Taxonomy & naming
Brittanichthys myersi was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Géry in 1965, with the original description appearing in Tropical Fish Hobbyist (vol. 13, no. 6). The holotype, a male of 1 in standard length (USNM 198131), was collected on 7 April 1964 from the south shore of the Rio Negro approximately 6 mi west of Manaus, Brazil. Géry's 1977 monograph Characoids of the World (T.F.H. Publications) remained for many years the principal reference for the species.
The genus Brittanichthys is a small, morphologically distinctive characid genus within the family Characidae. It currently contains two recognised species: B. myersi and B. axelrodi (Géry, 1965). The two are distinguished by differences in body pigmentation and morphology; the 2021 IUCN assessment notes that B. myersi can be told from B. axelrodi by these features. The specific epithet myersi honours the American ichthyologist George S. Myers, a prolific figure in tropical fish systematics. The valid name as recognised by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is Brittanichthys myersi Géry, 1965.
Morphology
Brittanichthys myersi is a very small fish, with FishBase recording a maximum standard length of 1.5 in. The holotype male measured 1 in SL. The body plan is the compressed, streamlined form typical of small characids, suited to life in slow, dark water among submerged vegetation and marginal cover.

The shallow marginal areas of large rivers are noted as the primary habitat in the IUCN assessment. Population trend is assessed as stable.
Feeding

Its rarity in trade means that most aquarists will have limited opportunity to keep it; those who do would be working at the frontier of hobby knowledge for the species.
Conservation
Brittanichthys myersi is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment published in 2023 based on a 2021 evaluation by assessor F. Lima (reviewed by T.J. Lyons). The population trend is recorded as stable. The species is found across the Rio Negro basin in Brazil and also in the Essequibo and Demerara river systems of Guyana, a distribution broad enough that no immediate range-based threat threshold is triggered.
The IUCN assessment notes that no direct threats have been identified, but flags the potential for pollution from gold mining operations in Guyana as a concern for that portion of the range. The species' preferred habitat of shallow marginal areas in large blackwater rivers is widespread across its known range. Continued monitoring of water quality in the Guyana portion of the range, where artisanal gold mining impacts are documented for multiple aquatic taxa, is prudent.
