Taxonomy & naming
Bryconacidnus paipayensis was described by Pearson in 1929; the parenthetical authority reflects that the species was originally placed in a different genus before being assigned to Bryconacidnus. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) treats Bryconacidnus paipayensis (Pearson, 1929) as a valid species and references Ortega & Vari 1986 and Pavanelli in Reis et al. 2003 among the works recognising the current placement.
The genus Bryconacidnus belongs to the family Characidae, the largest family of freshwater fishes in the Neotropics, order Characiformes. Some earlier literature assigned the genus to Stevardiidae, but Characidae is the current treatment followed here. References also include Barriga Salazar 2014. The type locality is the Pusoc and Crisnejas rivers in the Peruvian Andes.
Morphology
Bryconacidnus paipayensis is a small fish, reaching a maximum of 2 in standard length according to FishBase. It is a member of the speciose Characidae and carries the typical characid body plan: a fusiform, laterally compressed body, a small adipose fin behind the dorsal, and a forked tail. Data on detailed meristics and coloration for this species are sparse in the accessible literature.
With a trophic level of 2.8 (FishBase), the species sits in the lower range of the trophic scale, consistent with feeding on plant material and small invertebrates rather than fish. Sexual dimorphism has not been characterised in the published record.
Habitat
Bryconacidnus paipayensis occurs in the Ucayali River basin of the Peruvian Amazon, with the type locality in the Pusoc and Crisnejas rivers of the Andean foothills. The IUCN assessment notes that the species is found near river margins in freshwater streams and rivers, and FishBase classifies it as a freshwater pelagic species of tropical Andean drainages.
The upper Amazon foothills setting implies clear, well-oxygenated rivers with moderate current, rocky or sandy substrate, and riparian vegetation. The IUCN recorded the species in the Yasuní National Park inventory of Amazonian fish diversity, extending its known range into Ecuador or confirming broader upper-Amazon occurrence. Population trend is stable and no major threats to habitat have been documented.
Feeding
The IUCN assessment notes that Bryconacidnus paipayensis feeds on arthropods and seeds. This places it among the many small characids that exploit both terrestrial invertebrates falling onto the water surface and the seeds and fruits that are seasonally abundant in Amazonian floodplain systems — a feeding strategy common across the Characiformes.
With a trophic level of 2.8, the species is primarily a low-order consumer. In an aquarium setting it would be expected to accept fine prepared foods and small live or frozen invertebrates such as Daphnia and brine shrimp, in line with its natural arthropod diet, but specific aquarium feeding data are absent from the literature.
Mating
No specific mating behaviour has been documented in the literature for Bryconacidnus paipayensis. Bryconacidnus paipayensis is not a species currently known in the ornamental fish hobby. Its small adult size of around 2 in SL and its upper-Amazon origins suggest it could be maintained in a well-planted aquarium with soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water reflecting Andean foothill river conditions. As a schooling characid it would presumably do best in a group.
Practical husbandry data — temperature tolerances, social behaviour, dietary requirements in captivity, tankmate compatibility — are absent from the literature. Aquarists with access to this species would be working in nearly undocumented territory.

Bryconacidnus paipayensis is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, assessed 22 April 2014 and published in 2016 by Ortega Torres and reviewed by Tognelli. The assessment notes a restricted but stable distribution in the Ucayali River basin with no known major threats, no conservation measures specifically in place, and the species not recorded from protected areas at the time of assessment.
While the restricted range in Andean Peruvian drainages means that severe habitat degradation could be a future concern, the population trend was considered stable and no specific threats were identified. The species has a low fishing vulnerability index (FishBase) and is not exploited commercially.
