Bryconacidnus hemigrammus is a small, slender characid reaching roughly 1.5 in standard length, known only from the Popoi River in the upper Beni River drainage of Bolivia at elevations between 430 and 631 metres. Described originally as Bryconamericus hemigrammus by Pearson in 1924, it was transferred to the monotypic genus Bryconacidnus following systematic work on the Diapominae — a subfamily nested within Characidae. The IUCN assessed it as Data Deficient in 2014, noting that its actual distribution, population size, and threats remain essentially unknown; it is among the least-studied small characins in the upper Amazon headwaters.

Taxonomy & naming

Bryconacidnus hemigrammus was originally described by Nathaniel Pearson in 1924 under the name Bryconamericus hemigrammus, based on material collected from what is now understood to be the Popoi River in the upper Beni River basin of Bolivia. The name Bryconacidnus hemigrammus (Pearson, 1924) was validated through placement in the genus Bryconacidnus, as recognised by Pavanelli in Reis et al. (2003) and subsequently by Sarmiento et al. (2014), and is recorded as the valid combination in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS). The parenthetical authority indicates that the original genus has changed since the description.

Bryconacidnus is placed within Diapominae, a subfamily of Characidae. This subfamily contains a small number of genera of compact, benthopelagic South American characins from the upper Amazon and its major headwater drainages. The species has no broadly recognised common name in the English-language hobby literature; "Pearson's Characin" is occasionally used in reference to the authority of the original description.

Morphology

Bryconacidnus hemigrammus is a small fish, with FishBase recording a maximum standard length of 1.5 in. It has the general body plan of a diapominine characid: moderately slender and laterally compressed, with a relatively small head, a terminal mouth, and the adipose fin that characterises most Characidae. The species name hemigrammus — from the Greek hemi (half) and grammos (line or mark) — likely refers to a lateral stripe or mid-body marking, a characteristic shared with many small tetra-grade characins.

Detailed meristic and morphometric data are sparse in the accessible literature. Beyond size, no colour descriptions from live or freshly preserved specimens appear in available secondary sources, and the species remains known from the original type series material. Data on pigmentation patterns in life are currently absent from the published record.

Habitat

The species is known from the Popoi River, a tributary within the upper Beni River drainage of Bolivia, at elevations between approximately 430 and 631 metres above sea level. This positions it in the Andean piedmont transition zone, where clear, cool to moderately warm Andean streams descend into the broader lowland Amazon system. The Beni-Madre de Dios drainage is a major headwater system of the western Amazon basin, draining the eastern slopes of the Andes in Bolivia and Peru.

FishBase characterises the species as benthopelagic and freshwater, indicating association with the lower water column in lotic (flowing-water) environments. No detailed habitat surveys — substrate composition, vegetation, flow regime, or water chemistry parameters specific to the type locality — are available in the accessible literature. The upper Beni piedmont streams are typically cool, well-oxygenated, and moderately fast-flowing.

Feeding

No published diet data specific to Bryconacidnus hemigrammus are available. Based on its placement in Diapominae and its body form, the species likely feeds opportunistically on small invertebrates, algae, and detrital matter in the benthopelagic zone, in the manner typical of small Neotropical characids in fast-flowing piedmont streams.

In any aquarium context, small diapominine characins of this general form would be expected to accept fine-grained live and frozen foods such as Artemia nauplii, Daphnia, and micro-worms, as well as suitably sized prepared foods. However, the species is not established in the hobby, and specific feeding observations under captive conditions are not on record.

Mating

No mating behaviour has been documented for Bryconacidnus hemigrammus. Spawning biology in this species is entirely unknown from the published record. Among Neotropical small characids broadly, egg-scattering open spawning with adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs deposited among substrate or fine-leaved vegetation is common, with no parental care following spawning.

The IUCN assessment notes that data on population trends and ecological requirements are lacking, which effectively precludes any reproductive phenology data. Seasonal cues in upper Amazon piedmont drainages — water level fluctuation associated with Andean rainfall patterns — are known to trigger spawning in other species of the system, and a similar seasonal association would be plausible for B. hemigrammus, but this remains speculative.

Breeding

Bryconacidnus hemigrammus has not been bred in captivity and is not held in any known aquarium collection. Breeding biology — clutch size, incubation period, fry requirements — is entirely unrecorded.

By analogy with other small diapominine and allied characids, egg-scattering over substrate or fine-leaved plants with no parental care would be the expected reproductive mode, and incubation at ambient piedmont stream temperatures would likely be measured in days. Beyond these general inferences, data are absent.

In the aquarium

Bryconacidnus hemigrammus is not present in the ornamental fish trade and has not been kept in aquaria. No husbandry notes exist in hobby sources. Its small size (1.5 in SL) and Andean piedmont origin suggest it would require cool to moderate temperatures, clean well-oxygenated water, and a diet of small invertebrate-based foods if ever maintained in captivity — but these are inferences from ecology, not observations from kept fish.

Aquarists seeking small Bolivian or upper Amazon characins currently have access to other species from related drainages. B. hemigrammus itself remains a fish of the scientific literature only.

Conservation

Bryconacidnus hemigrammus is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, an assessment published in 2014 (ver. 3.1). The assessors — Carvajal, Maldonado, Sarmiento, and Van Damme — noted that while the type locality (Popoi River, upper Beni drainage, Bolivia) is known, the species' full distribution, population size, and the threats it faces are unknown. The species is not recorded as present within any protected area.

Data Deficient does not mean the species is not at risk; it means the data needed to evaluate risk are absent. The upper Andean piedmont streams of Bolivia face ongoing pressures from agricultural encroachment, altered hydrology, and deforestation on the Andean slopes, all of which affect stream connectivity and water quality. With a type locality in a single tributary system and no documented population surveys, B. hemigrammus could be locally restricted and vulnerable to these pressures without any current means of assessing the magnitude of threat. Research into its distribution, population structure, and habitat requirements is explicitly flagged by the IUCN as a conservation priority.
