Brittanichthys myersi is a diminutive characid of the Rio Negro basin in Brazil, reaching barely 1.5 in standard length and known in the wild from the dark, acidic blackwaters that drain the upper Amazon basin. Described by Jacques Géry in 1965, it shares its genus with a single congener — B. axelrodi — and the two species are separated primarily by morphological and pigmentary details. Its IUCN status is Least Concern, with a stable population found across portions of the Rio Negro and, according to the 2021 assessment, the Essequibo and Demerara river systems of Guyana.

Taxonomy & naming

Brittanichthys myersi was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Géry in 1965, with the original description appearing in Tropical Fish Hobbyist (vol. 13, no. 6). The holotype, a male of 1 in standard length (USNM 198131), was collected on 7 April 1964 from the south shore of the Rio Negro approximately 6 mi west of Manaus, Brazil. Géry's 1977 monograph Characoids of the World (T.F.H. Publications) remained for many years the principal reference for the species.

The genus Brittanichthys is a small, morphologically distinctive characid genus within the family Characidae. It currently contains two recognised species: B. myersi and B. axelrodi (Géry, 1965). The two are distinguished by differences in body pigmentation and morphology; the 2021 IUCN assessment notes that B. myersi can be told from B. axelrodi by these features. The specific epithet myersi honours the American ichthyologist George S. Myers, a prolific figure in tropical fish systematics. The valid name as recognised by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is Brittanichthys myersi Géry, 1965.

Morphology

Brittanichthys myersi is a very small fish, with FishBase recording a maximum standard length of 1.5 in. The holotype male measured 1 in SL. The body plan is the compressed, streamlined form typical of small characids, suited to life in slow, dark water among submerged vegetation and marginal cover.

FishBase records a trophic level of 3.1 and classifies the species as benthopelagic — occupying intermediate positions in the water column rather than being strictly bottom-dwelling or surface-oriented. No detailed colouration notes appear in the available cache sources beyond those needed to distinguish it from B. axelrodi; data on specific pigment patterns beyond what is captured in Géry's original description are sparse in accessible literature.

Habitat

Brittanichthys myersi inhabits blackwater rivers and their marginal areas. The type locality is an unnamed inlet on the south shore of the Rio Negro approximately 8 mi west of its confluence with the Amazon, near 3°10'S, 59°55'W, in Amazonas state, Brazil. FishBase records the species from the Rio Negro basin more broadly.

The IUCN 2021 assessment extends the known range to include the Essequibo and Demerara river drainages in Guyana, indicating the species has a wider distribution than the type locality alone suggests. The habitat is characterised by the strongly acidic, soft, tea-coloured water typical of Rio Negro blackwaters — FishBase records pH 4.5–6.0 and general hardness 0–8 dH, with temperatures in the range 72–75 °F. The shallow marginal areas of large rivers are noted as the primary habitat in the IUCN assessment. Population trend is assessed as stable.

Feeding

FishBase records a trophic level of 3.1 for Brittanichthys myersi, consistent with a diet based on small invertebrates and zooplankton — a typical pattern for small characids in Amazonian blackwaters. No detailed published dietary studies specific to this species appear in the available sources.

In the aquarium, species of this size and ecological guild are generally assumed to accept fine live and frozen foods such as Daphnia, Cyclops, brine shrimp nauplii, and micro-worms, as well as high-quality micro-pellets or powdered flake. Given the species' small size, appropriately fine food particle sizes are important to ensure adequate nutrition.

Mating

No detailed field or aquarium observations of mating behaviour in Brittanichthys myersi appear in the available sources. As a member of the family Characidae, it is expected to follow the general characid pattern of egg-scattering open spawning without parental care.

Males and females would typically display courtship behaviour in open water or among fine-leaved vegetation, with the pair depositing adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs that settle among plants or substrate. The very small adult size suggests spawning would involve correspondingly small eggs and, if the species follows the pattern of other diminutive blackwater tetras, possibly small clutch sizes per spawning event. Data beyond this inferred outline are sparse.

Breeding

Brittanichthys myersi is not a common aquarium fish and is rarely encountered in the trade. FishBase notes live export interest, but it is not an established hobby species in the way that better-known Rio Negro tetras are. The care requirements that can be inferred from its biology call for very soft, acidic water — pH in the 5.0–6.5 range, extremely low hardness — and warm temperatures around 72–75 °F, reflecting the blackwater conditions of the Rio Negro.

At a maximum size of around 1 in, it is a micro-fish by any standard and would be best kept in a quiet, species-only or carefully curated blackwater biotope with similarly sized, non-competitive tankmates. Fine-leaved plants, leaf litter, and tannin-stained water would replicate its native environment and likely reduce stress. Its rarity in trade means that most aquarists will have limited opportunity to keep it; those who do would be working at the frontier of hobby knowledge for the species.

Conservation

Brittanichthys myersi is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment published in 2023 based on a 2021 evaluation by assessor F. Lima (reviewed by T.J. Lyons). The population trend is recorded as stable. The species is found across the Rio Negro basin in Brazil and also in the Essequibo and Demerara river systems of Guyana, a distribution broad enough that no immediate range-based threat threshold is triggered.

The IUCN assessment notes that no direct threats have been identified, but flags the potential for pollution from gold mining operations in Guyana as a concern for that portion of the range. The species' preferred habitat of shallow marginal areas in large blackwater rivers is widespread across its known range. Continued monitoring of water quality in the Guyana portion of the range, where artisanal gold mining impacts are documented for multiple aquatic taxa, is prudent.
