra, solely because of its strict water-chemistry requirements. Given appropriately soft and acidic conditions — pH 4–6, GH 1–5, temperature 72–79 °F — it is otherwise peaceful, active, and long-lived, with high resilience (population doubling under 15 months) according to FishBase. The minimum recommended aquarium size is around 15 US gal, and a school of at least 10 individuals is advised; the species is gregarious and genuinely needs conspecifics to settle and school naturally.
The tank should be set up to replicate blackwater conditions: dark substrate, floating plants or surface cover to diffuse light, driftwood and leaf litter to lower pH and add tannins, and minimal to no calcium-bearing rocks. Filtration must be efficient but gentle — strong currents are incompatible with the slow, tannic waters the species inhabits. The species is reported sensitive to abrupt parameter changes and to chemical contaminants, so consistent, well-aged or prepared water is essential for every water change. Suitable tankmates are similarly small, peaceful, and equally adapted to blackwater conditions: other small pencilfish, apistogrammas kept under the same chemistry constraints, or small Corydoras species.
Conservation
Brittanichthys axelrodi is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, assessed on 7 November 2018. The Rio Negro basin — its home — is one of the more intact large river systems in Amazonia, and the species is not believed to face acute range-wide threats at the time of assessment. FishBase records the species as having high resilience, with population doubling times under 15 months.
Nonetheless, the broader Rio Negro blackwater ecosystem is not without pressure: illegal gold mining, forest clearing in the catchment, and the general encroachment of development on Amazonian watersheds are long-term concerns that affect water quality and hydrological stability. The species' strict dependence on intact blackwater chemistry makes it a potential early-warning indicator of catchment degradation. Aquarists can support conservation broadly by sourcing tank-bred stock where available and by supporting organisations working to protect Amazonian river habitats.
